Seriously enjoyed Taqueria Toluca! From the start, the service was very nice and we felt welcomed. The chips and salsa were fresh and tasted homemade. My litmus for a good Mexican restaurant is their Menudo soup, and theirs was near perfect! The burrito pastor was also delicious, and my wife thoroughly enjoyed her chicken fajitas. I finally had gotten the chance to try out this establishment, only to be summed up in one word- disappointment. Firstfulfilled and foremost, I did acquire this from UberEats. While I may have overlooked the inaccuracy of my order, it didn't excuse it fully, entirely given the request for my meal was partially fulfilled. I had asked for a Torta de Milanesa (Breaded Steak) with just lettuce, tomato, avocado, and onions, only to receive the works, which adds jalepeños, beans, and sour cream. While I do not mind the first two, I'm not too fond of sour cream as it is my specific taste. The only thing Taqueria Toluca had gotten right aside from the protein was my request for the onions to be added to the order. As for the taste, while the order was finished and delivered promptly, I would have preferred if they had toasted my bread a bit more. On top of this, the flavors of the sandwich were rather unremarkable as it wasn't much special, nor did it stand out above the other tortas I have had in my life. I want to give this another try, but ultimately I am to reiterate discontent with this experience. read more

TRIGGER WARNING: DISCRIMINATION! UPDATE: Vic your non apology is NOT accepted. You telling me I FEEL I was discriminated against is called GASLIGHTING. You're putting the burden on me and DISMISSING FACTS as perspective when IN FACT it was discrimination on your employees part. They made the discriminatory comments, argued with me, and othered me by making me step aside to serve other seemingly non disabled people. You have the opportunity to learn from this instead of blaming others here. I am a disabled veteran who also happens to have a trained service dog for my disability. I have been here multiple times and never had a problem at this restaurant until tonight. Tonight I was told dogs were not allowed by the woman at the register. I informed her my dog is a service dog and she said she didn't care, they "don't have the permit." I informed her that the Americans with Disabilities Act is a federal law that requires access to public spaces for service animals. She said she didn't know about that and she had to ask her manager but that they "were about to close anyway." The server lady asked us if the people behind us were with us and if they weren't they (both counter and server lady) told us to move so they could serve them first (even though we were there first). At no time did she tell them they were about to close and they kept insisting that I move away because the other customers "might be afraid" of my service animal. I pointed out to both of them that this was DISCRIMINATION and the server told me "she didn't want to get involved" even though she was also making comments. Then the lady behind the counter told us we needed to sit away from the other people because again, my service dog MIGHT scare the other customers. Again, I told her she couldn't treat me differently than other customers because that is discrimination. Then she said they had the right to kick me out if my service dog barks or causes commotion. She then started only talking to my friend who was there with me and I had to tell her to talk to ME because I'm the disabled person who has the service dog. She REFUSED to even LOOK AT ME until my friend stepped away. I told her I've been here multiple times and she told me no I haven't because "she'd never seen me there." When I told her I'd been there in the mornings, she said "but not with the dog" and actually YES I HAVE. I am disabled. This is my service dog. Why would I not show up with her? She cut me off multiple times and even told me to "let her talk" never acknowledging that I'm the customer. I told her I would be speaking to the owner, whom I've met and have had a conversation with before in that restaurant WITH my service dog present and she told me "good luck, if he's ever here." I decided I didn't want to give them my business. This is NOT how you treat ANY customer. I'm the type of person that if I like a restaurant, I keep coming back and bring more clientele with me. Especially if it's to support la raza. It will not be the case with this place. read more

This place was great. We went on April 1, after our daughter graduated Navy bootcamp. She requested Mexican food, so being from out of State, I jumped on Yelp. This eatery deserves all its stars! We had tacos de carne asada, carnitas, and a torta ahogada. The meats were delicious! The tortillas were good too. l as a Child did enjoy my California burrito! But my parents were disappointed. My food was great it had guacamole, Crinkle cut fries and meat. My Mom had pozole! Her pozole was not traditional and tasted a little bland. She didn't have cilantro! The Hot sauces were not hot. The red hot sauce tasted like tomato's! The green sauce was not even spicy.My stepdad hated his food!! He said it tasted like they cut fat off the meat and put it on the grill.There wasn't spices on his taco he was disappointed and said this place was "BASURA!!" I had Al Pastor torta. It was AAAA-mazzing! They have a large menu to chose from. The staff is very friendly. They also offered complimentary chips and salsa. I also want to point out that their green salsa is AAAA-mazzing as well! Their staff is mostly spanish speaking but, they do understand English. BETTER then paying for Taco Bell-- please. Fake Tacos for more money or Real tacos for less money.... I take Real Taco's. SO I had El Pastor- Cecina, Arrerecha, and Asada. Delicious. I had a partner in this Taco adventure all together we had 7 tacos, order of guacamole and whatever that chaka white milk water thing is and came to 14.88$. I am pretty picky about space and don't like being uncomfortable, but it was not to bad, It is child friendly as far as accommodations and space. My son is Special needs, autistic and ALLERGIC to everything, I would not mind bringing him into this place as it was pretty clean and I would have no fear of him getting a crumb and dying because it is pretty clean. The restaurant is hard to notice on this street, it is small and quaint but enough room for the family to come, and you can see the cooks through windows cooking everything. I was in the North Chicago area and craving for some tacos. A quick Yelp search brought up Taqueria Toluca so I dragged the boyfriend along to check it out. We're not very familiar with the Waukegan area and had no idea what to expect when we pulled up. The place was empty but we sat down and ordered an assortment of tacos, ceviche tostadas and horchata. Everything was authentic and delicious. The ceviche was refreshing and spicy at the same time. They give you a lot of seafood for the price ($10 for 2 huge tostadas). The tacos we ordered were all surprisingly delicious too: al pastor, lamb barbacoa, asada, pollo, and fish. Even the horchata was good and you could tell it wasn't the fake powdered kind. We ended up spending way too much for lunch but we were given a lot of food: 2 ceviche tostadas, 8 tacos, 3 orders of horchata. Now that I've discovered Taqueria Toluca, I can honestly say it's my favorite spot for tacos in the 'burbs. read more

I have been to the one on 10th street and it is great for authentic Mexican food. Be warned that you will need to know some Spanish as the menu is written as such and the help only speaks broken English. Large diverse menu such as tacos, tortas, sopas, etc and in many meats such as beef, lingua, al pastor, etc. They even have some ceviche like octopus. Prices are very cheap and some individual item are only a buck or two. My favorite Mexican restaurant in Waukegan which is saying something in a city full of Mexican restaurants. read more

This place is my family's newest Christmas tradition: a Mexican Christmas. We aren't Mexican, but my stepmother doesn't like to cook on Xmas so we opted to try Toluca. For months my father has raved about their huevos rancheros, which I enjoyed very much on a previous visit. But the Xmas dinner was spectacular. The foundation of their delicious meals are homemade, handmade corn tortillas that come out fresh, warm and almost sweet. We started off with some guacamole that I was in danger of spoiling my appetite with, it was so good. I ordered shrimp fajitas, though I couldn't keep my hands off of another person's tortilla soup, which was rich with fresh chicken flavor, crunchy tortilla strips, cheese and soft veggies. My dish was just as good--seasoned perfectly and grilled to perfection, the shrimp were tender and succulent, the bell peppers sweet and savory. Wrapped up in one of those toritillas, along with some fresh salsa, made for a heavenly fajita. Waukegan is really off the beaten path for most Chicagoans, but the place is always packed with locals-a good a sign as any that this is the place to eat. read more

Great little dive taqueria. We come here sometimes when we are on our way to the Genesee Theater. They are quick, inexpensive, authentic, satisfying and delicious. My favorites include the Tostada de Ceviche and the Carne Asada Taco. They do a really tasty Ceviche. It is has a nice amount of acid that pairs perfectly with the sweetness of the fish. The tacos are classic and not at all Amercanized. Happy that they don't skimp on the meat and the veggies are only a complement. I like to top my taco with some of the three salsa that come to the table. None of the sauces are the classic fake Mexican chunky tomato salsas that you get some places. These are all super different and interesting. You have to give a try to figure out what you like. read more

Oh man, where do I begin. First off, we've been going to this SAME restaurant for the last 14 years. First time was in 2002, while stationed in Great Lakes. We moved around but have ALWAYS came back to eat here. Even when they had about three or so locations cause they were doing so well. The food is AWESOME!!!! Always happy & satisfied after eating here. It's crazy cause my wife and I were just dating the first times we went there. 14 years later, our son is even loving the place. If I could rate it higher, I would, so I'm rating 5 stars to the tenth power!!! Joking aside, the food here is really good. Real authentic, good prices, and makes you want to keep on coming back. I've only been to Toluca #2 on Washington (near Butrick), and that's the Taqueria I'm recommending to all you gringos who want authentic Mexican food (but don't know where to go). Waukegan has dozens of taquerias, and we tried many of them when we lived there, but we kept coming back to Toluca #2 (same location as Ofelia's). Their prices are dirt cheap compared to what we face now in Chicago, the service is efficient (if not friendly), and the food tastes a lot better. There are pages and pages of options: tacos, gorditas, tortas, huaraches (think mexican pizza), enchiladas, seafood (yet no fish tacos?), giant grilled meat platters and tostadas (my personal favorite). You can try something new, even exotic, on your tacos (lengua anyone?) but stay away form the "sesos" (if they still have it on the menu). We're adventurous, but we draw the line at brains. read more

I have tried everything from their tacos, tortas to traditional Mexican dishes. It is a family owned business that takes a lot of care into using quality ingredients and it shows. This is NOT the same place as Toluca Restaurant on Washington. When I was living in the area, I was searching for authentic Mexican restaurants like this. Turns out there are quite a few but I stuck to this place as my go to for tacos. Their tortillas are home made which makes for the best kind of tacos. Their burritos are okay, couldn't really say what I didn't like about it but just I've had better. If you're new to the area and looking for REAL Mexican food, then you've found it. The tacos will definitely not disappoint!
