Walk up taco stand behind a carniceria. Taco prices range from $1.35 to $1.65 each. Classic and simple, served with onions and cilantro, plus delicious grilled onions on the side. The carnitas taco was good. The chicharron was fun. The barbacoa and al pastor were outstanding. This is one of the few South Nashville taco trucks/stands I've found that serve their al pastor with small pineapple chunks (and likely marinate the pork in pineapple juice). The taco wasn't too sweet, though - the balance was just right. The green chile salsa they serve alongside the tacos is texturally somewhere between a pureed salsa and a crema. On its own, it's pretty spicy. On top of the tacos, along with a squeeze of lime, it's perfect. Don't sleep on San Luis. It took a few visits to realize there was something good also happening at the other end of the main entrance to Carniceria San Luis. It took a few more visits for the perfect storm to form, that is, me being hungry at the same time I am at the carniceria. The menu is simple: a variety of tacos and other hand-carried food. In other words, no soups or platters. The tacos were the small kind that you would get if you were in Mexico and I had no problem with that. The Lengua (tongue) was rich, hearty and served topped with wilted onions. The Pastor (seasoned pork) was sweet, tender, and yes, hearty. There are no seats, indoor or outdoor. You simply walk up to the window, knock politely if they don't notice you standing there, order, pay and wait until your brown-bagged order is ready to take away. I've been searching for some decent tacos in the Nashville area and found this place. I ordered the carne asada tacos, and they were pretty good. The price of the tacos were a bit expensive since they're smaller. The grilled onions gave the tacos a really yummy flavor, along with a hint of lime juice and a little of the salsa verde. I don't think I'm alone here, but I harbor the constant and insatiable desire to find that gritty hole in the wall, the deepest dive and the most inaccessibly authentic food truck, taqueria, and pho spot. Finding this place as I sat starving in a Citgo on the way back to Atlanta is why I have so many hearts for yelp. It's right off the exit, the smoke hits you about a block after turning onto Harding. I've had this place bookmarked for what seemed like YEARS. I've passed by this place a million times and always see the smoke billowing into Harding Pike. We'd never made it here as to we always find a place to go to sit down & eat. Today, we stopped by for a little snack in between lunch & dinner. We turned into the parking lot & realize this little area is a popular place. We we lucky enough to find a marking stop around the back of what I think is a minimart. Like I said before, there isn't a place to dine in here. You order at a little window in the wall. You'll also pickup there. They've got a shelf along the wall for you to stand & eat if you like, but it was about 93 degrees when we went, so we decided to eat in the car with the ac on blast. The menu is straightforward as most of the taco trucks, taco stands, taco windows are here in Nashville. We decided on a grande quesadilla chicken ($6.50) & a pork meat taco ($1.35). The service wasn't the friendliest, at all, but fast. The quesadilla was a nice size. The chicken seemed dry to me. Not much cheese. I ate about one & a half of them & then found a piece of bone with concerned me. I had a couple more bites & found a hard piece of gristle. That ended it for me. The pork taco was also very dry. Not much flavor at all. After all these years, I'm glad to remove this from my bookmarks. In my opinion, I think there's better options located down the road on Nolensville. read more

I really liked the chicken meal next door but since this is about the tacos, this is what I will be reviewing. I got the chicken taco for me and my mom and boyfriend both got different other types of tacos. The corn tortilla was very very dry, more dry than usual and the taco itself was...okay. Maybe we ordered the wrong thing or they were having an off day but I didn't see what the hype was about sadly. It was just really crumbly. I drove by the huge steaming smokers outside the carcineria, and after driving another couple miles, drove back. It was too eerily enchantingly not to at least investigate, and it kind of turned out to be a highlight of the visit to Nashville. The smokers and the huge chicharone cases were awesome. And then at the little window around the side (the 'taqueria'), the $1.35 tacos were great! I got pastor and lengua, but they also have a nice variety including tripe, and chicharone in a green sauce. Delicious, and adding the big floppy pieces of grilled onion to the little chunks of raw onion made for really satisfying flavor. A great bite out in the anonymous outskirts of N'ville. read more

Ugh, what a disappointment. Not only were my Pastor and Asada tacos on old, hard tortillas, but the meat was grossly overcooked and in portions so small it was laughable. I'm from LA, I understand that street tacos are small- but I'm not exaggerating when I say there was a tablespoon or less of meat on each taco. The onions and cilantro were dried out, and the limes were so old they had no juice to squeeze out. The woman that took my order wasn't friendly at all, but I wrote it off until I went next door and got the exact same level of treatment from the staff of the carniceria. I ordered rice and beans at the hot bar and received dry rice and a greasy meat consume with a handful of beans sunken at the bottom. I then went home, ate, and immediately threw it up. I don't know what I was expecting, the store was filthy. Every step of this experience was the worst and I would not go back or recommend it.
