Love this place, been going here for years, since it was at its old location and now here... always get good food at a good price. The service is excellent. Visited the restaurant for a work team lunch on Wednesday. Wasn't very busy inside so it was easy to seat all of us. We all got their any 3 rolls lunch special and all the food came at once. Understated, unassuming, and undeniably delicious! I had lunch by myself and got to sit at the bar. As usual, my food arrived quickly, despite being busy. I had the sushi sashimi combo with a salad. The salad was yummy, a typical side salad that one could expect from a Japanese sushi restaurant. I'll start my review by saying sushi isn't normally my first choice, but my husband loves it! So when he said he was in the mood for sushi and wanted to try Takumi, I was open but maybe not the most excited. I always feel a little self-conscious because I don't love uncooked fish (insert embarrassed face here). Despite all that, though, we had a great night at Takumi and I really enjoyed my dinner - They have many options for folks lke me :) We got a bottle of hot sake which was so great for a cold winter night. To start, we ordered gyoza which were perfectly tasty! The Takumi menu has several rolls that are cooked so that people like me can have many options at a sushi restaurant! My husband got the iPhone roll and another one that was listed on the specials board, which he really enjoyed. The restaurant is cozy and gets busy around dinner time so we were glad we had come at an early-bird time (before 6). I'd come back for sure! read more

A great sushi place that offers hibachi! Someone recommended that I try Takumi if I love sushi and I'm sure glad I did. My partner and I came here on a Tuesday night for dinner. The place was pretty packed. I opted for a special roll, the Foxy Lady roll, and a simple salmon avocado roll. Both were delicious! Ample amounts of filling in both which I really appreciate! I thought the rice was a tad bit mushy/too much on the roll, but that's probably my personal taste. Regardless, I still cleaned the plate. My partner got the chicken Katsu and said it was probably the best he's tried in Madison. We also got a side order of hibachi rice that was delicious as well. It's been a while since I had hibachi anything so seeing it on the menu was a nice surprise for me. It seems like you can reserve both regular tables and hibachi tables. Good to keep in mind for larger parties. The staff were super attentive and friendly the entire night. Covid protocol was followed and there was plenty of parking. Hands down, Takumi is my favorite sushi place in all of Madison - and we have plenty to choose from. These sushi chefs create some of the most beautiful, fresh, delicious rolls i've ever had - it is truly art. I've never had a roll here that didn't blow me away. I took my husband to Takumi for Father's Day and the food/show did not disappoint. My husband was craving habachi since we frequented Benihana's in LA. This restaurant does not have the size or atmosphere of Benihana but it is a quaint little restaurant with two hibachi tables near the back. The show wasn't quite as fanciful, but the waiter did a good job. My daughter was terrified of the fire, so we may wait a little while before coming back with her. read more

Came here for a sushi lunch on a Saturday and the service was much nicer than my first experience. The sushi is okay. It's not grocery store sushi but it's also not the best. The seaweed was very chewy and kind of left a weird mouth feel afterwards. Also, most of the rolls with something other than fish is mostly the other ingredient. Taking a bite of the Alaska roll was basically all avocado. My 4 star upgrade is because of the reasonable price. 2 rolls for $12.95 and 3 rolls for $13.95 during lunch hours (until 11 am - 2pm)??? So affordable and definitely worth it since they give you a large serving of salad or miso soup as an appetizer. Also, the table service is pretty nice and our waiter was attentive. read more

I found Takumi in my search for local poke bowls, and found an amazing spot here in East Madison! The woman working behind the counter was enormously friendly, welcoming and helpful with all of my questions about ingredients and sauces. She was very meticulous in preparing the four bowls ordered. I ordered a shrimp poke bowl and all of the ingredients (pineapple, corn, cucumber, carrot and crispy onions) were very fresh and beautifully arranged. The poke sauce is well balanced with the right amount of soy, sesame, garlic and ginger without overpowering the freshness of the rest of the bowl. The restaurant is very quaint, clean and inviting, as well. I would HIGHLY recommend visiting Takumi for poke bowls in ALL of Madison! read more

There's not a lot of sushi option when it comes to the East side of Madison for some reason, but am so thankful Takumi is an option and it is a great option. They are always on point with there sushi and are priced very reasonably. During lunch time, M-Sat you can have sushi at an even more affordable price either 2 or 3 rolls included soup or salad for only $9.50 or $12.25 respectively and bento boxes for under $10 Their hibachi is a ton of fun. Their staff make it really entertaining. And for your BD they come out banging a drum, rocking to Happy BD. They let everyone know you're celebrating. Doesn't look like much from the outside, but the inside experience is as authentic as it gets. Sashimi was fresh and expertly cut with subtle but complex flavors and textures. If it's in season I'd highly recommend the super white tuna, in addition the yellow tail, and salmon were our group favorites. The octopus was not chewy but tender and fresh. Miso soup was not overly salty, nor tasted like water. The shumai tasted pre-cooked with an onion flavor but who goes to a Japanese restaurant for shumai? All of the sushi rolls were balanced and much higher grade than anything you'd get at a refrigerator in a market place. What sets the food apart is they serve sushi freshly made so it's the correct temperature though you do have to wait a while for the sushi chef to make your selections if it's a busy day. Just don't come here if you are in a rush as it's not a fast food restaurant. The sukiyaki was not greasy and tasted sweet/savory just like how my grandmother makes it only they used a lean stir fry beef cuts while my grandma would choose a fattier thinly sliced beef. Not many Japanese restaurants serve sukiyaki like this in a ceramic pot so it's probably worth trying this dish alone as it was a staple in my Japanese household. The tempura was crispy and not oily, I believe they use Panko bread crumbs to make it light and crunchy. If you come in a big party you can reserve the private room surrounded in oak paneling and a sliding privacy door. You'll have to take your shoes off and sit flush with the floor on seat cushions for a Japanese experience. If you order Japanese soda, you'll be using a small plunger to push a glass marble into your bottle to open the ramune. Only thing I missed trying out was the Japanese beer and saki, but I give high ratings to this place for the Japanese food and service. read more

When traveling through Madison we always time our trip so we can stop for lunch at Takumi, just off I-94 on the East side of Madison in the East Towne Mall. Of course, it's lunchtime, but it's always busy. The decor is reminiscent of restaurants we've visited in Japan, and the staff is always welcoming. The lunch specials, whether you choose a bento, hibachi or various sushi/sashimi items, are fresh and reasonably priced. My favorite is the salmon skin sushi. Never disappointed. read more

It's been 2 years since my previous review and I don't know why I hadn't come back since that time! Again, came by for lunch and had a steak hibachi as well as a salmon teriyaki bento box. They both came with either a soup or a salad (tried both, both standard). I continue to be impressed with this place. The steak hibachi was perfectly cooked and the portion size was hearty with tender medallions of steak. The salmon bento box was also tasty. It came with a fried shrimp shumai as well as a california roll. Everything was tasty and filling, and service was efficient. I hope this update reminds me to come back more often when I have a chance. read more

This is probably the best sushi on the east side of Madison without having to navigate downtown traffic. Pros: their lunch menu! Talk about 3 rolls for $12.95 or their bento boxes around the same price, if not less. I'm a fan favorite of their miso soup! Fast service, kind to refill water on multiple occasions without intruding. For the lunch menu, I had the spicy shrimp tempura roll. I couldn't tell that it was spicy, so that was slightly disappointing. I like to think the veggie tempura roll is often overshadowed, but I definitely suggest this one, even for the carnivores. They used asparagus and sweet potato. My favorite was the eel and avocado roll-so much flavor to it! I shared the edamame and it could have used more salt. On this specific visit, I was disappointed in how the rolls looked. They were uneven and not packed tightly, making it difficult to eat. read more

Located on the East Side of Madison, right by East Towne Mall, it's typically more of a treat to come out to this Takumi Japanese Restaurant. Yesterday, since I was carving some Shrimp Tempura Udon (after watching videos on how to make some online) and giving that we were in the area to go shopping nearby, we decided to stop by this location. We ordered three different lunch specials, so I was able to have my shrimp tempura udon with miso soup and three rolls of sushi: eel avocado, shrimp tempura and spicy tuna. All of which was fairly delicious as we struggled to eat all the of the food. Service was decent, when my cup of water was low, it only took a few minutes before the server came by to fill it back up. Prices are reasonable, a little higher but for the quality of food, it was good. read more

We have ordered pick up twice while under social distancing. They are one of the BEST at having a good no contact procedure. You call when you arrive to pick up. They put your order with receipt on a table just outside the door. You sign receipt, put it in a box on the table, and take your order. I REALLY appreciate this! But the sushi is great too! Tried several new rolls- Red river roll, Futo roll: both very good and different from what I have had before. Futo reminded me of Korean kimbop: big roll stuffed with lots of great ingredients inside. Also got spicy tuna and spicy scallop rolls. Both great as always. Sushi is always better fresh at a restaurant table, but this comes close! Definitely will continue to order from Takumi!!! read more

Come to Madison east towne and discover the weight loss sensation that will soon be sweeping across the US like the Beatles. Forget ozempic, this place will have you back in those hip huggers before you know it. First off the sign is still from the old Japanese restaurant, no signage for poke bowls. Once you enter you realize it's the poke bowl place because you can see the coffin where they store the food on the far end of the dining room. My dining companion and I both ordered small bowls, one with brown rice and one with sushi rice. They both arrived covered in a brown sticky teriyaki type substance, maybe it was the cover up the fact that both (yes both) types of rice were rancid, my best educated guess would be they probably sat at room temperature for three days to achieve this level of funkiness, I know fermentation is big right now but I don't think rice is a very good vessel for for helping that healthy gut biome. Let's move on to the avocado, still nice and green but tasted like the way the inside of your garbage carriage smells in summer. At this point you might be asking yourself, are you a vegan or something? No, in some blissful attempt to have something I enjoy but rarely eat I ordered the octopus. It was probably from a can (do they even do this?) and make me want to boot my breakfast right on the spot, thankfully that happened a bit later on after I left the restaurant. My partner had the intuition to just stop eating, I had 5 bites or so. Trying to figure out just what the hell was going on, That brown sticky sauce did a good job really confusing my palette for a few minutes, I was kind of in shock, the lady working was very nice and didn't speak great English so I held my nose and paid the bill. As it stands I was unable to think about dinner, and breakfast is not something that I will be participating in either. So far between the boot with no rally and skipping several meals because of a general disdain for anything non liquid going into my mouth I am feeling pretty lean. Maybe it's a good fit for Madison, poke bowls are trendy and college girls are always trying to shed that pesky freshman 15. Went here for the first time with my love. We got Miso soup with our Bento Box meal. Excellent flavor and not too heavy. Great drinks I got the tequila sunrise my love got the Pearl Harbor. We both got the bento boxes I got some chicken which was great and a shrimp tempura roll. My love got tempura everything. We also got a pound of crab and that left a lot to be desired. The crab didn't seem to be the freshest, was extremely skimpy and the best part of it was the creamy butter sauce they provided. They gave us specific sauces for what we ordered and each was delicious. Loved my bento box with the shrimp dumplings and the fruit provided. Great service, nice quality food. Probably not my go to place but definitely will stop there again when I'm in the mood. read more

The food is solid and the service is good. We come here on every trip to Madison when we visit our son.

We went as a family for the hibachi and we had a blast. We were nervous how our 2.5yr old son would do but he loved it. The food was great, my only criticism is it needed more salt for my taste. Outside of the hibachi, This has become my wife's go to spot for sashimi. She says it's some of the best sashimi she's had! First visit to this Japanese restaurant that has been on the east side of Madison for quite a while. I may not be the best person to write a review about the sushi--since I don't eat it BUT if my husband's response to eating it is any indication then it's ok for me to report that he LOVED it all! We got there at a very busy dinner time & had to wait--actually there is no room to wait--we were in the doorway. The bartender was busy and we could not get a drink but were fine waiting. A new hostess was working and was a bit unorganized. The place was packed and there were obviously a lot of "regulars" as we saw several conversing with the staff and be greeted by servers, chefs and the bartender. We saw 4 chefs busily making the sushi rolls behind a small sit down counter directly in front of the sushi station. All chairs were full! Our drinks for the most part were great--my husband ordered a Takumi martini and the couple we were with (who are regulars here) ordered their "usual" drinks which their server knew. My gin & tonic had Roses lime in---not a fan--but could have been a communication error. Our server brought a free tequila sunrise to the table and I happily drank that.
