After a few visits in house and for pick-up, I can say I am a Tarka Indian Kitchen fan and will remain a returning customer. I describe this place as Pei Wei (or Noodles and Company) of Indian Food, which is really just to say it is kind of a fast food joint where you order your hot, fresh food at the bar. However, Tarka brings the flavor profile and menu of a sit-down joint, and we just keep coming back for more. I really love their tikka masala with paneer. The Garlic Naan is so good that the last time we went, my sweetie ate three pieces and swore up and down that there were 5 and not 4 in the basket when I went looking for my second (MISSING!) piece. They have great vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and nut-free options. And they are super kid friendly, as we went with kiddos and they enjoyed the food too. So it's been a long time since I last had Tarka, so a group of us decided to come here and eat. I remembered telling someone else in my party that my memory of Tarka was it was the Pei Wei of Indian food. And after dining here again, its not as bad as I remember but it thoroughly fits in that category of Pei Wei (which is not bad if you happen to like Pei Wei). Tarka to me is a perfectly serviceable quick Indian place where you grab and go. But what Tarka is not, is an authentic Indian place, the kind that I crave - warm, complex curries and spices particularly. Tarka is still hip, modern and the food tastes alright (it's hard not to enjoy chicken tikka masala no matter who makes it), but as far as Indian food goes, I'm definitely going to say I've had much better at many other Austin restaurants. Delicious, Fast casual Indian food! Love their chicken korma and tikka masala. Samosas weren't that great, but everything else I've tried has been pretty good for the price. I usually do medium (which was not too spicy for me) or hot heat level when I want it extra spicy. If you are ordering to go, definitely place the order in advance or you'll have to wait a while (10-15 mins+) as they are usually pretty busy. The good news: service was amazing. I ordered takeout and the entire process between ordering online and getting my food was so easy, and the employee that brought my food out to me was so nice. The bad news: the food itself was extremely disappointing. The chicken tikka marsala tasted like tomato soup, the rice was dry, the minced garlic on the naan hadn't been cooked at all, and the samosa chaat was the best thing I ordered but even that was about average. Food is ok..Samosa chaat didn't have a lot of flavor - it was without curd that is a traditional part of all chaat items. It didn't taste like freshly made samosa either - could have been thawed from the freezer. Naaninis seemed like an interesting fusion style dish, but again disappointing. I haven't had a single meal at this location that wasn't exceptional. A lot of people refer to it as indian "fast food", but I disagree. The flavors are consistently comparable to authentic dishes from more expensive restaurants. The spices and masala powder used are both perfect. The chutneys are also delicious. Everyone's tastes are different, so it is a matter of opinion at the end of the day. But, this north India born human considers Tarka one of their favorite spots for Indian food in south Austin, if that gives you any push to try it out. read more

Ordered some takeout coconut curry with shrimp, and it was delightful. A great portion of food for the price. The shrimp was fresh tasting and well cleaned. The coconut curry sauce was balanced and not too heavy or rich but still incredibly flavorful. And the rice was perfectly cooked. The naan was a touch rubbery but it was tasty and went well with the curry. Overall a very solid meal and I highly recommend it for a lunch on the go. The service is friendly and super quick. Vegetable samosas: Surprisingly flaky shell with flavorful veg filling. 2 small sams per order. Chicken pakoras: Never had before. Indian "chicken nuggets," or thin strips rather, fried in a very light batter and tossed in a powdery curry concoction served with a very tangy dipping sauce. Messy to eat, but yummy. Tarka has consistently yummy food, no matter when I've stepped in or what I've gotten. Staff is friendly and accommodating for my food allergy needs. The place is always clean. Some patrons with small children are messy, but the staff tidys up quickly. Their to-go orders are quick and packaged well, which is saying something for food like curries. Their packaging is compostable or recyclable! It's not the most exciting Indian food, but it's a great lunch spot for something quick and tasty.
