I am so very pleased with the service that I received this past Saturday. I was in town for a bday weekend and wanted my hair blown out and ends trimmed. I have virgin African textured hair, so if your hair is like mine, this may not be the right shop for you. I made an appointment with the senior stylist, Tara, for a silk press. Upon my arrival, the daughter, Naja, did a great job washing my hair but is clearly inexperienced with blow drying and flat ironing my hair type. The blow dry was extremely painful and I felt some strands of my hair being ripped out of my scalp when she was flat ironing it. Both women were made aware that I was in pain, so Tara blow dried my hair again. She completed the flat iron and did a satisfactory job; however, I was disappointed due to the negative comments and insults I received from both because they were inexperienced and frustrated in how to blow dry my hair type. After the abusive way I was treated, I will not be returning to this place of business. I have no prior relationship with these ladies at all, and booked through Yelp. SERVICE: These ladies know what they are doing, and I appreciate the high quality of treatment, maintenance and styling. It's been almost a year since anybody touched my hair- I wear a natural Afro so my hair is virgin - type 4a/4b. That said, I had lots of split ends, and combing my hair felt like chopping through a forest. Plus extreme heat is a no-go. I was a little hesitant going in; I've had a couple of bad experiences, as I'm sure many others have. Tara was willing to review the amount of heat involved and what she had my permission to trim. Some stylists get an attitude if you have questions, but it's my head, my hair, my money. I'm glad she checked in with me to confirm what was going on. Especially since this is a brand new relationship and we don't know each other. They are professional and polite. They offer free snacks and drinks that include mimosa, coffee, tea. Fab! Amenities and fixtures were clean. PRICING: Tara doesn't come cheap- price for shampoo, moisturizing and protein treatment, plus excellent trim, blowout, flat ironing - $210. They give you a price list before she starts everything, but those add-ons do add up. Needless to say, there was a bit of sticker shock. I decided on 5 stars for the level of quality. That is rare in our community. I am willing to pay for someone who truly knows what they're doing and won't screw up my strands. That said, Tara is an expert. When she was done, my hair fell perfectly. Indeed, it needed the attention. BOOKING: I messaged Tara through Yelp, and she contacted me that day; there was a 10-14 day wait for the appointment. She messaged me back and asked me to text her for a date. I'm not a fan of giving out my personal number- too many vendors abuse it- but, ok. CAVEAT 2: She doesn't stay open late. So if you're used to stylists who seat you late or see you after work, you'll have to work around it. PARKING: They validate, but I still paid $4. It's underground, and there are attendants who make it more confusing than it should be. She invited me to come back and get more treatments, but when I asked, I didn't hear any specifics of what additional treatments I could use. I haven't decided what I will do with my hair going forward, and it's doubtful I'd pay $200 regularly, but for the many women who do, Tara is your lady. Pics to come. I have been to Tara's three times now and I am so glad I found her. Having curly hair was definitely a struggle for me since it took me around 15 years to figure out how to manage it. Honestly, the best hair salon experience I've ever had! Tara and Naja KNOW what they're doing with natural hair and work with you to make your hair as healthy as it could be. A few years ago I went natural. Not because I had anything against relaxers but because the last time I got one--at Tara's of course--I fell in love with another client's natural, Afro style. When I finally decided to find a new stylist closer to where I live, I did a LOT of research and it seemed clear that Tara was the best around. Found Tara on Yelp and I'm glad I did. This was a very hard decision for me, having the same hairdresser for 20 years but I knew it was time for a change. Update: my hair (twist out style) turned out, interesting. I think my next visit will be something with less product.
