HORRIBLE! And even that is not enough to explain this shop. Yes, horrible shop to work with. Jim Tanner is the epitome of rude. I spent, $3,555.54 on June 4, 2019 to have my transmission rebuilt after they had it for almost a month with no updates on status. It still shifts hard. I took into the Dealer and they said it was a shoddy job. Do not go there! Ever. You will regret their "free" assessment that at a minimum will end up costing you $600 because they take it apart for free but then charge you $600 minimum to put it back together. I spoke with Jim this morning about diagnosing my 2013 Yukon XL transmission. He was friendly and said the gears were slipping from 3rd to 5-6th. He was kind and I felt he offered good advise based on his experience. I decided to have them fix the transmission. He said they would remove it and send it to their factory in Salt Lake for the diagnosis. He will call me tomorrow (Friday, July 6th) with a quote. Then I read all the negative reviews about Tanner Transmissions ( and a few positive) and the President responding with apologies over and over. Tanner Transmissions in Draper fixed the transmission in my car and when I brought it back for its 15 day check up, they noticed a separate problem with a leak from some old oil tubing under my car. The quickly replaced the tubing, fixed the leak and sent me on my way at no charge. Great job guys, Thanks! read more

Their website claims that there is a free transguard check with no obligation. Well it was free, but the employee definitely tried to pressure me into leaving my truck for a minimum of 4 days over and over again so that they could take apart the transmission, identify the problem, and then rebuild it. Taking apart the transmission would be $575 but he had absolutely no idea how much it could possibly cost to rebuild it because it depends on the problem. I told him that I could not leave my truck for 4 days because I need it for work. He just told me how I'm not taking good care of my truck and that it'll cost more for a whole rebuilt transmission that for them to fix mine. When I asked how much it would be to just buy a rebuilt one he looked up my truck's specs and told me that my transmission was a 47RE. Well, it's not. It's a 46RE. I told him that it was the 46RE and he told me how he's a professional blah blah blah. He finally gave me a price of $2170, which is about $500 more than pretty much any other place I've checked with. That price was just for the transmission not including labor or the flush. That would be roughly $3300. Also WAY higher than everywhere else. So all in all, I had a pretty negative experience and I won't be going back. read more

I'm giving 1 star and that's just because I can not give negative 5 stars. Now onto my little buisness transaction with Tanner Transmission in Draper as a former mechanic of 5 years and service writer of 12 years here is a review . Communication is very very poor when you talk to them they say "we will give you a call " Yea that doesn't happen you have to call them . The 5yr 50k warranty that's an extra charge. Ontop of their outrageous price 575 for a diag they dont tell you itll be 575 to put the trans back in if you dont do the work there. The cost of parts and labor was actually more then a reman transmission but with their fees they have you by the balls. So your basically stuck going to them. Also if you dont fork out the extra several hundred you get a 3mo 3k mile warranty. If I would have known that up front I would have rdered the reman transmission and done the work myself but since I have a bad shoulder I decided to pay to have it done. I had my Jeep there for about 3 weeks for a trans rebuild. I had the top down on it and it was stored outside so it was rained inside of luckily the interior is pretty waterproof aside from the corbeau seats and headunit . I had to detail it when I got it back they could have called and asked me to come put the top up that sounds like the smart thing todo that's what I would have done for my customers . Part of what took so long is Jim said "it wasnt going into 4th gear right so they had to take it apart again. " Ok cool I thought that was a good sign. It worked great for about 2 weeks 800 miles later it was having issues with the 2nd to 3rd upshift. I dropped it off on Tuesday with 35 miles on the trip counter. They drove it 3 miles according to what The trip counter said when I went to check up. When I called they cant find any issues after I told them when it was dropped off you have to drive it for 15-20 minutes before it acts up. Jim said he will try changing the fluid to a synthetic fluid but he would have to research what to put in it. (Hello red flag your a trans shop how do you not know what to put in the trans I told them Redline MT90 is the synthetic fluid it calls for the customer should not be telling the shop what fluid to run ) anyway on Friday he said he will get it done call me back. No call back Friday or Saturday. I went down Monday morning bright and early. Cause a drain and fill should only take 15 minutes. I walk in asked how the jeep is coming along he said I called it's done. Pulled up my phone log and yea no calls. Then he said 375. Excuse me it's under warranty, he replied you dont have the Nissan. Then he said they could find the issue with my trans he brought up the mechanic who said yea it had an odd shift . Well what do you know That's what I brought it in for. So he drove it 3 miles and noticed that but tried to play it off as being normal. And they had it a week . I was told take it for a test drive so I did same issue brought it back let the mechanic drive it he drove it with me. It kept popping out of 3rd gear. So they pulled the trans again. Be warned they will try scooting around doing warranty work. I had to basically go down there and basically wait to ensure they started working on it cause I was waiting. Then I was asked I'd I had the stock shifter cause I have a b&m shifter probably trying to pass the blame on that. Eventhough that shifter was perfectly fine before the rebuild and before it started having issues. My suggestion goto somewhere else like Randy's in tooele or intermountain in slc . read more

As my deceased mother's car had low mileage, it was a practical as well as a sentimental decision to make it serviceable for a commute car. However when an oil change business said the car needed to be seen by a transmission specialist, it came as a total surprise as the car was functioning just fine. When Jim, at Tanner, confirmed that the transmission was headed for trouble, it came to a question if I wanted to pour more money into this project after having body work done plus installing new tires. In weighing my decision, it became a little tougher after reading a couple of negative reviews, stating that the manager was not very customer friendly. My experience has been very positive to date. Jim gave me a price to repair the transmission and stuck to it. Although at first Jim appeared to be "stand-offish", I found him very engaging once I made an effort to get to know him. So far the car is performing just fine. Will post further if there is any change. read more

Tanner Transmission is a scam! While I am not one to usually write bad reviews, I feel it is my responsibility to warn other consumers about the shady tactics this business uses. I brought in my truck to have a transmission issue diagnosed. A couple hours after I had dropped my vehicle off, they called me and told me they couldn't find anything wrong from the outside and in order to diagnose it any further they'd need to do an RDI (remove, dismantle and inspect.) This would cost $575. What they didn't tell me is THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE REINSTALLING YOUR TRANSMISSION even after I decided to not have the repairs done by them. They purposely don't include reinstall when talking to you on the phone so they can claim they never agreed to reinstalling it. While speaking of repairs, they were going to charge me $2800 to rebuild my transmission for a 20 year old Ford Ranger. (A new one cost's $1500) Not only do they purposely deceive you in their "free diagnosis" but they over charge you for service. In the end when I went to pick up my truck, they said they would roll it our front with my transmission in a box in the back. I am not the first one this has happened to. Look them up on the Better Business Bureau and you'll find account after account of their shady business dealings. read more

Tanner Transmission is not competent and is also dishonest. I brought my car to them, and told them what the problem was (Bad Transmission Control Module). They told me that this was not the problem. I spent $3,000 having them fix the actuator on the clutch at their recommendation. Exact same problem when they gave the car back to me. I took it back. They said it was fixed again. Got the car back and it was doing the exact same thing. I asked them again if they checked the transmission control module. They said that they had checked it and that they knew that it was not the problem. I scheduled a time for them to look at it a third time. I decided to take it to a dealer before taking it back to Tanner, who told me that not only was the Transmission Control Module the issue, but that it was under a recall, and would be fixed free of charge. I called Tanner and told them what the dealer had said. Their completely dishonest response was that their next step was to look at the tranmission control module. I demanded a refund for work that did not fix the problem, knowing that the actual problem would be covered for free. They refused and said that the transmission control module must have gone bad while driving it home (70 miles) after they replaced the actuator. These guys are dishonest, and are not qualified to fix your car. I strongly recommend avoiding their services. read more

My boyfriend had his transmission for his GMC truck rebuilt by Tanner Transmissions over 4 years ago and has had no issues or problems with it. So because of my experience as well as my boyfriends, I give Tanner Transmissions a 5 star rating! when I needed my car transmission serviced he recommended that I go there. Jim was professional and got my car back to me as promised since he knew I was on a tight schedule that day. The price was just as he quoted me!. I appreciate the quick service and his professionalism; sometimes I feel intimidated to go in to get my car worked on since I don't know that much about mechanics but Jim was great and trustworthy. Jim will scam you. He will show the price of an overpriced transmission online. Then convince you to do the $180 diagnostic. To do a diagnostic they take your transmission completely apart. Then tell you it's $3500 to fix. For a corolla tranny!! Those things never go bad. He offered me my car back and said he would put the tranny parts in a box for me and I could tow it home. read more

Took my 2008 Ford Edge in for my 2 week/500 mile appointment. I couldn't be happier with the friendly customer service and timely service. We dropped my car off before I went out of town for a week and my spouse was the one who picked it up and worked with Tanner Transmission. There is a complete lack of customer service and organization at this Draper Tanner Transmissions. Jim, the manager, doesn't have a very good memory and has no empathy. He hides behind warranty instead of doing right vs wrong. We took our 2006 Expedition in because there was quite the noise coming from it and we didn't want something catastrophic to occur. They were busy. We made an appointment to bring it back a couple days later. Did Jim remember us? Nope, but he took our keys and said they would look at it. If you take your vehicle there, you better keep calling them because they will NOT call you. A few days later we called and asked what was done. They said there is definitely a sound coming from the rear-end and it would need to be dismantled to find the issue. Very long story made shorter is over two weeks later they rebuilt the whole rear differential inside and out for $2234.66. I got a 3 month or 3,000 mile warranty agreement and even brought it back a few days later to have it verified and sealed so the agreement would stick if something went wrong. We noticed noise out of the vehicle again a month or two later but suspected it was something in the front, not for a second thinking it was the rear-end because it was just rebuilt and solid right? Wrong! I really wasn't happy with how Jim's customer service was extremely sub-par and frankly rude at some points. I chose to take my vehicle to my regular mechanic and another transmission shop. They verified that the noise was the rear-end, there was a leak out of the NEW pinion seal Jim and his team installed and that there were metal flakes in the fluid from the rear-end. I immediately went back to Jim on Monday March 18th and approached him with the information I had, knowing about the lousy 3 month warranty, and hoped that Jim would help me out since it had only been 6 months. By the way, other transmission shops guarantee their work for much longer than 3 months. He said he was busy and for me to bring it back on Wednesday morning. Sounds like an appointment right? Wrong again! We brought it back Wednesday morning, walked in, and he greeted us, after we waited in the empty lobby for a time, like he didn't even recognize us and were new customers. We had to remind him, not only of the kind and color of vehicle, but my name and full situation I was in, AGAIN. What a forgetful old man! He said he would look at the problem and see if he agrees with the other shops I took it to. How long would it take? "I have to fit you in, you just came in." REALLY? I'm pretty sure Jim asking us to come back a couple days later in the morning is considered an appointment! I shouldn't be "fit" in. 2 DAYS LATER we called him back and he hasn't even worked on it! He looked at it and saw a leak, but that was it. You can bend over and see that from the parking lot! He said he would have to remove the rear cover to see what damage there was. Here's the best part. He hides behind his warranty and doesn't know how to choose right from wrong. He says it won't be free but he might work with us. I'm sorry, but we are not about to spend more on top of the $2234.66 we gave them to do the job right THE FIRST TIME and have it be right back where we were 6 months later. I understand it was out of THEIR warranty, but really? They only stand behind their work for 3 months. Jim said the leak probably caused more issues in the rear-end and it would need to be repaired. Ya, the seal THEY installed failed and I have to pay for it, AGAIN!!!! This is very poor customer service and Jim is a terrible representative of a company that Blaine supposedly wants in his own mind, but not what is actually happening in real life. Avoid going to Tanner Transmissions anytime for anything. They will keep your vehicle twice as long as necessary and not call you about progress. They will call you if they want money though. The RIGHT resolution for us would be to have the wrongs made right, to have our rear-end repaired and functioning correctly for more than 6 months for the $2234.66 we paid them to do the first time. Blaine, to make this right we would need to be reimbursed for the work we are having re-done elsewhere. If you want a quality business you need to make yourself known and available to be contacted. If Jim is the top tier for complaints or compliments, your raping people of their money and I, for one, will not stand for it. We are currently having our work done AGAIN at a competing and much better run shop than this dump! read more

I had the transmission replaced in my 04' Honda Odyssey back in August of 2015. Since then, it's been back in their shop THREE times. The first time was 10 months after the transmission was built, I was traveling to Logan for a funeral and the transmission overheated in woods cross. I had to have it towed back to them. they put a larger cooler on the transmission. Then only two months later it started having more issues, so once again, I took it in but I couldn't remember what they did to it. Now fast forward to July 2017. While on our way to Park City, the transmission what downshifting very hard and making a clunking sound. We made it home just fine. Then the next day while my wife was driving home, the jerking was so severe, that she didn't make it home. It's currently parked at the inlaws house. by the time it made it there, the check engine light came on as well as the TCS. Also know that "Jim" has a very dry personality and showed no empathy for all the problems that I have had. Initially when I got the transmission done, I had to wait 20 minutes while he spoke to his realtor about potential rental properties. To me, some empathy towards the situation or a simple "sorry for the inconvenience" would go a long way. Please steer clear of this shop and they can't seem to fix my transmission. read more
