Haleʻiwa is such a quaint little town, and Whalers General Store fits right into it. The blue storefront, the old-fashioned sign, the whole place has this slightly old-world charm that made me want to wander in and browse. There is a little bit of everything inside, although things are definitely on the expensive side. I picked up a few turtle souvenirs because after a week of chasing honu around Oahu I needed to take some home with me. I also found a cute pair of earrings for N. Then their internet went down at checkout and my payment wouldn't go through. N thankfully had cash So technically, N paid for the earrings I bought her as a gift. I'm still claiming credit for choosing them. A fun little stop while wandering around Haleʻiwa, even if your wallet may notice. read more

I usually stop by here for some souvenirs after spending a day at North Shore. On this occasion, I went in but didn't see anything that caught my eye. Then my 7 year old son needed the restroom so I asked the cashier for the code in the plazas shared facilities with several other shops. She told me I had to be a "paying patron" so I grabbed a bag of toffee macadamia nuts to be a paying customer. Instead of ringing me up, she proceeded to walk away from the cashier and said I would have to wait for her to come back. I asked her politely if I could have the code since I've already been a paying customer in their plaza, we had shaved ice next door, but instead of just giving the code she told me to go back to Matsumoto to ask for the code! I couldn't believe her response! I left the store and just waited for someone to exit the bathroom. I will never shop at this store again! This is the least aloha spirited experience I have ever had while visiting Hawaii. read more

My girlfriend and I hadn't had a drink all day. When we went to Whaler's General Store, we decided to grab a few bottles. We got here on Monday, March 4th around 3:30pm. We just bought two small Jameson Irish Whiskey bottles at $3.99 each. Apparently they were on sale, so originally priced at $5.99 each. I believe we also got a can of some kind girly sparkling wine, but I can't recall what it was. The cashier was friendly and we were out of here relatively fast. After indulging in some tasty shaved ice we browsed around this general store. If you're looking for a cute or touristy gift this is your place. They have food, clothing, and trinkets just to name a few items. If you like Snoopy merchandise they had a lot of adorable items for sale. Service was very friendly and helpful. Oh and for all you North Shore whalers that go to Whaler's General Store, just a note. I didn't see too many harpoons or bottles for storing ambergris here, but I'm sure they were in the next aisle over from where I was shopping. My son took me to an area called the North Shore to shop for souvenirs and this was probably the third store I went into. On the first visit in, i didn't buy anything but ultimately ended up back in the store after all the other shops and bought the biggest bulk of my souvenirs from this location. Its a very handy store, it has souvenirs but also has fresh fruit and cold drinks. The prices were reasonable, compared to some of the other shops. i found a hat for $13 and some of the other shops were selling the upwards of $30. I also found a small container of Sea Salts of Hawaii "Maui Onion" flavor. I enjoy cooking and its always a treat to find seasoning blends that are flavorful and produced in the area where you purchase them. A 3.5 oz container was $7 and looking at it though the see through top, I can tell its going to be a flavorful seasoning blend on many types of food They have some really cute products. A very touristy convenience store in Haleiwa next to Matsumoto Shave Ice. Lots and lots of Hawaii knick knacks, with some snacks and beverages. My friend was thirsty so we stopped by and was baffled at the $4 price tag for a bottle of green tea. Good shop if you're a tourist looking for cute Hawaii souvenirs but as a local I can't justify paying such high prices for something you could get for $2 at Longs. read more

They did a great job on the construction of Whalers and the rest of the new shops in the Courtyard by Matsumoto's. The name and location screams authentic, genuine Hawaii but the products reflect more of an ABC store. There is some fresh fruit, veggies and other grocery items but it's not exactly as historic as the name would lead you to believe based on the reputation Whaler's Village has on Kauai. In addition to food they have beach stuff, camping gear and other random items you might find at a general store. It should do really well and they offer some convenience store items that fill a need from what it looked like. If you're walking the town, shopping at all the different places through Haleiwa then this store will be a great spot to grab some snacks, drinks and even lunch. read more

Perfectly located next to Mahina, T&C, and Matsumoto's in Haleiwa, Whaler's General Store has snacks, drinks, and all of the souvenirs you didn't know you needed. The ladies that work in here are very friendly and helpful, really exuding the aloha spirit. If I hadn't just ordered a shaved ice from Matsumoto's I would have had several of the Bubbies (mochi ice cream) that they have here in their freezer window. While walking around I was able to find a cute tunic tank for working out in here that was reasonably priced. When the girl up front saw that I was debating whether or not to get it she let me know she own the top in a couple of colors and loves it. I have since worn it for working out and am so glad I found it here! read more

I really enjoyed this general store! I came in from the heat to get some cold snacks and a sandwich for the kids. I would rate this store five stars, if the general foods were not so expensive. The inflation is real! But not in the back where the fresh deli foods are. Those prices were seriously reasonable! We got a boars head sub with fresh meat, mustard and Swiss cheese. It was $6 and HUgE. It filled both of my hungry kids and myself. What was even better, were the mochi samples! I must have had them all ! The deli staff were super friendly to us, and I can understand if their days get frustrating- it's a zoo outside in that plaza. When we checked out, we got to try some cake too. Seriously, the amount of free samples I received from here were enough to fill a normal person . I recommend giving this place a chance. This review is solely based on their poke bowls because it is the only thing I came here for. At first when you pass by this quaint store you see lots of local fruits on display. Such a colorful sight! If you venture further back you'll find a small display case of about 5 different poke varieties. You have your basic shoyu, oyster sauce, spicy, Hawaiian and my favorite the creamy wasabi. You have a hint of wasabi that doesn't clean out your nose like when you accidentally eat a chunk. I heard the spicy is really, spicy. Ask for a sample! Pack that on top of rice and you have the perfect meal! My coworkers and I drove from Sunset to grab about 6 bowls for lunch. For $7.99 a bowl you can't go wrong! The workers who were working were very polite and great to talk to. Even when we took a bit of time to decide which poke to get. Locals! During my latest visit to Honolulu, I had a great time. That is UNTIL I visited this store in attempt to purchase some postcards to send to my friends. After I selected my post cards I presented them to the cashier lady, she took the cards and scanned them and informed me the price. As I was taking out my credit card I noticed that she has casually placed my postcards on the counter with no intention to wrap them. While slightly confused, I figured she assumed I was simply going to mail them right after hence didn't bother to bag them. I quietly grab them and was about to leave the store. This is the moment that I realized that the counter was wet from previous customers and she has placed my postcards in a pile of water. I calmly told her that I would like to replace these postcards with new ones since I don't think they are in fair condition and it wasn't my fault at all. She, however, had the audacity to told me that it was ME who misplaced these postcards and I should be responsible for them. I was furious, I cannot believe that I would be hold responsible for such egregious error on her part and have her accuse me that it was all my fault. So I like to announce to the world that this cashier SHARACE deserves to be employee of the month and because of her, my trip to Hawaii will forever to dampened by this unfortunate incident. I sincerely believe that her behavior does not reflect true Hawaiians but it's disheartening how many of you guys who left reviews here all experience something similar. If you are the owner of this store, I urge you to strongly consider replacing her to someone who can at least spell customer service not someone who takes no responsibility and shows a terrible attitude at work. read more

While the food stuffs here seem somewhat limited, the selection of souvenir-type-gifts and do-dads is better than any of the more touristy places in the area. It was nice to see something different than the over-priced and over-represented tchotchkes that are more typical. And everything was fairly reasonable - got to bring home a cute beachy tote bag, some 'artisnal' salt, coasters, a wooden bowl and snacks for less than the cost of a tee-shirt! They run whatever hours they want for the deli. Twice in a one week period we drove over 30 min to come get the mochi and the first time they were defrosting the freezer at 4 pm when they close at 8 pm. The 2nd time we got there at 3 pm and they had them covered and said an employee had left early but there were 2 there running the register but no one could help us get mochi. The Mgr Mike was very friendly offering knowledge of local products & let us try homemade Banana bread made from local apple bananas . The Deli has assorted sandwiches & salads. They have a Poke case & let us sample them all. They have Mochi Ice cream with tons of flavors. Nella went out of her way to make us feel like family. The store was very clean & neat & just the perfect amount of salesmanship. Kylie was re stocking the North Shore sweatshirts I was thinking of purchasing & she answered all my questions & had me try one on. Sold after i asked for a mirror & she took a picture with my phone. The Fruit stand is stocked with all Local fruits in season & plenty of gift items. We loved that we could browse around try all types of local food & not feel pressured to buy. This was our first trip to Hawaii and we decided to vist the Hale'iwa Store Lots on June 26, 2015--my mother went off on her own to Whalers General Store and purchased 6 Mauna Loa chocolate boxes at $3.49 each totaling $20.94 according to the sales rep. She did not give my mother a receipt of purchase. My mother handed the sales rep $100 bill, in which her change should have been $79.06, however, she only gave my mother $42-43 in change. When my mother noticed the discrepancy, she returned to find the sales rep and explain, yet the girl argued that she gave her the correct change. I did not find out about this until we got back to California and my mother told me what happened because she didn't want it to ruin our trip and experience. First off, my mother is in her 60s, doesn't speak English well and trusted the sales rep's "friendiless." Secondly, if I were there, I would ask why no receipt given at an established store? My mother does not remember her name, but remembers her appearance discription and if a photo is available will be able to pinpoint the rep. Here is her discription of sales rep: Female, Asian, long dark brown hair believed to be tied in a low pony tail that day, minimal side bangs, round shaped face, in her 20s, average build, 5'2-5'4, light tan, very light to no makeup, and smooth skin. The reason I feel compelled to write this is because my mother is upset and this is what she walked away with in her memory of our family vacation and that the store should be aware of this rep and all reps for the experience of future customers and visitors. I do not appreciate the fact that the sales rep took advantage of my mother's kindness and trust. Had I known about it that same day, I would have dealt with the situation myself. This review is ONLY for the mochi ice cream, which it should be said, is a m a z i n g. Well, after a long hot day on the beach and tramping through the heights of Pupukea, a little bit of sweet is quite nice. Guava in pink was like perfumed cream, and the passionfruit passionate and fruity. We also had the espresso chocolate - powerful little thing. There's a lot less sugar water than the Matsumoto's but if you have to do the Matsumoto's, you just do. The mochi ice cream for me is not the alternate on the North Shore. read more
