Birria Taco with large Cadillac Margaritas!
    Beth M.

My sister and I had such a great time for Taco Tuesday. We both enjoyed a large Cadillac Margarita and the Birria Tacos and they were so good. I can't wait to visit again. Our waitress Angelica was delightful. The other guests were really nice and seem to be having a great time as well. The restaurant is a quaint place with a full bar.

Went here upon a friend's request to try it. The margarita was watered down and the fajitas were mostly comprised of onions and bell peppers. Also not sure what is happening with this tortilla but I did not partake in the experiment.

Taqueria Durango is located off Page Boulevard in the Overland area, within a strip mall where the family owns this restaurant along with a store and other businesses in their self-named plaza. Parking is shared with these businesses, so be mindful. Upon entering, you can seat yourself anywhere you see fit, and each table is numbered. Not long after we sat down, chips and two dipping bowls (one for me and one for my beau) were brought out, along with three types of bottled homemade salsas with increasing degrees of spice. He ordered the Doble Doble (2 enchiladas and 2 taquitos) that also came with beans and rice. I ordered quesa birria tacos, which did not come with sides. They pride themselves on authentic Mexican food, and authentic it was. Each bite burst with flavor and love. The fajitas at a neighboring table came out sizzling. My beau's plate came out before mine, and mine followed his maybe 7 minutes later. Be mindful that the plates do not come out all at once, but it is so worth the wait. I also ordered a strawberry fresca agua, which I will admit was a bit light in flavor compared to another spot I went to recently, but their food is on point and very reasonably priced. It's no wonder my beau enjoyed going there with his dad as a kid, and that they have maintained their business and more, even since my last time there. I met one of the owners, Angelica, and she was so kind and very sweet. I cannot wait to come back!

First time here and very impressed in how clean and well lit this restaurant was. Service is very attentive and helpful. Chips were warm and fresh and they bring you 3 different salsas, mild, spicy and one I didn't try. I had the Choripollo, grilled chicken smothered in cheese , grilled onions and peppers and Chorizo plus rice , beans and salad. The chick was fantastic so moist and tender with lots of chorizo and onions. Husband had a shrimp dish and loved it. This place is rather unassuming but definitely a place to try.

We took the kids here this past weekend. It has been a while back since I last went here. I like the green salsa here a lot. I got the beef tongue sandwich. The tongue meat is very soft and tastes like other beef to me, with a little stronger taste though. The portion sizes are large. We all a different entree each with plenty of food leftovers. This place food came out with decent timing. We are were satisfied with the food we got. The service is decent.

I LOVE searching the area I find myself for a restaurant, I get to explore new places and find great hidden gems like Taqueria Durango. A small building off Page in Overland, no marque with their name. Has a grocery store (Durango) next door that does have a sign. I opted for the Queso Birria Burrito. I was going to order the Birria tacos, but decided since I had not eaten since a hurried lunch at noon, that the burrito with all the same things would be more filling. It even comes with a side of birria broth. Liz went for the Camarones a la Diabla, our waiter asked about five times if she was sure because it was spicy. After assuring him it was ok, he let her order. I commandeered a few of her shrimp, it was very good with great flavor. I would recommend both dishes as options if visiting Taqueria. They have a small bar available with drinks to be served. Diner Vibe decore. Friendly staff. Knowing some Spanish is a plus, but not required. Stop in and check them out if you desire authentic Mexican cuisine.

I came across this place by chance. I searched in Yelp for crunchy tacos and this place came up. Coincidentally it wasn't far from me so I wanted to give it a try. I grew up in Ca and have lived in St Louis for 3 years. I'm particular about my Mexican food. This place didn't disappoint at all. The birria meat was so tender and flavorful. It was not dry at all. I am a huge fan of Al pastor and this one is probably the best I've had since I've been here. I definitely think it's worth a try

A great go-to spot for authentic street tacos. Loved: the tacos - they're greasy, but the flavor is top-notch. I had Al pastor and steak and both were wonderful, and my husband enjoyed the chicken taco Our tacos came out quickly and we enjoyed the chips and tomatillo sauce a lot Liked: the mole was good, overall was a clean restaurant and nicely refinished inside

As someone born and raised in Miami with really good Mexican options in every corner. I find most of the Mexican food in STL to be very Americanized and bland. This place is definitely the best Mexican you can find in the area 10/10 highly recommend

This is a good little spot with some authentic street tacos. I had the chicken, chorizo, and Asada. All were delicious. Love the three salsas they bring out with their chips which are also very good. I would give these a solid 8 out of 10 on the taco scale. I go to this place on a regular basis because it's hard to find authentic Mexican food in the area.

Nearly a decade ago I picked up my husband from work and there was a deluge of rain bringing highway traffic to a stop. Instead of sitting in traffic for two hours, I turned to Yelp to see what was nearby. Taqueria Durango was a mile away and very highly rated. We took a chance and went there. It's been a favorite since then. Like tv host Samantha Brown says, some of the best food is found in a strip mall. Taqueria Durango exemplifies the veracity of that statement. Salsa and chips are made in house. There are three kinds of salsa in handy squeeze bottles. The chips are warm. Margaritas are good. They are not overly sweet. They have a wide variety of Jarritos. They have both Mexican bottled Coke and fountain soda. The food options are plentiful. There is something for everyone. I've taken very picky friends with very basic preferences there and they loved it and there are options like tripe for the adventurous. I am more adventurous, but not tripe-adventurous. I recommend the fajitas or enchiladas (cheese with green sauce) or street tacos but everything I have had is delicious. Everything is fresh. The refried beans look basic, but try them. They are delicious. Best of all is the people. It is family owned and it shows in the quality and care taken. The ambience is casual, but it was entirely renovated after a fire a few years ago. Mexican shows are on the television. It's clean and comfortable. This is one of my go-to favorites. I have taken many people (work, friends, family) there and everyone has loved it.

My parents eat there on the reg, though not so much the past couple of years, after they implemented their controversial policy of shrinking portion sizes and increasing prices at the same time. Uh, whose idea was that? I have an idea. Let's just say he's not very good at riding a bicycle. I've eaten there literally a million times since it opened up 10 or 15 years ago. Before that, we used to eat at the place in Olivette that was once a Ponderosa, El Paisano or whatever. I don't think they're related, but when that place closed, a handful of employees came over to Carreta's. That was years ago, and they're now long gone. Hopefully, they weren't shipped off to El Salvador. I hear it's not safe there. More recently, we've been eating at a place a bit further west on Olive that was once a Houlihan's. Noticing a trend? Carreta's must be feeling the effects, because they've remodeled and added a few new menu items, some of which will be familiar to Barrel House patrons. The remodel seems to mostly have been a matter of applying a fresh coat of paint and turning the dim switch up to its absolute brightest. It used to be dark in there, like at a fancy restaurant. Now it's like Kmart circa 1986. I didn't check to see if a blue light had been installed in the ceiling, nor did I make it back to near the restrooms to see if they've still got that influencer wall. The menu has been reprinted, and I'm sure they took advantage of the opportunity to jack up prices even further. Many of the old favorites remain, and I'm not sure what, if anything, they removed to make room for the small handful of new items. I saw that they still have the carnitas, my old go-to. It's the only pork item on the menu. If you're familiar with the area, you can probably do the math on that one. Most importantly, they've added Birria, only about 10 years after it became trendy. What's next, a smashburger? A pumpkin spice latte? I've had Birria at a number of places, here in the STL and elsewhere, and in a few different preparations, and it's never not been good. It kinda is the Mexican food equivalent of the smashburger, in that regard. An order of three will run you $16, and it doesn't come with anything other than the consommé and a ramekin of tomatillo salsa. Just the three tacos wasn't the most filling meal I've ever had, but it wasn't half bad, for there not being any sides or anything. They stuff those tacos full with mostly just meat (along with cheese, onions and cilantro), and I'd imagine it's roughly as caloric as eating half the produce aisle at the grocery store. It's so good. I figured it would be kinda mediocre but nevertheless enjoyable, because I thought I had this place pegged, but credit where credit is due. They've exceeded expectations. This was one of the best things I've ever had in a Mexican restaurant. If they don't let the quality slip or try to charge literally $1,000 for it, I could honestly see it becoming a huge hit. What do you know? This place might manage to stay in business just yet, despite the newer, fancier place down the street.

My husband and I have been here a number of times, we've brought our (adult) daughters and their partners, out of town visitors, and we've recommended it to friends. It's not authentic guac with chunks of guac, instead it was creamy and didn't have a clumps of avocado or flavor. It was more of a blended consistency with just a smashed avocado flavor. The chips were awesome! I ordered the mahi-mahi tacos. The first one that was brought to the table was fried so well done the fish inside was rubbery and dry, and the outer coating was black. My waiter apologized, visually confirmed that the dish was not right, took the dish and 5-10 minutes later brought out the same dish, assuming this one would be better. It wasn't. The fish was overwhelmingly fishy smelling, dry and overall, I felt like I would've had a better meal at McDonalds ordering their Filet o' fish. Ugh! The waiter took the one bite eaten from the taco dish and removed it from the ticket. He asked if he could bring me something else, but so much time had passed between the last 2 mix-ups that for me to order anything to replace the meal, my party would've left me at the table so I just had chips for dinner. Where I see an issue, is one would think a manager would've come over apologizing, or something. Yet, I felt like the bad guy sent to her room with no dinner. When the bill came, the waiter, what I feel like intentionally put the bill directly in front of another person from our party rather than in the center of the table. Probably because that person loved his meal... A person in my party got the 3 taco dinner- only ate one taco. Packaged up the other two tacos. I paid, tipped 20% assuming it wasn't the waiter's fault. And we walked out. We got to the front door, the person in my party that had boxed up the 2 tacos realized she left her box at the table, turned around 1-2 minutes after leaving, went back to the table and our waiter said he threw away the box! It wasn't busy ... I understand wanting to clean a table, but there should be some protocol of if this happens, maybe the bussers have x number of minutes before they throw away a meal that someone intentionally boxed up to take home. So -2 stars- I won't go back but if you try this place you might get something delish. My hope is you fall on the positive side of these reviews.
