Outdoor Lunch at MJ Bread and Tammie Coe Cakes
    Shirley S.

A stop on a (non-First) Friday afternoon to MJ Bread and Tammie Coe Cakes left me very satisfied! Half the fun of visiting this shop is examining all the pretty cakes on display. While there were a few, there were fewer than I'd hoped for. I'd like to think they were so good they sold out before I arrived at 12 noon. And, apparently timing is everything. I ordered a chicken salad sandwich on a croissant (pictured) and within minutes was told they were out of croissants. I was bummed. Low and behold, the woman at the counter quickly learned my sandwich had already been made and announced it was my "lucky day", taking the last of the croissants; tall with its multi-layers. The chicken salad filling was good, though nothing to write home about. Temptation got the best of me, as I suspect it does others. I kept control settling for the mini portion of the chocolate cupcake (pictured). It was truly one of the best cakes I've tasted in a long time, though the orange (it's Halloween season) butter cream frosting was piled a little too high for my taste. All in all, my visit was a pleasant one and I had a lovely outdoor lunch. I hope to be back soon for one (or more!) of their grab-n-go sliders.

Love me some Tammie Coe in the morning! My husband & I have the luxury of living within walking distance so we come here at least once a week. They use Intelligentsia coffee which is on another level good! They're really known for their cakes & desserts though. Some mornings I'll get a muffin or slice of pound cake. Always delicious & moist! Every holiday we like to order a pie or bread pudding to bring to Thanksgiving dinner. It's a hit year after year. My one complaint is they can't seem to keep staff. Every couple months they're training a new barista which is fine but this makes for inconsistencies like not always being open on time, or open at all if someone decides not to show. We keep coming back though because the coffee & goodies are never a disappointment!

Small buddle of red velvet goodness, I always take off about half of the frosting!! Still pretty good!

Oh Red Velvet how I love your silky and fluffy self!!! So delightful and tasty!! Tammie Coe's cakes is one of my top favorite, from their Ooey Gooey cup cakes to my all-time favorite red velvet cake slice!! The cake is fully rich and splendid!! Ahhhh It's like heaven in a slice!! The Red velvet is a must try if you go!!

Of course I still love Tammie's cakes and cupcakes and cookies. And her husband's bread is still my local favorite. But I just discovered this week a new reason to love Tammie Coe: the boxed lunches. For around $10 each, I ordered lunches for my fellow faculty members who were having an in-service at the Phoenix Art Museum. There were about 10 different sandwiches to choose from, and about 4 salads, and they all came with a drink, chips, and giant cookie. Everyone raved, and many asked me from where I had gotten lunch. The salads were huge and the sandwiches were hearty and very satisfying. Everything was clearly labeled, and packed into individual brown bags for each person. I could make special requests like "no nuts in the cookie" and the woman in charge, Sia, was a pleasure to work with. I felt that I got a great value for my group, and will absolutely use Tammie Coe again for my smaller catering needs.

Having just moved around the corner, I was very excited to have a locally owned coffee place to replace my former Starbucks self. As we all could have guessed, I am in love. The breakfast sandwiches are amazing- I get mine with American cheese, scrambled eggs and avocado (in lieu of meat) on a buttermilk roll. Delicious! I've had a variety of iced coffee treats but my favorite is the Salted Butter Carmel iced coffee. I have also bought many, many cupcakes here- the red velvet is for sure the best. I find myself looking for occasions that I can bring TC cupcakes to, which is a bit ridiculous. Tammie Coe is a wonderfully indulgent place with awesome customer service and tasty morsels. Bonus: They are super dog-friendly.

OH MAN! I attended a shower this past Saturday that had a Tammie Coe cake there! It was unbelievable! The cake was a sponge cake, it had some kind of custard filling that may have been made by angels with layers of fresh diced strawberries. So heavenly!

Perhaps my expectations were too high. Tammie Coe's reputation for whipping up delicious artfully crafted cakes is well known, and I had hoped to experience that and more when making my first visit to their flagship location in the Roosevelt district. While the cakes don't disappoint, the location itself could be so much more. The place is pretty tiny and tucked into the bottom floor of a condo complex just a block west of 7th St. The setup inside is cute with the desserts laid out for display right as you walk in the door. There's also a refrigerator with drinks and some pre-made salads on the side. Behind the counter some of the MJ Bread products are prominently displayed along with their chalkboard menu of pastries and other items. I had heard they now serve breakfast and lunch sandwiches so I thought that would pair perfectly with some of their pastries. So you can imagine my shock when the gal behind the counter said "we have no sandwiches at all today". Um, what? She apologized profusely, but really couldn't give me an explanation as to why. I've read some reviews that they sometimes run out of items towards the end of the day, but right at Noon? On a Saturday? C'mon now. Disappointing. So i decided to just stick to the sweet stuff. The selection in their display case was fairly limited but I asked for suggestions and the gal suggested their Ooey Gooey Cupcake, Red Velvet Cupcake, and Righteous Brownie. Each were just over $3 (a little spendy, though each of them are sizable & dense). The righteous brownie, as advertised was super chocolately, moist, and delicious. The red velvet cake and ooey gooey cakes were amazing (the amount of frosting on top of both was borderline obscene). Tammie Coe's creations on the dessert front definitely live up to her reputation. I'll definitely come back at some point, but there's plenty that can be improved upon. For one, if you advertise a lunch menu of numerous sandwich creations (using their famous MJ Bread), don't suddenly run out at lunch. Second, how's about a wider selection of treats in the display case? I get there's only so much space, but with all the foot traffic this area gets, it'd be great to sample some more great creations. And lastly, might want to put umbrellas for shade around the tables outside. I like the corner cafe feel they're going for, but as it gets warmer, umbrellas would be a nice addition. C'mon Tammie, I know you can do better. What I was able to get my hands on was awesome. I sincerely hope your flagship will have more to offer next time.

I used to work for Intelligentsia Coffee Shop part time when I lived in Chicago, and of course they have the best coffee in the world. Sometimes I will order it from their website, but that can end up costing like 30 bucks or more per bag! Ya know ... It is a major treat; maybe once or twice a year. Welp, Yelp ... I don't have to worry about that anymore. This place sells Intelligentsia by the cup or by the bag! WOW! SCORE! It is right on Roosevelt Row directly across from the 5th Street strip. I was simply unable to leave the shop without trying a pastry (you'll see what I mean). The blackberry bran muffin was *absolute heaven*. There goes the diet! (Thankfully they only had one left ... I hope they hide them tomorrow.) Also wanted to mention that the gal working behind the counter was super bubbly and friendly even though she had been there since sunrise. Chatting with her while waiting on my coffee to brew was kinda the icing on the cake ... hehe. Thank you Tammy Coe Cakes - you have a new fan in the neighborhood.

    Stale bread
    Brad W.

Every other Focaccia bread I have purchased, you can just break a piece off and enjoy right out of the bag, but this herb focaccia ($2.50) at Tammie wasn't like that. It was semi-stale, so it needed a trip to the toaster oven. It still wasn't good then, so either the giant stack of bread that was sitting in the store shelves was baked a day or two ago or their bread just stinks. It was probably the former. Somebody also needs to make a $2 cupcake. Paying $3.50 for a tiny cupcake is a bit much.

If you're a fan of sweets, you know about Tammie Coe. As a pastry chef myself, I'm always up for trying sweet spots. I've had Tammie Coe cupcakes from Whole Foods but this was my first time actually going to the store. I went in the morning and the case had very little to offer. Only 3 flavors actually. I grabbed the red velvet and coconut and enjoyed it sitting outside. Their red velvet was definitely better than coconut. The cake is moist and frosting is sweet without being overly so. The coconut was okay but lacked the coconut punch I was looking for. My only gripe was the fact that they keep the cupcakes in cooler so it was ice cold! It was like they just took it out of the freezer 5 minutes ago. Well, and the fact that there were only 3 flavors available.

There is a nice variety of sweet treats, and the service provided by the team inside the truck was stellar. One of our student organizations was hosting The Scookie Bar, and after walking around their event, you could score a ticket for a complimentary Scookie. As we pre-ordered so many as incentives for our students, I thought I'd give it a try. Unfortunately, something wasn't set up properly so we didn't have the cookies themselves, but we did have sundaes. We had six options to decide between. I went with The Standard consisting of vanilla ice cream, chocolate chips, and chocolate sauce, and on a normal day, there would have bene a chocolate chip cookie, too. The other five options included the Chocolate Lover, The Celebration, The Signature, Reese's Lover, and The VNA. While I enjoyed the sundae, I'm sure it would have been even better with the cookie included. The Scookie Bar is "where the scoop met the cookie" and serves freshly baked, warm deep-dish skillet cookies also known as scookies. They have a location at The Churchill in Downtown Phoenix, though I would assume I would more regularly see them when their food truck stops by ASU. Their Churchill location is closed on Monday but open Tuesday through Friday from 5-10 PM and Saturday and Sunday from Noon to 10 PM. If you want to order catering, it includes 2 hours of service and a 100 scookie minimum. They can provide a Build Your Own Menu where guests can choose the cookie, ice cream, and toppings, or they can choose from the Signature Scookie Menu which is what ASU did. They have been operating since 2016 in Phoenix. Now that I realize that I was missing the chocolate chip cookie, I need to try it again with that included! I definitely recommend this sweet treat to others.

I can't speak on the customer service as we never left our table and our waited just walked over and got what we needed. We were pretty stuffed from our massive meal, but we decided on sharing a cup of gelato just to satisfy our sweet tooth. I peeked inside as our table was right at a little walkway from the restaurant to the bakery. Gelato is just one of many things they serve here. They also have all your typical Italian desserts. Cakes like tiramisu, pastries like Italian flag cookies, cookies like Italian wedding cookies, cannolis of different varieties, and of course gelato. What was suggested to us if we wanted gelato was the hazelnut flavor. I was expecting a little cup for the 6 of us just to get a taste, but what he brought over was a massive serving. I don't know how many scoops it was or even how much we even paid, but we all got plenty with some even left behind. Now this gelato was life changing. Probably the best I've had in the states. I know it's gotta be way better in Italy, but I'll take what I can when I can. Think of a Ferrero Rocher but in gelato form. It was delicious and I couldn't get enough of it. It wasn't overly sweet and it had a little crunch with bits of chocolate and hazelnuts. My sweet tooth was extremely satisfied after having dessert here. I have literally been thinking about that gelato since I left Phoenix. Luckily this company has locations in Texas so I will definitely be seeking out this gelato soon.

While I was still in NYC with my family on XMas eve eve, it hit me... I need to bring something besides wine everytime I go to their home. Nor a Southern dish. I wanted something unapologetically New Yaek. And what's more New Yawk than a box of classic Italian cookies? After asking a few Yelp friends where to find the best Italian cookies in Phoenix, The Sicilian Baker kept coming up. I called them last minute on Christmas Eve eve, having never been there before, totally sight unseen. First of all, their voicemail is hilarious. Truly. If you do nothing else, call just to hear it. It will instantly make you want to order something. Once I reached a real person, I explained my situation, that I wouldn't be able to come in beforehand, I needed a beautiful cookie tray for about 14-16 people, and I had a few must have preferences. Without hesitation, they said, "We got you." I was assured it would be ready when I landed on Xmas eve. Sure enough, after my partner picked me up from the airport, we headed straight to The Sicilian Baker. Parking right out front, a huge plus. As soon as you pull in, you're greeted with Frank Sinatra playing, not just inside, but even in the parking lot. It sets the tone immediately. We walked in, gave my name, and within minutes a lovely young person brought out my tray. Ten minutes later, we were on our way. Easy. Efficient. Warm service that made me actually grab a small box of cookies to drop my besties home on the way outta there. I didn't even realize at first that there's a sit down restaurant next door where you can relax and enjoy something. Great to know for next time ;) . Now, let's talk about the cookies. Yes, they are on the pricier side, but every single dollar was worth it. The tray was robust. Classic Italian pastries across the board like lobster tails, tri-colored almond cakes, cannolis, and all the favorites you hope for when you're trying to impress a room full of potential inlaws. And impress it did. The moment I walked in with that tray, it was a hit. People were already claiming which pastries they wanted, plotting what they'd take home, and hovering before dinner was even finished. There was more than enough for 16 people, grand is the only word for it, which is my style 1,000%. To this day, they're still talking about those cookies which makes me phenomenally proud (and humbled). I say this in all my reviews, "I hate almost everything. I'm discerning. I'm critical. And when something truly represents what I stand for - quality, authenticity, and heart, I will shout it from the rooftops". The Sicilian Baker delivered New York level excellence in Phoenix! Do not walk, runswiftly to this place if you need a gift, a show stopping dessert, or simply want to treat yourself. I cannot wait to go back. Highly, highly recommended.

Leave it outside the fridge for an hour and watch that cheesecake melt on your tongue crystals (if you have the patience for that) Their rotating monthly flavors keeps things interesting, and you're not just stuck with the same lineup every time. Out of what I tried, the banana pudding one was easily a standout--super nostalgic, creamy, and just done right without being overly sweet. The coconut one was also up there, more subtle but still really clean and flavorful. Love me some coconut! They also have a punch card system--buy 9 slices, get the 10th free--which is a nice touch. It lowkey turns into a mission because once you've tried one flavor, you kinda want to work your way through all of them anyway. Now...the downside. The customer service just isn't great. It's not aggressive or anything, just noticeably lacking. There's not much warmth or engagement--it feels pretty transactional. For a place that clearly puts effort into their product, you'd expect at least a baseline level of hospitality, and it's just not really there. The owners pocketed all the money raised, even demanded additional funds from bands merchandise sales. Absolute disgrace to the community. They put on the face of someone helping the community when in reality they are greedy conniving individuals taking advantage of the youths desire to perform and display their creative music with one another. Phenomenal crepes, horchata and more. This place is like a hidden little secret. They have many different delicious crepe options that are made when you order them so they are always fresh, hot and tasty. There are so many freshly made drinks to choose from Horchatas, Shakes, Lemonades in a variety of flavors that come in Mason jars you can take home. They offer catering, make cakes for you special events, host special events for the local youth. They open their doors and allow the local youth community to put on small music shows to show their support of their hard work and support their passion for their love of music. They offer painting classes and even cake decorating classes. This truly is a small hidden gem that shouldn't get passed by. If you are ever in the area stop by for a bit to eat or to enjoy a delicious drink.
