The enchiladas and burritos are always a good choice. The Chile Riano is my favorite. The burgers are fresh cooked hand made with fresh vegetables, and the french fries are just right. Being in potato country, they have to have good fries. You are always greeted with a warm, smile and welcoming atmosphere, small but, a great place to stop.

It is located where the highway takes a hard right turn south to California in an old cement block building painted white with green and red trim--a tip that this is a Mexican-American restaurant. I opened for the American half and ordered the cheeseburger with crinkle-cut french fries. The meal came in the traditional red plastic basket. The large sandwich included pickles, lettuce & tomato. The bun didn't get soggy and overall the burger was very good. The fries were cooked nearly to perfection, golden but with a slight oily taste. The interior of Papa Tany's has tables and booths; on the walls are prints of Marilyn Monroe and other Hollywood legends of the 1950s. Outside are some picnic tables and paved parking.

Tried two other places in downtown Shasta but both were packed and we did not want to wait - glad we did not! La Perla is adjacent to a bar and has an old school vibe. The decor is diner-esque but interesting. They offer self-serve chips, salsa and soft drinks (the latter for a price). Food portions are generous and very tasty, we all loved our food. My partner had a jalapeño margarita which was extraordinary. Cherry on top was our amazing server - she was extremely nice, prompt and accommodating. A pleasure all around. Highly recommended!

We wanted to make reservations for dinner on a Thursday but no one answered the phone. We decided to head over to the restaurant a few minutes before we planned to dine with friends only to discover they weren't open and a hand lettered writing on the door said they were closed Thursdays and Sundays. We did return the next evening, now knowing that they would be open on Friday. The restaurant shares an entryway with a popular bar. It was amusing watching people enter the main door and then turn one way or the other to enter a business, only to realize they want the other door. I saw a few families with little kids start towards the bar and then turn to the restaurant. Groups in motorcycle jackets did the reverse. A signboard at the entrance to the restaurant invites customers to choose a table and then help themselves to chips and salsa. My husband and I split an entrée and it was more then enough for the both of us. Portion sizes are generous. The food was very good. Much better than Casa Ramos or Puerto Vallarta. If you want Mexican food in Mount Shasta, stay away from those chains and go to La Perla for a much better meal at reasonable prices to boot. We enjoyed the background music, with songs from the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Paul Simon, The Proclaimers.
