I've been wanting to stop in here ever since it was first converted from the old Subway, but didn't have the chance until today. The restaurant is pretty small, but they packed a lot of seating into this old Subway. The booths can easily fit a group of 6, while the tables can be pushed together to seat more. There are also 3 tables outside as well. Plenty of vegetarian options, which is a huge bonus, and they have Beyond beef for those that enjoy mock meats. I had dinner here with two of my friends, and we all enjoyed our meals! We shared these yummy little horchata balls, and I had a vegetarian burrito (solid size!). I also had two, don't judge haha, classic margaritas. I wouldn't typically order a classic margarita, as I don't do overly sweet or syrupy drinks, but these were really light and yummy!! The Ay Cabron! hot sauce was SO good with my burrito, and had a nice tingle while still providing flavor. I went here based on a recommendation from a friend. This is a small no frills Mexican restaurant. The shrimp tacos with the special sauce was outstanding! However, the mango margarita was on the weak side and I can't say I would recommend it. I will definitely order carry out next time I'm in the area. read more

This is likely my new Go-To Mexican spot! It's a small strip mall spot with a few outdoor tables (too late to enjoy those THIS season, brrrr) I was greeted immediately and given some complimentary chips and salsa. Mild enough for anyone to enjoy. We ordered lots of food, and it was all excellent! My stand out was the chorizo gordita, perfectly prepared and not at all oily. I'll definitely order more of these. We tried a variety of tacos and they were all fantastic as well! No gristle, no overcooked bits, none if the common issues I've had at other local spots. What a stellar taqueria! It looks like they recently renovated and the whole place is very clean and well put together. I ordered 4 tacos; while they all hit the spot, the gobernador and al pastor tacos stood out and thoroughly impressed. Adding beans and rice for $3 is a great value too. The cheesy shrimp in the gobernador are so tender and the accompanying sauce makes it a rich and velvety experience. The quality of the ingredients and the quality of the tortillas (one tortilla held up very strongly) really stood out and I really enjoyed the house salsas they have on hand. Service was pleasant and I got my food turned around very quickly. I'll definitely be returning here to try more of the menu! read more

But Meera Meera has plenty of options especially with their plant based tacos which I believe are made from beyond crumbles! As a part of Lake County Restaurant Week, I checked out this restaurant recently which is relatively new to the Libertyville restaurant scene. La Mera Mera is a Mexican cuisine restaurant that serves delicious tacos, burritos, gorditas, tortas and more. They also serve a variety of drinks like margaritas, beer, micheladas, etc. On my dinner outing, my family and I ordered: 1. Three tacos and a gordita. Taco Oaxaca (w/ carne asada & nopales), Taco Villamelon (w/ carne asada, chorizo, and crispy chicharrones), Taco Cochinita (marinated shredded pork), and a gordita Villamelon. 2. Two tacos and a Volcano tostada Taco Gobernador with grilled shrimp, Taco Chile Rellenos, and Volcano tostada Al Pastor. 3. Chips and salsa as a starter. 4. La Mera Mera margarita with tequila, Tamarind water and Mexican beer. All the food was freshly prepared. The chips were freshly made. The salsa for the chips was tangy and with a minimal amount of heat but not spicy. The tortillas were homemade. My favorite tacos were the Villamelon and the Chile Rellenos. Their Villamelon combination is some is the best I have had in Mexican food. All three types of meats (mentioned above) were cooked properly and went well together. I highly recommend getting this dish. The house salsas (three of them not counting the one with the chips) were awesome). They had a creamy tangy tomatillo salsa, a smokey chile salsa (Arbol, I think), and one more salsa that was orange in color. The margarita was refreshing and tasty. The restaurant was busy and happening. It was well-lit, clean, and inviting. We received good service. The prices were reasonable. Our first time trying this place. Staff were super friendly and nice when we called to order. I tried their specialty tacos: dynamite shrimp, el mero shrimp, and baja fish. Overall, the size was bigger than I anticipated so it was filling in that regard! I liked the variety of toppings they put on each taco, it's not just tomato and lettuce, thank goodness. The best one was dynamite shrimp, but the sauce was a bit too overpowering at the end because it was a lot of the sauce, but I think most people would like this it's just me I tend to like lighter on the sauce. The second best to me was baja fish, but this fares too mild in flavor compared with dynamite shrimp, but the fish does have a nice flavor when i actually got to it, just a bit too mild imo. Would need to add the green salsa verde on the side. Their salsa verde was refreshing and more on the sour profile and definitely has a kick to it. Love the veggies in both!! The el mero was good in flavor, just a bit too heavy for me, a lot of sauce plus avocado and on a flour tortilla. I was gonna do corn tortilla but wanted to try their default palate first. Next time I'll probably go with corn. I think a lot of people would like this as is, it's smooth and rich, but I just prefer more crunch and refreshing ness. Shrimp was not overcooked, but not as tender as other places I've had. Fish was decent also, but hard to tell the fish with so much veggies on top. The best will have to be their horchata. My hubby really liked it, it's very sweet and dense and rich and full of cinnamon flavor. Best we've had so far, and he's ready to go back for second! read more

tried la mera mera for lunch today with a friend. nice menu, cheerful bright interior and very helpful server. i had the beyond meat tacos with cilantro, onions and avo; side of refried beans. my friend had a ground beef burrito. warm chips and salsa started us off happy. tables are clean and spaced comfortably. we were not rushed and our server was terrific. my tacos were YUM! definitely worth a trip back to try more menu items. so good!! read more

Went there with my mom for a pre birthday lunch. The inside is super cute and the staff is very nice. Decided to try three different tacos, of the three the shinning star was the el mero shrimp, it was creamy, the shrimp cooked well, the cheese was gooey and the toppings added to the experience. For top notch guacamole and chips and unusual delicious tacos, go here. Nothing is strange but it's different. They offer tacos from all regions of Mexico, not just the northern part as is usual here. Try the gobernador, shrimp tacos. My favorite is anything on their "Elite Tacos" list. Looks like this place recently opened in Libertyville, and I am always down for Mexican food! I came on a Monday night and it was not busy at all, so service was really quick. The ambiance is casual and relaxing--perfect for a weeknight meal. I tried a strawberry margarita. It was a generous size--very fresh and not too sweet. You can also choose between salt and Tajín for the rim, and of course I chose Tajín. The watermelon gummy was also a cute addition. Prices for drinks were also super reasonable ($6-9). All the tacos sounded delicious, and I ultimately decided to try the Chile rellleno, chicken, and shrimp tacos. At first, I was thrown by the price--$4-5 for a taco seemed like a lot. However, each was a generous portion on a large, thick tortilla. Each one was unique, flavorful, fresh, and had incredible textures. Dined here for the first time ever last night! Celebrated an ex Abbott Labs coworker's birthday with her, another ex Abbott colleague and my first Abbott manager! We had a great time and were there for almost 3 hours! The food was FANTASTIC! I had almost every taco in the Elite Tacos section (so, the Oaxaca, Villamelon, Cochinita, Gobernador and Chicharron) , a side corn dish(equites), and a huge frozen Strawberry Margarita! It was all so fresh, flavorful plus quickly and efficiently served by our amazing server Claudia and the restaurant's owner! The interior has calming white walls with mostly colorful Warhol-esque portraits on them, plus, they play a lot of popular Latin American pop tunes and ballads overhead (my dining companions--who are all Latina, by the way) pretty much sang along to most of those tunes the whole time at dinner! We have been to plenty of Mexican restaurants and this one is a very good one to go visit. It's really hard to find a restaurant that makes a really good posole. Especially out here in the northwest suburbs. We have tried a few and had their posole (recommended by the business that we are visiting )and it was just OK. Some of them were not even in the three star range- to be honest with you. This one: is very good. Pork was tender, not a lot of fat sitting their pooling on the top, came with two corn tortillas, shredded lettuce, and radishes. Plenty of it to go around, and a very healthy portion of posole. Perfect for a winters night, and comfort food, which I was looking for. Ingredients were all fresh. Wife had the Carne Asada, the beans were not salty, the rice was very well made. Didn't stick and not tons of an oil. The steak was a very good quality in my opinion. Did not have an after taste or seemed old steak like some places tend to pass on us unknowing customers. The service was very good, and their prices are very reasonable. I forgot to also mention that they make handmade corn tortillas. The maze they use does not have that old taste either. Outstanding recipe... that again is another thing that we find with businesses that brag about their handmade tortillas. And they don't meet par. La Mera Mera does. They don't have an aftertaste and they are phenomenal. We came in around seven o'clock to have a late dinner dinner. We were greeted very kindly by everyone who worked there. They've only been in business for two years overall, I'd say they are doing everything above and beyond. The place is clean, it's small, and tucked away like a hidden gem in a strip mall near the jewel. We are most definitely going back. Not just because the food but because of the service and the friendliness that the owner and the rest of the staff showed to us. She even made me a fresh cup of coffee for the road back home. And that too was extremely nice, and she had forgot to charge us. We upped the tip for our server since she two was extremely friendly to us, and every person we ran into there, thanked us for coming in. .... by the way: the music doesn't blast in your ear like a lot of Mexican. Restaurants tend to do. I have found when they blast the music, They tend to be hiding the quality of the food or compensating for something else.. ...That is just been my experience... As a sidenote, we also liked that they added an additional information article to each table about La Mera Mera... very nice touch. Highly recommend this growing business.
