The 3 star rating I gave was solely based on the macarons. They speak for themselves. I've always thought macarons are overhyped and overpriced, but this place proves otherwise. For $2 each, they're well worth it. However, with that said, if you are going to Taste By Spellbound in South Windsor expecting a warm, inviting atmosphere to spend time drinking coffee and eating pastries, then you're in for a rude awakening. When I walked up to the building, I actually observed the hours on the door pretty intently because the place looked closed. There was dim lighting, the person working was sitting and I couldn't see them upon entry, and the space looked bare. There was ample selection of desserts/macarons/pastries, but when I inquired if they had coffee, the person working there looked stunned that I even asked. But there was a coffee grinder right behind her and google lists this as a coffee shop. That was very confusing to me and it's bizaare that there was nothing to sip on while eating. There were a couple small table and chairs, but the place seemed so cold and uninviting that I didn't bother to sit and eat there. Overall, if you're interested in macarons or sweets on the go, then I'd give this place a visit because I don't think it'll disappoint. If you're looking for a spot to hang out and really take in the food and atmosphere, then this isn't it. read more

We sampled a brownie bite that was topped with a touch of frosting and rainbow sprinkles. It had a nice fudgy flavor and mini chocolate chips mixed into the batter for that extra chocolate kick. We tried 4 Macaroons at $2 a piece. Thier were several flavors to choose from so we went with 2 of the Pineapple/Lemon, 1 Raspberry/Mango & 1 Pineapple Cherry. By far our favorite was the Pineapple/Lemon it had a nice contrast of tart versus sweet. The outsides are just plain meringue, the center's are flavored. They are painted with edible food coloring so your fingers will be left tinged with coloring. So you might want to stash some wet wipes in your pocket....for me I just used one of my much kind baby wipes....they come on handy. So if you are in Evergreen Walk and in need of a treat this might be the place to go.....by the way they had some pretty good looking banana pudding in the display case....hum...maybe I'll try that next time. read more

Located near LL Bean and next to Omaha Steaks. Came here for the hot chocolate on a rainy Sunday afternoon but they were out. Got the chai latte ($4) instead, which was pretty damn good - not overly sweet like Starbucks and you can actually enjoy the spices that comprise the drink. Pastries range from $2 - $5 - got the raspberry lavender cupcake, pumpkin spice macaroon, and an ice-cream sandwich. The cupcake frosting and flavor combo was nice, the cake part itself was ok - nothing special. Macaroon shells were dry but the filling was decent. The chocolate chip ice-cream sandwich with cinnamon chocolate ice cream was pretty interesting, recommend. There were outlets here if you wanted to study/work on something (no wifi though) and a general nice, quiet ambiance. Loved the decor and little knick-knacks they sold. Overall, would come here again to chill with a friend over a chai tea latte and ice-cream sandwich, maybe a cupcake too. read more

Ordered a cake for my 30th birthday; the customer service when we ordered from the Evergreen location could have been better...it was clear that the girl at the counter, while polite, wasn't quite sure how to price our order and had little feedback when I asked her what sort of flavors I thought would go well together. A week before my party I received a phone call that the cake had been priced wrong and that I owed another $10 - not a big deal, but I felt that since it was an error on the part of the bakery, they probably should've let it go. Either way, the cake was beautiful and delicious. But when my friend picked up the cake, she was told no one could help bring it to the car because the store would be left unattended. Thankfully she got the cake into the car without any major disaster. So, overall...amazing (delicious) creative work but some customer service issues. You order two coffees, the dark roast and the medium roast. "No problem," says the sweet hostess. Five minutes later, the coffee is ready and Bam. The moment of truth. There is no dark roast. There's no medium roast. The medium roast and dark roast are interchangeable, slightly less than hot, with a absence of body. The cost for this disappointing weak coffee experience is $6.85. Dunkin' Donuts serves a better cuppa coffee than I got here. Just so you know, I don't even like Dunkin' Donuts. I won't be going back. read more

Great little bakery but the Apple maps displays it in the wrong place (although the address is correct). It's right next to Omaha Steaks and LL Bean (neither of which you can miss). Got a variety of cupcakes (chocolate chocolate, espresso, pumpkin spice, pop-tart, salted caramel...) macarons and something called an Ooey Gooey Butter Cake to bring to a dinner. Everything was pretty incredible. Not sure what else to say really. Will be back to try more of what they have on offer! read more

Save your money. Go elsewhere. Went in with a friend and received the most horrendous service by the owner ever. No customer should be subjected to that. Such unprofessionalism. Product is definitely not something to rave about. I feel so bad for my friend, who is a great customer and avid bakery goer. I was there with her both times at both locations and although she didn't have the best experience in Avon (the banana cake was dense and the frosting was gritty), she graciously decided to give the West Hartford location a try. She didn't complain about her affogato, although the ice cream was clearly old, and had freezer burn. Picture is filtered so the product looked even worse before that. Owner's response was snide, condescending and unsolicited. I guess she has no concept of "Word of Mouth," and friends who don't stand up for ridiculous unprofessional behavior. What a great place! I actually found this place from other Yelpers and took my daughter here after school for cupcakes and hot cocoa! The hot chocolate (recommended by other Yelpers!) was as described - just perfect! The cupcakes were amazing! Great frosting and taste! The staff was also very nice and when I was showing my daughter the pictures in the place, she mentioned that the pictures are actually of the owner (she could be a model!) and she themed each store to a different storybook. The South Windsor one is Goldilocks and the three bears and it has a nice woodland decor to it! The Avon location has another theme as well. Also, the prices are reasonable - it was nice to walk out with a few cupcakes, hot chocolate and a brownie to take home for about $12. I would consider this place the next time you are in the neighborhood! You wont be disappointed! read more

Both of the ladies that I've had the pleasure of dealing with here, Angel and Renee are extremely knowledge about the products they have and very courteous. The french macaroons are by far my favorite, each week they have different flavors (possibly each day but I only go once a week). The keylime pie was by far the best pie I've ever had, it was so light and just... it was good... really really good. Everything here is good, you're doing a disservice to yourself by not going. They are very well known for their cupcakes because it's filled with flavor for just $3. Their cupcakes are insane and the texture, taste, everything about it is just delicious! I called to order two birthday cakes, and the cheerful girl who helped me was very patient and helpful. She even called me back later to advise me that she didn't think the carrot cake would taste good with lemon curd filling, which I had been having second thoughts about anyway. I thought these 6" cakes were a bit pricey, but was sure they would be worth the cost. And they were! They are 6-7" tall, elegantly smooth-frosted, and decorated tastefully and creatively. They looked like the exquisite cakes I have only seen on the Food Network! She also was VERY kind to carry these cakes to my car for me, as I use a walker to get around. We were having dinner at one of our family's favorite restaurants. After a quick Yelp search for desserts in the area, we discovered Taste. When we got there, there were two other couples ahead of us. It was hard to see what they had to offer, because one couple was blocking the entire display. While they made their selections, we eyed the enormous store made marshmallows. I was tempted by the cheesecake, but knew that they had French Macarons. We settled on a raspberry lemon cupcake and one each of the lemon & raspberry Macarons. After paying, my son picked two comfy chairs by the window, to enjoy our Macarons. It took all of his power to take small bites, and not to shove the entire thing in his mouth. When we got home we split the cupcake. These were your standard size cupcakes. They were spongy, yet moist. The raspberry icing was the perfect portion for this size cake and it wasn't overly sweet. I also might've picked up a couple of truffles (at $2 each...you can't pass them up). The space is super cute, with interesting decorations all over the place. The woman behind the counter was sweet and helpful. It didn't bother her at all, that I made her repeat the flavors (probably for the 100th time that day). The prices are great, especially in this location. The Macarons and truffles were $2 each and the cupcakes were around $3. I'm looking forward to being in the area again. I like this place. I had been seeing Taste by Spellbound's amazing looking pastry creations on social media for a while so I was happy to hear they were opening a second location in South Windsor which is just minutes away from home for me. It took just one visit she tell this was my type of bakery. Everything here is made fresh and they get deliveries from their main location multiple times per day. The staff is nice in the place is really cozy. Comfortable seating with an eclectic touch. And the front window bench seating is perfect for some mild people watching. At this point I think I've had everything they make at least once but they keep coming up with new creations so I keep coming back on my never ending quest to eat them all. Basically they make everything from truffles to cookies to blondies to cheesecake. Their #1 seller is the Cruffin (croissant+muffin) which normally sells out every day within a few hours of opening. I've had them a few times but they have never been worth the trouble to me...just a bit overrated. I wish they were softer and more moist. Personally I recommend their brownies. The brownies are usually a collaboration with some other great topping ideas such as Nutella or Smore's. The other thing they've perfected is hot chocolate... Tried the baked goods for the first time today. I have to say that the cupcake was one of the best I have ever had, although I would have to say it was a little too much of a good thing. A little less icing would make it perfect. The peanut butter chocolate chip cookies and other treats were also delicious. It is a cute little shop, although I agree with those who say that the owner goes too far with the personal pictures. She is a beauty, but it does come across as very vain. We have frequented this bakery in Avon for the past few years. The baked goods are top notch, probably the best cupcakes and cakes in the area. My issue comes with customer service. The bakery had a website problem, which is understandable. The problem is that I submitted a cake request for my son's birthday a week in advance, as the website notes, and heard nothing. I called once and was told the website was down and they were following up with everyone who had placed orders (I never received a call back). The second time I left a voice mail, which was returned the following day. I understand website issues, but the person with whom I spoke offered nothing - not "hey we can make some extra cupcakes, just not the cake you wanted", or "we could make a cake a few days later for you". The response was essentially "our website didn't work, we didn't get your order request, therefore we aren't making your cake". That to me does not speak to someone who values keeping customers. While I think the baked goods are outstanding, I won't be coming back because I value good customer service even more and there are plenty of competing bakeries in the area with much better customer service. read more
