Taqueria El Manhattan entry blocked from sidewalk access so no handicapped access from walkway, only from south end of parking lot

I stopped going to Taqueria El Manhattan in 2020 while Alex Reyes (sometimes Ciro S.) was still the onsite manager. I did not like the disregard for covid-19 precautions at the restaurant during the pandemic. I decided to go the restaurant again last March and have been a regular there again since then. The staff has completely changed since my pre-2023 visits, gives good service and is attentive, and I feel valued as a customer. They are a "family" for me when I go to dine, usually as a single senior diner. The layout of seating changed a bit since 2020, and I find it more appealing. The ambience is what I would expect from a family-friendly Mexican restaurant. The menu had (not unexpectedly) changed from 2020. The take-out version of the menu shows the restaurant name to be "Tres Compadres Taqueria & Mexican Grill." I don't know why there's a difference in name. I actually think the quality of the food is better with the current onsite manager, who is not Alex Reyes. The prices are higher than before, but then costs have increased and must be passed along to customers. The Lunch Specials (served Monday to Friday from 11 am until 3 pm) are still good values with the chicken and veggies being my favorite. I also really like the "Create your Own" combinations, especially the chicken tostado version with rice and guacamole salad. I've tried a number of other menu items and have not had anything I didn't like. The regular salsa served with the tortilla chips is a bit spicy, but I'll still take it over a milder version which they offer. Handicapped parking is very limited in this strip mall (Southend Plaza) and mostly doesn't meet A.D.A. requirements (see photos). If you use a walker or wheelchair, you'll have to chance maneuvering through the parking lot. I tried to find information about the current owner online without success. It's hidden behind an "agent" as some businesses are who want to hide ownership information. The listed agent for Taqueria El Manhattan in South Carolina is Juliana Reyes (Alex's spouse?).

I got the Pollo con Crema lunch Special for $5.95 with some sweet tea.

They are the only ones in the area that offer Suadero. This meat makes the best tacos.

OH MY GAWD! Flavor explosion. I can't even! I don't think there are enough words in the English or Spanish language to describe this! So much flavor!!! I love mexican food & frequent Mexican restaurants in the area several times a week. This is hands down THE BEST I have ever had in any city! I ordered Pollo Con Crema. You could taste the poblanos without it being hot. The cheese stayed creamy & never developed into a blob the way most cheeses do. I seriously can't say enough. Even though they don't serve margarita they still get a 5 stars. Currently they serve wine & beer. They're working on getting their liquor license. You know how when you go to a restaurant in the middle of the day & its not busy usually the service sucks & the food isn't very good. SO NOT the case here. We stopped in at 3pm. The food was again.... AMAZING & the service was prompt & attentive. Oz was awesome & made sure we had everything we needed! I can not gush enough! Eat here! You won't be disappointed! #hiddengem

The food was good but the man who answered the phone to take order was not that friendly. Also they didn't pack well. The sauces were spilt all over in a bag. Pollo con crema and camarons la chipotle were similar in a creamy sauce. Expected some kicks from caramons la chipotle but it was kind of mild. The portion was okay for two people but not a lot. Generally good for the price.

Just moved to the area and have been in search of a local Mexican restaurant to frequent since it's one of my husband and I's favorite. Well I KNOW I've found it!!! This little gem is amazing!!! Service was friendly, efficient, fast, and prompt. The only minor issue I had was that they had no Gordita's. For some who know and love true Mexican food gorditas are a rare find on a menu, so when I came across them I just had to try. Unfortunately, they were not currently selling them. Bummer, but hopefully next visit I am able to try. Now, back to the food. Everything was amazing!! The complimentary chips were great. They weren't those extra toasty, hard, almost burnt looking and tasting chips some Mexican restaurants have. They were light, crispy, hot, and oh so good. The best part which I was not expecting was that this restaurant gives you THREE dipping salsas with your chips!! You get your traditional red salsa, a green avocado salsa, and then this queso and meat inspired dip!! Wow, what a treat!! I preferred the avocado dip while hubby enjoyed the queso inspired dip best. Next were the entree's which came out accurate, hot, and delicious!! I ordered the tacos which I rarely do, but for some reason I was craving them and they did not disappoint. Just the right amount of everything!! *added bonus the waiter bought out TWO additional sauces for my tacos. One was a red based extra hot sauce and then there was a green Tomatillo type sauce which was more mild in heat. Both were good, but I preferred the red. I love a good hot sauce!! I ordered the carne asada and the al pastor which was my absolute favorite. And of course no Mexican meal is complete without rice and beans!! My husband also ordered something outside of his normal burrito and that was the tilapia. He said it was great, but wouldn't order again due to all the bones and not a lot of meat on the fish. In the end even without the Gorditas this place for me was Phenomenal!! I will most definitely become a regular.

I stopped in with my parents for dinner, and like other reviews, was confronted with a vast menu. We decided to eat on the cheap so ordered ala carte. At $2 each we tried the al pastor, carnitas and skirt steak on corn tacos, enchiladas and gorditas. So good! And a side of rice and refried beans (worthy of no further mention). Service was OK, you have to be more proactive with requesting your check. But maybe that was because we were there at the height of dinner rush hour. We will definitely go again!

We enjoy Mexican food and it's our 1st time dining here. The restaurant has a comfortable atmosphere and the menu is quite extensive. Chips brought to the table with 2 types of dipping sauces one was tomato based, the other a green sauce, both tasty. The expansive menu features a large variety of combination plates, fajitas, chalupas, tacos enchiladas, burritos, platilles, etc. soups, salads, appetizers, main entrees of seafood, pork chicken and beef. Drinks, desserts, a kids menu and even burgers. The prices moderate. I ordered a taco salad and waitress asked if I wanted the lunch or dinner size just a small difference in price so I opted for the dinner size. My dining mate ordered a chicken burrito with rice and beans. I considered my salad very small for the dinner size, the taco shell was filled with tasty but soupy ground beef, creating a soggy , watery base, with only a smattering of lettuce and a 1/2 slice of a tomato. I also asked for extra sour cream but didn't think it was extra. I would not reorder this again. I mentioned this fact to the waitress that it was very soupy, hardly any lettuce and she looked at me and nodded and that was that. My dining mate enjoyed all of his meal, said it was tasty. Dining mates food plated nicely, didn't think my salad was. We would eat here again and order something different. Update 6/2018 shell found in meager guac salad, returned and comped. I again ordered taco salad thinking last time I ordered it , a fluke . Chicken taco salad was tasty but still not filled adequately, needed more lettuce and tomatoes in my opinion, otherwise all other food seemed portioned adequately for my dining mate . Will not order taco salad here again. Update: 7/07/18 met friends here who wanted Mexican. I ordered the Mexican chicken soup and it was excellent!

The ambience was your typical hole in the wall Mexican joint with the seemingly universally common menu. I've eaten at many of these over the years with a mix of experience, mostly middling to decent. I ordered the three‑enchilada plate (two cheese, one chicken), and the food was extremely bland. Nothing about the dish stood out in terms of flavor. The one bright spot of the visit was the service -- the staff checked on us regularly and were consistently polite. However, about two hours after eating, I began feeling very nauseous. That nausea lasted for several hours and was followed by bouts of extremely unpleasant "liquid elimination" well into the next morning. I am fully confident these symptoms were the direct result of this meal. I rarely leave one‑star reviews, but an experience that ends with a night of stomach misery absolutely warrants it. I will not be returning, and I would strongly caution others to think twice before dining here.

One thing that also disappointed me was the guacamole. The menu says it's prepared tableside, which usually explains the higher price. However, that wasn't the case for us. It wasn't made at the table, so that was a little frustrating since it seemed like we were paying extra for that experience. Overall, the food was mostly great, but the customer service was lacking. It was frustrating because we could see people waiting, and we were ready to pay and leave to free up the table.
