A coworker and I went here for lunch. There were two other customers there. We ordered queso, two Chimichanga meals and I ordered a Coke. The queso was served cold. We had to request that it be heated up. The chimichangas were good. I was not warned that my Coke was in a glass bottle that it would cost me over $4! Our server only came by our table once, and that was when we got his attention to heat the queso. We went here based on a recommendation by a friend, but I'm not sure if I would give them another try or not. read more

One of the late night eats open in the Doraville/Buford Hwy area. A big group of us ame here shortly before 9 pm and was lucky enough to snag a table for all of us. There were still tons of diners when we arrived. The staff here is super nice and was very accommodating. My only rift is the amount of time it took us to get our food. We were given our water and chips/salsa but it probably took close to 45 mins to get our order. Besides that, everything was tasty. I ordered a pozole that came in a big bowl, could easily been shared. It had tons of hominy and some tender pork pieces. I had it with diced onions and tons of lime juice. I recommend this place for delicious food but beware that there will be a wait on food. read more

Good food and great service is El Viejon Taqueria in a nutshell. From the outside, this place doesn't look like much. It looks like they took a black Sharpie and marked out the "y Cantina" part of the name, so they're no longer "El Viejon Taqueria y Cantina," but just "El Viejon Taqueria" now. They should do something about that sign. There's plenty of parking, but it's evident the freestanding building and parking lot have seen better days. Inside is a colorful Mexican restaurant and bar with lively music, TVs, and a welcoming waitstaff. On either end of the dining room are beautiful murals, one depicting Dia de Muertos and another of three Hispanic actresses. The interior has been renovated since the last time I was here (different restaurant). The space looks relatively new and clean. El Viejon opened in 2018 and replaced Las Palmeras Honduran Restaurant & Bar (http://bit.ly/386YEvb). Before that, this place was Restaurante Guatemala 2. I like what the current owners have done to the space. They've modernized and brightened it up. The restaurant has sturdy spiral-bound menus with helpful pictures of many dishes. They sell mini tacos for only $1.40 each, regular tacos for $2 each, and tacos with handmade tortillas for $3.20 each. They have most typical Mexican fare like tortas ($7.50-9.50 each) and quesadillas ($8.50 each). They also sell chicken, steak, and seafood entrees ($11.50-21.99 each for most dishes), breakfast beginning at 5:30am (!) (most breakfast items are less than $8 each), and they serve menudo and pozole (traditional Mexican soups, $14.99 each) on Saturdays and Sundays. Beverage-wise, they offer a variety of aguas frescas (e.g. horchata, jamaica, guayaba) and a decent selection of alcoholic drinks including beer, tequila, and various cocktails. I made a large group (15-20) reservation with Faviola. Shelley and Valentina took great care of us. Shelley spoke English well and was on top of everything. She started us off with drinks and complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were served in colorful baskets. The chips were the thicker, harder kind. Salsa: runny and mildly spicy. Not my favorite chips, but the salsa was good. They also gave us squeeze bottles of house salsa - one green and one red. The red salsa brought the heat. Four of us split a "Parrillada Estilo El Viejon," the restaurant's most expensive item at $45.99. The name's literal translation is "Barbecue Style El Viejon." It's a big platter that consists of many different components: steak, short rib, chicken, smoked sausage and carnitas with tomato, avocado, bell pepper, onion, cheese and hot sauce, bean and sausage soup, and warm tortillas. Definitely a smorgasbord of Mexican food. It easily fed the four of us. We had leftovers, but we also ordered some mini tacos to supplement. The platter was delicious and could be eaten in a number of ways such as making your own tacos or simply enjoying each meat by itself. My favorites were the short rib and smoked sausage. They were terrific. The short rib was the same type of meat that is used for Korean galbi, served on the bone. It was a little bit chewy, but nothing out of the ordinary and quite flavorful. The small sausage links were delectable. They were on the salty side, but otherwise very good and packed with flavor. My third favorite was the carnitas. Shredded, smoky pork. It was the exact same type of carnitas in the carnitas taco. Tender, moist, and tasty. The chicken was served in strips. Like the other meats, it had a smoky taste too and it was also fairly tender. The steak (carne asada) was OK. One thing I liked about the platter was it came with several spring onions with bulbs intact. Yum. Also, there was a whole ripe avocado included, sliced. All of the ingredients were fresh. Two foil-wrapped packs of tortillas were served with the platter and they came out hot. The bean and sausage soup was served in two small bowls. Also delicious. The center of the platter had a bowl with a red-orange hot sauce and cubes of soft white cheese. The cheese and sauce looked like an Indian curry/cheese dish. Shelley told us the sauce was made with tomato and jalapeno. It was spicy. Two people can order the Parrillada Estilo El Viejon and just take leftovers home to make more meals. Our table ordered a variety of dishes from chicken flautas to shrimp cocktails. Everyone seemed to enjoy everything. I didn't hear anything negative. The mini tacos are a great deal. They were served the traditional way with chopped onion and cilantro on double-layer corn tortillas. The tacos were also served with slices of grilled onion. The shrimp cocktail was served with Mexican-brand Gamesa Saladitas saltine crackers. Additionally, we ordered a bunch of margaritas. The bar was out of margarita mix the night of our visit (Wednesday) so they served skinny margaritas instead. These tacos were exactly what I needed, just about when I needed them. I ordered three tacos, but prob could have eaten 30 lol. I got the grilled chicken (at the recommendation of the server), chorizo y potato and finally barbacoa. I loved them all, but I loved the barbacoa the most! The salas are very spicy, but so well-flavored! After reading other reviews, it seems like this is just not a place with quick service. And that's fine! Pretty decent authentic Mexican food, but a VERY hard to find restaurant. Because there is no lighting outside and is right next to a sketchy abandoned warehouse like building, I wasn't sure I was in the right place whenever my GPS told me to turn in. Walking inside, I was super surprised. They were able to go from a dark, plain exterior to a super colorful and festive interior with Spanish music blaring through multiple TVs next to the bar. Our waitress was very nice and gave great recommendations and I ordered one lengua taco and one chorizo taco both with their handmade tortilla. They came pretty fast and were pretty much the standard for Mexican in atl - tacos were around $2 (there's an up charge for the handmade tortilla and honestly I would just stick to a regular one), the lengua was melt in your mouth chewy, and the chorizo was slightly spicy. The one thing that this restaurant has that is better than any other Mexican restaurant I've been to is their red hot sauce which packs a nice kick and is still flavorful! Doesn't look like much when you drive by, but I had to check it out. It's is a hole in the wall place, but oh man is it full of surprises. The interior. The murals are all hand painted. They are very well done. I am am talking about all the walls. The interior is clean, just not a trendy high class area. People come here for the food. The food. The tacos are amazing. The restaurant outside looks somewhat small and insignificant but inside they have these murals that are wonderful! The place is not huge but still feels open enough for large groups. The servers were super polite and helpful, that is always a plus and the food portions were pretty huge but I have to confess I felt the food was just so so. My brother loved the place and he took us but I was not as impressed. Everything felt either too bland or too salty..... no real in between. I haven't been here in a year or so and I only know one person the blonde bartender. I sat at a table and the young male server sat me down and took my order for a drink then proceeded to hand out every other table their drinks while leaving my drink sitting at the register. Really not impressed especially after seeing it on Instagram. After eating at a couple restaurants very similar to this one I have come to the conclusion there's nothing different between them. Food is overpriced and nothing special. Wouldn't be surprised if it was run by the same owners especially sense the menu is the exact same (colors, food items and pictures) Based off my experience at similar locations with similar food I decided not to get any seafood. I've noticed the portions are very large but only because they give you a huge plate with a ton of salsa and very little seafood. I got the enchiladas with mole and my girlfriend got the soup with shrimp. The soup was good but only had about 4-7 shrimp and was over priced. The mole sauce was not very good and nothing interesting. I probably won't be coming back to this restaurant but for anyone that's interested I suggest see for yourself. read more

It was very busy but there was one table that had just been cleaned that they were able to sit us at. Water, chips and salsa came out right away. A few minutes later, a server came and got our drink order while we looked to decide what food order we wanted. I ordered a cantarito to drink and it was a great blend of citrus and spice. To eat, I ordered tacos. Since I had never been here, tacos are usually a good way to go. I ordered one papa con chorizo, one carnitas and one carne asada. The carnitas was a bit more fatty than I normally like. But the other two were fantastic down to the last bite. There is an orange and a green salsa that they put at the table in squeeze bottles. Both are flavorful but the orange one has much more kick. So if you don't like spicy, stay away from the orange one. I loved spice and it didn't disappoint. First time eating here and was craving some tacos. I order a agua de horchata which was really good. Not to sweet and my mom got the mango which was good as well. As for the tacos it was pretty good. Couldn't say which one I like the most. Tacos de pastor had some pineapple which had a different flavor but it hit the spot. The carne asada was tender and not chewy at all. Both tacos were so juicy as well. Then we ended off with a flan and I can say that this flan was not dry at all. It was moist and soft in the inside. We ask if they didn't put the chocolate drizzle and it was the right choice. Highly recommend if you are craving some tacos!! read more

The food here is pretty good! I would definitely come back. Taqueria El Viejon is one of the newer Mexican restaurants in the area. It is right off of Buford Highway on Shallowford Rd. Unfortunately the parkIng lot is dark and looks sketchy, so this place might be a little hard to find. However, the interior was festive and well-lit. There are beautiful murals on each side of the restaurant. Several of us agreed this would be an appropriate place to throw a birthday party if you wanted to. We came in with a group of 14-15 people and everything went very smoothly. Service was great. There was not a long wait for the food to come out, staff was friendly, and they were quick to refill on drinks, chips, and salsa. The menu features the usual items like tacos, tortas, quesadillas, fajitas, nachos, etc. But they also have chicken chimichangas, chicken flautas, mole, chilaquiles, seafood (I saw lobster and langostino on the menu) and some traditional entrees. Chips and salsa was alright. For my entree I opted for the chicken flautas which comes with four flautas, beans, rice, shredded lettuce, tomato, and avocado. I enjoyed this dish - it was satisfying, filling, and tasty. Presentation of the food was nice and their portions were generous. One thing I thought was interesting was that they serve their chimichangas in a flattened, rectangular shape. To be honest it looked more appetizing that way, will definitely try next time! The overall consensus seemed to be that everyone liked their food. I heard the tacos were delicious as well. Everytime we come here my family and I are treated so wonderfully. The service is absolutely top notch and the food is so authentic and delicious tasting. My husband is spanish and i love all spanish influenced foods, so we are always looking for those authentic places. Valeria is the best. We always make sure we have her as our server and la patrona behind the register area when we walk in she makes sure we get seated even if they are busy. We have never had a disappointment coming here and thankfully it's right down the street from us too because those drinks are strong and delicious. I was super excited to have a taco spot right next to my house, but I was pretty thrown off when the bill came. None of the prices matched what the menu had listed. I ordered 4 tacos (menu listed price was $1.40 per mini tacos) and understandably so, based of the name, they were tiny. $5.60 before tax I also ordered beans, but never received them. $2 My beers were listed at $4 per beer, and I got 3. $12 before tax However, the bill listed each tiny taco at $3.20 ($2 almost extra per taco, $7.20 over price listed). Never got the beans, $2. And of course, each beer was $1.50 higher priced then the menu listed, so $4.50 extra I ate by myself, with 4 tacos and 3 beers, and they gave me a bill for $35. I decided to let it go, because there was an obvious language barrier, but I figured I'd give future customers a heads up. My bill, without the beans I didn't get, should've been around $20 (after tax), but I ended up paying $43 after 20% gratuity (because I used to serve for 10 years, so whatever) I officially still don't have a go-to taco spot near me lol It's the principal of the matter, more than the actual money. When the receipts were brought back to the table they were separated by card. When I got home that afternoon I saw that the server had charged my card FOUR TIMES, WITH FOUR DIFFERENT AMOUNTS. MY BILL IS FOR 16.96. THEY HAVE CHARGED ME $21.36, $26.52, $31.53, AND $33.37, A TOTAL OF $112.78. When I initially realized I called and no none answered the phone. I called today and requested a manager, the woman answering the phone could CLEARLY be heard telling the manager someone wanted to speak with them and the manager refused. She came back and said "the manager isn't here". I let her know I HEARD THE MANAGER IN THE BACKGROUND REFUSING TO COME TO THE PHONE AND SHE HUNG UP ON ME. I immediately called back and said "you hung up on me, while i was talking. it's important can you listen?"She said "well the manager isn't here today". I pointed out that I HEARD the manager refuse to come to the phone and she immediately hung up again. Absolutely disgusting behavior. I reported the charges as fraud and was notified by my bank that in their system the charges posted as "contactless payment" rather than showing that the cashier swiped my card. I popped up around 12:45/1 on a Saturday; parking was easy (they have a lot) and they weren't busy at all so we were immediately seated. I'd venture to say that the decor is definitely reminiscent of a traditional Mexican spot. They do have a neon sign which is very ATL. The waitress quickly came with menus and let us look over for a few minutes before taking our drink orders. She was super patient and kind answering all of our questions. We ordered the combination nachos (chicken and shrimp) and the chicken chimichanga. To drink, I had the La Catrina. The chicken chimi was amazing! The chicken was juicy and seasoned to perfection. It didn't take too long to come out, but I could tell it was freshly made. My husband also really enjoyed his generous serving of nachos. The La Catrina (similar to a rum punch) was sooo tasty! We were in the mood for some tacos last night and were planning to go to this popular taco place on Buford Highway. We decided after seeing the ridiculous long line and crazy parking and searched on yelp and stumbled on Taqueria El Viejon. We didn't have much expectations as it seemed new and the location is not the greatest. As we walked in, it was really bright and new inside. It looked like the owners invested in making their restaurant look nice and welcoming. They weren't busy and we were seated immediately. We ordered cheese dip alongside the standard chips and salsa. The salsa had a nice kick to it and the cheese dip was great. I mean, how can you mess up cheese dip?? (I'm talking to you, Chipotle) We also ordered handmade tortilla tacos with asada, pollo, chorizo and papa con chorizos. I'm very picky when it comes to chorizos because some places make it way too salty, but theirs was perfect! We both enjoyed our tacos! Their salsa verde was also the bomb! I'm so glad we found this new taco spot and will definitely be back. They're also open late and will be great for late night eats. read more
