The taqueria cart / truck scene in Houston is among the city's most ubiquitous food options, which might be why Taqueria Tacambaro is both popular and overlooked at the same time. Located primarily near the parking lot of the Houston Farmer's Market, they're a solid destination for street side Mexican without the pretension. Tacos isn't the the only barometer, but it's a way to start. Admittedly I'm not a huge fan of the shredded lettuce with tacos (#1) but the meats are almost always the star of the show. I'm pleased to see that they utilize a number of beef cuts from the Houston-centric fajita (#2), asada, and even bistec. The latter was a tad saltier than I would have liked, which was really more of a cecina (salted). I don't have high opinions on the chicken (pollo) and pork (pastor), which I find to be some of the most boring choices on the menu. What Tacambaro really excels at is the rest of the parts: tripa (tripe), lengua (tongue), chicharron (rinds), buche (belly) and mollejas (sweetbreads). The latter was the real surprise and I can see why so many locals would want to come here for it. The mollejas are crispy, delightful, and full of flavor. With their tortillas and a little kick of the salsa, I can see how along with chicharron and lengua can become a specialty place in a hurry. It's not all rosas in this cart. Sometimes they're a bit in a rush and a lot of times the cart isn't actually around during its open hours. While it's supposedly open till 3pm, I've seen it gone just after lunch time. Even when it it is open, some of those choices are sold out in addition to some of the most expensive. Tacos are not the end-all, but I do appreciate their versatility with creating tortas, gorditas, flautas, and quesadillas. It's a cash only business to my knowledge and there are ATMs in the market, as well as places to sit. I would always make the effort to patronize Tacambaro, and hope any more do. __________ (#1) Tacos dorado? Fine. Maiz taco that's barely grilled? Eh. My boyfriend and I stopped by Taqueria Tacambaro on our ten taco tour of Houston and even amidst a stuffed itinerary of some of the best tacos in town, this stand stands out in my memory. I took the leap and ordered the mollejas (sweet breads/thymus gland) while my boyfriend got al pastor for his less adventurous stomach. For anyone on the fence about trying the mollejas, do it! The women here really know how to tame the earthy flavor that usually accompanies organ meats. The taco had some nicely rendered crispy fatty bits, like a perfectly cooked pork belly, with a crispy surface and just enough gelatinous chewiness. There is just a hint of the rich earthiness of the mollejas that emerges without overwhelming the taco. Best of all, you can watch them make gorditas and heat up tortillas on the griddle while you eat. The gorditas looked so wonderfully crispy and the woman working the griddle masterfully splits them in half with a swift slice. I was so tempted to get a gordita, but sadly, our tour was tacos only and I needed to save room for several more on our journey. I'll definitely be back for some more mollejas and some of the tripas -- next time in gordita form. I love that this stand serves up some more unique meats that don't usually make the menu at taco trucks. Order up some lunch here, and spend some time looking around the farmers market afterwards! read more

I came here on a Saturday, and it was so good I came back the very next day! The gorditas are something special! I've tried the tacos and gorditas with beef fajita, chicken, and pastor. ALL are delicious! Also, I'll admit I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to eating animal intestines, but you need to try the sweet breads (mollejas) here. For $2 you can't go wrong, right? Give something new a try without wasting $20 at some fancy restaurant. A few chunks of this meat ended up on my taco plate, and it was divine! I'll definitely get a taco or two of mollejas when I return next. Honestly, I think the best thing about this little truck is how golden brown and crispy they get the edges of the meat or the gorditas, while still maintaining the tender center. Both the green and red salsas they offer are really flavorful! The red one is super spicy though, so watch out! Definitely stop here on your next trip to the farmer's market. The best way to get there is either to walk OR drive up the alley/aisle on the far south side (closest to Service Street) of the farmers market, and you can likely find parking right by the truck. Whenever I stroll around the market, this is often one of my stops. A few of the great qualities this food truck has going for it includes being located in a bustling market with hungry folks, and the menu has a nice variety of items and meats. The popular protein to order seems to be the sweetbreads if you're into that, but there's a host of other mysterious yummy meaty offerings. On my last visit the chicharron and pastor tacos were okay but could have been more tender. They were out of the barbacoa. Boo. There is a slight language barrier going on as my espanol is pretty craptastic, but they'll understand enough to help you make your order. Don't forget to top your food with one of the two different homemade salsas! There's no seating in the area whatsoever, but you stand at the side of the truck to eat on the built in ledge. Was around this side of the area and got a gordita craving. Thanks to yelp, I ended up here. Now keep in mind this food truck is inside the market area (on the back side), I kept looking around for it and couldn't find it until I looked towards inside the market area. I ordered a fajita gordita without onions and cilantro. It was soooooo good!! The lady left the tortilla very crunchy, it was one of the best gorditas I've had. I was so tempted to try their Tortas too but I knew I wasn't going to be able to eat it, so I will definitely have to go back. The fajita was well cooked and it was the actual meat (a lot of places leave a lot of the fat in the meat and I'm not a fan of that). In my youth, the extent of my exposure to Mexican food included Taco Hell, the weekly enchilada tray in grade school, and maybe a rare visit to Ninfa's for the obligatory fajitas. I was scarred. (Though I still harbor delusions of one day sneaking back into Alief Middle School to stuff my face with chili and cheese-topped fried burritos. But then, that's not really traditional Mexican food, is it?) I grew up, nary touching anything remotely Mexican/Tex-Mex, until I discovered taquerias - and that the food in said establishments did wonders for a booze-filled belly, not to mention tasting like the real thing. And so the scars receded a little. Located in the Southeast corner of the parking lot behind Canino's farmer's market, I was introduced to the Tacambaro taco truck through a Robb Walsh review in The Houston Press. Two words caught my attention and my eyes grew large with intrigue. Mollejas (sweetbreads) y tripitas (tripe). I have an unusual affection for organ meats - intestine, gizzard, heart, stomach, liver, tongue... so seeing those two things on the menu, "I was as happy as a little giiirl." (TM Sprockets) I immediately notice that everything is crazy fresh. The organ meat is cut and fried on premises. The masa flour for gorditas is patted around and slapped on the griddle two seconds after order. This is no-frills, fast food done right. Rolled up in between two piping-hot corn tortillas (flour is for suckers) with diced onion, cilantro, and freshly squeezed lime juice, the mollejas were pretty damn good. Slightly charred bits mingled with fluffier bits, the sweetbreads had barely a hint of the typical offal flavor. And to be honest, I kind of missed it. So thank goodness I ordered the soft and chewy tripe, because it was packin' a nice heap of offal-ness (not to be confused with awfulness). $8.50 for four tacos and a half liter of a citrus-y soft drink called Refresco, it wasn't as cheap as I thought it would be. Although I didn't find the sweetbreads and tripe as revelatory as Walsh, you could hardly do worse than organ meat tacos for a late-morning breakfast. read more

Tacos tacos tacos. Corn corn, double corn! Wow, this was a fantastic experience for me, and the best tacos I've had yet. My first suggestion would be to try their al pastor with cheese. They use the GOOD STUFF. Wash it down with a grapefruit soda, and you'll be golden. Fajitas also come highly recommended. Green sauce over red to get a fresh crispness with your food, or the chipotle red for some smoky goodness. This is the real deal people. First things first here. The truck is behind the market of this address. Can get hella lost if not comprehending this. So It's my brother's birthday today, and like any classy brother I said, "let's go get tacos." Zing--the hunt was on! So yes, a nice stroll through the market on the way to Tacambrano seems like a perfect prelude to this taqueria. If you catch them while busy, ordering could be confusing, but well worth the task. Well, and if you bring your parents along for the b-day lunch who don't understand your fascination with meal on wheels, it adds to the chaos. I digress. We ordered a whole lot of everything within the frenzy of the crowd. The tacos are excellent, but the stars for me here are the Gorditas, made fresh. Maza in a bowl, cranking these beauties out. . . it really is a thing of consummate beauty. All the meats are good that I had, which included: al pastor, fajita, chicharron, buche and lengua. The lengua is the only one I wasn't crazy about. The chicharron, with it's "I'm going to be so bad for your health" demeanor is my champion. So greasy, so so good. . . . Anydoodles. Check em' out! When it comes to tacos, how does this not warrant five stars? I had tripe, sweetbread, and pastor, all were basically the best I've had and I eat tacos almost daily. The difference from this place to the next is the richness in the seasoning. I never had a Mexican style sweetbread and it was great, the tripe was the most tender meat of any taco, and the pastor was more rich than any I'd tried previously. Sweetbread tacos. Does that seem like an oxymoron? Sweetbreads are traditionally fancypants, high-end restaurant foods. It's the stuff most people don't even comprehend- "they're not sweet nor bready? what??" however, if you've tasted well-prepared sweetbreads, you know the delectable taste on your tongue when you bite into a crispy exterior, followed by smooth, almost-sweet interior... rich, soft, simply decadent. now imagine eating this in taco form. every texan should get into their SUVs and trucks and head over to Taqueria Tacambaro RIGHT NOW. b/c this stuff is good. at $2 a pop (heaping, generous amount of sweetbreads), you can't get much better than this. pour a bit of the dark red chili sauce on top and chow away. read more

I ended up at this taco truck after few minutes of grocery shopping at Canino's market. I stand in line, with only two other customers infront of me. They not only serve tacos: they have tortas, quesadillas, gorditas and some other items I just can't remember right now. I ordered two fajita tacos and one tripas (cow intestines I think). Lets start with the fajitas. Tasty not at all chewy but after one bite I was done with this taco. It had so much grease it was disgusting. I know Mexican tacos are greasy but this one was beyond greasy. Grease looked like it was some kind of salsa added to the tacos. I start with my second fajita taco, hoping it would be better but Nope it was same as the first one. I threw tacos to the trash (know Im feeling guilty.. throwing away food with all those hungry people out in this world). As for my tripa taco: only OK. Tripa was chewy not so greasy and with a lot of salsa and lemon it was ok to eat. Fast and friendly service which is why my two stars. I will come again and see if tacos are any better since it has pretty good previous reviews. I will update my review on my second visit. read more

I have been doing some taco research, and this place kept coming up as a must visit. I was not disappointed. They have mollejas (sweetbreads) available, which I had not seen before. They were delicious on my slightly crispy grilled corn tortillas, as was the lengua (beef tongue). The sweetbreads did were tender, fatty and not gristly. Tacos are cheap and service is fast. Standing in the mid day Houston summer sun to eat tacos, this place had better be legit. The lady who runs the little taqueria is beyond legitimate, she is a standard by which many should be judged: a Ruler. There is a wonderful menu of amazing flavors to explore. Some may not enjoy their tripas crispy, I do, little meaty crunchy tastiness bits. I hold her gordas as the gold standard. As Texas Monthly noted, molejas, this is the place to go. I always encourage new comers to open their horizon and explore, because it is worth it. Last time I swung through, it was a tad early so had a chorizo gorda, amazeballs. The place to get a fix of hard-to-find taco filling such as mollejas, tripitas, birria, lengua. It's a food truck, so be prepared to eat standing up (which is the better way - the tacos taste better when they're piping hot) or just get to-go order. Barbacoa and chicharon are great too, and don't forget to add queso to the tacos. Parking is free and you can wonder around the market before and after to get groceries or fruit dessert. Visiting Airline Drive has become a favorite outing on Saturday or Sunday. Today, while visiting the farmer's market, we ventured to the back and visited this trailer. We ordered a Beef Gorditas. Watching the delightful lady in the trailer making them was just as fun as eating them! Wonderful flavor! Served with a side of pico and a slice of avocado -- fresh, fresh, fresh! Can't wait to return. Finger food, no forks available. Enjoyed ours with a Mexican coke. It doesn't get much better. read more
