    Doubles with Chickpeas

I came across Tamarind Island's Insta page and it had me drooling so I knew I had to try it. Arriving on a Saturday afternoon, it was bustling and people were in and out. There are a few tables to eat at as well as a couple of seats by the window. I can't say I ever had Trinidadian food before, but the one thing I knew I had to get was the doubles with chickpeas, because that's what first pulled me in. It was fantastic. I'm not sure I ever had chickpeas so flavorful and yummy. The bread was light and pillowy. Also tried a roti with chicken curry. The roti itself was a large portion served along side a plate of chicken curry with some potato. Another wonderful delight. The chicken was tender and the flavors, just so good. I had to stop myself from ordering more, but I am looking forward to going back for more doubles and some other dishes to try.

Service was 5 stars. Ambiance was cool. It's basically a takeout spot with tables. It was clean and appeared well kept. I'll give the food a 3.5. The doubles were tasty. Jerk chicken lacked flavor, and the rice that comes with it was mushy, greasy and bland. The shrimp rice came with mini baby shrimp smothered in sauce--wasn't a fan of taste or presentation. Curry goat was flavorful--no complaints.

Just being honest, I came here because of the Keith Lee Effect. I'm from out of town and a friend and I decided to stop by on the way to the airport. Upon walking in, I was pleasantly surprised at how nice it looked. We joined in the short line and proceeded to order. My friend got the doubles and I got the curry shrimp and roti and we decided to split the tamarind wings. There was a bit of a wait for the roti but I didn't mind because that meant it was fresh. We decided to dine in and took a seat while we waited. The owner was very kind to us. He provided us paper plates to put our scraps on. He also made sure to greet everyone that entered. There was sufficient seating for handful of people if you wanted to dine in. If ever in the area, I'd definitely come back. I want to try more food on the menu. As a fellow Caribbean person, thumbs up!

The shop is very small, and sort of run-down-looking, with only a few chairs and tables if you wanted to eat in. We got the egg ball, phlourie, and chicken doubles as appetizers. The texture on the egg ball was nice, the doubles were soggy but otherwise good and phlouries were so-so. For main course we had Jerk Chicken with Fried Rice and Regular Chicken with Fried Rice. The Jerk Chicken and Fried Rice were definetly the stars of the show, with quite a unique taste and flavor. The regular chicken on the other hand was shockingly bad and tasted like it had been reheated. The staff were quite friendly and let us know we just had to wait a little bit for the food to come in fresh. Honestly, this place can get 4 stars if you arent used to Trinidadian/Guyanese food, but since I am Indian, I am already used to the much more spicier versions of these foods. Overall nice place, but doubt would come again.

Doubles taste so fresh. The tamarind sauce is sweet, and the pepper is actually spicy! The dhal puri is good, I realize I'm not a big fan of split pea, but the texture was amazing. The chicken curry was delicious, I just wish they gave more potato! Overall, great!

Visited because of instagram. Took my family from out of state as well. Their food is decent but wouldn't return because the staff is rude.

Why did I wait so long to come here?!…read more I mean, I know why. It's a bit of a trek from where I live. But I'll happily travel for good food, and Trinciti absolutely justified the journey. As an Indian, I don't say this lightly. I know my Indian food. I was already aware of the historical overlap between Indian and Caribbean cuisines, but Trinidadian food fascinated me. The familiar spices and flavors are there, yet they've evolved into something entirely their own. You can taste the migration story, the adaptation, and the creativity in every bite. A quick practical note because Instagram reels had me misinformed. They do take cards. You don't need cash. Also, parking isn't exactly abundant, and there aren't many nearby places to sit with your takeaway. My advice is to grab a table and eat there. The space itself is small and pretty no-frills, so if you're coming for ambiance, this isn't that kind of place. But if you're coming for flavor, you're in exactly the right place. The setup is simple. You line up, order when it's your turn, and move things along. It's a busy spot, so a little menu reconnaissance goes a long way. The staff are efficient and patient, but they're not mind readers. Asking them whether shrimp or chicken is "better" feels like asking someone whether you should prefer chocolate or vanilla. Both are good. It depends on what you like. We ordered the dhalpuri roti, which is a soft flatbread stuffed with seasoned ground lentils. If you're sharing, ask for it not to be wrapped. Otherwise, it comes rolled up like a wrap. We filled ours with both the curried goat and the oxtail because we weren't there to play it safe. Both were excellent, paired with those comforting, home-style potatoes that soak up all the flavor without overwhelming you with spice. I also couldn't leave without trying the doubles, and we kept it plain. Oh. My. God. Flavor bomb. At its heart, it reminded me of chole bhature's distant cousin. The same comforting chickpea soul, but interpreted through Trinidad's lens with pepper sauces and chutneys that make it unmistakably its own. I honestly think the chutneys are what take it over the top. For the bake and shark though Pay first, take your number, and when they call you up, tell them how you'd like it dressed. Personally, I have a "trust the chef and give me everything" philosophy, so I said yes to it all. The result was a glorious mess of crispy fried shark piled high with pineapple, lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, and an array of vibrant chutneys that I am still thinking about. They do not skimp on the fish. Watching them assemble it from the front row is part of the fun. Before you leave, do not skip the cassava cake. The raisin dessert was a bit too sweet for my taste, but that's entirely personal and worth trying if you have a sweeter tooth than I do. They also sell plenty of snacks and hot sauces, so take a look around before heading out. One final thing I appreciated. They have a restroom and a sink stocked with soap. Trust me, you are going to get messy. That's part of the joy of eating here. If you're the kind of person who side-eyes people for eating with their hands, this might not be your scene. If you're willing to embrace the delicious chaos, Trinciti will reward you generously. I left full, happy, and wondering why I had let distance keep me away for so long. Some places are worth the drive. Trinciti is absolutely one of them.

My first time trying doubles AND my first time in Trincity. The line started all the way outside…read morewhich added to my anticipation. My Trini friend was shocked that I;ve never had doubles and so this day was my lucky day. When you reach, the servers take your order along with as many toppings and additions. They also had bake and shark, bake and saltfish, and other items to choose from such as dhal puri roti, pholourie with tamarind sauce, it was my first time so I didn't go too crazy and wanted to appreciate the essence of the doubles. I would go back again. It is takeout, so don't get too comfy. Make sure you're ready to grab your order and take that first bite after you leave or reach your destination!
