I have very mixed feelings about this place. On one hand, it is by far the best tasting Mexican food in SE Massachusetts. On the other hand, it was the worst service I have had in recent memory. We started by asking for 2 margaritas and 2 waters. The margaritas were very good. The two glasses of water had no ice and were room temperature. When we got the bill at the end of the meal, we were billed for 2 bottled waters at $1.50 each. I'm guessing that we were not supposed to be billed for the water, but the inexperience and lack of English by the waitress likely caused the error. I paid the bill without comment. There were no chips given or offered. To best describe the ability of the waitress, imagine that you took an 18 year old who had grown up in another country, had never been an employee or patron in a restaurant, given her no training, and left her there on her own as the only server in the place. Each time anyone wanted to order anything, she had to go back to the bar to get her order book. I watched her make 5 separate trips to deliver food to the table next to ours when any normal waitress would have done it in 2 trips. After we finished eating, it took another 20 minutes to pay the bill and get out. Be aware that the tip was included on the bill. The restaurant is not in a great part of town, but I did not feel unsafe. My wife was a bit uneasy walking back to the car. While in the area doing work for a client, I decided to visit a local climbing gym and then wanted to grab a late lunch before hitting the road. It was almost 4 o'clock when I stopped in looking for something quick to go. The staff that greeted me and welcomed me over to the bar were unbelievably friendly. After a quick glance over the menu I decided on three chicken tacos with added tomatoes. Maybe five minutes later my food was ready and I was out the door with a to-go container that I could hardly wait to open. They made sure to include extra napkins and when I asked for some hot sauce they gave me two of the most delicious sauces I've had. The red one was great on the chicken tacos and provided a nice amount of heat and some smokiness. The tortillas were perfectly cooked and fresh and so was everything that came inside of them. Food was mediocre at best. No tap water available only bottled water at $2 each. The gratuity was included in our bill which was not pleasing to us at all. We had a coupon but we won't be back, ever. We were the only ones in the restaurant and I can understand why, the place isn't great at all. read more

Fried chicken in torta was burnt / black. Steak in the carne asada dish was tough and overcooked. Delivery packaging was sub par and take out containers were full of grease. Fajitas had about three shrimp (whatever) and two of dishes had several small pieces of glass in the rice. read more

In my ongoing search for authentic Mexican food I lunched at Taqueria La Raza today. La Raza is absolutely the real deal, with the occasional Guatemalan twist. It's a surprisingly large restaurant, very clean, and comfortable; there is separate cantina area with a full bar seating and a large dining area with booths as well as long tables suitable for families. Lucretia was the server, cashier, and bartender. Of course I was there right after they opened mid-morning and was greeted warmly. Having reviewed the menu many times in advance I knew what I wanted to sample--their beans and rice, a pork tamale, and some tacos. Today they did not have either al pastor or tripas (tripe) tacos which were my first choices. No problem, my next choices were jalisco (goat) and lengua. I also ordered a medium Jamaica (hibiscus flower tea) and then took a booth seat. The Jamaica was delivered shortly thereafter. Since I was the first customer of the day, I waited for about 10 minutes for my food to be brought out. Everything was absolutely delicious. The beans were refried black beans (a nod to Guatemalan cuisine) were the most flavorful I have ever had. There is an ingredient in the beans which I can't quite place which elevated their flavor profile (may epazote). The Mexican rice was quite good without any of the vegetable additions you find at some places. The goat and tongue tacos, topped with white onion and cilantro and then I added a healthy amount of the salsa roja, were exquisite. The tongue was wonderfully soft, the goat had just a little bit of crispness to it from being heated on the hard top grille. So flavorful. Then there was the tamale wrapped not in corn husks but in a banana leaf (more Guatemalan influence). Wow, the corn was light fluffy, the chunks of pork inside tender and flavorful. I used the house salsa verde (which comes along with the salsa roja in a bottle) liberally to add another level of spice to the tamale. Having lived in southern California for some 38 years I came to know regional Mexican (and Salvadorian) cuisines quite well. This is by far the best tasting, most authentic tasting Mexican food I've had on the east coast. This was sort of a scouting meal for me to check the place out. Next time I will be returning with guests to explore other parts of the menu. La Raza is very convenient to the 195 which is a bonus in terms of convenient. Pro-tip: bring some quarters for the parking meters on Acushnet. read more

The service for takeout wasn't all that friendly or time-considerate, but the tacos were good. I'm used to west coast street truck meat on the rotisserie, so I might have a dif taste. Other than the meat being slightly dry, the seasoning was great! My bf had the asada burrito and he enjoyed it. I had 6 tacos: pastor, asada, pollo, churico and barbacoa. Small. Neat. Inexpensive, delicious! We went there with some family to try out the local flavor, and we were not disappointed. As far as tacos, the best meats for us were carne asada and chicken. Ok so the food is absolutely fantastic. My only complaint was the lines were very very dry but we just asked for extras. You walk into this place and don't expect too much. It's a tiny hole in the wall. The food on the other hand is fantastic. We both got tacos. I got two steak and one chorizo taco. My partner got one steak, one chorizo and one tongue. Hands down some of the best I've had outside of actual Mexico. The only problem is I am pretty confident we got up-charged for not ordering in Spanish. The tacos were supposed to be $2/each. We both got a Mexican Coke is too and the total came to $24. Not a terrible price for lunch but it just seemed very inconsistent with math. Regardless, we will totally go again. Finally secured another rare authentic Mexican restaurant to dine at. The street tacos are prepared and loaded just like I was used to from out West. They only charge $3.00 which is ridiculously low, and they are full to the brim with carnitas, chicken, chorizo, carne asada, and more. I drive from Plymouth to New Bedford for the tacos and burritos. Great ambience and extremely clean restaurant. Owners and staff work hard to accommodate their guests. Much more expensive than I expected. We ordered 6 tacos the lady told us they weren't "mexican tacos" and I was like "ok?" This is kinda confusing for me as a gringo because I saw the pictures of the tacos on yelp which looked just like mexican tacos, and I was given something that was covered in sauce and cabbage which looked nothing like the yelp photos.
