Came down here for lunch earlier while running errands. Rafelitos is located on W. 91st Ave and King St. between Costco and Target at the old Fire Island bakery location behind the Anchorage Brewery. The dining area has high ceilings surrounded by glass windows. This is great during sunny days, but during winter, when daylight is short, it can be blinding from the west side when the sun goes down. The glare was especially strong when ordering at the counter and even the cooks in the kitchen had a difficult time as the grills face the dining area with the sun right in their faces. The employees were friendly and extremely busy as they were helping customers in the dining area as well as a private party next door. Rather than a physical copy of the menu, there are screens above the front counter displaying the menu selections to place your order. I ordered the Weekend Special of Birria Tacos and Consomme (hand-pressed fried corn tortillas with brisket and back rib meat, cilantro, and onions accompanied with a cup of bone marrow consomme for dipping) and a friend of mine who came along ordered the Carnitas Taco Special at $7.50/crispy or soft taco. We found a table close to the front door and fortunately seats facing away from the afternoon glare. All the tables are long bar-style tables with stools which takes up a lot of space when you're navigating to the counter to place an order. Dining tables for a party of 2-4 would be more ideal in a setting like this. The 15 minute wait was reasonable, given how busy the kitchen was with diners and takeout orders being worked on. The food was delicious. The Birria Tacos were juicy and tender with melted cheese and the Consomme added additional flavor akin to au jus for a French Dip sandwich. My friend enjoyed the Carnitas Tacos. What made this order unique was that the Carnitas included what looked like bacon bits and pork belly in the tacos. That looked amazing. I will have to try that out on the next visit. Some of the standout selections include the Street Corn (topped with mayo, Cotija cheese, tortilla strips and salsa Macha), Pork Belly Tacos (roasted garlic, jalapeno aioli, shaved cabbage, cilantro, and salsa), 1lb. Burritos with choice of meat on a 13-inch(!!!) flour tortilla with cilantro, onions, and two sides of salsa...( We all know how big a 10-in pizza from Moose's Tooth looks like, so you can imagine how big this burrito is at 13-in AND you have an option for extra meat!), and the Chocoflan (chocolate cake topped with flan, whipped cream, and a cherry). It should be noted that this establishment originated in Tijuana and got the inspiration for their recipes working with well-known Mexican chefs throughout the country. read more

Trivia: Ralfy Quepons, according to Rafelitos story on their website, grew up where? Seriously great food. I was not prepared for the shear quality and flavor. I wasn't prepared for the ordering process. It was kind of a mess. Let me explain: I walked in and the first table full of people was REALLY close to the door. Threw me off. I worked my way around them. Then I walked past the kitchen/cooking area toward the thing that made the most sense. The bar area. There was a register, a counter, and a person...looking at me. But no. He told me to order at the other counter. So I walked over and grabbed the paper menu lying on the counter. But it wasn't a menu, it was their produce order from Charlie's produce. So I stood there awkwardly until someone asked to take my order and I asked for the menu, which was above me on a tv screen. And that's the last bad thing. Now I'll know. Made the effort to find this local jewel off of King Street at the end of 91st street. I tell you that because it is worth the time and map challenge to get there and try some great food. We had the Carna Asada tacos (with out sauce for my wife) and the meat was great. I added the sauce later and it really brought it to life. We add a pork belly taco and it was really good with a slight crisp to the bite and nice cabbage and queso crumbles to top it off. However I will say the quesadillas with chicken was the best I have tried in a long time with flavor and texture in a great combination along with being large serving. Rafelitos was the 2nd stop on our impromptu Black Friday, bar crawl. We arrived a few hours before closing. It was my first time visiting the space since Fire Island Bakery AND my beloved Vib Cycle departed. The fence in the parking area seemed petty but, I know how busy the surrounding breweries get, so I get it. To call the interior eye catching, would be an understatement. The cultural murals in this space seem to almost tell a story. The tiles in the bathrooms are also not to be missed. Love the overall decor and vibes, for sure. Rafelitos reminds me of Originale (pay and tip before food + drinks). They had one margarita that was wine based, we got a few of those and enjoyed them. Different, yes, but tasty and satisfactory. Most of the Rafelitos menu is a la carte. Expensive, but I was here for the experience...and to yap. I ordered 3 seafood (salmon, shrimp, halibut) tacos, and their key lime pie. The tacos were fresh, and had great presentation. The key lime pie was fresh out of the oven. All the staff were kind and accommodating. My friend and I yapped till we were the last customers in the building. The staff didn't seem to mind. I can't say that I would go out of my way to come here again (when there are places like Serranos and Las Margaritas), but my first experience definitely went without hiccup. read more

I really enjoyed Rafelitos! The staff were friendly, the tables/floors were clean, and the food was delicious. I had the 3 tacos - chicken, brisket, and carne asada. All were great but the carne asada was amazing! I will get 3 of those next time. The tacos are definitely small but there's a lot of meat on each one. I do wish they gave you more than 12 chips with the order. For the price you're paying, you should at least receive a small basket of chips. Rafelito's in Anchorage has been hyped up quite a bit, and since it's close to home, we decided to give it a try for a more low-key Valentine's celebration with takeout instead of dining out. With all the praise I'd heard, I had high expectations, and for the most part, Rafelito's delivered--especially with one standout taco that completely stole the show. I ordered a mix of tacos to get a good sampling of what they had to offer: carne asada, chicken, al pastor, and the seafood trio. My first mistake was starting with the al pastor because, after that, nothing else even came close. It was unbelievably flavorful, with just the right balance of spice, sweetness, and smokiness. The pork was tender, perfectly seasoned, and had that rich, slightly crispy texture you hope for in a great al pastor taco. Every bite was packed with layers of flavor, and after finishing it, I knew everything else was going to have a tough time competing. The carne asada was solid but didn't quite blow me away the same way. It had a nice char and a decent seasoning, but compared to the explosion of flavor from the al pastor, it felt a little underwhelming. The chicken was well-cooked and juicy, but again, it didn't have that wow factor. The seafood trio was interesting and a bit more unique--fresh and well-prepared, but I think the sheer excellence of the al pastor had already set my expectations unrealistically high. Despite the uneven experience between the tacos, I can absolutely see why Rafelito's gets so much love. The al pastor alone is worth the trip, and next time, I think I'll just order a whole stack of those and call it a day. If you're in Anchorage and craving tacos, this place is definitely worth checking out--just be warned, once you taste that al pastor, everything else might feel like an afterthought. read more

Tripas tacos are not worth getting and I say this as a tripas fan. Carne asada is good, nice and crisp with a great greasiness. Al pastor is awesome and you can see it cooking in its traditional upright fashion. The Señor corn is sweet but not at all like a normal elote and I think it's lacking. Overall the place is good it's just incredibly pricy. $8 for a pork belly taco and $7.50 for a single tripas taco. I have only been here once but I love this place . The interior is first class ! It's beautiful ! I believe it's family run . I commented on how much I enjoyed my taco and the person I told said it was exactly how his mom made them in Mexico . I was also pleased how nicely they served a single taco . When you walk in, you can see exotic cars being worked on because the owner, Rafel, repairs exotic cars (Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Audi, etc.) in a garage adjacent to the restaurant. It gives the restaurant an interesting "homie vibe" like you are going to a friend's secret restaurant behind their home. Hospitality - If I could give this place 6 stars, I would. I came with four friends 25 minutes before closing on a Friday night. I was slightly nervous that they would not allow me to order and make me order and leave. It was quite the opposite. Our group ordered our meals and drinks and sat down. The owner, Rafel, came out of the garage to greet us. When he learned we were on assignment with the Air Force, he told us about his time in the Air Force as a C-130 Mechanic and comped us a round of drinks. A very classy gesture that will make me come back whenever I am on that side of town and recommend the restaurant to my friends in the military. Salmon Tacos - I had three Salmon Tacos. They were delicious. They come with a fried salmon, with a spicy salsa, and a few other spices and vegetables. Overall, the taste was exquisite, and I highly recommend it. Three tacos was the perfect amount for smaller dinner in between breweries. Pro tip: The place has relatively high prices. So, make sure you bring your appetite and take time to look at all the meal options. Pro tip: This place is very military friendly, So let the owner, Rafel, know if you are in or were in the military. Pro tip: They have a variety of FANTA soft drinks, including the original orange "hecho en Mexico." Pro tip: In the summer, they have "Coffee and Cars" during certain weekends. The owners of the exotic cars that they service bring their vehicles and create a mini car show. Pro tip: It is in an amazing location for a night out on the town. This place had great reviews so we decided to stop in. The food prices are a little on the higher end but the quality does seem better. And you can see the staff cook your food which is always nice. Food and a show!!! We ordered chips n salsa and a burrito to share between the 2 of us. The salsas were great with different heat profiles. The chips could have been better but maybe I'm just partial to Juanita's. The steak burrito was HUGE! Easily it was enough food for both of us. The burrito was sadly not the best I've ever had, I think it needed something to keep it creamier. It was a smidge too dry. Also I would have loved a crunchy thing inside to balance things out. It lacked depth I guess. It was about $35 for chips, burrito and a beer. More expensive than I would have hoped but food isn't cheap anymore. Finally made my way here! I split the nachos with one of my friends. It's enough for two to split, I think it wouldn't be enough food for three people to split. We got the steak for our protein - it was pretty bland. I was shocked a glass of wine was $15! Friendly staff. I will say the nachos came right out of the oven and they wanted me to pick them up and carry to our table. Thankfully the guy behind the counter saw my concern and said he'd bring them over to us. First great-looking restaurant. And then the food came. I lived in San Diego for almost 20 years. I have very high expectations of a taco. With that in mind, I have expectations for tacos. They should be moist and bursting with flavor. What I got was a very high-priced taco that was beyond dry and had no flavor--literally had better tacos at Taco Bell, which I think of as a hamburger helper meal of restaurants. So sad since they went out of their way to make a nice restaurant. Think I will have to make my own. Look up Taco El Gordos in San Diego and compare what we should be getting to what they are serving. This restaurant will be a hard pass for me. read more

We have another Mexican restaurant in town! This one has moved into the building across from Anchorage Brewing Company where the southside location of fire island was previously. This spot just opened up this week, and is currently in soft opening mode operating Tuesday-Saturday from 5pm-10pm. They revamped the spot, and added some gorgeous artwork to the walls from a local Mexican artist, Francisco Ramirez. The murals are stunningly gorgeous, and depict different Latin American folklore. Although this place is new it's gained popularity already, and was very busy when I arrived at almost 6pm today. I ordered food to go as I had a class to attend afterwards. One of my favorite tacos are tacos al pastor so I decided to order 3 of those. They are operating their computer system through toast so online ordering will be easy to use. I also added a side of hot salsa & a horchata to my order. My order was ready very quickly as the preparation is traditional & the meat is roasted on a trompo. The tacos are a decent size, and included pineapple, chopped onion & cilantro. The pastor meat was delicious, and well cooked. Definitely one of the better taco al pastor that I've had while living in Alaska. I do not believe every restaurant that serves Al pastor cooks it the traditional way on a trompo, and tacos al pastor aren't sold at every Mexican restaurant. The horchata was also very good, and not overly sweet. I was very happy that they did not add ice to my glass so you're getting the full pour for $5. My one complaint is that honestly the prices at this place are crazy. The tacos are a la carte, and are mostly 7.50 a piece. I know inflation has been hitting businesses hard, but al pastor is definitely not an expensive cut of meat so I found the prices pretty jarring. The cheapest taco on the menu is the veggie one for 6.50, but most of them at 7.50. There are no deals for ordering multiple, or any combo meals. It definitely gets expensive because no one is just ordering one taco you are at minimum ordering 2. I would typically order 4-6 tacos, but due to the price I stuck with 3. I also asked for a side of hot salsa because I enjoy a lot of salsa on my tacos. On the menu it was listed $1.99, but I was charged $3 for a small 2oz ramekin. That's pretty insane. Most places give you at least 1 side of salsa for free with your order. My tacos did come with a bit on top, but it's typical of Mexican restaurants to allow you to put your own on tacos. They also charge a $1 fee when you order to go--I assume for the boxes? The food here was good, nice ambiance & service was quick & friendly. The prices are definitely a turn off though. They just opened so perhaps they're still getting dialed in, and figuring out the menu. This would've been a 5 star review if the price of the food matched the value. read more

From South San Diego, border town San Yisdro and Libertad, Tijuana. I gave this a full five due to the vibe by being welcome and hearing Spanish in Anchorage was a heart welcoming. The tacos were delicious -- my wife had the seafood trio while I enjoyed a brisket and a pork belly. Service was friendly and prompt. Overall we enjoyed it here and while I haven't eaten too much Mexican in Anchorage, I'd say this is pretty damned good Mexican food wherever you are. read more
