After a delicious dinner across the street around 530, my wife and I weren't ready to leave Talkeetna. We didn't want to go drinking. What we wanted was a coffee shop to hang out in. We found that in The Roadhouse. It was a warm, cozy place with several fireplaces, couches, and tables with chairs. They had games, puzzles, and magazines to read. The only bummer was they didn't have decaf coffee. Honestly, I just don't think they were willing to brew a new pot of decaf. I saw a decaf pitcher all cleaned out and we came in about 2 hours before they closed in a night when we were the only ones there. They are also a lodge with six different sleeping options. Each room has a different setup and each one costs a little different. They start at around 67 a night (in the winter).

This is a "half" chocolate chip hot cake and was delicious!

This place was so great we ate here a second time when returning to Anchorage from Denali. From hot cakes to eggs and yogurt bowl all of us loved our breakfast and the service by Angela could not have been better. The whole feel of the place is welcoming and while very busy, it just rocked and all people we interfaced with at couldn't have been nicer. A fun place in a very interesting city!!!

The little, shared bunk room next to the check out desk.

Terrifically, fantastically super awesome. There's just not much to Talkeetna. Especially in the fall. Half the restaurants are closed, the touristy shops are closed, the hostel is closed. I couldn't find a place on AirBnB and what little research I did said that hotels were going to be pricey. I've been known to sleep in my car when hotel rates get too high but that seemed like a poor idea in a place like Alaska. So I called the Roadhouse. The gal explained that they had this solo cabin for a hundred and whatever and an upstairs room for eighty whatever. When I explained that I was looking for something cheaper she said "Well, there's the shared bunkhouse room for $24." Jackpot! That's what we're talking about. With tax it was $28.08 and it turns out I didn't even have to share it. I was the only guy in the room. And when they say roadhouse they mean it. This place is a combination restaurant, motel, laundromat, shower station. Heck if you needed a massage or a ride somewhere they could probably coordinate that too. They were kind and welcoming, my room was sparkling clean and breakfast, even the half sized breakfast was huge. Staying at the Roadhouse was a pleasure. If I was headed again to Talkeetna I'd book with them in a heartbeat.

    For sale!!

This review is going to be short because we have to be wheels up in a few minutes. This place is fantastic. The service is friendly efficient and informative about the history of the roadhouse. Portions are massive if you're not too hungry to if you could split the half size. I was still full from our tacos and quesadilla last night so I opted for the casserole. It's for sale so if you want to move to this darling little town and on a lodging facility with bakery restaurant - this is the place to make your dreams come true!!

    Reindeer chili.

This place is the epitome of Talkeetna. No frills, simple but quality. It is a working hotel on top of a restaurant. Is it overpriced? Absolutely. But everything in the town is. My husband got a bowl of reindeer chili which was $15 but he enjoyed it and it was hearty meal on a colder day. I got poutine (fries, cheese, reindeer and sausage gravy) which is so bad for you in the best way. Loaded it up with hot sauce and it was great. We also snagged some "Rudy in a blankets" to take on our drive the next day for breakfast. They were good! If you're in talkeetna, you have to go here. Period. End of story.

Biscuit and gravy with a side of bacon

This place was amazing, the food is really good and the service is amazing! There are not many options in Talkeetna but the few that they have are impressive, small town friendliness that can't compare. The portions are big and hot. My daughter had the biscuits and gravy, she loved the gravy and her side bacon was thick and Well flavored. My fiance had the reindeer sausage with eggs, he loved it too. I had the breakfast wrap, which I could not finish because it was so big, I added guacamole and sour cream on the side. Their coffee is magnificent, some of the stuff on the menu already comes with a hot and a cold drink, so make sure you check. The prices are not bad. They also have pastries, that smell so good, we got a couple for our road trip to Denali. Totally recommend this place.

Warm & Friendly atmosphere & staff with awesome food. We got the yogurt, fresh blueberry and granola bowl & an order of pancakes with berries and rhubarb. Very good. We also tried the reindeer sausage which was really yummy.

The "Standard" breakfast, nothing standard about it!

Lives up to the hype, you get ALL THE THINGS! The breakfast comes with a HOT DRINK and a COLD DRINK for crying out loud! (notice I said AND not OR, there is a chasm of difference between these two words, as anyone with even rudimentary programming or logic experience can attest) Most breakfast joints will nickle and dime you so hard on beverages. $2-3 hot chocolates and juices with no free re-fills are common place. NOT here. And if anywhere has the right to nickle and dime you for CITRUS JUICE, it's ALASKA. As others have said, the portions here are huge...but they aren't slop. They aren't huge like your typical Denny's/Village Inn/SYSCO-Diner-on-the-side-the-innerstate. They are huge AND home made, great food. I have an infamously huge appetite. When I first moved to Anchorage I was chatting with a Denali climber (one of the few, the proud, the people that summit'd in 2014) and he was saying "no matter how hungry you think you are, don't get the big size, the regular size is big enough". He was correct. I reluctantly got the regular size and I was not disappointed! I love the open-seating. In this WiFi/smartphone/tablet/laptop world, sometimes we need to be forced against our will to flap out mouth-holes with our fellow homo sapiens. This place will do that to you, if that sounds scary, I suggest you go somewhere else and free up a seat for me! You'll find people in here from all over the world during Denali-climbing season and from at least all over the US during summer (tourist season). Most of the servers seem to be from Eastern Europe and are extremely efficient as well as kind and considerate. If you ain't got no time for a sit-down breakfast; you can grab their delicious-looking baked goods, a coffee, and hit the road.

The Talkeetna Roadhouse is a must visit when you are in the area! I am going to start my review on the accommodations which are FANTASTIC!! I have stayed in every room in the main lodge as well as the bunks and they are so comfortable, clean and cozy you really cannot go wrong. The showers and washrooms are shared but always very clean and accessible. They even have a laundry facility on sight for you to use. I recently stayed at their newest addition the "Garden Cabin" which is off sight but still very close to town. As of right now the Garden Cabin is a dry cabin with an outhouse located out back but seriously do not let that discourage you!! Upon sight it seems like a simple unassuming little place to stay but when you walk in you will fall in love!! A deck for you to relax on and watch the birds play, a hammock hanging under the birch trees to chill in and doze and the most adorable inside features. A gas burning stove is connected to the thermostat for a wonderful cozy atmosphere. Coffee, tea, water and hot chocolate all on sight. All of this tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Talkeetna but close enough to walk to and from town to enjoy the sights!!! The food situation is equally fantastic. You MUST have a razzy, a Rudy In a parka and a pastey. The sourdough pancakes are off the hook as well!!!

Granola, yogurt and fruit. Perfect way to start the day!!

This seems to be the one place in Talkeetna that people recommend for breakfast. It was delicious, and it was fun to sit at the table with other people and compare Alaska stories. The Half Breakfast Platter was more than enough food. Our boys loved the hot chocolate, and the coffee was very good. Breakfast would be four stars. We went back for dinner and were not has happy. One of the meals was burnt, although it was readily replaced, and the rest of us were not happy with our selections. 2 stars for dinner. Average: three stars.

    Full bed with twin bunk

Unlike most people, we didn't eat here so I can't comment on the food. We were there on a lazy Sunday evening and opted to sit in the rocking chairs on the porch and share a pitcher of beer and people watch. The server was very nice and she didn't seem at all perturbed that we only wanted beer. I did walk through the place and checked out the rooms and the shower and stuff. The Roadhouse is a VERY cool piece of Talkeetna history. One of the rooms has a full mattress with a twin bunk over top, which is very hostel-esque. Another room I saw looked very B&B-y with a Queen bed and it looked plenty comfy. A local mentioed to me that there is very cool cabin out back for rent as well. The showers/bathroom is okay, but I wouldn't be thrilled with bathing in there. Bring flip flops if you have to bathe there. Showers are included in your room rate if you stay, but if you're dropping in for a shower it's like 4-5 bucks. This place has a lot of history, it's definitely worth dropping in even for a cup of coffee and hang out in the reading/game/fireplace room.

This is a great little gem of a restaurant in this adorable little town in Alaska. They have counter service if you just want to grab & go. But you should stay awhile! They have wonderful breakfast options and you are served at family-style tables. I love this because tourists, locals and everyone in-between can sit and share stories. We heard about a black bear cub that keeps coming onto one patron's porch (she doesn't want to shoot it so she hopes it goes away!). We heard some folks who came in on a cruise ship talk about their experiences. We heard from a woman who was "off the grid" and was just coming in for a bite to eat and to run to the post office. It was fun! The food is delicious. I had a green chili casserole - kind of like quiche without the bread. It was so yummy. My husband got the pancake with birch syrup (an Alaskan specialty) and thick cut bacon. Tea and coffee were both good. We left full and happy. One last great things about this restaurant - it's a "no tip, fair wage" structure. Their prices are a little higher, but no tipping is allowed and they pay every employee a living wage no matter their contribution. Everyone was friendly and we had great service all around. We also left with two bottles of their homemade hot sauce, a bottle of birch syrup, a coffee mug and a sticker - why not be quintessential tourists every now and then?!

    Hot cake and eggs, etc.

Really delicious breakfast food! It is family style seating, so be prepared to grab any table available. The food is about $10 per person, but the specials and breakfast meal combinations include a hot and cold drink and/or a meat, hot cakes (giant pancake), and/or eggs. It was a fun stop and practically the only place open early in the morning in town. So, it's a great escape from Mosquitos. After a leisure breakfast with very friendly staff, you can even check our their restrooms. It's really a shower/bathroom combo people can pay to use because apparently water is very scarce in Talkeetna. This place is also a bread and breakfast. The bakery is really good also. I had a salmon pasty and mini blueberry pie and muffin. It was fresh, tasty, and not that expensive. I also ended up buying some birch syrup because our guide said it's made locally and people sometimes prefer it over maple! Well, buy it here because at the airport it is $3+ more expensive.

My other half took a look at it and discounted it as a puppy stop not a cafe. We all lamented and insisted must stop on the drive back. We did and thank God because is THE BEST FOOD SPOT BETWEEN ANCHORAGE & DENALI. we pulled up not knowing what to expect and found a super cute trailer, well maintained & cleaned with lots of cute seating, games and music! There was also a doggy that was beautiful and wonderful to see, we missed any dog exhibitions or sled pulls but the food and drink made it so we did not feel like we were missing anything. We had smoothies, Mac n cheese, sandwiches and a lotus energy drink that I Loved and had never heard of and it gave me enough energy that I'm writing this review while driving back rather than dozing off. The service was kind, attentive and patient. We didn't know what to expect and were taking a while, add to that 3 little girls that had a million questions and you have a real test in hospitality. They passed it all. If you are driving between anchorage & Denali and don't stop, you are missing out. Do not let the idea of it being paired off with pups discourage you. Honestly very simple, but some of the best food we've had while visiting and I have been wearing my way through Alaska. Ohhhh and don't forget to ask about the secret menu or be afraid of trying g their pickle soup. It's all winners!!!!

Where do I even begin--the food, the staff, the location? All three were absolutely perfect for us!…read moreWe ended up going three times in just two days, and every visit was a hit. Between the rich chai, the flavorful BLT, my son's Ziggy panini, the triple berry dessert with ice cream, and my other son's simple yet satisfying toast and bacon--everything was delicious and clearly made with care. The staff were genuinely invested in what they do, and it showed in both their service and the quality of the food. The ambiance - open air, picnic tables, - and more make this a great, inclusive, welcoming cafe! Turns out after talking to the ladies working one of them was a student in my college friend's class way back when. Hands down this is the place to go eat! Oh, i'd be remiss if I didn't mention my one complaint: they don't have a location in Seattle.
