The friendly worker explained the options to us and let us sample a few. They give you two scoops of rice and two different poke flavors. We got sunrise/spicy and shoyu/garlic. The sunrise was our favorite. Total was about $30 for two bowls that were good servings. There's no where to sit, so plan to take it to go to eat at the beach or your hotel. read more

We were staying nearby at the Courtyard Marriott and evidently this is a Mormon controlled town so there was no alcohol at the hotel or the neighboring shopping area. So I found Tamura's 4 minutes from the hotel and it was quite interesting. They def have tons of liquor, wine and beer as well as groceries. Not fancy at all, made me feel like I took a Time Machine to the 1950's. Not a negative, just interesting. I also needed vinegar for my son's finger that got stung by a sea urchin and they had that, so mission accomplished! read more

Well, the Foodland a town over did not have alcohol since it was by a Mormon temple. One of the Foodland employees whispered that I should go here to get my drinks which is what I did. They have an impressive alcohol section and I left happy. Make sure the price rings up the sale price, ours did not and I had to go back. read more

2.5 stars. I walked in to check this market out as I am always fascinated by grocery markets in Oahu, HI. Just to see what they have, especially if they have poke. Fantastic stop for some poke! We love their so we xial and the ahi sunrise. They Kimchi tako is really a surprise I've never tried before. I love the texture and flavors! I also really enjoyed their garlic edemame (soy beans). Omg I don't know why we don't season or flavor our edemame back home but I'm going to be doing this from now on! This has always been one of my favorite places to shop/eat when I'm on the island and one of the things I liked best was the poke bowls. Today I was greeted by a sign saying they would no longer be making them and everything was ala carte. My first full day on the island encompassed a substantial amount of the North Shore. As the day winded down, there was one sightseeing destination for most of the group and a nearby food one that I especially wanted to try again. Due to substantial roadwork being done along the Kam Highway, it was quite a drive working our way to Laie Point before landing here on our way home. Needing a pitstop at the CVS, our group did some small shopping while I moped over the sad news that Papa Ole's closes early Tuesdays (arrived around 4 pm, they closed at 3 pm). My friend mentioned that Tamura's sold some pretty legit poke so, while waiting for my friends to shop at CVS, I wandered in and saw their wide assortment of poke offerings. While waiting for my friends to join me in shopping, I learned that no one else had a curious appetite so I indulged by ordering two varieties in a small container to try. I enjoyed it and would liken it to a wet beef jerky but with a nice tenderness to it. It was not crazy spicy as the heat mainly came from the jalapeno slices. My other choice was one of the ahi specials, I believe either spicy or Hawaiian flavored. When I shared this one, it disappeared before I even started my car. Most of the assorted ahi specials were pretty much sold out or low in supply since it was towards the end of the day. Nice that they label them "previously frozen"; transparency is good. I likely wouldn't make a special trip out here since it is a good one hour drive from Waikiki but, if in the neighborhood, do stop in and see if one or more of their poke selection piques your interest. read more

Definition of a "mixed bag" for me. Positives: WAAAAY better beer selection than every other grocery store or gas station we went to while in Oahu. Why is Lanikai Brewing so hard to find outside of the brewery? It's way better than the mediocre Kona Brewing/Maui Brewing that makes up 99% of the 'local' beer sections on Oahu. Locally owned and operated. (not a chain) Negatives: No public bathrooms. In fact, there are no public bathrooms in this whole plaza. I guess you want homeless people to defecate in the streets? This sort of aggressive "no public restroom" stuff is found in many places around Hawaii and serves to disproportionately punish the most unfortunate people in our society. Shame on you. Neutral: It is VERY COLD in here. It feels like a walk-in cooler. Ambiance is like a warehouse, the floor is industrial, the ceilings are high, the lighting is also industrial. read more

I found the prices here crazy even with the high prices in the islands, Ani sweetbread was on sale for over $ 7.00 And I think the regular price was something like 12. I grabbed a couple of things that we needed and proceeded to check out. I put my items on the belt and said hello to the cashier and got no response. $14.65 with taxes and tip. I really wanted to like Tamura's-- I've heard it's up there with Foodland for poke. But after being spoiled with the great quality fresh ahi at foodland, I cannot go back to pre-frozen. The texture of ahi did not resemble fish at all. The hamachi was better but had a sign that it was treated with carbon monoxide to preserve the color. Perhaps this is something less places are forthright about but I trust my stomach and my stomach told me not to finish this poke. TLDR - stick to foodland fresh poke! read more

Stood in line and waited for service at the poke counter, and began ordering, when I was called forward. The woman asked what I wanted, and began making my order; reaching into the cooler, as she spooned out each different poke. As the older woman spoke to me, I noticed she was not wearing her mask properly. Who knows how long, or for how many days, this employee has worked around poke... which we eat raw, wearing her mask improperly! When I told the cashier to cancel my order, and told her the reason, the employee shouted, "because I cannot breathe," as I exited the store. Please make sure the employees you see, are properly utilizing their PPE. If not, it's not only risking your health, but the community they serve. read more

We stopped by here on the first day of our weekend staycation at the Courtyard. Needed to get some alcohol and snacks to last the next few days. This place is pretty amazing. It looks like a small store from the outside, and honestly looks pretty grungy on the inside. But we were very impressed by the selection. My wife bought a couple big variety pack bags of Clover chips which we hadn't seen before. She thought they were so cool she got one to mail to her friend in Seattle. There were also a few other Japanese/Filipino snacks that we usually only see at specialty stores but they were right here. Lastly, they had the necessities we went there for including my bottle of Tanqueray and Diet Tonic Soda. We bought a good amount of stuff at a very reasonable price. I am an elderly Kama'aina having lived on Oahu since 1970. I shopped at the Wahiawa store for decades but now live near the Hau'ula store. (I now must pick up my prescriptions at Longs since sadly the Foodland Pharmacy has shut down.) I completed my grocery shopping since I was in the area. I noticed their Help Wanted sign as I entered the store. As I was leaving I put my two reusable shopping bags into my own small cart as I don't own a car and travel by bus. As I was leaving, the cashier ordered me to return the Tamura's shopping cart to the outside. Trying to exit the store trying to push two carts out was extremely difficult for me. I was a bit taken back by her lack of customer service. Plus the workers don't bother to bag your groceries. It will do in a pinch but the store is like shopping in a warehouse. No frills, no customer service. The only nice part about my experience today was a stockman who looked to see if more CPK pizzas were available as the were out of stock and it was a sale item. read more

A local mom and pop type convenience store chain on Oahu that's got one item locals love- Poke. Unfortunately on our North Shore day, the ahi was previously frozen, but it was still a nice snack and compliment to the Giovanni Shrimp we continued down the road to eat. I especially love the pickled garlic from Tamura's, and their spicy crab poke (real king crab). They have 3 or 4 locations on Oahu, and it was my first time to this location. Um...I'm begining to shave the carrots I just bought and I just realized it's old because its bending easily??? U know when it's in your fridge for 2 weeks or more. Then I check the chicken broth cans just incase and it's expired by 1 month. For canned goods to be expired means it's really old because they have a long shelf life. WTH!!! I usually go to Foodland only but didnt want to drive far to get chicken broth, carrots, onions, and celery. Oh and I will never buy meat from here it looks like you will catch something. Its got plenty of parking, plenty of friendly cashiers and sells alcohol on a Sunday!! Score!!! Lots of vino too. I found they sell Maui Splash! I drink that on the mainland! Double score!! LOL...silly I know!! Whatever your grocery store list looks like you'll find it here. If you don't see it right away, ASK SOMEONE...they'll lead you right to it! They sell Ted's Bakery pies, oh yeah! The Chocolate Haupia Cream is pure taste bud heaven! Lots of different Kona coffees to choose and prices are very good! Stock up before you go home!! All the produce looked fresh and was local as much as possible. We bought ground beef for burgers and some steak. Both meats were fresh and lean. Good quality meat, with prices I liked, the hubby says! They also have towels, snorkel gear, boogie boards and such in case you forgot yours. Never mind the interior of the store...keep your eyes on the isles. They are remodeling the roof I believe and so there are buckets here and there along the isles for those sporadic Hawaii showers! read more

Before she rang us up she answered her personal cell phone and was having a conversation with someone about a dog having to use the bathroom and someone minding their own business. After I left and jumped in the truck I opened the pickle mango and it smelt like fish. I took a bite and it taste like fish. So horrible. We got up early for an event at Kuolua Ranch & had the wrong day. Instead of a wasted day we decided to venture North to eat. Nothing was open till 10:30am. We decided to check out Tamura's Poke and wine selection. It was 9:20am and the Poke bar didn't open till 9:30am. So went to check out the store and it was like walking into a time warp to 1970 somewhere in Kansas! I'm so used to the Kailua and Kaneohe stores and to my surprise, I saw no wine selection or prosecco ( not that I needed any at 9am in the morning ! Lol) it was more country market store Molokai like, nothing wrong with that. Just DIFFERENT from their other stores. I did find some Filipino items and surprised that the bacon and egg prices were cheaper than town. But their Poke station was worth the wait! If you love Tamura's in Kaimuki as much as I do, you'll most likely be taken aback by the overall sketchiness of this store. It's one of those weird feelings that's hard to describe, like standing in line at a 7-11 where everyone except you is buying a forty and a pack of cigarettes. Or when you're walking to your car in an empty parking lot and frantically dig to find your keys in your giant bag. A feeling of unease and queasiness comes over you and that's essentially your body's way of saying "Hey dude, you don't belong here." And then the vampires come grab you out of nowhere and drag you away to your doom. Bwahahahahaha... But despite my tendencies to flashback to scenes from "The Lost Boys," as anyone who's driven to the North Shore knows, there are few options and when you've got a six year old daughter who has to pee and a boyfriend who wants to buy beer, well sketchiness be damned, Tamura's it is! It was a quick trip to grab snacks and use "the facilities," but one thing Tamura's does right at both stores is garlic tamari. If garlic is a God in your country this is a MUST TRY. It's basically whole cloves of garlic soaked in a shoyu sauce and it's delicious! We were however disappointed that they don't have a fresh poke counter here like at the Kaimuki store. But at least they still sell it in containers and it's still good! read more
