This is a no-frills CASH ONLY (so come prepared, there is a family dollar with an ATM in the same shopping center) breakfast/lunch diner with down-home food and friendly service. It's not a large place but the kind servers make you feel right at home. The food is nothing fancy but it's good down-home cooking. We enjoyed the pancake (nice and fluffy) western omelette with potatoes and toast, and my husband had the breakfast burrito with grits. All the food was good and it was all served with a smile. Made sure we had cream for coffee, jam for toast and butter and syrup as well as making sure we had refills for drinks. Nice, homey place.

Cant get any more Southern than chicken fried steak, eggs, biscuits n gravy, EXCELLENT!!

Genuine local eatery with home made appeal, great service in a friendly environment, meals have down to earth prices. Highly recommend.

Laura's Rise and Shine is the kind of place you almost don't want to tell people about--because it's such a hidden gem that you want to keep it all to yourself. Tucked into the Buckroe Shopping Center, this little diner is pure comfort from the moment you walk through the door. The space is tiny, cozy, and full of character. The walls are covered in fun little signs that give it that lived-in, hometown feel. The vibe is ultra-casual, and the staff couldn't be more welcoming. The waitresses greet you like family and bring that unmistakable Southern charm that makes you feel like you belong--even if it's your first visit. They only serve breakfast and lunch, and they do it right. My go-to is the country fried steak breakfast--seriously, it's soooooo good. Crispy, savory, smothered in gravy, and served up with all the fixins. You won't leave hungry. Just a heads-up: this is a cash-only spot, and you won't find alcohol on the menu--just strong coffee and good company. It's a classic greasy spoon diner in the best way possible, and every town needs a place like this. When I'm in the mood for a hearty breakfast, this is where I'm headed, no question. If you're local--or even just passing through--you owe it to yourself to stop by and see what makes this place such a beloved staple.

The environment was a bit older than I expected but cute for the price of the food. Some of the food was frozen or canned you can taste the high blood pressure but it was great! Especially if you want something simple/basic/tasteful all in one. The waitress was awesome very nice.

    Pancake Combo #2 I think?

Super quick service yet the food was pretty yummy and the waitress was super nice ! Would definitely recommend if you like diner style breakfast

Downing Hampton has a hole in the wall, found in a strip mall. But don't let that deceive you! This place has a really dynamic breakfast going for it. My companion had his regular eggs, a pancake or French toast but this time he had a pancake, grits, and bacon or sausage. Me, I have to try Virginia ham wherever I go because, well, I'm visiting Virginia. Got a try ham everywhere I mean for heaven sake I'm in the Smithfield backyard! Hands-down this restaurant had the best grits in Virginia that I tried and I tried grits everywhere I went for breakfast over the past two weeks. Let me qualify that and say this restaurant had the best grits in a privately owned restaurant as opposed to a hotel; there was one other place competing for my top notch grits cookery but it was a hotel chain. I did stop the waitress and ask her what the secret was or how they did it, and she said that she didn't know, it was the cook who did it and it was surprising because everybody comments how great the grits are, and he doesn't even really eat them. Whatever he's doing, he's doing it fantastically! The biscuit was light and fluffy they brought me honey And butter, the eggs were perfect, and I had Virginia ham. Need I say more? It was just a good awesome delicious feeling breakfast. No wonder I gained 6 pounds in two weeks. Thank you Virginia!

Our favorite breakfast place in the area. Everything that we've eaten here in our three years in the area has been excellent. The coffee is good too. Friendly and attentive staff.

I'm good with tipping extra here as the service earns it, but I didn't care for how the bill showed up. If you haven't been to 185 on Little Florida Road in Poquoson, you are seriously missing out. This charming, family-owned neighborhood gem is everything a great local restaurant should be and then some. The moment I walked through the door, I felt it. You're not just a customer here; you're a guest. The welcome was immediate and genuine and set the tone for the whole experience before I even sat down. I ordered the brisket sandwich with sweet potato fries, and wow, it delivered. I was surprised the blackberry chipotle sauce worked BERY WELL! The brisket was tender, flavorful, and clearly made with care. Paired with perfectly seasoned sweet potato fries, it was the kind of meal that sticks with you long after you leave. This isn't reheated, thrown-together food, you can taste the love and craft in every bite. It was like Woman Power this morning with all ladies from front to back. Their whole vibe was awesome from the front of the house to the back. I have to give a very special shoutout to my waitress, Tiffany... she was absolutely AWESOME. Looks like 185 was ranked #87 on Yelp's Top 100 Restaurants in 2023, and after my visit, I completely understand why. From the moment we walked into Oceanview Diner, we felt at home. There was an immediate warmth--like stepping into what America is supposed to feel like--people talking, laughing, and genuinely connecting over good food. The attention to detail was impossible to miss. Fresh-cut flowers sat on each table, adding a simple but thoughtful touch. Before our meals even arrived, we were served homemade herb focaccia with olive oil--an unexpected and appreciated gesture. And yes, even the water stood out. Being near the ocean, you often get that slightly earthy taste, but this water was clean, crisp, and clearly filtered. Now, the food. I ordered the Parmesan-crusted chicken with roasted potatoes and collard greens. The chicken was juicy (not dry at all) and cooked perfectly--something that sounds simple but is rarely executed this well. The collards were good, though I personally would've liked just a touch more salt and a splash of vinegar to bring them fully to life. My partner ordered the fried flounder with asparagus and mashed potatoes and had nothing but praise. Not a single morsel was left on the plate, which tells you everything you need to know.
