My wife and I decided to try **Charanda in Fort Mill** after seeing its decent rating on Yelp, but unfortunately our experience didn't come close to matching those reviews. The ambience was your typical hole in the wall Mexican joint with the seemingly universally common menu. I've eaten at many of these over the years with a mix of experience, mostly middling to decent. I ordered the three‑enchilada plate (two cheese, one chicken), and the food was extremely bland. Nothing about the dish stood out in terms of flavor. The one bright spot of the visit was the service -- the staff checked on us regularly and were consistently polite. However, about two hours after eating, I began feeling very nauseous. That nausea lasted for several hours and was followed by bouts of extremely unpleasant "liquid elimination" well into the next morning. I am fully confident these symptoms were the direct result of this meal. I rarely leave one‑star reviews, but an experience that ends with a night of stomach misery absolutely warrants it. I will not be returning, and I would strongly caution others to think twice before dining here. read more

The menu has what you would expect for a Mexican restaurant. We went straight to the lunch specials. My husband got the Arroz con pollo and I got the chicken fajitas. Food was just okay. My fajitas didn't have a lot of flavor. They were so charred that it took over the whole dish. I didn't finish because it was a lot. This was my 2nd time dining at Charanda's, and my family's first. My boys are foodies and I wanted them to have the Charanda experience, as we normally have another Mexican go-to spot. The staff was friendly and attentive. Everything came out exactly as ordered. My boys ordered two entrees to share (steak & shrimp fajitas and the fajita fries with chicken). My husband and I each had the mixed fajitas. My husband made the comment everything tasted fresh and authentic. We also enjoyed the opportunity for both mild and spicy salsa provided on the house. Margaritas aMAZing. Luis was hilarious. Our server provided lots of entertainment and had such a bubbly, positive attitude. It was contagious and we had such a lovely afternoon. Seating was available inside and outside. They had lots of space and many large booths. Best part- they have homemade hot sauce. Fresh, spicy with that slowly building heat. I mixed it with salsa for dipping chips and covered my chicken with it too. Delicious! Authentic flavors in both of our chicken dishes, but not spicy so no worries if spicy isn't your thing. Our party of four sat in the bar where we had great service, drinks, and food. They keep the chips and salsa full for you. Their guacamole is good and there was plenty of it. Fish tacos were a hit with our wives; fresh grilled fish on corn tortillas with salsa and a good sauce on top. I enjoyed a tamale in red sauce which I had a hankering for and it hit the mark. My wife and I drove around looking for a place to eat on Father's Day. All the usual places were packed with over an hour wait. As a last ditch effort, we stopped at Charanda's; and quickly realized that we should have started here. We were seated immediately in the bar area, and greeted by Hailey L. Hailey, you saved my Fathers Day meal outing! As she took food and drink orders, and took phone in orders, she was so professional and polite to everyone that she interacted with. Hailey, like most restaurant workers, because of low staffing, was overworked. This did not affect her professional and polite demeanor. My Carne Asada was delicious; it was so big it hung over the edges of the oversized serving platter...and it was perfectly cooked to my medium rare order. I chose from the lunch menu, the Burrito Texicano. Americanized and with a Tex-Mex sort of vibe to it, the burrito was filled with ground beef and beans, then topped with white queso and crumbled bacon. A nice pile of rice on the side, this was a rather tasty meal and as a lunch portion, pretty good. Chips were fresh and hot, served with a hot salsa and a more mild version. Both were good. Delay in getting seated although the place was just about empty. Quick attention-getting drink and tortilla chips but then it was a long wait for my meal. The Birria Tacos were very good, but the service and the cleanliness was an issue. It is also dark and dingy, like eating in a dirty dungeon. It just seemed they were not staffed appropriately to meet the demand. We saw a three top enter and then leave. No one had spoken to them. A couple sat at the bar and was basically ignored, but they hung in there. The chips were greasy and they played catch up the entire time with drinks and other things. The server was just "there" but never really seemed to care. She then added 18% gratuity, which was smart. She likely recognized that she wasn't providing good service, although I would have tipped 20% anyway. You just never know what people are going through, but when people are paying for a service you have to at least try. Either that or just be gracious and say, "We are very busy. My apologies and thank you for your patients." Most people will understand, if not, that is on them. That was my first time to this restaurant in Fort Mill. We will just go to the one in Rock Hill instead for Birria Tacos or find another place to spend our time and money. I like Margarita's in Fort Mill better anyway. Ordered on door dash, they forgot an order (chimichanga)... which is a mistake and happens. We tried to contact the restaurant. The phone was busy for over 20 minutes. After over a dozen attempts to reach someone, an employee named francisco answers the phone "yeah". Not "hello, thank you for calling Charanda"... but "yeah". After being informed of the mistake, rather than apologizing for the mistake and attempting to correct the issue, Francisco decided the best way to react to the situation would be to rudely defend their order accuracy by saying there wasn't a chimichanga on the order, despite the fact that I'm staring at a kitchen receipt rang up by Christian with the word chimichanga on it. Francisco should take his attitude to the dish room so that he doesn't have to deal with customers. I'll take my business somewhere else. read more

Came here for lunch and got sat right away. I like how they serve hot salsa and mild salsa. The hot salsa is good. I ordered off the lunch menu and got the burrito, taco and rice. My food was pretty good and it seemed like it was a large portion. My friend got the chicken fajitas with corn tortillas. She liked everything about it. The service was not good though. Our server checked on us maybe 1x. We asked for more salsa and no one ever came back. We had to ask for it again and by the time we were done with our food, they brought it out. So I've been here twice with my large family because my brother liked it. The first time was for his birthday dinner. My sister-in-law called to make a reservation which they said they didn't do and she left it at that. We ended up having to push our time back an hour. The restaurant didn't take her call to be notified and I ended up showing early since I drove from Charlotte. They apparently had set us up with a table for the reservation and sat me there. I told my family and so they all shuffled to come early since the restaurant made accommodations even after they said they wouldn't. I waited twenty minutes before my other sister-in-law showed up and by that time the manager had grown annoyed with our tardiness. The male manager came out and yelled at me about why my party wasn't here and that we needed to show up on time if we said we would be there. He went on for about 2 gruesome minutes. I'm a pregnant 35yr old woman and I was stunned. My sister-in-law thought I was about to cry before I assured him that I was just there as a guest and my family was on the way. The rest of the family showed up within 10 mins. I called my husband and he was pissed! I thought I would never go back here, but family!!! The same brother of the sister-in-law wanted us to go here last night for her birthday dinner. This time they wouldn't seat us until we all arrived! Great! Humiliation avoided, so I thought. Unfortunately, our waiter, Luis, was an uptight, non humorous butthole. I'm not saying he wasn't a good server, but you could tell he doesn't like people- which I guess makes you not so great at serving. He was attentive as soon as we sat down, so much in fact that we hadn't had a chance to look at the menu for apps or drinks and were rushed! He wanted to know how many checks there were going to be and for us to order per check so he could sort it out at the beginning of the ordering (which is such a bad practice in my opinion). We were spread out all over with kids and there were 12 of us. I ended up saying to just put it on one check so we could go around the table to order instead. My brother doesn't drink but wanted a pina colada. He asked for it virgin and there were two large margaritas ordered (which I hear are amazing). The order of regular drinks and margaritas came out quick. He handed my brother his drink and when my brother asked what alcohol was in there to make sure it was alcohol free, Luis said none. My brother said oh no.. I need it all. Joking. Luis was upset/annoyed (I can't tell the difference) and my brother said I'm just kidding. I was making sure. I responded saying: you have to have a little sense of humor if you've got us. Luis said: I don't! Just As his colleagues brought the margaritas they spilled margarita all down my 3yr old nieces head, shirt, shorts and legs. An apology was said and then Luis moved quickly into asking for orders as if it didn't happen. My niece was upset and sat there looking at her parents disoriented. I asked if we could have some napkins to wipe her off and he was responsive but quickly got back to needing orders. At this point I was over it! I had decided that if he couldn't even be decent to a kid just sitting there, then he didn't need our money. I went to speak with the manager who had just wrangled some table umbrellas from the rainy wind. It was a much needed laugh and bit of humanity. She was accommodating a couple who had brought their dog and had to move inside because of the storm. She seemed very nice and I was happy it wasn't the man that had yelled at me the month before. I told her to take a minute if she needed it before I spoke with her. She assured me she was fine as she smiled. I told her about my last experience and this one with Luis. That my brother's family loved it here and I felt too uncomfortable to even order any food. I asked for another server and she kindly apologized and immediately replaced Luis with Chantel. Luis came back to the table to with chips and said Chantel was taking over. He apologized for making us uncomfortable and I quickly reminded him that it wasn't a discomfort thing, it was a mutual dislike thing. Chantel was great! My family enjoyed the service and the food. The charana special is what I got last time and it was delicious. My sister got the carne asada and it was tender and tasty, and the guacamole is excellent. When they finished the meal our check was brought over and gratuity at 18% was added. We added 40% more as a token of gratitude. All in all the place is delicious and margaritas are great (I hear). I pray that larger groups don't have these problems in the future and even more I hope to God it wasn't due to us being black. I really appreciate the female manager for making the most of our time last night. She had come to check in and see if we were doing ok along with other tables as I noticed her making her way around the room before we got done eating. I was thankful for her. read more
