First time here, I hate to do this but wow this place was not great and we won't be coming back. Didn't see yelp reviews before we went or I probably would have not gone. The food was so bland to start, our chips were stale and the bean dip was cold. The waitress brought us more and the bean dip was at least warm, chips the same still stale. My son dislikes Mexican food so we ordered him a hamburger and fries and he had one bite of each and refused to eat it. (He's 4) I tried the fries and they tasted like .. well idk what it tasted like other than oil. The hamburger was literally the saddest thing I ever saw and was unflavored patty. I ordered a combo plate and I will say the green sauce enchiladas sauce was tasty but the chicken inside was bland but it was okay. The taco shell was stale, the meat, sauce and lettuce mixed made the whole thing soggy. My husband ordered a meat plate with rice and beans which also came with some tortillas with toppings. Flavored well but very thin cut of meat. We asked for limes and they were completely dried out. lol not sure why the staff even bothered to bring them. read more

Great food and service! We came here on a recommendation of a local from the MET Railroad. I got the Chipotle chicken. Great spice! I normally shy away from yellow cheese dip, but this one is great! We were in town and my stepson and gf recommended we come here. The service was good and there was plenty of parking but the restaurant was pretty busy. We were here over the Christmas holiday. I was surprised how busy they were considering the mediocre food. The chips did not taste fresh and the red salsa was ok. I had their special but can't remember the name, it came with a very thinly cut piece of steak very disappointing. My husband had the fajitas and they did come out sizzling, he liked the flavor. We both had a bloody marys and they seemed watered down. The bathrooms were clean and there was plenty of room to sit. You choose where you want to sit. I wanted to like this place. We came across Javi's on our way back to the East Bay and were impressed by the quality service, food and attentiveness of the staff (thank you Marina!). The restaurant is self- seating only, so we were able to select a nice booth location by the window. We were given chips, salsa, coleslaw and refried beans and cheese to start as we looked over our menus. I had the enchilada supreme (note, verde sauce is lime forward) with cheese only, my fiance ordered a burrito supreme with carnitas (came with a healthy portion of carnitas), my brother ordered a combination burrito and roja enchilada platter, and my mom was able to customize her a la carte order with a veggie burrito and guac (she asked for fajita veggies in the burrrito which wasn't originally on the menu). We also enjoyed a nice cerveza with the meal, along with a mocktail for my mom and an imported Coca Cola for my brother. Would highly recommend for a nice, filling meal in Modesto! read more

It's been a few years since we've been to this restaurant. They used to offer "happy hour" drinks on Fridays. Not any more. We got two 'well drinks' (Margaritas) with our meals. The drinks alone were $22 for both. Insane!! Back in the day a Margarita was $1.50 and maybe didn't use the best ("Quervo 1800") Tequila, but a person could afford it. Today it felt like greed. The meals were Cameronas a la Diabla (Hot devil Prawns) for me the 'pepper head' and Fajitas for my wife. Our bill was over $70 for the two of us. Again, insane! It's a family owned business. I've met the son, Brian, who wasn't there today. A really nice guy. He even "comp'd" us a meal once due to kitchen/food issues. But today we were totally shocked by the bill. The food was great, as usual. Service was 'decent'. But the bill, wow!! ‍ Just a heads up. If you like Mexican food like Hot Devil Prawns, with rice n beans, it'll cost you $24 a plate. It's going to be a good while till we go back, if ever. Eating out for two retirees and bills that large for 2 elderly folks, that's taking advantage of the elderly. Javis was always one of our favorite Mexican restaurants, but not anymore! Everything tastes bland now, not much flavor. Whoever is cooking is not putting the right amount of salt or seasoning. The chili relano is still good, but the Asada, bland, beans watery, and bland, rice, bland. Fajitas bland and now hardly any meat if u order steak. Driven by quite a bit and decided to give it a try. We saw that they offer senior menu options of 1-3 items which includes rice and beans with an affordable price, so we went for it. I was very disappointed in getting my take out order, I gave instructions how I wanted packaged, when I went in to place my order . I didn't want them to start on the order until almost the time to pick up, that I would pick up about 3:15/3:30 that way it would hot and not dry. The chicken enchiladas were a disaster. The chicken was dry literally dry. No taste to it. No nothing to add to the chicken you was just chicken rolled up in a tortilla with mullet on top of it. That was it. It was like they didn't even bother putting any spices or any onions or nothing on the chicken. The chicken was literally dry and it tasted like old chicken. What a disappointment same thing with our tacos I ordered three tacos of Carnitas and the meat was dry, literally dry and I'm not lying about that the rice and the beans were stuck to the pan and my dessert that we ordered alongside, which was flan was put on top of hot items. That's how they packaged and by the time I got home all the sauce from the flan had gone into the bag. What a disappointment that they cannot follow instructions for that I paid over $50 and this was for a special birthday what a disaster. I don't recommend this at all. Javier's have always paid taking the time to do the right thing. Cook good food not this time not this time. The whole meal looked like it was thrown together by a very lousy lazy cook with no understanding of good Mexican dish I mean, who makes enchiladas with dried chicken or tacos with dry meat. Normally love the food here however, when the customer service sucks and it only takes on employee to have that effect. When one keeps calling on a Friday and no one picks up the phone to take a phone order( really how long does it take to place a phone order 2 minutes max) then when you come in, to place your order. You get a waitress with an attitude who says because we're so busy we're not taking orders or picking up the phone. That's some crappy customer service. When I looked around, your staff wasn't too busy as they were sweeping the floors in your bartender's eating her ice cream behind the bar you bar seating had 5 people. The customer service would be to pick up the phone and answer the phone to your customers are calling. I'm sure your call in orders are probably a money generator. Not very good service your staff needs to take some customer service etiquette classes, t Some of your staff was even sitting around lollygagging. What's a guy got to do to find great Mexican food? Well, he should make the drive from Pleasanton to Modesto and hit up Javi's. I was visiting friends in the area and they took me to Javi's for dinner. I ordered a taco plate with rice and beans. It was so good that I devoured it all. Javi's is also a popular place to watch a sports game. They have TV screens setup in the bar area. I'll be back again the next time I'm in Modesto. read more

Went for lunch with my children and we got 2 lunch combo plates 15.99 each and 1combo plate 13.99 We also ordered 2 drinks 1 ice tea and 1 horchata, my son revived a "child" horchata they charged us $4.99 for EACH DRINK. I recently had dinner here and overall had a good experience. This was my first time here, and I really liked the ambiance of the restaurant. Had great service, but there are a few things that I didn't care for. It is a very busy restaurant and that's great because it says something about it. But a busy restaurant still needs to be clean. It's a seat yourself system, and we chose a table that still needed cleaning. A staff member did come over with a wet towel and wiped all the remains on the floor. Sorry, but I don't like to walk on food on the floor, theirs being carpet. That's just gross, and it should have been swept up. Also, all restaurants should be using a spray cleaner on the table and then cleaned off. Now for the menu. I was just very overwhelmed by too many choices and ended up just getting a taco salad. I did not want tomatoes on it, and that was taken care of, but the lettuce. Omg way too much lettuce! Serve half of that, so it looks like a salad. Maybe a spoon of beans and meat covered by the lettuce with just a dollop of sour cream and guacamole. There should have been a cup with salsa on the side. Best Mexican restaurant in Modesto. Came here for lunch after our visit to the Tulips field at Dutch Hollow Farms. I've been here multiple times and they never disappoint. Careful not to get full of the complimentary chips and salsa because it's so good. Staff are quick and friendly, came to check up on us multiple times.
