The gal at the counter seemed pleasantly surprised to see a Whitey in her place and this Whitey can even speak a little Spanish so all will be well. Two tacos Al Pastor por favor. I ordered delivery from here on Uber eats. The food was fine. But I was disappointed to learn this place advertises on Uber Eats as only "El Pariente" and they leave off the "taqueria". There is another restaurant (also in Newhall and better food IMO) called "El Pariente" and it's where I thought I was ordering from because they have the wrong name on Uber Eats. I advised Uber Eats of the error and they said they use whatever name the business provides them to list and can't make changes without the businesses permission. The al pastor tacos ended up being kinda fatty and the sauce was only okay. Normally I wouldn't mind but it just can't compare with Las Delicias. The carne asada burrito was actually pretty good. Very filling with the pico de gallo, rice, beans and meat. My to-go order came with some chilies, red radish slices and some salsa which didn't have much flavor. Overall a decent taco joint with decent food. They aren't open too late (I think they close around 10ish) so no midnight taco runs here. This is a tough call to make. This is a very good taqueria, perhaps the best in town (though I won't be so quick to make that call, there is much to explore, I've found). But my opinion is elevated in part by the concession that my own palette is biased, and some tastes need to be acquired. A tolerance for heat needs to be elevated. This is certainly a kind of place that tastes better your second and third time around, with a little experience. But I'd warn just about anyone that this food is very hot. I can handle a fair amount of heat, but this was on that next level. I kept pushing, but eventually the chilies had their way with me, and I gave up, 2.5 tacos into a 4 taco plate. Some say plus points for pan dulce, but I can't stand the stuff, here or anywhere. Better than average tortillas, great Mexican Pepsi (but American Coke), friendly staff and a lot of local flavor. This place might shock some Valencia types, but don't let that stop you. I moved to Valencia from Sylmar a year ago. My favorite and cheap Mexican restaurant was Rigo's Tacos in San Fernando. It took me awhile to find this genuine Mexican restaurant. First of all forget about "ambience". This place is in a run down western façade corner by a gas station. The shops look like the ghost town of Bodie except Bodie looks in better shape. I feared the entrance overhang would collapse. The interior is Spartan and you order at the counter. There is a display indicating the dishes served. I ordered the tacos al pastor and my wife chorizo con huevos. Both dishes were great. They do not have a self serve salsa bar but you can ask for pickled carrots, radish etc. and such will be put on your plate. The prices are rock bottom. Dinner for two around $10.00. I had a two taco lunch with a pineapple juice for $4.00. Good genuine Mexican food without "ambience." read more

Kind of a weird set up as it's part of a water store, but the restaurant part was packed. I ordered 4 tacos, 2 al pastor, 2 carnitas. They came up pretty quickly considering how many people were ordering lunch. The tacos were substantial. Lots of meat packed into the tortillas. The carnitas were good; juicy, flavorful, just like they should be. The al pastor was great. Spicy, sweet, moist, crispy...heaven in a tortilla. This place is great. I LOVE their al pastor tacos - secret recipe includes pineapple juice, I am told. So much more flavorful than that stuff they hack off the spit at other joints. Carne asada is also good - I don't mind just a bit of gristle if the seasoning is good, and it is. Get the green salsa if you don't like it super-hot, red if you do. Great tortillas. Mexican pepsi and coke en botella to wash it down with, or about fifty flavors of Jarritos. The restaurants (there are 2 a few blocks apart) are simple and clean, and always have Mexican TV on (futbol, telenovelas or those variety shows); not a first-date place unless your date is a true foodie. I remember over 10 years ago, when they used to sell food in a lunch truck in the Tresierras parking lot on San Fernando Road (now Main). The first time I ate there I was totally blown away. Out-of-town friends would always ask to go there. I swear to god the salsa was even hotter back then. I was devastated when the city shut them down, and rejoiced when they got permanent location. This is the one right by the train tracks, in the little western style complex where Railroad meets Main. Hubby & my oldest adored their al pastor Tortas.
