What a terrific meal and atmosphere. Open soon after Shabbat ended and we sat for hours having a leisurely delicious and abundant meal. I wouldn't generally go for French fries but they brought over a plate for the table and they were clearly cut fresh potatoes even though they appeared just like any other fries. I even asked if one of the appetizers (breaded cauliflower) could be substituted as a side for my dish and he accommodated what I know can be annoying request.

this was my second time here and i had another good experience, although there were some strange things. we called in advance to make sure that they were open, as we were going at 10:30 pm and the website said they were open until 1:00 am. we called and they said they were open, but when we got there, they seemed confused and asked if we were there for shawarma. we said no that we were here for talia's and asked if that was okay. the man was pretty rude and barely even answered us. then a nice man came out and said sorry and that he'd check if it was okay. after he said that it was fine, we ordered and our waiter was incredibly nice. he brought us a complimentary plate with hummus, baba, israeli salad and more. it was amazing and the pita was warm and yummy. our food came out pretty quickly and was absolutely delicious. something that i thought was odd was that they were playing 90s hip hop, which i love, but i think is strange for a kosher restaurant. again our server was amazing and so was the food. when we paid, my grandfather said to bring the receipt back so he could leave a tip and our waiter said that the system they used didn't let us or something. my grandpa gave him some cash which he refused as first but eventually took very gratefully. i like this restaurant, and i will be back, but sometimes there is a weird vibe

Date Night - Starter on the House

My sister made a reservation to come here last Saturday night. She had bought a Groupon for 4 people and invited me and my boyfriend to join them for dinner. It was an spectacular experience. Everything was perfect. Elena/Helena was our waitress, she was incredible and made sure everything was exceptional for us. We received an appetizer on the house, which was "Homemade Hummus, Tahini, Babaganoush, eggplant salad, red cabbage slaw and beets", my sister and her boyfriend tried and loved every single thing. They also served some pita bread with pesto and pesto cream cheese or pesto butter on the house, not sure which one but was good anyway. We started the night with a bottle of red wine, Cabernet Sauvignon to be exact, which was more than excellent. The Groupon offered two bottles, we received the second with our steaks. We ordered appetizers and salads afterward, which were also included on the Groupon. We had Bbq Crispy Chicken Wings and Moroccan Cigars accompanied with Talia's Salad and Roasted Beet Salad, everything was appetizing and tasteful, definitely inviting us to anxiously wait for what was left. After the appetizers, Helena served our entree choices. The four of us ordered Ribeye Steaks, of course they were incredibly juicy, exquisite, mouthwatering. We were definitely in Heaven. Each Entree came with two sides, as per our Groupon. I ordered the incredible Mashed Potatoes and Sweet Potato Fries and they were both simply perfect. The mash potatoes were made with some garlic taste, it was very flavorful. We went down a bottle and like 1/4 of the second and then ordered dessert, which was also included in the Groupon. We had two desserts, ordered a Tiramisu and Chocolate Cake. Helena informed us the Tiramisu was kosher, in case we wanted to change our option, we acknowledged but decided to keep the order. We made the right decision, the Tiramisu was lovely. We all loved it. After all the food, our waitress Helena brought the bill, which included just the taxes as the Groupon does not cover for them. We stood at the restaurant for about another hour and finished the Wine Bottle. It was a lovely experience as much as it was a lovely evening. In our opinion (unanimous), the price of the Groupon does not even cover 1/4 of the amount of the scrumptious food we were able to consume and enjoy on our visit, plus also getting two bottles of wine, along with an outstanding, splendid service from our waitress and all the staff at the restaurant. Definitely looking forward to come here again and devour another one of those savory, delightful, succulent Ribeye steaks. And definitely would be lucky and would love to have Helena hosting our evening again.

    Best chicken shnitzel around...

Consistently delicious food whether their addictive crispy cauliflower, traditional burger with amazing fries never over salted and the the best matzah ball soup, you don't leave disappointed. The owner cares about the customers' experience which really has me back for more! Talia's and Shawarma Shabazi next door should not be missed!

Came here last night after a long time because they were having a 2 night Indian cuisine and was curious to see how a steakhouse will manage to pull this off. But boy oh boy, did they. We had to wait awhile for our table of 8 cause the restuarant was completely full and the crowd was really enjoying the food. The wait was worth it cause that Chicken Biyani, Lamb Potato Curry and Chicken tikka masala were very authentic and delicious. They also comped our drinks at the bar and the appetizers, which was very thoughtful. The crew is very professional and courteous. And the owner, Effie, is one super host and very welcoming and understanding. Will definitely be going back to try out their steaks and lamb chops. Bravo to them on maintaining this restuarant for all these years on the upper west side.

    Desert, Tirimisu.

Velvety with great mouth feel and lovely smokiness this was so good w/ their table bread Turkish Ravioli (Manti) (APP, 3/5) - Chewy little nuggets w. yogurt filling, it was pretty enjoyable though my colleague gave ma "Meh" since she makes them at home and probably has high bar. It was good for maybe the first 3 or 4, so perhaps better ordered for larger groups. Shepherd Salad (APP, 4/5) - Fresh, bright(as in vinegar), and herbaceous, we added feta cheese to it and it was perfect balance to our entree. Kofte Kebab (MAIN, 4/5) - Not too dry with packed flavor of all the herbs & beef, I really enjoyed my dish. Went great with all the other accouterments such as slightly cinged wedge of tomato and onion slices, all frolicking on a bed of warm rice that had a nice bite. Adana Kebap (MAIN, 4/5) - My colleague had this one, and I tried a piece. It was juicy and had no hint of gaminess which is always a plus for lamb. 3. Service (3/5) - This being a mom & pop store, I think they're short on staff. Usually they're all in the back cooking, so you do need to be a bit patient to flag someone down. But I'm sure they're more attentive during busy hours. (We went during weekday) Overall, Hakki Baba is a solid turkish mom & pop shop that delivers on great authentic flavor at a reasonable price. In the sea of turkish restaurants in Cliffside Park area, this one is one of my favorite. Pay them a visit!

Also plusses in Miriam's favor were the fact that I could easily make a reservation (they use SevenRooms) and its proximity to the Museum of Natural History. Many of the menu items looked appealing. Two of us ordered the latkes Benedict ($27) which I loved. Instead of Canadian bacon, you're served smoked salmon. And swap out the regular hollandaise for a harissa version. There was also za'atar labneh and a chopped salad with cucumbers and tomatoes on the side, also delectable. The third person ordered the traditional shakshuka ($24) which also earned acclaim. I have to give a thumbs up to the hummus. The hostess was peppy and welcoming. Our server was more scarce towards the end of the meal for some reason, but she was nice, and the busboy seemed cool. While there's outside seating too, it was a zillion degrees so the air conditioned and classy dining room was the right choice for us.

I have been twice now, once on the East Side and again last night on the West Side, and I came away both times with the same impression: that some places are content to simply be good, over and over, without announcing it. The watermelon salad is sweet and hot at the same time, feta and mint against Italian chile, and it is the right thing to have first. The schnitzel is what it ought to be. The kebab, lamb and beef together, is the thing I would order if I were only allowed one thing. The knafeh cups are better on the East Side, where the crisp kataifi is laid over the cream rather than baked into a shell around it. On the West Side you have to break into the cup before you get anywhere. On the East Side the spoon goes straight down through the crunch and into the cream, and that is the whole difference. But it is the people I keep thinking about. They are kind without performing kindness, which is harder than it sounds. Last night I watched the room work, water poured, plates cleared, dishes set down, and it was never quite the same hand doing it, and never once the wrong one. A floor moves that way only when everyone on it is paying attention to everyone else. Two visits, two neighborhoods, one restaurant. I suspect that is the point.

When we arrived it was empty however by the time we finished, there were many tables filled. The bad thing is that there was only 1 server during brunch. It took forever to get our check and even a to-go bag for our leftovers. We ordered for apps, the grand mezze dish with all of the different spreads, such as hummus, red pepper, tzatziki, eggplant, wow! It was delicious and to top it off they have homemade pita bread! Which was a huge highlight! Even my baby loved their homemade pita bread! For our mains, we ordered branzino, which was such a small sad piece, literally just half of a filet. Would never order again. We also got the mixed meats which came with kafta, lamb, chicken a few pieces of each, and also this was so sad, the pieces were SO small. And we also got this Fattat Jaj (which is a 6 layer dish with chicken, rice chickpeas). Honestly all of the mains were such a disappointment. Full of rice, not a lot of meat in any of the dishes. Especially the Fattat Jaj, which literally was just rice with a bunch of small crispy pita bread, barely had any chicken. While we really enjoyed the mezze platter, especially the homemade pita bread, all of the mains were SO small and terrible. Full of rice and salad and barely any meats (despite we ordered all meat and fish dishes). Sad portions. Would not return.
