It's been a while since we last stopped by and grabbed some food from Taqueros Mexican Restaurant. The kids wanted Mexican food for dinner but we originally were headed to our go-to, Adolpho's. We decided to grab birria tacos instead. Taqueros, is off of Marguerite across from the car dealerships in Mission Viejo. Outdoor seating is available, however, I can't recall if they ever added heaters out front. The weather was too windy and cold to eat outside anyway. I couldn't make up my mind. Eventually, I chose the shrimp tacos as a couple people in my party grabbed the Birria tacos. Service from the staff was friendly, patient and fast. Birria tacos - three came in an order with the consomé along with lime, onions and cilantro. My son was so reluctant to eat here cause he has his favorites elsewhere, but that kid devoured all three tacos. My oldest kid was so excited to eat their birria, they scarfed it down and finished before everyone else. Shrimp tacos - I ordered two of these. The shrimp was PERFECTLY cooked. They were plump, juicy, tasty, seasoned well and sat in a bed of veggies with their sauce. I like to squeeze lime for the acidity or the green salsa from the salsa bar. Salsas - I love that green one. It's very mild for me and I could literally eat it by the spoonfuls. I can't remember how the red (hot) one tastes like. It's been too long and I forgot to grab some this time around. Overall, Taqueros, is still a place we love for Mexican food. It's not fancy, but it's delicious. They will definitely continue to stay in our rotation. read more

Hidden gem! The food is authentic and Mexican traditional. The taste and presentation reminded me of my grandmothers cooking. I am in awe on how delicious the food was and I'm looking forward to the next time I'm in the area to try it again. The service was friendly and we enjoyed the complimentary chips and salsa. I honestly really love this place especially for taco Tuesday! The deals are so worth it. The tacos are around $1.95 each. All the tacos were so good and flavorful. Special shoutout to the crispy taco! I was surprised to find out that the agua fresca is refillable. I'm not sure if they're under new ownership but the tacos tasted way better! The menu does look a bit different and one of the servers came out to talk to us about the different salsas. It was really great and informative. She said on Tuesdays they only brought out their special avocado salsa, that one is a big fave! As for ambiance, the place is giving hole in the wall chill vibes which I don't mind. I don't know what happened to this shop but um this aint it. I hadn't come in a while and I was expecting the awesome service and delicious birria. I wasn't even given the consome. Their birria tacos were bomb. Today I got some soggy sad tacos. No cilantro or onions. Only little limes that I grabbed myself. No chips nothing. Was a little hungover in the morning and was craving some good old breakfast of champions tripe to start my day so thought to give Taqueros a try. Mind you when I saw the price $20 for a menudo I was going to walk out the door as nearby places sell the same size bowl for anywhere between $11-$13 but was lazy and said screw it im here might as well pay the piper. The menudo was excellent and I like the fact they don't put hominy in their soup. Served with a side of corn tortillas. $20 is still pricey for soup so I'll be going somewhere else next time. read more

This was one of the first places I went to when I moved to the area and now it's a staple spot that we frequent often. The chips are so crunchy and the salsa bar is amazing. We usually get a burrito when it's not taco Tuesday because it's huge and filling. Most tacos on Tuesday are less than $2 and the crispy potato is my favorite. I highly recommend always getting their agua fresca because they are the bees knees. The service is always stellar and the staff is very accommodating. We frequent this small strip plaza for Koko Sushi and recently tried Santora next door, which have both been added to our go-to rotation. With this upward trend, we had to give Taqueros a try and y'all, it's a hit. We arrived at opening so we got to spend a bit of time figuring out what to get without holding up a line. When we finally settled, we got a few things to share. I chose the 3 Taco Plate and got a mix of meats - 2 carnitas and 1 chicken. The plate comes with rice and beans, so it was pretty filling. We also grabbed a cup of the Naranja agua fresca, which we were told was made with mandarin oranges. It was sweet, juicy and the perfect citrus flavor to cut through the spices we subjected ourselves to from the salsa bar. Hubs got the Cali Burrito. It was filled with Steak, Fries, Cheese, Guacamole, Sour Cream, Salsa and Rice. He chose to make it a combo with rice and beans on the side, but it ended up being a bit too much since it was already in the burrito. They also offer chips if you dine in, but we declined since we had a lot of food. They have a salsa bar near the front, so we got one of everything to give it a try. Hubs favorite was the verde (green) salsa since it was mild. I really enjoyed the verde with the carnitas, but if you love spicy, the light orange one definitely packed some heat. It's the type of heat that lingers and builds, but you can't stop eating it haha. I'm sure we'll be back. With the agua frescas using seasonal fruits, we are most anticipating their feature for Summer - possibly a watermelon refresher? I also want to give their chilaquiles and birria a try. read more

My family and I came here on a Sunday evening and really enjoyed it. We ordered the carne asada plate and mole poblano plate. I appreciated that I was able to custom order my carne asada plate to only include beans. I also loved that it came with guacamole and a lot of carne asada with grilled onions and serranos. The mole plate was a little too sweet but it came with a lot of chicken, beans and rice. They had watermelon and horchata aguas frescas. We ordered the watermelon which was very refreshing and sweet. The customer service could be a bit better as the cashier was not very welcoming. The restaurant is not too big but they have plenty of tables inside. When I went, I had the Baja shrimp tacos and they were delicious. You absolutely have to get the sauce that comes with it behind the counter. This would've been 5 stars if I didn't feel duped by the size of the tacos. I had read that their Taco Tuesday special was "buy 1 taco, get 1 free", but you know how the saying goes... if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! Let me clarify, they DO offer the bogo deal on Tuesdays, however the crispy tacos are mini size. I'm talking 5x2, if that. Had I known that in advance, I would've gotten 4 tacos instead of 2. One taco is $3.99, which is quite expensive if that's their normal sized taco. I literally ate one taco in 3 bites! I'll drop the mic now, but you get my drift. The actual taste of the tacos were delicious. I got the shredded beef, and it came with lettuce, tomato and melted cheese. I got a side of chips and 2 oz guacamole for $1.95. The guac was legit. My total bill was a little over $6... but I was still hungry. It seems they're known for their birria tacos, so I'll check that out next time. They're located in Mission Viejo off of Marguerite across from Saddleback College (next to Santora Wings). Plenty of parking is available in the shared lot. One more thing I want to mention - it took about 15 min for them to make my 2 mini tacos, and they weren't very busy, so I'd recommend ordering online in advance. Sadly I have to update this review and share that this eatery has lied to us for several years. The refried beans contain lard (pork product). I found out on my last visit from the person at the register. Over the past few years every time I asked, I was told they were vegetarian. A disgusting way to treat customers to make a quick buck at the expense of their dietary restrictions and religious beliefs. read more

I can't believe I haven't reviewed Taqueros yet, as it's one of my favorite food spots in OC. Taqueros is unmatched for birria tacos. The consome is incredibly flavorful and the taco is filled to the brim with meat. The old taqueros was pretty much five stars. We had them cater a large party last year and had a great experience with the staff and excellent food. We visited the restaurant often thereafter and it was always good. I even remember seeing a group trying items for a wedding tasting and told them I had the highest recommendations for this place. Since the menu change it hasn't been the same. It was marketed as a simpler menu. But it took the lady taking my order quite some time to figure out how to enter my order. A bean and cheese burrito took 30 seconds to enter and took another person to assist. The tacos were tiny and not the same quality. It was disappointing. And yeah that email thing was just weird. I wouldn't use them to cater again. Would they say something offensive to me or my guests? I'm completely alright with your right to your opinion and to practice what you want. But if you're a restaurant and sending me an email, I want to know I got a coupon for a buck off a taco or something. It's pretty simple, right? Gimme some news on some new Agua Frescas. I'm game for that. I don't think I'll be coming back here again and advise against a restaurant that cares more about pushing their opinions than the food. Upon entering Taqueros you are hit with the smell of fried lard. Mexican accordion music. So you know it's going to be good. Salsa bar has four varieties of heat. Beware the orange one. It looks so innocent and demure. But one dip of the chip and it melted my tongue, esophagus, and large intestine. You've been warned. Birria Tacos are the star of the show. Tender shredded beef and melted cheese. Dip it into the juice and bite. The juice drips down your arm and off your elbow. Be careful to cover your pants. Delicious. And the Horchata is sweet, creamy, cinnamonny, and homemade. Perfect base to neutralize the orange acid burning the hole in your gut. I am so disappointed. This was my first time trying their food and I ordered delivery. My food arrived lukewarm and I had to microwave it. I had the taco/enchilada combo with a beef taco and cheese enchilada. Portions were small for the price, and this is yet another Mexican establishment that is stingy with their sides of rice/beans. You literally get a couple tablespoons of each. My taco was soggy and I ended up throwing most of it out. Waste of money. Not long ago, I got on my meal a piece of metal. I assume it could be from the spatula or scraper. I told the person in the front. They did another taco. I still paid. Not even a sorry. Accidents happen, that doesn't mean they should happen at this is quite dangerous. This is not the only con I have had here. I think is the last time I will come after coming here since day one. Come here for the Birria. Excellent flavors, texture, reasonable price. The Birria tacos were dripping with greasy goodness. With the consommé broth, cilantro and onions, and the orange hot sauce... it was a flavor explosion beyond compare. Very good. Husband got the carne asada burrito which was what you'd expect from anywhere. The Birria fries were quite generous and loaded with yummy goodness. The hot sauce/salsas will make or break my opinion of Mexican places, and this place easily gets five stars for their ayce self serve hot sauce/salsa bar. They have a clear sign over the salsa bar explaining that the green is mild, the red is hot, and the orange is very spicy. My favorite was the orange. It was indeed very spicy and very mouth wateringly excellent. It had a creaminess to it that provided some balance, but the kick to it was still fire. Very good hot sauce. Hubs and I will definitely be back. Friendly service, generous, tasty salsa bar, and excellent Birria tacos ... there is nothing more to ask for.
