Got this place as an Uber Eats order and I am absolutely blown away by how incredible it was. Everything arrived steaming, tasty, and packaged well. They even threw in some escabeche on the side! I had high hopes since this was a restaurant originally in Pilsen and I am glad to have tried it. Definitely have found my new spot. The menu is ample and everything is prepared with care. I can't dispute that others have had different experiences. As part of a sixteen-location chain, the staff is going to vary. But here's our view: - Nice, big menu with a wide range of typical favorites plus authentic items like nopales. - Authentic food for real people (there were 9 other parties there tonight, about 7 were conversing in Spanish). - Large servings (my enchiladas plate came with 4 enchiladas, the fajitas came with 5 tortillas and served two people). - Excellent salsa; pickled vegetables on the table; fresh limes by the bucket-load. - Greasy tacos if you let them sit in a bag for 20 minutes - real tortillas are made with lard and real meat has grease in it and if they're hot and bagged they're going to get greasy. Duh. - Excellent service by two hard-working Mexican ladies. So, would I travel a long way to get here, passing several other good Mexican restaurants along the way? Nope, I would not. I've been coming to Los Comales for over 20 years now, and they've never disappointed. One thing I barely notice though, they don't all have the same menu and some of their prices will vary on certain dishes. This time around, I decided to order a lengua Torta. My wife a carne Asada burrito and my son ordered some tacos. Los Comales doesn't serve your traditional lengua. Instead of cutting the lengua in cubes, they serve it almost whole. Not only do they do that to their tacos but for their Tortas as well. The Torta was delicious and came with lettuce, tomatoes and beans. My only complaint is why the hell would they put the Torta all the way in the bottom of the bag with the tacos and burrito on top of it. My Torta was completely smashed. My wife's burrito was also delicious. We substituted the lettuce for rice and it more for an excellent burrito. They unfortunately don't use arrachera for their carne Asada, rather cheaper taco meat, but as long as it's seasoned and cooked right, it will do the trick most of the time. I've been coming here for more than 20 years and I don't think I'll be stopping anytime soon. read more

Had a fantastic lunch at Los Comales on a Saturday afternoon. We enjoyed barbicoa, Al pastor, and chorizo tacos in addition to the best chips and salsa I've had in years. Great spot for a late night taco. All the times that I've been here have been around midnight or later after a night out on the town. Good tacos, fast service, and they have a parking lot! I usually get the 3 taco dinner and it never disappoints. Love their green salsa. Check them out, they are on the less busier block of Milwaukee avenue. It's hard to find a taco spot with authentic flavors and this one really hits the spot. If you've tried the famous Los Tacos in New York, I would say Los Comales is very comparable. You can't pick the burritos, but I was a good deal. 1 chorizo, 1 steak, 1 chicken, and 1 vegetarian. Everything was pretty good. It came with spicy carrots and red sauce/green sauce. Came here after a good night of drinking at Navigator Taproom across the street. We had some of the tacos from this joint as Navigator is a BYOF taproom. I order a steak torta and had to send it back, since they added a purée of guacamole on top instead of fresh avocado. Continuing reviewing taco places for y'all. This used to be my favorite taqueria. This was my to go place for tacos in my neighborhood. However, lately the flavor is different. I knew something was different, and indeed was. I have been coming here for a long time, years, to eat tacos. I know some of the staff, which is very good and friendly. I know them not as friend, but as a regular costumer. When they asked me few months ago how was the everything I answered that the food was weird. The staff told me one of the cooks was gone and you can tell. The food tastes different. The cook was there many years. I went today again and the tacos were so so. The breakfast, huevos rancheros wasn't good. But what mad mis give this place the 2 stars is the extra charge if you use a credit card. :( That is not good. Who carries cash all the time? Honestly, don't know why this place has such low reviews! It's nothing fancy, but it has great food at an extremely affordable price and friendly staff. We were immediately seated, quickly attended to, and checked on throughout the meal. I have been to the Pilsen location, which I prefer to this one because of the menu options and I think there's a little more heat to the food there, but this is definitely a solid spot as well. I got the horchata, tacos, and quesadilla. Everything was super authentic and sooo cheap! On Tuesdays, they have $1.25 tacos, but tacos are normally only $1.99 anyways! The horchata was also sweet and cinnamony and paired well with everything. The quesadillas were my absolute favorite and the melted cheese really made the dish. I would definitely recommend the al pastor! I got the steak one as well and it was good, but if you're craving something with a little more flavor, I'd try some of their others. Overall, it's not a 5-star restaurant, but they have some of the best tacos and quesadillas I've ever had and great service as well! read more

This place gives off the vibe of a very Mom & Pop cantina. A really nice little place. Unusually though, also serves booze. Well, they didn't to me, but apparently they do. It's cheap. Marg, $5, chorizo taco $2, Pechuga De Pollo Empanizada $12 Spicy pickles on the table in a box. Red and green salsa. Red being the hitter of the two. I enjoyed it. Apart from the fact my Marg didn't turn up. I'm sure it would have been wonderful, but after showing my ID - then the food arriving 10 mins later (a more than suitable amount of time, no issues there) there was no Marg. Me being a Brit, kept tight lipped and waited. Until half way through the food. Then I asked. The waitress apologised. I didn't end up with one as by this point I was nearly ready to go. The food was good. Not too flavourful however, so liberally use the provided sauces. The corn tortillas served with the main were great. The taco was really nice. We actually just came here because there was a wait at Wasabi across the street and we wanted a snack. We were the only non-spanish speaking people in there if that's an indicator of anything. I think they also sell margaritas/beer. They have a $2 veggie taco here, it's not on the menu but you can just ask for it. it's small, but perfect snack size. It comes with pickled veggies on the side, and they have a couple different sauces on the tables. It wasn't mouthwatering amazing but it was a solid choice, pretty good. Stumbled in around midnight after a show at the Concord and I promise we were not that drunk but it was still so flippin good. I got three tacos (chicken, beef, pork) that were incredibly satisfying, especially the pork which practically melted in the mouth or maybe I was just swallowing faster than I could chew. They also had a very fine horchata the size of my head which is my favorite size for a horchata to be and it wasn't watered down garbage like a lot of places serve. Taco Tuesday is where it's at! I've gone to several locations and I notice there was a difference in some of the menus. I really like the fish tacos at the Milwaukee location up north and then I absolutely love the el pastor at the Logan square spot!! The deals on taco Tuesday are selective. I think the locations that have shrimp and fish, do not discount those. This chain is my go to taco craving. It's not fancy tacos but it's reasonably priced for how good it is. read more

I'm surprisingly familiar with the category of restaurant known as the Mexican food dive. Having lived in Texas for over a decade, I've been in good ones, bad ones; impressive ones, and horrifying ones. This one was A-OK - far better than I had hoped for. I had an avocado torta, and my dining partner had the chicken fajitas. Both were very nicely presented (for a meal that just costs a few dollars). My torta was particularly tasty, thanks to the bread being carefully toasted on the grill. The fajitas were extremely generous, though a bit difficult to eat since we weren't given a plate. Rice was bland. The pickled carrots, cauliflower and other veggies on the table were delicious, but are stored in giant food vats that -- sorry -- make you wonder a) how long they've been there, and b) how many grubby kids' fingers have scooped around in there trying to find the one piece they wanted. *shudder* Didn't stop me from eating them, though. Just wish it were a bit more sanitary feeling. We had just tap water with our meals, but I will say that the licuados looked droolingly delicious. Service was surly. read more

My girlfriend's family moved here from Mexico and has lived in this area for well over 50 years. I kept challenging her when she said that this was their consensus for best taco restaurant. After all, so many other places have higher Yelp and Google reviews, so how can it be? How silly of me. You might find better looking, better smelling, and--by god--even better tasting tacos! But make no mistake, these are the overall "best" when push comes to shove. Special shout out to the chorizo and al pastor tacos, but you can't go wrong with any type at this location. Also, I recommend eating in, rather than ordering to-go or delivery; it's not that delivery or to-go makes it any worse, just that eating there makes it that much better. An easy 5 stars read more

This is one of those places that I associate with drunken post-bar eating that I will occasionally drive by it during the daytime and be surprised that it is open and there are people who choose to go there during regular business hours. If I were writing this review in an inebriated state I would probably be adding another star, but the reality is that this is a good but not great place for standard Mexican fare. I am a big lengua taco aficianado, and I have to say I've been a bit disappointed with their offering on this front - the best ones have finely cut meat and are served piping hot. Sometimes their meat is served a bit too cool and a bit too large, making for an uncomfortably chewy experience. On the plus side, the tables have pickled vegetables for your snacking enjoyment, and they definitely serve alcohol right to the edge of last call. If you live in the neighborhood and you are looking somewhere to go (or are leaving a show at the Congress theater and are willing to put up with the crush of people who will also have the same idea as you), this is definitely a safe bet for a good stop on the way home. read more

So, disclaimer: I came here with some friends around 2 am. Yea that's late (so food may not have been at optimal quality). Yea I had some drinks prior to coming here (but I was sober when I got here!). This place is pretty decent. 2 bucks a Taco is pretty decent. I had a lengua and a chorizo taco and an (ill-advised) flan. While some of my friends had the burritos. The lengua meat was just a slab, which I thought was interesting, but it was decent, if lacking a tad flavor. Chorizo was crumbly and had decent flavor, but didn't have a textural kick to it that I've enjoyed at other establishments. Flan... well, it was obviously not made in-house and was had a stronger cinnamon flavor. My friends laughed at me for getting it, and I had to ask for it twice because I'm pretty sure they thought that no way could this dude actually want one. Well, they were wrong, but I did get a lot of grief for the fact that it cost more than a taco. Overall, for the price and the food you get, I'd say it's a decent spot that definitely works in a pinch, and possibly more if you're just looking for decent Mexican food. read more

This place was POPPIN when I came. Of all the taco places, we chose this one because it had such great Yelp reviews. We were definitely not disappointed even though it was busy. It was interesting to see how fast they moved to seat you as I'm sure they're use to being super busy so even though we had to stand in a line when we arrived we got seated fairly fast. The review itself would be 4 stars except the service was not that great. Again, I could probably attribute that to the sheer volume of customers but we did have to repeatedly ask for water or other things that we saw other tables getting automatically. The food itself was amazing - the tacos tasted very authentic and delicious. It was cheap as well so it's a win/win situation! I would 10/10 come back and hopefully at a less busy time! read more
