Found this place driving through Lumberton and it was so good! The yelp reviews lead me here and I'm glad I stopped. Cheapest lunch ever! My husband and I each ordered 3 tacos and the bill was $11. This place looks like an adventure - it was so good!! The outside is a bit sketchy but seems like that's bc the locality doesn't prioritize upkeep of the area (right off the highway). Inside is not at all fancy; but it's clean and a well run operation. Quick and polite service (the young man at the register was super helpful), easy menu, and good tacos. Molcajetes was my first experience in finding true authentic Mexican food in out-of-the-way places. At first I was intimidated because the outside of the building wasn't great looking. And the inside wasn't great looking either. And they didn't speak English. And the menu above the counter didn't show sizes or explain the food very well. But we forged ahead. I got some tacos and they were fantastic. I've since ordered several different things, all of which were very good. I've also learned that if I took their recommendations for what veggies to put on the tacos--say yes to everything--the results were fantastic. In a way, this place changed my life. I now look for Mexican food in the worst looking buildings and find the best food. Since my first visit, I've become much more familiar with their offerings and know what to order and they usually have staff that speak English. If you go and can't figure out the menu, just order anything. Start small if you have to and go back for more if you've under-ordered. I never get to go there anymore when I'm in town because relatives don't like Mexican food. One day I'm going to visit Lumberton and not tell anyone so I can eat at Molcajetes every meal. read more

They speak more Spanish than English and there is no "combination platter" I had tacos with carnitas and the meat was delicious and moist. The boys had burritos and cleaned their plates. For drinks we had pineapple water - they had several other choices. I saw several brown skin young men tucking into bowls of Caldo De Camaron and they had menudo (tripe stew) on the menu for those feeling adventurous. Finding this place is weird. Just came here from Michigan with my partner who is also a Mexican cook. He can just tell what everything has in it eTc and I just love to eat haha. The food was so good!! Loved it. The staff was nice as well. The only disappointing thing was the mess. It was really messy the 3 times we had went... I know it's not really staffs fault as it's the customers who put their own dressings/ toppings but maybe having someone do it for them is a better option just bcs they have flies on there and it doesn't look to good when they get on the horchata/agua frescas or the salsas. But the food is 10/10 gonna keep going just think a little more cleaning is needed. read more

Awesome authentic Mexican food. Stopped off 95 Ina Monday night. Full menu wasn't available but still had some amazing options. The barbacoa pork sope was the best. The tortilla was crispy and super flavorful. The asada steak quesadilla was also really good. Lots of steak and melty queso fresco cheese in a grilled homemade tortilla. The taco was good but not as flavorful as the other offerings. Once each plate is served up you can add all kinds of additional toppings. The grilled onions and jalapeño peppers were awesome as we're all the salsas and sauces. I really liked the green salsa and the milder hot sauce option that was avocado based. The red sauce was super flavorful and quite spicy. The red pico de gallo was also really good. Beans were super tasty too. Staff was all bilingual and incredibly helpful. I did need a good bit of guidance regarding the menu but they helped me a lot and had good recommendations. Like the other Yelp reviews mention, this place does lack heavily in the ambiance but certainly makes up for it with the authenticity. A must stop!! read more

No prices inside, but I think burritos, quesadillas, & sopas are $2 & tacos & tortas $1.75. The carnitas were well cooked, but bland. The tripe, which I asked to avoid, was goopy. The kids loved it. Carne asada good, but bland. Lengua overboiled, again, bland. Ears? PERFECT. Crispy. Delicious. Chorizo, again good, but bland. The tomatillo sauce was really salty, the the chipotle one, again, bland. Would I return? ABSOLUTELY! For $15.05, we got 8 tacos. We doubted that we would be able to find anything in Lumberton, so it was a surprise to find great Mexican food place in this Southern city. The tocas shells are made in house and were perfect. We just happened by the area while traveling and and saw this place on Yelp. It sounded interesting so we gave it a try. WOW!!! My wife and I both had the steak Torta. It was the best meal of our vacation. The steak was marinated with garlic and other spices and served on a large warm bun much like pita - warm, puffy and slightly moist. There were sauces with hot peppers and onions to add even more flavor. We were the only caucasions there. Obviously a place that local Latinos frequent. They barely spoke English. Very authentic. By far the best taco place I've ever been to in my entire life (and I've been to many!). The price is very cheap, and food quality is easily 10/10. This is better than Taco Bus, Bar Taco, and every Mexican restaurant I've been to. I got the al pastor, lengua, and buche tacos. I came back for seconds after I ate my first order. The flavor is so delicious, the meat edges are cooked to a perfect crisp. The tortillas are hand made. There's a topping bar where you can add your own lime, onions, cilantro, pineapple, salsa, etc. I can't wait to return to this hidden gem on my road trip back home. Excellent Mexican food! Very close to the food in Mexico which is refreshing since it's very hard to find authentic Mexican food. Prices are great and the pastor and carne asada was good. The sopes were excellent. The dough was made fresh on the spot and that really sets it apart. We had the quesadilla and also the tortas and both were good. Unfortunately we came late and they ran out of the barbacoa and the other stuff they had but that means that it must good if it ran out. Unfortunately we live in another state if not we would give it another try for sure. Highly recommend going there if your driving by I-95 on a road trip. Very authentic and delicious Mexican food just off I95. The setting is somewhat rough, but it's fun to watch soccer games with Spanish-speaking announcers. Best Authenic Mexican Restaurant I've ever had. I've never had a real mexican taco on a corn tortilla until I ate here with a local friend. Everything is fresh and even the drinks are authenic so don't expect a coke or pepsi! There is also a mini bar to add toppings. There is no waiter service so it is self service to diners. Parking can be horrible and they have days in which they are closed. The atmosphere is not at all updated and it is old and worn but the food though definitely gets my stamp of approval! read more

Very authentic Mexican food. You may want to bring a Spanish-English dictionary if you speak English and a Spanish-German dictionary if you speak German. You will not find strong non-Spanish skills from the staff. While this is intimidating for me being only uni-lingual, they do have large color pictures of some of their choices. This is great for the "point and pay" strategy of ordering. The staff was friendly and again, the food was authentic and tasty. If they wanted to attract more folks like me they would put a bilingual person at the register, but really, my guess is that this is not what they are going for and frankly, they had a pretty steady stream of people coming in to order so they probably don't see value in appealing to the public at large. I will be happy to return when I become ambassador to Mexico, until then I will go for more convenient establishments. read more

More important, the food-as authentic as it could be -and at such a reasonable cost. We asked for help and lovely young lady who was server was more than willing to walk us through the menu. This place is great. Yelp led me here on the way back from Wilmington earlier this year and from now on it will be a must stop when passing through. In fact on the most recent stop I wasn't quite ready for dinner, but didn't care. The menu is small but everything is good. Some of the best street tacos I've had. There's a bar with all kinds of fixings- grilled onions and peppers, grilled pineapple, limes, raw onions, cilantro, beans, cabbage, many salsas, other stuff i don't remember.... So no matter what you get, you can go fix it up at the bar to your liking. Very authentic, good mexican food.
