Great food for this area! Had delivery to Jackson and Western, and got the cashew dish and some Thai spring rolls (the non-fried kind). Loved the cashew dish, snow peas, green peppers, onions, and I added extra broccoli because I love broccoli. The outside of the spring rolls were a little soggy, and the sauce was a little weird, so I might not get those again, but other than that I was very happy with the taste and texture is the food. Came here for my husband's birthday dinner. He was craving sushi, so we wanted to try this new neighborhood spot. The sushi was excellent! We have our new go-to place for reasonably priced sushi, which West Loop has been lacking since Sushi Wabi closed. We went on a Wednesday night, and there were only a few other tables filled. I hope other people learn about this quiet, hidden spot! If I could offer a critique, the mochi ice cream was disappointing. The outer texture wasn't right. Seemed grainy and perhaps old? They may want to add some better dessert options or check on the mochi's expiration date. My girlfriend and I went here for dinner on Easter and had a GREAT meal. First off, this is a bit of a hidden gem down in the west loop area. It's off Madison Avenue, but is very unassuming. Plenty of street parking, depending on the time of day you choose to dine down here. The menu is kind of a hybrid, Sushi, Thai and Chinese. We started out with an order of the baby egg rolls (VERY GOOD) and then moved into Sushi. We got the Godzilla Roll and the Black Pearl roll, both were really good. I am a beginner to the Sushi game, but my girlfriend is a seasoned pro and thought it was really good as well. The prices were very fair (10-12 per roll), the portions were good sized and the service was prompt and courteous. Oh and they have a full bar AND BYOB, you don't see that too often. What an awesome hidden gym off the beaten path in the West Loop! I was very impressed with this place. I had never heard of it but was in the neighborhood and I yelped BYOB sushi places and this one had the highest rating so we decided to check it out. They have sushi and some Thai food as well so you can bring sushi haters here too. Normally I shy away from places that combine different types of Asian food but this place does it right. We ordered pad see eiw for the table to share and ordered the Godzilla roll, Dragon, Tuna Lover (my fave), spider, spicy tuna and spicy salmon. I wasn't super impressed with the Godzilla roll but I loved the rest. The service was excellent and quick. The BEST part of this place is the presentation of the food. It's definitely the most well presented sushi I've ever seen I think (which you can see from my picture). So not only is it delicious, it's presented like artwork so it's a double win! This place is such a hidden gem in a west loop full of high end sushi spots. I have gotten so many of my friends on board to order from here for our Thai food cravings. My plus 1 and I order from here at least once a week. They might have the best fried rice in the game. One of the best things about Talay is that you can order levels of spice with almost every dish, fried rice included. For example, their wonton soup at a "very hot" level is almost too spicy to eat (and I dip baby carrots in hot sauce as a snack). I also HIGHLY recommend their sushi rolls including the Hot Sea (Tuna, salmon, super white tuna, spicy mayo, masago, ginger, avocado, cucumber, tempura crumbs, and sweet soy sauce). (Note: I am the "Professional Thai Food Eater" because, well, I'm Thai.) I know exactly what you're thinking. "This place has an average of 4.5 stars! This 1-star review is the minority. I'm going to just ignore this review, read the positive ones, and convince myself that Talay is going to be great." Let me tell you that I had high hopes for this new Thai restaurant in the West Loop. I was disappointed, even upset that I had such terrible Thai food. I am Thai and I eat Thai food regularly. I grew up eating Thai food, and I would hang out at my family's Thai restaurants growing up. This place has some of the worst Thai food I have ever had in Chicago. I will mention that when my boyfriend and I entered the restaurant, I said "hello" in Thai and the older waitress totally ignored my greeting. She again ignored me when I mentioned to her that she didn't respond to me. She didn't look at me while I said this and asked me what we wanted to order. She was polite, yes. Friendly? I guess. Personable? Absolutely not. This left a very poor initial impression of the place. Apparently she didn't give a fuck about me. I don't know, when my family and I go to Thai restaurants, even when I go alone for pick-up, almost always the Thai employees are very nice and accommodating. That was not the case here AT ALL. She also failed to asked us how spicy we wanted our food. We must've forgotten to tell her, but most of the time, Thai restaurants would ask you this. I was hoping that the food would make up for the stoic, quiet waitress but it did not. It made the experience much, much worse. Here's what we ordered: Yum Woon Sen with Tofu (no fish sauce): This is one of my favorite appetizers. Talay's version was very dry, tasteless, and lacked spiciness. Yes, I know I asked for it without fish sauce, but I've had very good vegetarian Yum Woon Sen elsewhere. Larb Gai: It was very salty, bland, and lacked spiciness. Gaeng Karee: My boyfriend hated this. It was too sweet. The description states that it would be a sweet curry, but it was overwhelmingly sugary. I had a taste of the sauce and I concurred. The vegetables were beyond overcooked. The carrots were mushy, almost like baby food. The sauce itself was VERY watery. My boyfriend's hypothesis is that they added water to prevent the curry from congealing from being heated for too long. This is just a hypothesis though. The sweetness of the curry literally left a bad taste in his mouth that lingered around after dinner. Phad Khee Mao: Hands down one of the worst Phad Kee Mao dishes I've had. The noodles were cooked fine, but again, it was bland, lacked spiciness and IT WAS SWEET. Phad Khee Mao is one of my favorite noodle dishes, and I've never had Phad Khee Mao like this before. When I mentioned that my dish was really sweet, the waitress seemed surprised. Taste your food before you send it out. Needless to say, my boyfriend and I didn't have dessert. We thought entrees would be an improvement after having our appetizers, but the entrees were the worst dishes. Coming here was a waste of money. I'm really pissed that a Thai restaurant would serve this kind of food. What a joke. Normally, I'd feel bad for giving a Thai restaurant such a negative and critical review, but not this time. If you want great Thai food in the neighborhood, you should check out Anna's at Lake and Halsted. The service is better and the food is far superior. It's one of my favorites. (No, I don't work for them or with them.) You can also go to Butterfly Sushi a few blocks away. TLDR; Ignore the raving reviews. I'm Thai, and this was some of the worst Thai food I've had eaten in Chicago. Talay gets 1-star for the service and 0-stars for the food. Avoid this place. It's not worth it. read more

Earlier this summer while I was thinking about eating Thai food at my old standby on Madison, I saw an new option that had an easier parking situation. I know, I know, I shouldn't make food decisions like this but it turned out fine. Don't you judge me you prissy pants foodies..... Anyways, it turned out fine because my Thai food taste buds were awed and amazed. I usually order a spring roll (freshly made, believe me I can tell when it has been sitting all day and is soggy). This was freshly made, I mean right then and there. Spring rolls are my favorite and I hate it when they are yucky. (I am a professional remember...) Curry. I prefer Mussaman or a sweet yellow. Their curry was to my taste. I like it sweet and not bitter. Take that for what you will. Sushi options. Lawd jesus. Had the Volcano which is what I usually get at my standby place. The presentation here is better as it keeps the piece more balanced and easier to eat. I guess for me that is important, I don't have a large mouth. Went back a couple weeks later, had pad thai lunch and it was literally the best Pad Thai I have had since I first tasted Pad Thai more than 15 years ago. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt with the four stars... I'd like to give them 3.5 until I get a chance to sample more of the menu... I love that it's BYOB so Supper Club could make an appearance... people are right, affordable with big portions. I had a bite of the pad thai and it seemed good. I didn't want to have the entire table order pad thai on the first trip there so I branched out and got the Rama Noodle (chicken and broccoli in peanut sauce over wide rice noodles). The sauce was delicious, basically like creamy melted peanut butter, yum. The chicken and broccoli were cooked perfectly but the noodles were a little over done, wop wop. I still ate it and took leftovers home and ate all of those too. So obviously I wasn't too broken up about it. We also got the crab rangoon, veggie egg rolls and baby egg rolls. I only tried the crab rangoon which was good (standard, crispy) and the baby egg rolls which I guess I could take or leave. Nothing outstanding. I did get the Thai Iced Tea and it was fabulous, my first thai iced tea ever and I'm a fan. The service was a bit odd... my dish came out probably a good 10 minutes after the other four. Always awkward. So is the lady asking about appetizers after we finished our meals and got to go boxes. It wasn't until after we realized she was asking how we wanted to split the appetizers up on the bill but it was a solid 15 minutes of confusion. We've been here 3 times since it opened and it is great! Service is friendly and fast. Atmosphere and decor is chill - somewhere between laid back and hip. There are TVs, which is usually a turn off for me but they aren't placed in a way that makes them distracting. When they play music, it is a good mix. I tried a red curry that was great, pad see ew - also great, Mongolian beef which was good but nothing special, and several sushi rolls (godzilla, spicy crunchy tuna, spicy salmon, rainbow, avocado salmon), and all were yummy. My partner had the pad thai which he liked, but I thought was just average. We had the crab rangoon app and that was also good. The sushi is fresh and not over the top fried and soaking in cream cheese, so you can pretend that it is relatively healthy. (Not that I have anything against fatty fried creamy cheese deliciousness!). This is turning into a weekly stop for us now. It is a great option for when you and your better half can't decide between Thai, sushi or Chinese as you can both get what you want! Also, the prices are very reasonable. It is BYOB for now, but they have applied for a liquor license. They seem to do a lot of takeout as well. Check them out! read more

Swung by Saturday evening for dinner as a group of three. The space was quite spacious. It was a beautiful night so we opted to sit outside. We were a little weary as it was quite empty, but figured everyone was roaming the Taste of Randolph nearby. We also had trouble finding parking, but likely only because of the nearby fest. Don't think it would be as troublesome otherwise. We started with the veggie potstickers. These were great, and not as easy to find in other restaurants...usually just a meat version. I got a small chicken tom yum soup and a garlic chicken noodle. I've had better tom yum before, but they are definitely not skimpy on their ingredients. It was very filling, as were the veggie soups my friends ordered. I enjoyed my garlic noodle and was garlicky enough for my Asian self to be satisfied. Considering I'm not a huge fan of Thai food, I was quite pleased. What I loved most about this place was their service. Our server was very friendly and helpful. She was on point the whole time. My friend is a vegetarian and without her even stating so, our server got the hint from the questions and options she had. She right away noted that the tom yum used a chicken broth and the garlic noodles used fish sauce, which wasn't clear on the menu and noted the real vegetarian options to my friend. This was refreshing because many places often don't take the time to explain nor do they understand dietary restrictions, but our server made it very clear. It was also quite easy to have many items customized to your liking regarding the main proteins and spice levels. Overall, if I were feeling Thai, I would come back here, as prices and portions were quite good and service was great. I would also very much like to try their sushi options. I also enjoyed that we were able to catch up with each other without being in a noisy environment or being elbow to elbow with the next table, that is often the case with restaurants in the West Loop. read more

We are always shocked at how easy it is to get in for dine-in, I think they are heavy for delivery/pick-up business. The food is always hot, fresh and quick and the portions sizes are great! I recommend the Godzilla Maki and the Siam Chicken (or anything with peanut sauce!). Also, the owner is super friendly and hardworking- he's always there and even delivered our food before and got it there on time despite the Chicago P.D. episode being filmed on our block! I went with Jade (who left a much longer review), and was extremely disappointed in this restaurant. The service was fine, but the dishes were absolutely terrible. It was the worst Thai food I've had in Chicago. It was even worse than Panang on Clark & Chicago (though it was close). The larb gai appetizer I had was salty, but otherwise flavorless, and my entree was worse. Yellow curry is supposed to be a mild curry, but here it was sweet. And by sweet, I mean it was sweet like it was a dessert. I'm not sure how much sugar they put in it, but someone went way overboard (not that they should be putting any sugar in it). It was also watery like soup, and had obviously been sitting around all day. There were carrot slices in the curry which were just a touch more firm than baby food. I had originally been intending to order dessert, but I was so turned off after that disaster of an entree that I just wanted to get out of there. On the walk home my stomach got a little grumpy, though it was nothing serious and I'm not sure whether or not it can be attributed to the food. It may also be worth noting that we went there on a Thursday, if I remember correctly. There were 3 or 4 other tables there during the time we were in the restaurant and 1 or 2 carry out orders, but they were not very busy. It's possible that they didn't have their best people in the kitchen, but I really don't care to try and test that theory given other options in the area. Food that bad is unacceptable. read more

My new fav place for Thai food! My bf and I went on a thursday night after work and there didn't have a problem getting a seat. The decor is more modern and upscale than the Usual Thai restaurant. We were surprised to look at the menu and find so many great options. We landed on pad woon sen (substitute wide noodles), spicy tuna roll and spider roll. Pad woon sen- so fresh and flavorful. Talay is a favorite of my wife and I. Their Pad Thai stands up to other Thai places we've been. My favorite dish is their Red Curry. And a couple of new dishes we like that are worth trying are the Tiger Cry and Pad Talay. (Good paleo options.) I would give them 5 stars except the service can be REALLY slow sometimes when dining in whenever the staff is getting slammed with take-out and delivery orders. And they don't do a good job bringing food out to everyone in your party at the same time. I once had my order brought to me about 20 minutes before anyone else got theirs. We would just stick to take-out because of the hit or miss (more often a miss) service but the fact that it's BYOB (no corkage fees!) means we can usually deal with the slow service. If you decide to go, bring your own booze, be prepared to have finished your meal before your dining partner gets theirs, and enjoy your delicious meal. read more

Their sushi is better than their Thai menu. Its a decent place with a good decor and nice service. We ordered the tempura asparagus maki, tom yum vegetable soup and the Garlic entree with tofu. The maki roll was delicious - fresh and flavorful. The same can't be said about the other two dishes. All I can say about them is overwhelming saltiness. I could not finish the soup - because it was soo salty. It was full of delicious, fresh vegetables but could not look past the saltiness. The garlic entree was good, but again way too salty. My husband and I have been frequent customers of Talay for years - it's one of our favorite places from which to order delivery. For anyone looking for a vegetarian roll - the Farmer's Market Roll is the best veggie sushi I've ever had! It's substantial and delicious! When we moved about a year ago, we moved just outside the bounds within which Talay delivers to. So we've been ordering less frequently. A couple weeks ago, we decided we had to have it. We committed to driving to the shop to pick up the food. When we got home, we realized only half of our order was in the bag. (We should have double checked prior to leaving.) When we called the store, they were apologetic and apparently had tried calling us a few times, but at the wrong phone number. They went above and beyond and offered to have the remainder of the order dropped off to us at our home. I'm pretty sure the owner himself drove the order over to us. He wouldn't accept further tip for it either. We were very impressed w the customer service. We've been big fans of Talay for a while bc of the food itself, but the customer service we experienced further solidifies our appreciation for the business. read more
