The Relleno was stuffed with cheese and had just the right kind of egg batter and sauce ( just like Mama used to make). One person serving and one person cooking the meals. So service wasn't fast. Don't expect to rush in and out at this place. But I didn't mind because the meals were delicious and service was excellent. I had fruit water for beverages that was a delicious, fresh drink. Appetizer was a fried fish. Melted in my mouth. Amazing! We are smitten with this lovely little restaurant! It's clean, the staff are fabulously friendly and attentive, and best of all, the food is DELICIOUS! We had the guacamole and chips, quesadillas (rojas, chorizo, pollo), chorizo tacos, and refried black beans. It was all fantastic, home made, and authentic tasting. We took leftovers home too because the portions are generous. The prices are more than fair for the portion size and quality of food. The atmosphere and decor is homey and simple. Absolutely wonderful! Seriously, everything we ordered was fresh and beautifully prepared. The corn tortillas were handmade, the guaq and salsa's were bright and flavorful and everything was very clean. They were happy to accommodate me and my mothers vegetarian request and our waitress was kind enough to explain that it would take a little bit longer because they wanted to make sure that everything was cleaned to ensure that there was no cross contamination, which most restaurants don't do. Our waitress was really great, attentive without being overbearing and very sweet. The portions are very large so come hungry! I seriously cannot recommend this place more. I had all I could do to get it down - it was topped with onions & cilantro which nothing in the soft-shell taco (straight out of the bag) had any flavor! My partner had Chiles rellenos, which was basically just stuffed with cheese in an egg batter - I guess... I've been to a blistering amount of Mexican restaurants over many years, going by the reviews - something doesn't add up - Price point - Too High! Food - Average at Best! A Pipian Verde with a very generous serving of well seasoned and tender pork in a thoroughly enjoyable rich sauce. This is food made w care love and skill. This is a family run business and we had the pleasure of complimenting the owner/cook and her daughter about how much we enjoyed our dinner and that the portions were generous and very reasonably priced. This is one of the worst mexican restaurants I have ever been too. So bad that I decided to write a Yelp Review! I ordered the Bistec Milnesa. The steak was luke warm. Didn't taste fresh at all. I also got a side of White Rice and Beans. The beans were normal and tasted good. The White rice was hard. The rice wasn't cooked long enough for it to become soft and cooked to perfection. I told the waitress and the owner and they didn't seem to care much. The owners were not rude or nasty, but it was clear on their faces that they were annoyed. I was respectful when I told them the issue, but it still got under their skin. I honestly don't understand how they have such a high rating.... If you want good mexican food please go to Chapala Grill in Vails Gate or even Los Portales in Newburgh. Both have great food and for a good value. I will never return to this restaurant. Wow... just wow! Last night while looking for somewhere to go for a late night dinner my husband and I came across Talavera here on Yelp. We drove there and it was in a little Plaza a little out of the way and it first we thought maybe they were getting ready to close but we went to the door anyway and we were greeted by the sweetest young lady, Marianne, who welcomed us in and answered any questions we had about the food and we found out that this was a family run restaurant and they were using only the freshest ingredients. So we placed our orders and were very pleased with our decisions. Everything was so fresh and delicious, in NYC there are so many Mexican restaurants around but none that touch this place. We left with so much food because you couldn't finish it all and it was just one of those experiences that leaves you feeling happily satisfied. We also met Marianne's father who is the chef behind this magical cuisine, and such sweet man. Do yourself a favor if you haven't tried this place give it a shot, you will not be disappointed.
