This is my second visit in about a year, but my first Yelp review for Laura's Rise and Shine. What I will say is our first and today's visit were solid 4 1/2 stars visits but I'll round up to 5. Our meals today were really good. Mine was the Skillet. Which was very filling and really good. The wifey had the omelette, which she tells me she liked. The best way to describe the meals is as close to home as you can get. Again the Skillet was a large amount of food. Be hungry if you order it. Our server was very nice and checked on us several times during our stay. This a cute place in a strip mall. So I again this was our second time here. Sadly I can't remember what we ate a year ago but it was good enough for us to remember it and come on back in. So an absolutely recommend this place for your breakfast meal. I assuming other meals are just as good. So go on in and if you have something different- share with us. Oh don't forget this is a CASH ONLY place. read more

This time we decided to eat inside instead of getting it to go. The food was served nice and hot and the portions are very generous. The flavor is phenomenal, reminds me of home cooking growing up. A wonderful local breakfast find while visiting our son in Hampton, VA. Small, but lots of ambiance. Great food, nothing fancy, just good down home fare. This is a no-frills CASH ONLY (so come prepared, there is a family dollar with an ATM in the same shopping center) breakfast/lunch diner with down-home food and friendly service. It's not a large place but the kind servers make you feel right at home. The food is nothing fancy but it's good down-home cooking. We enjoyed the pancake (nice and fluffy) western omelette with potatoes and toast, and my husband had the breakfast burrito with grits. All the food was good and it was all served with a smile. Downing Hampton has a hole in the wall, found in a strip mall. But don't let that deceive you! This place has a really dynamic breakfast going for it. My companion had his regular eggs, a pancake or French toast but this time he had a pancake, grits, and bacon or sausage. Me, I have to try Virginia ham wherever I go because, well, I'm visiting Virginia. Got a try ham everywhere I mean for heaven sake I'm in the Smithfield backyard! Hands-down this restaurant had the best grits in Virginia that I tried and I tried grits everywhere I went for breakfast over the past two weeks. Let me qualify that and say this restaurant had the best grits in a privately owned restaurant as opposed to a hotel; there was one other place competing for my top notch grits cookery but it was a hotel chain. I did stop the waitress and ask her what the secret was or how they did it, and she said that she didn't know, it was the cook who did it and it was surprising because everybody comments how great the grits are, and he doesn't even really eat them. Whatever he's doing, he's doing it fantastically! The biscuit was light and fluffy they brought me honey And butter, the eggs were perfect, and I had Virginia ham. Need I say more? In spite of the Yelp listing that indicated it accepted credit cards. In this day and age, any place that does not accept credit cards will not get my business. I was craving standard breakfast fare and, seeing the positive reviews, we decided to come here. Upon entering we noticed the lovely decor and quaintness of an old school diner. I ordered the 2 eggs with sausage, grits and toast, and also ordered home fries. My goodness the food hit the spot and oh boy did I love those grits. Our waitress did seem robotic but it was very busy and she did a good job getting us our food quickly and without any issues. For me it was those grits that stood out and had quite the impact on my Yankee palate. The food here is so good! I had the chicken fried steak which is my go to..best I've ever had! Fried perfectly with a golden crust and the sausage gravy was delish with good amount of sausage bits. I literally licked the plate clean. We also got Eggs my way, blueberry pancakes, and Philly cheesesteak omelete. All very good. Service here is wonderful too: very nice and attentive. Discovers this place using the Yelp app, and decided to give it a try. Food was good, but coffee was weak and the service was poor. Table we set at was dirty, and had to ask someone the wipe it off. They did, but while wiping they left substantial water residue on the table, possibly from dish water the rag she used was in. I had to dry off the table with one napkins they left. Our server didn't ask us if we needed any refills on our drinks, nor did she come back to take my payment. This is a "hole-in-the-wall" spot that did not disappoint. The people are friendly, and go above and beyond to serve you. I got the Philly steak and cheese omelet and I cannot stop thinking about it. I ordered hash browns with it and the server asked if I want onions in it...best decision in my life. The food was amazing. We liked it so much, we came back both days my friends were in town. We're already talking about the next visit we're gonna make. I don't know if they're going to come to see me or eat at Laura's. I don't mind as ling as they take me with them! Was in the area for an event at the Hampton coliseum. Some friends had been here last year and couldn't stop talking about the breakfast skillet, so we had to come. Today is my husband's birthday. So I ordered him breakfast for him and our family. The food was horrid!! No seasoning. No taste at all. Burnt. It was bland. All of the napkins were soaking wet and our utensils, jam and butter were covered in whatever spilled in the bag. The burrito was poorly "wrapped." Food was just thrown in a tortilla and closed but not wrapped. Food was missing from the order and the staff refused to give us a receipt. They were rude and talking down on another customer. This place was recommended by out Airbnb owner and I'm really not sure why. Upon entering we were not greeted by any staff members. This place is tiny so there's no way the server didn't notice us. After about 3 awkward minutes the waitress says curtly "you can sit at any of those tables" and she motions towards the few tables against the wall but none of them had been cleared. Is Laura's going out of business? We've been customers for about a year and a half now. The recent visit to Laura's was a changing experience for the worst. Warning signs started with the lack of a soda fountain use despite having one. I understand things happen. I was in the industry for about half a decade. But to display Coke products and provide us with some weird cola with a horrible aftertaste and to charge us at Coke prices is ridiculous. When I asked about the soda, the waitress insisted that is was Coke and attempted to disprove me by pulling up a generic can that said "Cola" on it. Just admit that it wasn't Coke and move on. But to openly lie to me and say I'm incorrect should've indicated we weren't wanted there. For the remainder of our wait she avoided us at all costs. It took forever to get water to replace that horrible tasting liquid because she would intentionally avoid contact with us. For an order of Eggs, Sausage and toast to take nearly thirty minutes (when we were the only new table that wasn't eating) is insane. All the while I noticed how drastically the cleanliness of the restaurant had diminished, I'm fairly certain the cleanliness is not up to par and we started to leave. Before we could walk out we were given our food. Overcooked eggs, soggy toast, grainy grits and sausage that clearly saw better days. It's bad when you say the bread was probably the only edible item on the plate. Everything else was incredibly unseasoned, over or undercooked and overall disappointing. All the while the staff talked about how excited they were to close. The aftertaste of that mystery liquid still is in my mouth as I head home to brush my teeth again. Laura's lost a customer today. I'm concerned with the sanitation of the place, the quality of the food and the staff in general. I used to reccomend them, I cannot say I feel this way anymore. Final note. Please don't lie and then challenge your customers to prove your lie. People are smarter than you think. read more
