I went here for the first time in July 2023. When we approached, the line was outside the door and with people pelvic to pelvic on the inside. This place is very old school, simple, serving cakes, milkshakes, patties, and ice cream. When we got closer to the door, an employee yelled and said we are messing up the refrigerators by keeping the door open (he wasn't very nice). So, we closed it, when we went inside, there could've been two lines, but there was one crooked line. Apart from the outdated ambience, no seating area, and mean employee, once we got to the front, we were greeted by happy teenagers who took our order and gave us delishiousness. I made a friend on the line who bought 2 pints and got 1 free cone because of the purchase, and he gave it to me. It was grape nut.. YUMMY! I would go again because of the taste, and would love to see more locations pop up in different boroughs! We've ordered from these folks a number of times on Grubhub and have always been extremely satisfied. We've never been to the actual store but I have called over there a few times with some questions on flavors and ingredients and they have always answered the phone politely, professionally and have been wonderfully courteous so I don't get where the prior bad service reviews are coming from. Our order yesterday arrived as it always does; on time, perfectly hand packed and placed expertly in paper bags with each container clearly marked as to the flavor. The driver was super cool as well. Here's the best part; their ice creams and sherbets are out of this world delicious and have become a favorite of ours. The Cherry Vanilla is superb as is the Vanilla Fudge which we tried for the first time. Just the right amount of fudge mixed in so it does not overpower the yummy vanilla ice cream. Never before have I been to such an unusual ice cream shop, and let me tell you, it felt as if I had to travel to another planet in order to find it. Beginning my journey in Park Slope in search of other foods, I decided to take advantage of my Brooklyn "trip" and walk all the way to Flatbush due to my cheapness and antagonism towards the subway system. Walking in here I was surrounded by cakes propped up on the walls, jars upon jars of various cookies, and a smattering of signs offering weird things like "Jamaican cheese" and "No returns on ice cream." There are the standard flavors, but I decided to get three in a cup for $4.75; little did I know that the cup was almost literally pint-sized! I chose Irish Moss which had a lot of tasty nutmeg in it, grape nut which was literally strewn with softened grape nuts, and soursop, which to me might indeed the durian of the Caribbean. The ice cream, overall, is great, but one point which should be taken into serious consideration is its fast melting point. Though it starts off so hard you can barely dig your plastic spoon into it, it quickly begins drip-dropping (in my case it got all over my pants without my noticing until later when it had dried and my pants looked like Monica Lewinski's dress). Despite the close proximity of this place to my residence I have only been here once before but it was many years ago. After a harrowing long work week I went for my vice of unadulterated iunk food and had this brilliant idea to treat myself to some ice cream. A yoing man inside was courteous to open the door as I approached and I was surprised to see so many people inside. I soon realized the young man and other people were friends to one of the ice cream servers so I was able to observe the flavors and get to the counter quickly. I patiently waited for this overweight guy to move as he greedily lapped at his ice cream cone which made me jealous! A teenage looking boy took my order with no complaint and was very mannerly, professional and quick; color me impressed! For a pint $5.99, I got a nice mixture (Pralines w Cream and Oreo) and when I attacked it at home it was quite soft and delectable. I enjoyed it and as only upset when it was soon gone. I sent my friend in to get me some ice cream and when he came out he told me the guy was very rude so I called and ask why was he being rude he cursed me out and slammed the phone down in my ear. I grew up in Flatbush and used to come here every weekend. When we moved out to Queens, I would drive here just for the ice cream. The best flavor is Grape Nut. I caught myself buying vanilla ice cream and Grape Nut cereal to recreate the flavor. Not sure what I was thinking. Next time I'm in the area, I will get some. I agree with one of the other Yelpers. Taste of Tropics has been one of my favorite spots in Brooklyn for years. Nothing beats the taste of their ice cream and cakes. A few years ago, I ordered a rum raisin cake for my mom and she loved every bite of it. More recently, I returned to purchase a small cake for my boyfriend's birthday and was met with excellent service and a yummy great nut cake. The cake was the smallest size, about 6" and cost $20.95 (cheaper and tastier than Baskin Robbins!). The staff was able to make the cake for me in less than 2 days which I appreciate. When I went to pick it up, the staff member expressed to me that customer service is vital to the business and he tries to accommodate everyone as much as possible. At the moment, he had just agreed to make a cake at very short notice for a customer. Now that's service! My only wish is that they had more than one location. After they closed their shop on Utica, it's become a bit of a travel to get to them. If you don't have to buy their ice cream in the supermarket, go directly to the shop, you won't regret it! read more

The ice cream was great but the service was terrible. We went on Saturday evening and my husband went in to purchase the ice cream while I stayed in the car since there was no parking. One of the clerks was very rude to my husband asking why was someone white in the store? My husband was very hurt by not feeling welcomed in the store but knows black people go through this far more often since he has heard many of my experiences with nyc retail. He knew I wanted the ice cream so he explained to the discriminatory clerk that he's had grapenut ice cream before and that his wife was Jamaican. I couldn't believe that he even dignified the response with an answer. As a Jamaican I believe out of many one people and running a store you should follow that motto and treat everyone the same regardless of race. I know race relations are bad right now but my husband is one of the good ones and was treated like shit at this store tonight. We both want to support black businesses especially during covid but black businesses shouldn't make it difficult to support them because their white. By the way my husband liked the ice cream as well but said the grapenut at Devon House was better, something I'm sure the clerk wouldn't even expect him to know.
