We received chips and salsa upon arrival, but not any waters for a little bit. When we asked for more chips we didn't get any. When the food arrived. My plate was missing and I am currently waiting for it right now. I'm watching the rest of my friends eat awkwardly waiting for my meal. Chips still haven't came. The manager came to check what the deal was and he immediately went to solve the problem. I got my plate about 8 minutes later and he made sure I was happy. Great job handling it by the manager. There was a lot of miscommunication throughout the whole experience that had an impact on the rating. The food after I got it was delicious. I'll definitely make another visit. We just moved here and have been to this restaurant 3 times already. Love it!!! We're from Chicago, so we've had our fair share of authentic Mexican food. Everything we've had here so far has been delicious and flavorful. The tamales are fluffy, which I've never had before here. I crave them. The notes: - they are NOT on doordash, so you will need to call and order. - they get busy, fast. I'm sure it's overwhelming to the servers, the bartender, and the kitchen. Be prepared to wait when you sit. Enjoy the time to look at the amazing ambiance while you wait, because you will be glad you did wait. After work the gang wanted to do Taco Tuesday, and hey.............since I'm not from these parts of the mid-west I'd figure I'd give the Mexican fare a shot out here in Wisconsin. Having Mexican food is one of my favorite things, as I've eaten more than my share of Mexican fare when I worked all over Southern California, so my Mexican grindages standards possibly might be on the snobby side. Lol! Located in downtown Watertown, Wi. you can find this Mexican joint called - Taqueria Maria's. The restaurant itself looks very festive, as the very colorful interior is something to behold! We had a very large party (about 15 peeps), and I'm pretty sure we did not make any reservations in advance, but the restaurant staff was more than happy enough to accommodate our large party..........much MAHALO! After the Taqueria Maria's staff put a few tables together, our large party was seated, then menus & water were dropped off.........shortly after, baskets of fresh hot tortilla chips and (2) types of salsa was dropped off at the table. After looking over the menu I decided to give the Chiles Rellenos a try. The Chiles Rellenos dish, you got - (2) poblano peppers stuffed with your choice of: cheese, chicken, or shredded beef, and it was topped with Ranchera sauce. With this meal, you got rice, beans, & a salad. What can I say about the grub? Overall, the food here was just okay..........I've had much better in Southern California, but I guess for Wisconsin standards it's "okay". I found the rice & beans to be quite bland tasting, and the poblano peppers were rather on the small side......food wise, I would say a solid "3". I only bumped up a star for this place because the staff at Taqueria Maria's was very nice to accommodate our large party, and they took care of our special request. Service - Not sure if the staff was overwhelmed by our large party, but at times service appeared to be rather slow, but like I said before..........we had a lot of folks in our party, so it's probably understandable. Would I come back here in the near future for more Mexican grub? Sure, why not..........they do have quite a large menu, maybe worth it to give something else a try? read more

the lomo de res is absolutely disgusting. when i called to complain about how inedible the food was all they could say was that there was nothing they could do. even the manager admitted to not being able to eat it due to it being so spicy. my question is, why would you sell this greasy and spicy dish if the MANAGER couldn't even eat it. the meat was hard and overcooked. the meal comes with beans and rice but common sense must've been lacking when they decided to put in a tin container with no dividers. the sides were covered in greasy slop so i couldn't even eat that instead. business must be bad if they couldn't afford to remake my meal. they told me that the only way they would do it was if i rebought it. read more

I want to start off by saying that the food here was quite delicious as well as my Miami vice drink. However, this was quite possibly one of the worst experiences my husband and I have had out at a restaurant. We walked in to this restaurant at 330pm and left at 530pm which is only due to us requesting the bill. Who knows how much longer we would have been waiting if we didn't! When we first walked in it took 10 minutes to order our food and another 20 minutes to get any drinks/chips. After this point, we waited for 60 minutes for our food to be delivered. My husband and I both got the super creamy burrito and the food was not hot, more Luke warm. During our wait, many of the wait staff was MIA so we did not get a second basket of chips (and I believe you are able to have more than one basket as we watched other tables get another basket after requesting), nor were we able to get any refills on our drinks. After finishing what we could from our meals we waited another 30 minutes for our waitress to show us any attention. We had to flag down some other people from the wait staff (when we were able to) in order to get a box and the bill. Mind you, the restaurant was not at full capacity and not very busy. We are also not ones to complain but we did give our waitress more than enough time to attend to us while we were dining here. TM's is a few blocks off the main drag through town, but not inconvenient. There's a large parking area in what feels like the rear, but the door in was really hard to open. The staff was welcoming, and we were seated quickly. Which shouldn't be unusual since the place was almost empty at 16:30 on a Sunday. We asked about a beer list, but the server said they hadn't made it onto the menu, added there were just bottled beers ... but then made no effort to say which kinds of beer they had. Turned out they did have our usual Mexican food go-to, Modelo Negra. They came frosty cold, without a glass, but with a large lime chunk stuck in the mouth. A basket of chips arrived quickly, with two salsa dishes: a tasty green tomatillo type, and a bland tomato sauce type. After ordering, it took a good half hour for our dinners to arrive, which is crazy seeing as how there were only a few diners in the house. After plowing through one basket of chips ... we'd been in the field all day and had just nuts and seeds for lunch ... we started into a second. So by the time our dinners arrived, our beers were empty, and we weren't all that hungry anymore. Which detracted significantly. "A" had a cheese enchilada dish for $11.99 which came with three small enchiladas, so-so rice, and unspectacular refried beans. Despite the long wait, it was only lukewarm on arrival. Instead of the tasty green table salsa, it had a less tasty green sauce dumped all over the enchiladas. I ordered a taco combo for $9.95 with three street-sized tacos on store bought corn tortillas. I tried the Barbacoa, Carnitas, and Al Pastor fillings. All tasted good and were reasonably authentic. But the Al Pastor was too dry and crispy. My tacos came with the same so-so rice, and unspectacular refried beans. The bill was presented and settled without much delay. Will we return? Maybe if we're in Watertown really needing food, and if nothing else is open. But we wouldn't go very far out of our way. read more

Food was excellent! Husband and I stopped on our way through town after reading other yelp reviews. I had the 3 taco dinner and was able to select 3 different meats!! Shredded beef was my fav, then shrimp and 3rd was shredded pork. All delicious! Husband had the fajita burrito- HUGE! He took 1/2 home. We would highly recommend and will be going again. Outside of building is rather drab but don't be fooled, inner decor is charming and super cheerful! Hand carved, hand painted furniture throughout is delightful. Taqueria Maria's is bright inside with unique decor on the tables and chairs. Our group of 7 came here on a Saturday evening for dinner. While we were seated promptly, they seemed to be either understaffed or disorganized. Our server passed by twice saying she would be right with us. It took a good 30 minutes for our food to arrive. Our server told us there had been some issue in the kitchen that delayed everyone's orders. My husband noticed another group of equal size who arrived after us getting their food before us. That is usually a bad sign but then our food came out less than 5 minutes later. My husband and I found the food to be edible but unimpressive. For example, his chimichanga had too much tortilla, not enough filling, and was only lightly fried. They gave me the wrong flavor margarita but I drank it anyway. But other members of our group thought their food was just fine. Portion sizes were decent and prices reasonable for the area. Service overall was fair--not horrible but not great either. They have a large menu so it may be worth a return visit next time we are in town. read more

Hidden Gem turns into new favorite Mexican spot ! Always love when a Mexican restaurant starts off the experience with complimentary chips and salsa . The chips were warm and served with two home made salsas . One was mild and one was hot. Our chip craving could only be filled by cheese , so we ordered the cheese dip . It was served hot and in quite a large quantity . Their menu is set out pretty straight forward . Unlike the majority of Mexican restaurants that have a mish mosh of food you pair together to make a meal - Maria's has meals clearly set out . If you do wish to try a variety of things you can order a meal and order the other items as add ons. The staff was flexible to find a meal that works for everyone . They have all your Mexican favorites as well as other options ( kids meal, Cuban sandwich etc. ) They also serve breakfast ! I ordered the tamales( they are served as chicken ) which came served wrapped in leaves . There's two of them and I could only finish one and took the other home ! First tamale I've had in a restaurant that was moist and not dried out ! Very very authentic . Great flavor of rice and beans as well . My boyfriend got the beef enchiladas , served with the red sauce( a green sauce is offered as well) . Amazing flavor and just like my tamales amazing size . His came with rice and beans as well . I would defiantly go out of my way to come here again . Everything was served hott and fresh . The service was just excellent . I would have left 4 or 5 stars a week ago since all my previous meals were terrific but a couple days ago I had the fish fry and it was actually terrible. I couldn't even chew the fish it was so tough and the taste was poor. Also, they raised their prices which I get since good prices are going up everywhere but these were huge jumps...20-30% which is very steep. read more

We love the food here. We've gone to Mexico several times, and the food here really reminds us of Mexico. The servings are very large, and I always take over half of my dinner home, and it turns into 2 other lunches! The steak chimichanga is amazing. The salsas that they bring to the table are great! One is really too mild, and the other is too hot. So, we mix them and get the perfect blend. They are happy to bring out more if we run out. Recently they just bought new tables and chairs that are carved and hand painted with brightly colored Mexican themes. It really adds to the atmosphere! I would love to leave a 5/5 review because the food is so good, and the wait staff are so friendly, however, the service is inconsistent. It is normally very good service, but 1 time they forgot to make our dinner, and after an hour, we asked when our food would be coming, to which they replied, "Wait, what did you order again?", they had obviously lost our order, so had to start all over. Recently, we ordered the steak chimichangas, and chicken chimichangas were delivered. When we pointed it out to them after a few bites, they asked us if it was OK to keep them, or should they make new ones for us. They gladly made new ones, as it clearly was their mistake, but then we had to wait longer. We also try to watch our sugar intake, and we cannot find many options on the menu for beverages that do not contain sugar. Coffee is on the menu, but when you ask for it, you are told the coffee pot is broken, it has been broken for over a year! read more

I had called early in the day and they told me they would be open until 8pm. They just turned 5 of away and 3 more just after us. My fiancé' and myself were looking for a early evening quick bite on a Sunday and have had takeout from Maria's during covid shutdown which was pretty decent. Unfortunately, our Sunday trip was very different. The service was okay and people were pretty friendly however treated you as if you were also a number. Unfortunately the food was like Mexican cafeteria food. Chips were stale, guacamole was bland as well as the rice and beans. The beans were cold. The lime on the rocks margaritas tasted like a lime popsicle and were bright green which I have never seen before. The carnitas was dried out and the corn tortillas were soggy with grease. Needless to say we will never be returning. I wish I had better things to say and that it was just an off day for them, but we were extremely disappointed. read more

I always like chips and salsa to munch on while I wait, but they were a little stingy with the chips, which just meant they had to refill them for us more often. The salsa was good, and the green salsa was a little too spicy for my family. I had the fajita burrito with steak and substituted queso for the usual sauce in top, and it was very good. Not what I expected! We came in for a single day to visit family and took to yelp to find a place for dinner. First of all, I reside most of the year in California. I have a certain perspective of authentic and good Mexican food. After eating mostly fried food for the previous few weeks while in Wisconsin, I had to at least try this unexpected eatery. Initial impressions... run away! I felt like I was walking into a mistake. The place was awkwardly un-mexican. The place has the feel of a old family bar restaurant that ran out of business in the 80's. The town of Watertown has a similar feeling as well. Old, dying communities in WI are not uncommon. The downtown is a relic of the 50's and 60's and one gets the feeling that if one more business in town closes... there will be nothing left. When we sat down, we were given the menus... but the problem is, these menus are disorganized and overly simple that our group briefly thought we should leave. The fact that we were already eating chips and salsa kept us from walking out. Second impressions... the waitress was unable to take our order because we didn't speak English. I thought this should be alarming but then realized the young lady was simply trained to deliver water and take simple (beer) drink orders. In retrospect, she maybe is part of the family / family community. Either way, the realization is you are eating at a real Mexican restaurant. Third impressions... the menu is not the menu! When a second waitress arrived to take our order, we balked and asked if they had shrimp as well as other off menu items. The answer was YES, whatever we wanted (in the context of it being Mexican) we could get). We ordered cheese enchiladas and shrimp fajitas off the menu. We were told most regulars simply order what they want! Forth impressions... the food is exceptional! At one point, the waitress apologized for the delay saying they cook everything fresh. The wait from ordering to eating was maybe 10 minutes. The food was fresh and full of flavor. My wife and I both commented that the food tastes were of higher quality then any place we frequent back home in California. The guacamole was a great example of quality food prepared on the spot. It was not store bought and removed from a package... like you might consider. It was home-made and better than that! The chef here has a special talent and should be acknowledged! Total bill for 7 people came to $75. Are you kidding? This is a steal. I cant help but feel this is a great place to consider eating at. My only complaint is that I was only visiting for a day. If I lived within a 40 minute drive I would go out of my way to eat here on a regular basis. read more
