I have yet to try a boba tea here, but I am hooked on their Taiwanese popcorn chicken which they call "Karate Chicken". It's the freshest I've had. Juicy, flavorful, just enough crunch and never greasy, the right amount of residue oil, and the powdered spices on top absorb fully, never gritty or grainy (which I've found elsewhere). Plus they include fresh basil leaves unlike other places around. And portion is big for only $5.50. Service here is usually friendly and helpful. Tables could be wiped more often. ONLY PROBLEM, AND IT'S A BIG ONE...Make more dipping sauces please. Ketchup on popcorn chicken?! Why even offer that? Make a garlic aioli and/or a chipotle aioli. Boba is life. There are so many different boba places nowadays but Tastea has always been a very sturdy staple in the Boba wheelhouse. This particular location is always bustling with business but they are very efficient about getting orders out without having too long of a wait. Today I tried their Muddy Melon drink. Its an organic black tea topped with fresh watermelon juice. Had some grass jelly add on. It was delightfully refreshing, with little chucks of watermelon in each sip. I always pick up some of the Karate Chicken and an order of their Buttload'a Fries. The food lives up to their names. They give you a choice of how spicy you want your chicken and their fries come in a decent size. If you're feelimg snacky, it will definitely do a little more than just hold you over. Came here today (10/08/14) for a free gigantic drink. They were having a deal from 5-7 pm, where students with their UCI ID got a free gigantic sizes drink. I ended up ordering the "even more" size for an extra 50 cents, and boba for 50 cents. So my total came out to be $1.00. $1 for a drink that is usually $3.90 is a deal! So after I paid, I went over to the counter to wait for my drink. I was very impressed at how fast my drink was made. However, when I went to get my drink, I realized it was only the "gigantic" size, not the "even more" size. I tell the girl that I had paid for an "even more" and she checks on the computer. She apologizes then hands my drink off to anther girl to "re-make." I'll explain why "re-make" is in quotes in a bit. Now, I understand it was crazy busy and that mistakes happen. We're all human. I'm totally fine with waiting for my order to be fixed. However, I'm totally NOT ok with just dumping my drink from the "gigantic" size into an "even more" size and then adding more ice to make it look like the cup is filled. I did not pay an extra 50 cents for just extra ice. If I wanted to pay for ice, I would just go to the supermarket next door and buy a 10 pound bag of ice. My update is based on multiple visits. Okay, decor is still cute. I absolutely love the branding. The OG location is my favorite. But why oh why can't this place get it right? Their rewards card is horrible! Wish they would switch over to Five Stars. I can't believe I had to deal with it on two separate occasions (Once for my friend and this most recent time for myself) I'd like to request back that five minutes of wasted time in my life back. Rewards Card Steps: 1. Verbally request card (buy something and it gets swiped. no points will be accumulated during this time) Alternatively, you may request the card and have them charge for h20 at zero balance and hand you the card. (They will never ask you if you want one, at least it hasn't happened to me] 2. Now you must go to the website provided on the card to active the card and fill out your personal information ie: address, birthdate, phone # (I bet they can't just punch in your # to give you credit like Five Stars can) 3. Wait back in line; put in your order request, pay and hand card over. So inefficient! Note: They won't willingly share Step 1 or 2 without the asking. Onward with service. I want to say that service is outstanding and the delightfully knowledgable staff is helpful.. NOT! I found out after receiving my order, that boba was missing from my drinks. When inquiring about the missing boba, my friends and I received the most unkind reaction and this was how it went down without any word/eye contact. 1. Alerted a staff regarding missing boba 2. Staff checks order and grabs drinks and dumps boba in new cups and tea to new cup 3. Placed back on counter 4. Walks away - with annoyed look on her face I totally get it was not your mistake but please acknowledging the patron. How inconsiderate. That would make anyone walking out of a boba place unhappy, and I don't like walking out of a boba place unhappy! Advisory to the staff: Please identify that change is necessary! On another note, the supervisor for the day was kind enough to explain how the rewards card points expires after two months. What you need to know: - Come here for refreshing and fruity tea selections - When they offer you a receipt, always take it (your order has a 50% chance of being incomplete) - Parking lot is available - They do offer a rewards card- Points expire every two months and the process in getting one is a bit of a pain - Be prepared to deal with 50% chance of negative /positive experience. This review is for their golden milk tea only. The golden milk tea didn't taste artificial at all. It had a nice balance of sweet and milkyness , definitely the best milk tea I had yet in Cali. The boba tho had no form of their own and sort of melted in my mouth in a disgusting slimy way. 3/5 I also got their lychee storm. First time here and didn't know what to get. Im not really fond of teas because they're too bitter for me so I asked the cashier for a recommendation and she recommended the peach me sweet tea. Peach me sweet tea is one of the most popular drinks. It was just the right amount of sweet where it's not bitter and not overwhelming either. Should've gotten light ice though. The drinks came out before the food, but that's expected. Employees are quick in serving the drinks. They are very prompt and efficient. The chicken is shaped weird which makes me question its quality and their fries are greasy AF but I find myself craving this food more than I should - I think its the seasoning. I came to Tastea for the very first time. Recommended by a dozen friends and my co-workers, and thought it should be EPIC from all their amazing stories and totally worth the try. I noticed a chalkboard wall close to the bathroom, where someone doodled a scene from the Disney movie UP, which this talented person even colored every balloon that carried the house. Bravo! I saw the menu and didnt know what to order, I had mentioned to the servers that it was my first time, and they stood there motionless and speechless. No smiles, no help, no reassurance, nada whole lot.. So I took a stab and went with a Mango/Raspberry. No boba and nothing fancy. The Hubbster met up with me after hitting Subway, and ordered a Matcha (green tea) which he enjoyed immensely. Good for him. Drinks were sweet and satisfying. I just didn't quite understand the hype of this place. Its as good as any other juice place, whether its decadent or super healthy. Tastea definitely markets to those individuals who are into the juice scene where posting "Tweet-able" or "Instagram-able" refreshments are cool. (no pun intended). Nonetheless, its a great place to hang out. I can see this place killing it in the summertime for sure. Perks: Menu is inviting to come back for more flavors and to try food items like their popcorn chicken. This one is so much cleaner and a little bit more better-looking than the GG location. The staff is nice. My drinks came out really quickly and of course, delicious. It's the same distance from my house to the GG location, but i have to take the freeway to this one, so i'm not quite sure if I would rather go here. But the drinks are always delish. I used to go to Tastea back in my college days when I went to UCI. I don't really see any Tasteas outside of Orange County so it's been a while since I had this. Honestly the last time I did was probably after my graduation lol so like 6 years ago! I always get the same thing though, and after all these years it still tastes pretty much how I remember it. In almost all boba shops, I get some sort of milk tea or some drinks with milk in it.. but for some reason at Tastea I always get the Peach Me Sweetea. I think they do fruit drinks very well, so I never really tried anything else. It's very refreshing and even has tiny chunks of fruit in the drinks! So even though I don't get boba, I always use the big boba straws to suck up those suckers. The "karate chicken" lol or just regular crispy/popcorn chicken is also pretty good. They are open late so after getting some Ramen, headed over to give it a try. Walking in, it was so clean & refreshing-looking. Almost cute with the decor on the walls. The two sizes they had are Gigantic (regular) & Even More (Large) lol. I ordered the Jasmine Green Milk Tea with Boba. It was pretty good. They have an option for Honey instead of Boba, instersting. Never heard of it before so I stuck with what I knew. BOBA. lol. The service was friendly & quick. The only observation I had is that the straw had a sharp end but they used actual lids on their cups, not the plastic BBT covering you have to pierce through. So no shaking it up before drinking. Sitting in a boba place reminds me of the good ol' days in high school, so I tend to not sit there long enough anymore since I'm starting to feel old (just kidding, sorta). I love their drinks, especially Watermelon Heaven. It's my favorite because they use REAL watermelon! When you're nearing the end of your drink you see the watermelon on the bottom of the cup! It tastes so refreshing after a hot day/meal/anytime really. Sometimes I get their Yummy Gummy if I feel like having one of their smoothies - this one reminds me of the White Gummy you can order from Jamba Juice. As a fruit and slush junkie, this place has one of the best fruity, boba, jelly drinks I've had around the OC. I came late one night and got the Amazing Strawburst drink, which is a strawberry, raspberry slush with honeydew, rainbow jelly. It was awesome -- the slush had a thick, fruit flavor to it -- you can hardly taste the frozen ice, which, unlike other places, can sometimes overpower a drink and make it mostly water and ice than fruit. They were very generous with the jelly portion, lots of honeydew and rainbow jelly with a delicious flavor. Staff was nice and the place seemed chill to hang out in. There's also a selection of bite-sized snacks and sides, ranging from fried shrimp, chicken, to fries. We got the "mild but wild" chicken bites. You can choose from five levels of spiciness and I got the least spicy because I'm a wimp. Wow, these chicken bites were actually moist and crispy at the same time. Based off looks, I expected them to be slightly dry but even as a late night visitor, their fried chicken tasted freshly fried, which I can't say happens most of the time when I order fried foods. Hubby and I have always liked Tastea, and have gone to all of their locations. We've been coming to the Costa Mesa location more often ever since it relocated itself. It's tucked in the corner between Ramen Yamadaya, Confetti, and Stater Bros. Service has always been polite. Tea is great. The amount of ice they've put in the drinks has been better (it used to be up to the top with nothing but ice). I'd still say that one should get a smoothie versus just straight iced tea. Popcorn chicken = yumminess. Buttload-a fries? Deadly if you're on a keto diet. But sooo good. Some of the clientele is pretty immature. I can't believe I haven't already reviewed Tastea. This is my absolute number one favorite boba place! You can't go wrong here, they have everything from plain teas to milk teas to their specialteas. Sunset peach is really good, especially with the green mango bits. The prices are decent for the regular sizes (the large I have to say is quite expensive). The rewards program actually rewards you. I'm not sure how exactly it worked, because I went three times on spring break after being away for several months and each time I visited I happened to have rewards to use? Not complaining though. Free (or cheaper) Tastea is never something to complain about. Being in Costa Mesa, you avoid all the Westminister traffic/parking hullabaloo blocking the path to delicious boba. It's in an extremely convenient location right off the 405 and 73. The store itself is clean, and although small, always seems to have enough seating. The staff are extremely friendly and quick, and will help you with any questions you may have about their products. I feel like I can't say enough good things about Tastea! I've been to many other boba places and for some reason they can't seem to compare to Tastea. The toppings options are just delicious, and you feel super healthy drinking organic tea with real fruit in it. Also, red and green boba for Christmas season is pretty unique. I don't if it's due to new employees or employees not caring about the quality they produce but their drinks have not represent what Tastea stands for. One time my wife ordered a Golden Milk Tea and it was soo bland, it tasted like water and creamer mixed with food coloring to give it that tea color. The second time was today, we ordered two hot milk tea (which is a great idea and we love them btw) that was late upon arrival and was not filled close to the top. I understand leaving room but when you include a stopper for the lid, that usually negates filling the cup 90% of the way. Tastea wasn't as amazing as I expected it to be. Going in, I had high hopes especially since all my buddies have been recommending this place to me for awhile now. I feel like I was long overdue, but I still wanted to see what the hype was all about. I came right on opening time and I was the first customer to order. At a glance, most of their menu centers around premium fruit teas, so if you love refreshing fruity drinks, then Tastea is definitely more up your alley. Personally, I usually get my fruit flavored teas on hot sunny days and when I need to quench my thirst. I'm definitely more of a herbal milk tea guy and I was in the mood for a sea salt drink so I took a stab at their Salted Cream Jasmine tea. Little bit of the sea salt foam was dripping out of the cup so I licked it to see what the foam tasted like, and holy crap -- this one tasted super salty and borderline sour. Like straight from a can of Morton's iodized salt. Kinda turned me off, but I figured maybe the sweetness of the Jasmine tea would balance out, but after I mixed it, the drink just tasted way to salty for my taste. Sea salt drinks are supposed to taste mostly sweet, with a hint of salty but this one just had a sharp salty taste. Not a fan. Boba was green, which was a nice touch, but it was also way too soft without much chewiness. Their boba pearls aren't sweet either, and are mostly pretty bland. I might return in the future, since I feel like trying just their brewed teas doesn't do this place justice. I also heard they serve really good popcorn chicken so maybe I'll try it down the line. However, the saltiness of their cream just left a really bad first impression, and their boba pearls were still really disappointing. ---- The Verdict: Don't come here if you're looking for good milk teas or good boba pearls.
