Love it! Have 66 beetle and am kind of new to it. I really loved how patient he was and how he told me what was wrong and what needed to be done. I felt like they truly care about the customer. Other places before tried to overcharge me but he gets it done quick and easy. He walks you through the problem and tell you what to look out for if it comes to happen again. Called them for some simple question while I was at the auto part store buying oil, and they were friendly to answer. They care about your car and want you to have a good running car. I recommend calling ahead of time and letting them know the problem. Love this place! read more

This shop is great. Not only did they install my shift bushings and align my linkages when other shops were quick to suspect the transmission, these guys were super fast. I got a call in two hours that my truck was ready to be picked up. They also answered my random questions and have shown to be experts when it comes to old VW's. read more

I've been bringing my 2003 Jetta to Tassi's for over a year and love it. They don't have the loaner car and customer lounge, but their prices are better and they get the work done much sooner. I've brought my car in without an appointment and the mechanic has come out and looked at it and/or fixed it on the spot. read more

If they weren't the only VW shop within a 25 mile radius then they'd be out of business. For close to a year I've been going there to pickup parts. I've seen how careless the mechanics are when handling the vehicles that are wedged into the parking lot. If you're lucky enough to get a street parking spot, beware the citations and curbed wheels. (BTW, if you had your green 96 Jetta there this week I witnessed your car bump-parked into a spot and your wheel lips curb rashed.) But there I was, in a total jam and had to have my bus towed there. The next day, the boys there said they fixed the issue and it was all ready to be picked up. After paying and walking out to my spot on the street, I was happy that I'd be driving home. When I started my bus it was mis-firing exactly like it was when I had it towed there. I showed Mark, one of the mechanics, and Bruce(the owner dude). Collectively they could only scratch their head. I asked them what I paid for and they muttered that it was for "carb synchronization." How can you even sync my carbs when half the motor isn't firing? Hmmmm. Given their professional opinion, I had my car towed home so that their professionals could "fix" another customer's car. They will NEVER touch any car I own or any VW'er I know. If you want to be ripped off, receive poor service, and a non-caring attitude then by all means visit Tassi. If you want your car to be bumped in the lot and returned to you with oil drops on your paint, then you know where to go. Don't be shocked when you receive that parking ticket in the mail, it must have just slipped Bruce's mind to tell you about it. Don't learn a $90/hr hard lesson. Don't go to Tassi. read more

Being around the shop at Tassi's is like being inside the mind of the VW itself. These guys KNOW how to procure, build and/or fix everything a VW owner needs and they don't waste time doing the stupid stuff you can do yourself. That's why they give such a great deal! Plus they are super kind. Being a lover of vintage VW classics is not always easy, it takes character and patience to maintain these vehicles because you can't always buy new parts. These guys do everything they can to make sure you are happy with your vehicle. For those who complain about Tassi's you might want to think about it before you run-off and buy a junker and expect them to fix it in a day. read more

i bought a 2001 passat from these jokers. car lasted 6 months and the transmission blew. the car had a different engine in the car already at 166k miles and i should have known that was a sign that the car had been thru something serious and other problems would come up but i liked the car. The check engine light to check transmission soon before it blew. When i took it to a trusted mechanic he said the transmission was going to fail and it did soon after. Unfortunately fixing it would cost almost as much as Tassi charged me for the car in the first place. I would recommend not trusting these people. They sold me a damaged car. read more

There's not a single thing I can say to recommend this place for service. My car's been sitting there since 9/12/08 and as of today, 11/5/08 they haven't done a single thing to it. I asked Duncan today why I was supposed to remain patient and polite and gracious. His answer? He had a tantrum on the phone, complained about my car, said "I'm done with you" and hung up on me. As though I have somehow managed to force them to repair my car against their will. Completely unbelievable. UPDATE: 12 January 09 car's still not done. Sat for 3 of the latest weeks because of a bum fuel pump no one called to tell me about. These guys are crazy, I think. read more

This is a great shop. You can tell that the mechanics here have decades of experience with older VW's.. which ends up saving labor time.. which saves you money! Work was always done relatively cheaply. Sometimes, there's a bit of a wait time to get your car back, but I've yet to find a better VW repair shop in the bay area. read more

When I bought my car, a 1970 VW Squareback, the next step was to find a decent mechanic to keep her in champion form. I called around and called around and all the VW shops in town say they don't work on pre-1995 cars, but call Tassi's. Well I did, and at first I was happy that they could get me in for a tuneup relatively soon, and they're right by the BART station so I could get to work pretty easily. That was pretty much all I can say to recommend Tassi's. They obviously have cornered the vintage VW market around the Bay Area, but looking around that shop I think the Germans who designed those cars would not approve of the way Tassi's runs a business. The place is a total dump, with VW carcassess and parts piled up to the sky and across a lot. As opposed to the neat, orderly, Deutsch mechanics of the inside of the autos, the shop itself is chaos defined. Even the customer service counter is impossible to reach because of car seats and other detritus tossed around along with screws, scrap metal, grease, and dirt. I drove up to drop my car off, but confusion ruled the school. There was no place to actually put my car, and none of the mechanics seemed to be able to tell me where to pull up to. Finally I double-parked and ran in, and they told me to park across the street. A tuneup, for which nothing abnormal was found, took two days because nobody called me to tell me my car was finished. It took a few callbacks to figure this out, and then the guy tells me I had "better get your car out of here because we don't have the space to store it on our lot." Excuse me! I've already been out of a car for two days now instead of one, and have been calling repeatedly with no results, all for something that probably took half an hour to complete. I asked the mechanic to do a few simple things for me: re-install a door handle cover that had come loose, and install a new hood ornament that I had bought. Neither of these things was even attempted, with the explanation that they "didn't have time to do that stuff". The number written in permanent marker on my windshield (which still hasn't come off) is an added bonus. What kind of crackhead operation is this? If this is the best vintage VW shop in town, please save me from the worst. I've already bought a few books because it looks like I'll be doing some of my own work from now on. read more

If you are one of us keeping classic VW's out and about these are the guys to see. I live in Oakland so they are way out of the way but after using other places much closer I take my '75 Van in to them. Their work is good and the prices always surprise me by not being higher. They've got parts others don't have and I'd be just as glad to take in newer VW if I had one., Fair, economical and just good. These old things are hard and very old and people who expect miracles for their old piece of junk get angry if they can't make a pig into a unicorn every time and gripe on Yelp. I originally went to tassi's,they supposed to be the VW specialist,I had my transmission rebuild on my 86 vanagon 11 months later crapped out, took it back to them to honor their warranty,it's now 2 months later they have not touched my van they keep telling me next week, my van still in the same spot and they keep telling me they're tired of pushing it around,I just hope they fix my trans so I could get the hell out of there and never come back incompetent liars that didn't have any problem taking my money when I bought a transmission from them, but now it seems they're taking their time honoring the warranty,or they just don't want to do it because they already got my money,stay away from this place,I just didn't know any other VW place around read more

( 0 ) If only I'd checked yelp first! Not knowing, I was recommended to tassi inc by one of their friends. I prefer to patronage local businesses so i drove over. My Vw Beetle has a steering problem. I explained to them that it slid side to side every time it hit a bump and is difficult to control No shortage of potholes in the city! Next day , before closing, i picked up the car and didn't notice much of a change in the steering.Took it back and one of the mechanics gave me attitude. The steering box was re-adjusted. This car is a project car not a daily driver. Drove it on the freeway and felt worst! Took the car back again yesterday and the owner test drove it with me. I asked him why they didn't catch all the problems the1st time and he didn't have much of an answer only excusses! My point is, I'm out over $600 and the problem is worst because on the way home it started to make a GRINDING NOISE. WILL NEVER GO BACK AND HOPE THAT THIS REVEIW SAVES SOMEONE TIME AND MONEY. I used to take my VW to these people around 1990 and always loved the work they did. With the recent purchase of another VW I needed some emergency work done and discovered they are still around! Took my 71 super beetle in here to get the manifold boot replaced along with the steering damper replaced and a carburetor tune up. First impressions were good. Met the owner (Bruce) and he showed me around the shop. They are great guys and really seem to know their stuff. I don't know how people can give these guys a one star review. Air cooled VW owners and mechanics are a different breed. If you don't get it, then maybe you got the wrong car. Sure, sometimes it may take a while to get the repairs done but we drive cars that aren't know for their speed and we are laid back people. My repairs took 1.5 days. (Dropped off on a Saturday afternoon and picked up Tuesday Morning) Don't hate on the ONLY mechanic in SF that SPECIALIZES in air cooled. If you don't like Tassi then drive or tow your broken car all the way down to Redwood City to Fred's garage. The only other garage on the peninsula that does air cooled Vee Dubs. These guys will do it all. While I was there I watched them uncrate and install a chromed out 2110cc dual carb stroker race engine for some lucky and proud owner. read more

Tassi knows volkswagens and I have no complaint about the work the FINALLY did on my van, but their customer service is terrible! They had my van for over a month after promising to have it done in a week and never called me to say what the holdup was. When I called them (three different times), Bruce was NEVER there and the person on the phone (while nice) didn't know the answer. They always told me Bruce would call me back but he never did. As someone said, they're the only game in town, but if there was another choice I'd go there. read more

I purchased a 1986 Westfalia through these guys a few years ago with a rebuilt engine from their shop. It runs horrible. I've taken it back half a dozen times, always the same thing "we can't find anything wrong with it" I'm into them for 3k plus the price of the rig. Bruce the owner is a great guy, very fair and honest. The front end staff are accommodating and knowledgeable but the mechanics are not always thorough and sometimes careless- left my curtains torn slightly with grease on them one time after they rebuilt my engine. After about six years of reasonable service history and very fair prices they left my Westy two blocks down the street overnight to attempt to diagnose a starter issue. It was like the third time back since I was having intermittent starter problems after they put a rebuilt engine in my Westy. It was broken into and ransacked overnight- stole my fishing gear, expensive rods and reels, camping gear all northface, north face freethinker gortex jacket and many other things. They agreed to leave it in garage while attempting diagnosing the problem so that it would not get broken into and I got burned. What surprised me is they considered it my fault...They replaced the broken window at no charge (left the glass all over the floor...) but refused to take responsibility for my personal items so I'm taking them to small claims court for my losses. The insult to this injury is that they never fixed the starter issue, it is likely a hot start relay issue or wiring around starter related which they overlooked... This never would have happened had they been able to figure out the problem. Getting it worked on this week at another VW shop north of SF. Break ins around the shop have gotten much much worse. Do not leave your vehicle overnight with them. You cannot trust them to leave it inside even if they say they will... Apparently now it is just a misdemeanor offense, downgraded from a felony offense, for vehicle break ins that is what the police officer said to me when I filed the police report. Thus car breakins are now commonplace all around the shop at night. read more

okay, tassi's is the best for parts!!! cheap as can be, better than internet with wholesale. their staff is friendly with the owner being the janitor(he's in charge of mopping) but bruce(owner) is always running around like a chicken with his head cut off. they did a bunch of service for me that I was satisfied with in regards to price, its more than you can ask for or your car can ask an expert to do. read more

I understand the complaints as well as the compliments for Tassi's. Unfortunately, they do the drop the ball all too frequently. I've listened to peoples complaints about Tassi's and they are legitimate complaints. Having state this, on the plus side, Bruce is not a burn artist. He will never overcharge a customer, and if you're having money issues, he will go out of his way to work with you. The biggest problem I see at Tassi's is scheduling. If they could only keep track of their commitments better, the dissatisfied customers would drop by at least 80%. And, they do know Volkswagens, so I would trust them with any V W. Keep in mind, Bruce can't help the way he is...he's a surfer~ read more

5/06 i brought my bug to tassi's for a tuneup and a clutch adjustment (on a new clutch) and it was reported that the car needed another new clutch...why, if a new clutch was just installed, i asked...perhaps it was a faulty clutch was the answer...so in went another new clutch ...by 6/15 the car developed a major clutch chatter so back i went and it was determined more clutch work/ parts were necessary...back on 6/22 w/ still the same symptoms, and more clutch work/parts AGAIN it was determined were necessary....within a month and a half total charges were a shy 1000.00...bills parts lists indicate cross shaft replaced twice, in addition to all other related new clutch parts...8/06 clutch cable snaps....12/06 clutch goes again altogether...not even 3000 miles since clutch was replaced...tassi's response when asked if the clutch was under warranty...tow it here and lemme see it...gotta make sure you weren't an abusive driver on those hills in sf...these guys in my experience are mechanics who would best be avoided... read more

We took our air cooled bus there because the previous owner had indicated them. We informed them of a oil leek, which they supposedly repaired by changing the gaskets. We were leaving the next day for a honeymoon camping trip to Oregon. We didn't make it through Petaluma. They had put the gaskets loosely , which caused the oil to bubble up and ruined the engine. We contacted them various times in vain, they just kept saying that Bruce wasn't there, and that he would return our call, which never happened. After about a month of waiting, we decided to make a complain trough the better business bureau, which he never replied either (which is so weird, since it is going to stay on his business record for the next 20 years). I would never recommend this business to anyone ever!!! Unless you want to waste your money, energy and a lot of time going back and forth from the store getting nothing resolved! read more

Yes, they're prices are low but in this case you get what you pay for. My wife taught Bruce's (the owner) kids and this, coupled with wanting to support their small business, wanted to give them our business. However, our experience has always been sub-par, at best. They've got a lot of work and I believe their problem has to do with managing their time effectively. Their work, again in our experience, has always been shoddy. An 80,000 mile tune-up, which included changing the timing belt on a 2000 VW Passat wagon ran me around $1,200. Not easy to swallow, especially considering that the car's oil pan practically fell off on route home after picking it up. Needless to say, I had to get it towed back to Tassi's since it was un-drivable. After a couple of years of dealing with this shop I finally had enough. I now take my car to Prestige Autowerks in San Mateo. I've had NOTHING but AMAZING results with this shop. This guy (Chris) knows what he's doing...and always going the extra mile to help keep costs at a minimum, which is always hard when dealing with my 2000 VW Passat. read more

i took my van to tassi and havent seen it since. i had the engine rebuilt which takes about 9 hours to do .....its going on a month and a half.when i dropped my ride off with them, iwas told i would be getting a call about the diagnosis....didnt happen. i had to physically show up and see what the efin deal was. i put money down on the rebuild and had to call pretty much every week to see if it was done. i keep getting told that they need another week, call friday, call after tuesday, call call call.most of the good reviews ive read talk about their ability to get parts and their knowledge, and how nice they all are there. im sure they know their stuff when it comes to vws, and they sure are real apologetic about not having the job done, or not calling you back. the only thing i can say thats good about this place is EVERYONE brings their vws to these guys...so i trust that if and when i get my ride back its gonna be tip top....this is a hope for the best kind of auto repair place.. read more
