I had my friend from Maryland pick some take out from Tarka. He had Little Thailand (and loved it) now he needs Indian food. Tarka is always consistent and easy to recommend to visitors. I had my 'usual' chicken Korma and Garlic Naan with Veggie Empeñadas. The mint chutney for the empanadas is always fresh and tasty. He tried the Saar Paneer and loved it. I tried it and it was great. I made the 20 minute drive to Tarka where I ordered the vegetable pakoras, saag paneer, mango lassi, and some garlic naan. The garlic naan was exactly what I needed. Warm, buttery, pillowy soft in the middle. Just the right amount of seasoning. Everything else I was quite disappointed with. The vegetable pakoras did not have the crunch I wanted, the paneer was just OK, and I didn't even finish the mango lassi. Paneer Saag ($8.75) -- Let me just say this is mindblowing. Service - 5/5 -- Came here with group of eight and there was barely any line. Ordering was quick and all the staff are professional and visible like if In-N-Out got a Michelin star. They all have black Tarka shirts and jackets that are very fashionable. Everyone is full of enthusiasm and energy. Food came very quickly, delivered straight to our table (!!!) by a staff member as soon as it's made. They passed the lukewarm water test perfectly! While there was no hot water available per se, they offered to heat up a cup of cold water. The result was perfectly lukewarm and soothing! Just this result alone is first in class at this price level. Ambience - 4.5/5 -- Great spacious space. There are lots of small, squarish tables for 2-4 that could be joined to make a longer table. I love this modular design! There are huge windows that allow plenty of sunshine and parking lot greenery to shine through, and that is super nice. The wall color is a bit funky darkish yellow, but it's not a big deal. The main downside is there are only two bathrooms, they were non-unisex, and the men's didn't smell great. The restaurant has so much capacity they could do well to add more bathrooms! Quality - 4.5/5 -- I'm not a good judge of Indian food, but it was hella warm and delicious. Customizable spice levels!!! I'm in love. Value - 6/5 -- $8.75 for a warm, spicy, and delicious that filled me up! And Yelp gives 10% off! Overall - 6/5 -- If there is an afterlife, I hope there will be a Tarka there, with paneer curry with customizable spice levels. Because I'd be down to eat the items on their menu forever. The only downside is I went to this restaurant on a Friday and they were out of the Taj Mahal beer and the food took 45 minutes to be served. Best hidden gem in Brodie Lane area / South Austin as Tarka nails every dish and take-out order we have had since quarantine. They are always on point with service, food quality, and wait times (or arrival time). Even if you are ordering your food from a 3rd party delivery service your food and items will be packaged up for the ride and will 100% be piping hot when you get it. The quality here is super great in those respects. We really enjoy some great Indian staples here as the quality is always top notch and at a great price! I will give you a heads up as Tarka can get a little busy around dinner times especially Fridays - Sundays. Just be sure to call or order ahead and bring your mask as there will be plenty of other folks waiting to grab their order(s) as well as delivery drivers (Door Dash, Uber Eats, Favor, etc). I remember having food catered by Tarka at one of my work events where the food was pretty great so I convinced my husband to order in from Tarka for dinner tonight. The Samosa was decent but that's where the pros for Tarka stops. The Garlic naan was doughy and uncooked, so was the malai Kofta. The Paneer was despicable. Really not the best Indian restaurant In Austin. I know there's a lot of hype around Tarka and I was really excited to try their food. We tried several dishes since we were a large group. Biriyani, chicken kebab, paneer tikka, naaan, onion pakoda and samosas. The only dish I liked, in fact, loved... was their naan. Crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Perfect.
