Me and my family celebrate birthday dinners here every year. The seafood is fresh and the mexican style of of preparing is unique and unlike anything we've had. Nothing comes close and we've tried many others. We always order seafood platters because it provides variety, huge portions and we enjoy the family style sharing when eating together. The service is great, the hostess is always polite and the chef always comes table side to check on us and quailty of the food. Menu prices are "market price" so just ask and hostess will confirm prices. Wow! This place really knows how to season the food. The grilled fish was absolutely delicious. If you do not like to peel shrimp and take the head off yourself there is one dish that comes with the shrimp fully peeled with the head off that is very tasty. I like that they give you a ceviche appetizer when you walk in and sit. It is very tasty and the sauce that they give in a small black cup has a very nice kick to it. Our waiter was very friendly and recommended really good dishes to try. I will definitely keep going back here. I am so tired of ordering fried fish and it comes breaded with no flavor. They give you whole fish and if you like to eat the eyes and brain you will definitely get the fried fish experience you would get while traveling overseas in Asia. Note: If you do not like seafood they do not have anything else. The fries and fried rice is good though. This is a solid place for me for dinner celebrations (birthdays, promotions, etc.. ). It has a beach side vibe to it and the staff is usually pretty nice and attentive. Prices can be up there but that is to be expected in a seafood restaurant. Will say that the serving sizes are huge and the flavor is consistent. Not a fan of their parking though, near impossible to get a spot and in more than one occasion they have been out of something we wanted. This was my second time. The first time was great. This time, I feel like we were scammed. Food took forever and came out all at different times - like huge gaps of over 15 min. Also, the margarita was $18 which is luducrious and price is not listed on the menu. The most ridic was that I pointed to a picture of an entree with ONE FISH FILET and server brought the plate and it was three filets---and thus over $60 just for that. My meal was close to $100--for that much money, there are a million other places I'd rather eat. Sadly- I will not be back. read more

I ask for something and they forget about me and I have to ask the cashier (whose always in a bad mood) that I need something and she always says they'll bring it to me and they never do. You can find Mariscos El Veneno at 5082 Buford Hwy NE, Atlanta, GA 30340- this is the free-standing building right to the left of El Taco Veloz and the former location of one of Atlanta's first sushi buffets. Parking is very limited out front, with a few spaces in the back - that's probably the greatest drawback to visiting this very good Latino seafood restaurant. This is my first visit to Mariscos El Veneno - I have visited on other occasions as it's transitioned through several concepts so I've been wanting to give it a try, on this night with our regular Buford Highway Restaurant Clawr group. The interior is rather cosmopolitan and simple with teal-colored walls, wooden tables and chairs and lots of green plants. There are tanks with crabs and other seafood towards the back wall. You're given a full-color glossy menu that's thankfully riddled with photos so you can see what you're getting - the options here are extensive and should satisfy even the pickiest seafood lover. Along with the menus were were a plate of lime wedges and a basket of fried tortillas and saltines - seemed appropriate being where we were. We also received a bit of delicious habanero salsa with lots of chopped red onion. We started with some tostadas covered in shrimp ceviche - this was fantastic and very fresh - look for "Tostada de Ceviche de Camaron" on the menu. We next ordered various entrees that propelled us into another world of delicious seafood goodness. The seafood was exceptionally fresh and cooked to perfection - I'd say that this place is on par with fine dining establishments elsewhere except with an improved selection and extra spiciness - right up my alley really. I personally went with a spicy seafood soup filled with seafood including a sweet langostino "Caldo Venedo" - I think John F got the Jalva (crab) soup. Actually everything we ordered (and we all tasted each other's plates) was delicious: "Salmon a la Parrilla" (grilled salmon), "Mix Brochetas with Cayo de Acha, Mahi y Camaron" your basic grilled seafood skewers, everything was fantastic. Service here was very good with a very attentive staff that strove to answer our questions. The portions here are also very large - I think the value, especially fort he seafood was exceptional. The food is great. Beware of the extra cost that is added to your bill. Tips are added at an 18% which includes the tip. Is a way for employers to pay lower wages but scamming the customer in the process. The service is fI am not sure what's the deal with the bathrooms. I don't recommend using the bathrooms at all. Service was terrible from the time we arrived to the time we left. It's Father's Day we get that but when asked questions Priscila answered with an attitude, we got our food however my husband's food arrived when my daughter & I were half way through our food, the table next to us arrived after we did & got their food before my husband. We didn't get an apology til my husband cancelled his order & was told they were busy since it was Father's Day. I guess she realized her tip wasn't going to be 20% then she started to apologizing but it was too late. You can find some of the biggest oysters in Atlanta here at Mariscos El Veneno. This is a Mexican seafood restaurant that has been on Buford Highway for many years. Since it's next door to the popular El Taco Veloz, it's easily overlooked. The restaurant looks like a small dump from the outside, but inside, it's actually a spacious venue. There are multiple dining areas, decorated with plants, big screen TVs to watch soccer (futbol), fish tanks, and live music. Inside and out, the place is painted in bright aqua blue colors. There's a casual and laid back yet festive atmosphere. The space works well with big groups and families or those who just want to relax, unwind, and watch a soccer match. This is an authentic Mexican eatery with a predominately Hispanic clientele. Mariscos El Veneno is a direct competitor to another Atlanta area Mexican seafood restaurant: Mariscos La Riviera Nayarit. While Nayarit is newer and nicer, I think Veneno has the edge when it comes to food and service. Both Veneno and Nayarit serve Nayarit cuisine, named after the 200-mile stretch of coast in western Mexico. Veneno has two other locations, both in Chicago. Fish, shrimp, crab, lobster, crawfish, oysters, mussels, clams, scallops, octopus... If you like seafood, you've come to the right place because Veneno seems to have just about everything. Dishes include ceviche, cocktails, baked oysters, raw oysters, seafood salads, seafood soups, and various platters and entrees. The menu is written in both Spanish and English, but best of all, there are helpful, accurate pictures of every dish so you know what to expect. For seafood, I think the prices are fair. Expect to spend about $15-20 each for most entrees, more if you plan on ordering one of the crab, lobster, or shareable platters ($25+). Portion sizes are ginormous. I'm allergic to shrimp (and other crustaceans) and there seems to be shrimp on a majority of the dishes. Fortunately, the kitchen can accommodate allergies and shrimp has been removed from the dishes I've ordered. That is nice of them. A basket of fried corn tortillas and crackers, a plate of lime wedges, and a serving of the restaurant's housemade habanero salsa is complimentary and served at every table. The habanero salsa includes minced onions and is spicy. Each customer also gets a free ceviche-topped tortilla. It's delicious. I believe fish is the only seafood used in the ceviche which also includes chopped cucumber, tomato, carrots, and onion. It's nicely cured with a good sour flavor. In general, the food and ingredients are fresh. A dozen oysters are $14.50 (half $9.50). The oysters are huge. They're the biggest I've had in Atlanta to date. There's no cocktail sauce nor mignonette sauce. There are, however, five different hot sauces at the table plus ketchup and salsa, though I'd much rather have cocktail and mignonette sauces over those. The oysters themselves are plump and succulent, though they could stand to have more flavor and brininess. If you like fish, try the Huachinango estilo Nayarit ($17.99). I've had this dish at other Mexican restaurants around town and find Veneno's version to be one of the better ones. It consists of a whole fried fish (tilapia, I believe) served with sides of salad with sliced cucumber, tomato, carrots, and red onion, sliced orange, rice with chopped veggies, a buttered roll, and French fries. It's a lot of food. The fish is savory, served charred and crispy. The meat, served bone-in, has been pre-cut into sections. Another fish dish I've tried is the Salmon a la Parrilla ($17.99). This dish comes with the same sides as the Huachinango above (salad, orange, rice, roll, fries) plus three salmon fillets. The boneless strips of salmon have been chargrilled. I think the salmon is sufficiently fresh and is OK quality, though it could be seasoned better. There's just not a whole lot of flavor and therefore, I do not recommend unless you're going the healthy route. The sides are pretty generic and straightforward. Due to the large plates and massive portion sizes, many entrees have a nice wow factor to them. This includes the Pina Rellena ($16.99) which is half a pineapple stuffed with seafood and topped with melted cheese and the "7 Seas" soup which comes with a variety of seafood. I debated whether to give this 3 or 4 stars. After getting my food, I resolved to give it 3 something, with service bumping it to 4 stars. Our one lone waiter was very efficient with bringing complimentary tostada starters, orders, food, and checks. There were about 10 of us. He was very professional and pleasant. Other than the cashier, he spoke the best English. Not fluent, but enough to take note of allergies. Menus come with pictures. The pictures should be an indicator of portion amount. These plates are massive. Warning, share it with someone or you will have several meals to bring home. I ordered the pineapple dish which was a half pineapple cut open and filled with a hodgepodge of seafood (octopus, etc). Cheese was melted on top. I wasn't too impressed. I was impressed, however, by the seasoned fries. Oh boy. I would come back just for these. I'm just a sucker for potatoes, especially soft, hot, and seasoned ones. So what brought the ratings down to 3 stars? The (women's) restroom. Even before walking in, I can smell it from feet away. It was so dirty I didn't dare touch the door knobs without a paper towel. I used it only to wash my hands. After our meal, I was going to use the commode but unflushed paper and .. another solid surprise .. led me to try and flush it. The flusher rotated 360 degrees and barely flushed anything. By that time, I could barely hold my breath any longer and I just had to flee. When I saw that one of my favorite seafood places in Chicago had a location here, I couldn't believe it! So here we go to see if it was similar... And yes, it's the same recipes. The place is what you call a "hole in the wall" but most traditional Mexican places are so that just an FYI, nothing to worry about. The food, oh my oh my, delicious. Parking can be tight and the English isn't great in this place but the food was fresh. They don't have any draft beer or a soda fountain so everything comes in a can/bottle and they don't appear to have a liquor license, however there was some frozen margarita looking thing (I didn't ask about it). Came here early for father day, but half of the room was not available for us to sit.. do not know why.. but some people from the available side was able to go to the other side.. which was very unfair?? So what? Did they rent the whole room to the people who is on the empty half? But whatever.. This place is the best place i known for seafoods, my favorite place for Mussels! If you love mussels, come try it here, its kinda expensive but its worth it, $22.99 for a big plate. If you want a cold meal, try the Cocktail Shrimps, also very good too, its very cold and served in a glass cup, but can also serve hot if requested, put some crackers inside for crunchy taste! Everything on the menu is expensive but well known price for seafoods prices! Atlantans are missing out on one great Mexican place if they miss out on Marisqueria El Veneno. There are no pork or barbacoa tacos here. This outpost of a Chicago based small Mexican chain is a true seafood lover's delight. Once seated, each diner at your table is presented a large complimentary tostada covered witrh a mountain of marlin ceviche, mixed with carrots, a vinegary spicy sauce and chopped celery. The portion is huge and might well be enough for dinner itself if you don't have a big appetite. It should be noted that much of the staff at El Veneno doesn't speak very good English. While the menu does have Englsih translations, it may be best to take a spanish speaker with you (or a spanish dictionary) so that you can effectively communicate what you want. El Veneno specializes in seafood cooked in the style of Nayarit, a western state bordered by the Pacific Ocean. There are three primary sauces/preparations that one can order on any variation of seafood. In Estilo Nayarit (in the style of Nayarit) is a preparation in which the kitchen may deep fry a huge whole red snapper (pictured above), then cover it with a sauce of shrimp and sweet red onion sauteed in butter, vinegar, chili sauce, spice and garlic. One of my favorite dishes here. The fish is scored and deep fried to moist succulent perfection, then, its criswpy skin is topped with the mouthwatering Nayarit style sauce. Al mojo de ajo (a marinade of garlic) is a preparation in which the kitchen may serve giant head on langostinos sauteed in butter, garlic vinegar and spices. Absolutely delicious. Generally anything on the menu can also be ordered a la diabla, which is a hotter version of the Nayarit sauce sans tomatoes. Menu items are priced from a very reasonable $15.99 for a giant whole red snapper to $90 for a seafood sampler or a 4 lb lobster cooked Nayarit style for enjoyment by the whole table. The restaurant has a bar and there's plenty of cold Modelo to go with your seafood feast. The food at El Veneno is as fresh and authentic as one will find in Atlanta. Its a real treasure that Atlantans are fortunate to have in their fair city. read more

This was our first visit here even though I have driven by it hundreds of times. We happened to go on Cinco de mayo but it wasn't that packed. When we arrived, we were quickly seated. The restaurant is what I would have expected for a Mexican restaurant on Buford highway, colorful but not too clean. Overall the food was really good and fresh. The main complaint I had was the pricing. Overall the prices seemed very high but we had a two menus that showed the crab legs on one menu at $40 and on another at $65. When we asked which one was the correct one, they said $40 was the old price and they just changed it. A $25 increase on one plate seemed a little crazy too me, so I avoided it. I got a shrimp plate that was cooked in some buttery seasoning sauce. The shrimps freshness and flavor were really good. After a while, the amount of salt in the seasoning was bothering me. I would suggest a smaller portion with a side. The plate was $45 for about 1.5 lbs of shrimp with nothing else. Again I thought this was a high price. The second dish we ordered was the shrimp kabobs, which came with rice, salad, fries and priced at $21. This seemed a better price for the amount of food you received. The shrimps were large and fresh. Overall the food is great but plan to spend some money there. read more

Often overlooked by the place next door El Taco Veloz, people generally stop there, get amazing tacos and always come back for more. However, if you're willing to spend a little extra, this place is only a few feet away. A large interior decor with fishnets on the ceiling and nice seating by the window. The first thing before you even order your food is the amazing appetizers. Tortillas literally covered in all kinds of tuna and other vegetables. With at least 5 assorted hot sauces ranging from fire to straight up jalapeno mix, your taste buds are in for a hellishly good ride. Had i not just watched a seafood edition of Bizarre Foods, i would not have scouted this place out, but the craving was unstoppable. The plates here have all kinds of seafood so I tried the shrimp and octopus (Copa Veneno). It arrived in a large glass with crackers on the side. Let me say I have never had octo so delicious in my life. I was actually expecting to be chewing on the often rubbery texture but surprisingly it had a very soft one and broke away as i ate it! This is how octupi should taste like! From one of the food banners in the restaurant we saw this amazing cornucopia of food that was actually served inside of a hollowed out pineapple. Now this was to be a task and luckily we had three people with us. The price was a good $15 but man what a lot of food! The Pineapple was very fresh, with its insides cut along the side. Inside of the pineapple was melted cheese with assorted seafood inside. Heavenly aroma and even better taste. Its rare you will ever get such a mix as melted cheese pineapple and seafood in one bite. We did not manage to finish everything but were completely satified with our goal to find real seafood. While El Taco Veloz is nothing to shrug at, if you're willing to spend the extra buck, make it a point to stop right next door at this place, especially if you have a craving for seafood and spice. read more

I've been going to this restaurant for years and nothing ever affected me. Recently, I tried shrimp again and I got food poisoning. It wasn't severe but I had excruciating stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea, and nearly fainting when I stood up. The only positive thing was the natural orange juice, it was amazing. I think I ordered the wrong item. That's the main reason for my 3 star rating. 3.5 for parking - a few in the front and more in the back. It's a small Mexican spot but I felt that it wasn't lacking. It was clean and the service was good. Our food came quick (about 10 min after ordering). It tasted fresh and made to order. My order "camarones a la diabla" were surprisingly not spicy. But that could've been my fault because the waiter offered me the medium spiciness version. I was afraid they'd be just as spicy as the habanero salsa they bring out with the complimentary tostadas de ceviche. My mouth was on fire with just a spoonful. Either way I enjoyed the shrimp. & FYI they give you so much food! I will complain that they did not have piña coladas when I was there (Saturday around 6pm).
