Wow people! The low reviews are breaking my heart. But based on what people have written I don't blame them for the low stars (because I would feel the same way) but I can say for myself getting tamales here, this has definitely not been my experience. The tamales here are delicious! Tamaleria La Dona is well known in the area as they sell tamales to local businesses and restaurants, so good chances are you've eaten their tamales and may not have even known it. I personally think the tamales are super good here and some of the better ones I've had. Unlike some other peoples reviews and pictures, my tamales were stuffed and well filled. No skimpy portions in my batch thankfully. For the tamales here I've tried their red pork, cheese with green pepper, and corn. Honestly I loved them all. They were well filled, moist and a good size but not huge. If I had to rank them from favorite to least (with the third choice still being good) I'd go: 1. Cheese tamale with green pepper 2. Sweet corn tamale 3. Red pork tamale I'm sorry that everyone else hasn't had a good experience here but I wish I lived closer to this spot because if I did, getting tamales here would definitely be on my regular rotation. read more

Just sampled their tamales because I'm on the hunt for some good tamales. I didn't like them. Pollo- were dry and had vegetables in it Cheese- had big pieces of carrots inside Beef- extremely dry, not one drop of salsa Fresa- was extremely tiny. Like sample size tiny. Elote- not too tasty or soft And about $27 for a dozen. If they were bigger, juicer and had more filling then yes the price would be good but not what for we got. Not worth it. read more

Tamales were decent, BUT Puerco ones had peas Pollo had potatoes And cheese had carrots I've never had them like that or knew they made them like that but once I saw them in there it was game over. Honestly I was disappointed in these tamales. I've lived in South Gate for 5 years now. I finally got around to trying La Dona..The tamales were smaller than usual. They did have meat from end to end but, I was expecting more. I only wanted 4, they sell by the dozen, So she charged me under $10 for my 4 tamales. Honestly, I'll go to my street lady next time. The place is a bit run down and looks like it may be family-owned. I came here after trying them at work, extremely disappointed masa is dense and lacks salt I ordered beef and it looked like dry machaca meat usually there's a mole or sauce nothing in these tamales .nothing about them would made me want to re-order. I also got cheese tamales to get a strip of Oaxaca cheese and a jalapeño also not the best I've had. I would not return or recommend a friend. $50 to the trash. La Dona has the best tamales, consistently. Maybe you get lucky somewhere else and catch them on a good day. But everywhere else struggles with consistency. Sometimes too dry, sometimes too wet and messy, sometimes too much masa, etc. Not La Dona. Both Compton and south gate locations make perfect tamales every day. They are not huge, buy the perfect size. They are never wet and sloppy...... I like to eat a tamale with my hands, and these are perfect. Never dry either. Great flavor. Just tried their red, cheese, and corn tamales and they were all good. I actually prefer their corn one. They do also offer salsa on the side if you ask for some. The place has some parking outside, not too sure if there's an inside lot. They seemed very busy in the back, working on the tamales, so customer service was good for a busy day. Had to pick up some tamales for Thanksgiving Day today because my brother didn't have time. I was told to do so on Thanksgiving Eve and had no idea where to get good tamales since I normally rely on others to get or make. Took to yelp and called this place. Unfortunately, they couldn't take anymore orders for Thanksgiving Day pick up since I had called 30 min before they were closing the night before...the guy on the phone told me I could come by and pick up anything they had for the day but warned me to come early because they would sell out. I got up to be there right as they opened and they were already working making loads of tamales! Got 1 dozen pork and 1 dozen chicken for just under $30 total. Now, I'll be honest, I'm not a HUGE fan of tamales. I only ever really liked my brother in law's grandma's tamales and my boyfriend's mom's tamales. With that being said, I tried one of the chicken tamales and was super impressed! Good meat to masa ratio Masa is moist and not all hard or crumbly Good flavor - not just some bland meat thrown in there I'm really regretting not having picked up some of the corn tamales! Thanks to my tax guy, Mario for sending me out this way as I mentioned my search for tamales de piña. It's a small hole-in-the-wall establishment that's been open for at least a year now. La Dona Tamaleria's second location that specializes in tamales but also offers menudo & birria. I came here in search for tamales de piña as I've never had them before. Thanks to fellow yelpers, Carlos G & Mike S for peaking my interest. FYI, they only sell pineapple & strawberry tamales on Fri, Sat, & Sun. I tried their cheese and jalepeno tamale w/their house salsa and it was okay. Imo, not much flavor in the masa w/o the salsa. 3 stars for the tamale, A-Ok. The lady helping me was awesome so I bumped it up another star. There's 15 min parking spots out front and additional private parking @ the side of the building. A few indoor two seater tables are available for dine-in. No outdoor seating. I'm definitely going to have to make another trip out this way on the weekend soon! :) read more

Average. The meat filling was a bit dry. It was given to me piping hot when I ordered it so it's basically ready to eat right out of the store. They also ran out of the milk needed to make the champurrado so couldn't try it out.
