I'm actually surprised of how good this place was! The food tasted so delicious and fresh. It's literally a chipotle but better, fresher, and kosher! The local is pretty small but has everything it needs: a bathroom, tables and chairs to sit on, and most importantly the food. The staff there was so nice and friendly. The prices were great. Before arriving here I kind of decided that this place would be one of two things - 1. absolutely amazing or 2. a complete waste of time and stomach space. I am so that that my experience here was the former and not the latter. I visited Mexikosher, without knowing anything about it's Top Chef history. I was coming from the gym and this was one of the few things that were open in the area around 10pm. The two workers were very nice and quite funny. I ordered the duck and pork rice bowl and was pleased with the outcome. Before ordering the dish, I thought this dish was too pricey. That idea changed when I saw the portions of the rice bowl. Let me start off by saying that we were starving when we got here. The highlight of my day was this mexican spot! The chicken the chef made today was some of the best fried chicken I have ever had! It was battered in jalepenos and had a super crunchy corn flake crust. I loved the pulled lamb and beef burrito it was loaded in flavor! The sauces here are great and spicy. So if you watched Top Chef Boston or "Chopped" - Chef Katsuji Tanabe is the celebrity chef that celebrates his Japanese and Mexican heritage. He has already opened his Mexi-Kosher restaurant in LA. The menu is pretty limited and so is the seating. They only have bar stool seating against the restaurant's wall available. I ordered the rice bowl with chicken. I got to pick out vegetables to go with my order.Every vegetable was included except guacamole, which had an extra charge. They gave me a whole breast of chicken, which they sliced up. The portion size was good. But the food itself didn't taste that great. It was bland and didn't taste like Mexican food. Star #2: The quantity of the food is worth the slightly higher-than-normal price. A nachos meal, with all the toppings, could easily serve 4 'semi-hungry' people or 1 really, really hungry person. Star #3: The variety of toppings is a treat. Pickled Red Onions on my nachos? Yes please! Star #4: The variety of salsas/sauces is also commendable. Try the Bacon Chipotle. Just try it. Star #5: Lastly, the weekday hours is what makes this place feel like 'true New York'. If I want my 11PM Nachos on a Thursday night, they're open. Great spot for a filling meal with real food and great flavors. I ordered the taco carnitas which comes with 3 soft corn tacos filled with a mixture of duck and beef and personalized toppings and sauces. It also came with a side of rice and refried beans which tasted amazing too. I came hungry and left so full and I didn't even finish everything I got! My husband got a rice bowl with biria (beef and lamb) in a 9 inch circle aluminum pan and also chose the toppings (salads) and sauces. He couldn't finish his bowl either! "Toppings" include pico de gallo, pickled carrots, pickled beets, a chimichuri like topping, onions, corn salad, various veggies and more. The sauces are incredible too and include chipotle, "bacon" bbq, mango habanero, tomatillo, and more. Heads up, they're all on the spicy side but so good. Great for kosher meat! Had the carnitas on tacos with guacamole and the grilled chicken burrito. The chicken burrito was good and the tacos were great! Just be careful with the sauces, they are all spicy and if you are not used to it they can ruin your meal. Not good for groups. Maximum two people if you want to find seats and be comfortable. 4 stars because prices are high for the ambiance of the restaurant. Two people (with soft drinks) 43 dollars. I ordered takeout here and I must say, I'm very disappointed. I ordered a rice bowl and it was so salty, that I felt myself developing kidney stones with every bite. In addition, the chicken was dry and the guacamole was liquidy with an overwhelming lemony flavor. I've ordered here a couple times before and wasn't this disappointed. However, what I ate isn't even advertised on the menu. It's schnitzel with jalapeños and it's absolutely delicious. I love this new addition to the upper west side! I got the vegetarian platter, which I found to be super filling and fully of flavor. The rice is warm and fluffy, the vegetables are very well seasoned! Not only is it more authentic than Chipotle's vegetarian bowls, it tastes a lot better and is Kosher!!! Wildly overpriced, bland, in-authentic kosher Mexican food. I came here with a group of 4, and we ordered vegan burritos, and a side of fries. I got the vegan salad, which came to $13. It was essentially a large handful of lettuce, tiny scoops of tasteless rice and beans, and some other vegetables on top. It was edible, but not tasty by any means. My friends described their $15 burritos as barely edible, and the portions tiny. The side of fries were overcooked and soaked in oil. I love French fries and could not eat these. Overall, the food was terrible, with the exception of a few of the sauces. The peanut and chipotle sauces were both very tasty; possibly the only redeeming quality of the experience. The service was okay-the cashier made a joke about us ordering vegan, which I didn't appreciate. This is not Mexican food, this is not good food, and this is not cheap food. I would not recommend Mexikosher to anyone, unless I strongly disliked them. read more

This is less "kosher Mexican" than "Mexican that happens to be kosher." It's very good, and feels fresh and even gourmet, but expensive -- eg the cheapest tacos on the menu, chicken, are $13 for 3. If you go, try the salsas. All of the salsas. They are exceptional. The fellow behind the counter, when I was there, had good pairing recommendations, but I ended up trying just about every salsa indepedently. The fermented chili sauce tastes *green*. For fillings, the chicken was fine, but the birria (a mix of braised lamb and beef) was very good, and the daily special--lightly-fried fish--was superlative, with all of the flavors and the textures--crunch and goo, sweet and savory, fresh and fried--all mixed up in there in harmony. Note, it's a tiny place, and kosher-keeping diners seem to be flocking here, maybe to try something different, so there are lines at peak times. There's a fun history to the place too. Read up on the the chef, Katsuji Tanabe, on the shop's walls. A Japanese-Mexican chef who started a kosher taco shop in L.A. Love it. read more

My friends and I have been waiting forever for a kosher Mexican restaurant that isn't Carlos and Gabby's (yuck). Literally the other day we were saying, wouldn't it be amazing if we could get authentic Mexican? Then we LOLd about how it would never happen. Well, it happened. (Next up, can someone please open an authentic Thai kosher place?). As far as kosher food, this is authentic as Mexican is gonna get. Having not always kept kosher, I am well versed in the real Mexican food world (see my review of all of the tacos trucks, ever). I love me a good taco, and since going kosher I can't say I'm upset that the amazing burrito place down the street closed (sorry, that's so selfish...), because I probably would have been sneaking in there. Anyway... We went to Mexikosher last night and ordered the birria burrito and the chips and guac. My husband and I shared the aforementioned items, and when we asked the counter guy if he thought the chips and guac would be enough for two people or if we should order two, he said "I never share with my wife." HA. Well, we share, guy... so we ordered one order, which was perfectly enough for two people with the burrito. While our burrito was delicious, we did think it was on the small side, which is unfortunate when your burrito is $17 (however, it should be noted that for kosher meat this is not entirely unfounded - on the other hand, the same burrito is $12 in LA, so clearly it's partly Manhattan up-pricing, grr). Others have noted that there is absolutely not room in this busy joint, and it's true. We took our food to the nearby park outside the Museum of Natural history - and noted several guys in kippas doing the same. It would be great if they could expand so there is a reasonable amount of seating. Would I come here again? Sure - but not unless someone invited me for a special occasion or something. While I am proud of myself for riding my bike from BedStuy to the UWS to pre-empt my Mexican food consumption, spending $17 on a burrito is not something I plan to do regularly. However, big ups for chef Katsuji and his crew - we really needed this option (oh and all the Jewish moms fawning over him is priceless, ha). Mexikosher! read more

I ordered a chicken burrito, gf got the veggie. The menu says veggie comes with "all our vegetables" which apparently means only rice and beans. The toppings were unevenly cut and looked like they had been sitting for a while. Dude rolling the burrito clearly doesn't know what a burrito is; he was making squares! It was like someone told him about burritos but never even showed him a picture. So let's summarize: misleading menu description; nasty toppings; poorly rolled. I had the carne asada tacos and BBQ wings last week. Stopped in and there was a short line. The meat was cooked on the grill as I waited and the line guys were helpful but a bit short on time. The prices for most everything are higher than other fast casual spots, and the ingredients seem better than most. They seem understaffed but the manager /head cook was very personable and like his owner, enjoys the public. Overall its not for everyday but its a tasty treat and i did not leave hungry read more

I wanted to love it. It's kosher. It's fresh and finally authentic. But unfortunately it seems to have the same problems that plague so many kosher restaurants. I mean who on a Sunday at 5 pm does not have salad. We quite actually ordered everything on the menu and I thought the most impressive things were the sauces - packed with flavor. The meat was all a little dry but perhaps that is because we did takeout. The wings were cooked perfectly but there was nothing original or Mexican about them and I would have loved some fake ranch or something like that with them. What a find in the UWS! Line is out the door every night! Delicious and fresh mexican prepared right in front of you. I went by to grab lunch and tried the lamb and beef barria salad - yummy! Well, full disclosure: we only had the fried chicken chipotle sandwich but I vacuumed it up and literally had a fight with my wife over the scraps ("Don't order me anything. I'm not hungry"). I didn't know what to expect from Mexikosher now that it seems to be three (four?) separate restaurants in one. I must say I was pleasantly surprised enough to write this review. I ordered the family meal from Rosa's and the duo platter from Graze. I think you'd probably need 3-4 sides for the family meal to really feed a family, but $31 for a whole kosher chicken and two sides seems like a deal to me. And it was delicious. The duo platter from Graze was pricier and smaller, and it would be a stretch for it to feed two people. But, nevertheless, it was superb. The pickles were maybe the best pickles I've ever had in my life, and I've had a lot of pickles. I can't believe I hadn't tried this restaurant before - and they delivered super quickly! PLEASE order from here so we can continue to have good, reasonably priced kosher food on the UWS. read more

Our office is strictly kosher, so we use restaurant semi annually for our showroom meetings. So good, the boss questioned twice in a row if it was "kosher," and how do I know. I haven't been inside the restaurant but I can vouch for their catering. This time we were slipped (maybe by accident) some beets and carrots. I'm not sure how it relates to Mexican food, but they were interesting. Almost tasted pickled with cinnamon maybe? Guacamole is on point and amazing!!! 4 stars because I haven't been inside and the guacamole had stem pieces which isn't fun to surprisingly chew on. read more

This spot seemed decent online however, when we opened up the rice each and every container contained little hair pieces seemed like men hair. One of them contained a long piece. After witnessing so many pieces of hair we had to throw out 80% of the food. We did contact them but it all went unnoticed. Please check for hair pieces. I wouldn't recommend this place. read more
