Amazing hole in the wall! There's additional parking across the street and additional seating in the little shed in front of the place. Smells great when you walk in and can even see the tortillas being freshly made. We were seated pretty quick and the staff was nice. The food was so flavorful and very authentic! Saw this place on local eats YouTube and wanted to come and see if it's really authentic Mexican FOOD! Cabrito and barbacoa are not easy to make and the love and time that it takes shows so let's see how it goes!!! First off!! My husband said "Está solo!!" Which means "empty spot" for us lol but I said nahhhh let's give it a try!! It's good that it's not packed lol so we can enjoy. We could see the lady "server" from the window getting ready with menus for us so that was very nice to see she was paying attention!! We ordered drinks: horchata and Mexican coke and OMG the horchata is on point! Just enough cinnamon and the rice flavor is amazing!!! Homemade for sure!!!! We asked for the queso fundido and chorizo as appetizer! Very creamy and cheesy!!! Chorizo is savory and the salsa they bring at the beginning with 2 flautas is super super spicy but delicious so try it out!! Homemade tortillas is a must!!!! Very thick and perfect size and flavor!!!! Waiting on the charola for 2 which comes with cabrito, barbacoa, flautas, consomé and refried beans and yummm nopales!!! We wanted to try both out so the lady advices to get this!!! Can't wait!!! OMG OMG OMG YESSS!! Don't regret it!! Don't be fooled by the bad reviews or the empty restaurant! This place is a gem!!! Authenticity is a buzz word that gets tossed around, some places play with it and others embrace it. El Hidalguense is one of the latter. If you want to have a taste of a homemade meal from a Mexican house, this is the best I've had in a while from a restaurant. Menu is in Spanish and English, but you might want to touch up on your Spanish prior to visiting. Mine is serviceable, if not always a bit rusty and I managed through a meal comfortably. Regardless of your duolingo score, the staff here is polite and friendly like you'd expect. Homemade tortillas are being made as you walk in, Univision is on the TV, and a table is easy to find. This is the vibe you get from authenticity. You come for the Cabrito here, a small barbecue goat that is simply seasoned and grilled to amazing crispness. It's kinda a luxury meal for my grandparents and the price reflects that a bit, around $30 for order of meat. It's best to order family style I'd say and just enjoy the Cabrito with the salsas and tortillas. Beans come with your order and taste like the beans we'd used to make on Sunday to have for the rest of the week. Nothing is perfect here but this place has had heaps of praise piled on it in the past and it's very worth it. read more

Popped by the other day when it was nice and cold outside for some type of soup to warm up and the waiter recommended Pozole. I had wanted to try their Menudo, which they serve everyday, and not just on the weekends, which is rare. But based upon his recommendation, I went forward and ordered the Pozole and WOW, it was OUTSTANDING! Check out the picture and see how rich the broth was! I've been wanting to go to this place for over a year now because they have Cabrito and that used to be my mother's favorite. my brother, my nephew and I. Kaitlyn excellent waitress Alberto bought us appetizers lil a flauta with a very good red sauce which my nephew loved I ordered a taco and fajita n trips and my brother ordered the nachos and my nephew ordered the enchiladas fajita. We also ordered chips and salsa. The chips and salsa were very good. Kaitlyn was very attentive thank you very good service and so was Alberto . We will to be going back. Had a Gordita, meat not sufficient to cover the Gordita. Their answer was only 4 oz of meat per $7 Gordita. Need smaller gorditas so they can fill with meat. Wish they weighed it. It wasn't 4 oz. Very authentic experience of the Mexican interior. Not for those who might be easily intimidated by unusual foods or different experiences. The night I went they were having Spanish language karaoke. A nearby table was eating what looked like the head of a goat. Ours was one of the few tables where English was being spoken. I felt like I was in Mexico and i loved it. read more

I went to this place for the famous barbacoa de Borrego/lamb. Barbacoa in Texas is usually made from beef. It is not easy to find barbacoa de borrego. I thought it would be too gamey but it wasn't bad. It was a little dry but with homemade tortillas and a spicy red salsa made it a lot better.I also ordered the Huasteca plate, which i have never heard of before and wanted to try something different. The Huasteca is a plate that consists of scrambled egg enchiladas in Huasteca sauce.It also includes a cecina steak which like a thin milanesa steak. The cecina steak and beans were very flavorful but the Huasteca enchiladas werent what I expected. Not bad but not great. There are other things on the menu like cabrito/goat that are not easy to find and are authentic Mexican classics. If you are interested in trying the barabacoa de borrego or some cabrito then give El Hidalguense a try. read more

This family restaurant has been a place that my family and I go to. The reason I'm giving this a one star is because I have worked in the industry before and it baffles me that the way that the owner of the restaurant, Señora Gudelia speaks to her staff . Not only does she speak to them in a condescending way, but she tries to shade them to fully disrespect them . I'm pretty sure that the workers are taking it because they really do need the job. I suggest that the store manager speaks to the owner on how to properly talk to the employees. Because at the end of the day they are the ones that make your restaurants run . It would be shame if the restaurant Were to allow the owner to continue to treat her people like this. I understand what it feels like to be in the weeds when it's a busy in a restaurant. But that's not the way to talk to the staff, also she needs it looks like she needs to be a little more organized. Four stars for the food but one HEAVY star because of the owner. I hope that whoever is running this account on behalf of the owner definitely lets her know. Because I will be coming back just to ensure that she knows to treat people with respect. If no one hasn't checked her trust me I will be the one to check her and let everyone in the restaurant know what is going on. Some people forget to be grateful to their staff and she should be definitely not talking to them in the middle of a pandemic like that. read more

GET THE BEEF CALDO! Alot of other places have more bone in the caldo than beef, but our order was soooo delicious and they were not stingy with the beef (which was so tender). Also, they have outdoor seating and have placed plastic shields at each table to help protect their customers during this pandemic. The barbacoa tacos we ordered lacked some seasoning, but we also ordered on a Friday night, so we may have missed the prime time to order these tacos. We will definitely return. read more

After reading some other friends reviews of this place I went for dinner one night recently. This is a low rent dining room in a run down strip center. However we all know that good food can be found in places like this. Inside there were only 3-4 other diners and a lot of empty tables. I snagged one and looked at the menu. I tried to ask a couple of questions to my waiter but he didn't speaka da english very well so he went and got a lady who works there who spoke a little English. I was tempted to order the cabrito but at $28 I didn't feel like taking the chance since I had never eaten here before so I went with the beef and chicken fajitas with flour tortillas and charro beans. Since this is a Mexican restaurant there were no chips and salsa :( The meal was good. Both meats were good along with the charro beans. I really had no complaints. It was a solid 3 meal. I would come back if I was in the area. When presented with the bill I noticed I was charged for the flour tortillas and have no idea why. It wasn't much (something like .65 cents)...but why? I would have asked but communication wasn't easy with my very limited Spanish. If I returned I might try the cabrito to see if it was worth it. I might if I ever come back. read more

This place is a hole in the wall in a dinky strip. Inside is pretty big, but super packed with tables. The tables are pretty though. At first glance, I was not overly impressed. A young man seated us and had a pretty good sense of timing for when to come take our order. The menu is slightly bizarre to me with prices ranging from 1.50 for a simple quesadilla to 10 for fajitas to like 50 for a meal or 100 for catering. They came out with some complimentary eggroll looking thing that may have been fried flautas? It was super fried and crispy and hard to chew, but tasted so yummy that I kept eating it. I like their horchata. I have no idea how much it cost because the menu had white outs all over. We got the cheese and chorizo appetizer with handmade tortillas. When it came out, I was surprised to see it wasn't like nacho cheese, but a that thick kind I only have ever seen at taco stands. And it was the bomb. I'd eat that EVERY single time. The tortillas we're too thick to me, with that bumpy stale porridge texture...but cheese makes everything okay. The pazole was do decent. I think it could have had a little more flavor in the broth, but the pork in it was tender. A quesadilla at this place is basically a tortilla folded in half, which explains the low price. I am not complaining though because it is very rich and filling for its size. The fajita beef in it was...great. like impressive flavor great. Probably the most flavorful fajita I have ever had. I ordered a torta with fajita beef as well. That was not great. I mean...technically the same meat right? But no. Not at all. Like it was like eating two different meats. Not a fan, would never get it again. At the end they brought out a complimentary plate of that arroz con something dessert. I've never had it before, but it tasted sweet and I enjoyed it. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised by this location. I would be very selective about what I ordered here, but I can see myself trying this place again. read more

I love El Hidalguense! My uncle was actually the one who told me about it (spring branch fam). We have loved vieng Thai and have been going for years, but never ventured over to El Hidalguense til this year. So happy we did! Favorite things: At lunch they make their own tortillas... and serve them the rest of the day! They are heavenly. You can also watch them making them during lunch too! Their salsa are homemade and they are delicious!!! I love to dip my tortillas in them. Plus you can actually buy the salsa to go, too, for at home. They also give out little flautas (complimentary) as an appetizer! Last time we were there, they also gave us a dessert of rice pudding with spices... (dinner service) and a little soup at the beginning too. So good! I seriously love this place!
