I stopped by because I was already in the area and wanted to check out a newer spot. They're approaching their one-year anniversary, so they're still fairly new. When I visited, there was a decent line, and the café was quite busy. There isn't dedicated parking, so you'll likely need to find street parking in the surrounding neighborhood and walk over. There is plenty of outdoor seating available, along with a smaller indoor seating area. I ordered the Guava Range from the seasonal menu, which is described as a guava matcha latte topped with mascarpone cream, guava purée, and ceremonial-grade matcha. I was especially excited to try it because guava matcha isn't something you come across often. Unfortunately, my drink didn't quite match the description. If there was guava purée included, I couldn't see or taste it. The only guava element I noticed was a light dusting on top of the cream. The mascarpone cream also overpowered the matcha, making it difficult to taste. Overall, the drink came across more like very lightly flavored milk than a guava matcha latte. For a drink that cost around $9-10, I was hoping for more balance and a stronger presence of the advertised flavors. That said, they're still a relatively new business, and growing pains are understandable. I didn't have time to stay and try any food, but everything coming out of the kitchen smelled great. Since it was busy, I also don't feel I can fairly comment on the service based on this visit alone. So glad to finally have tried Salty Horse, and it definitely met the hype - the ambiance, drinks and food all were great! We got the Campfire French Toast and Cowboy Steak Fries and honestly enjoyed both. The french toast was yummy -- not overly sweet, topped with fruit and graham cracker crumbles for that little crunch that totally fits the campfire theme. The steak fries were solid, though the steak came out a touch more done than the medium we ordered -- minor thing overall. For drinks, we ordered the Coco Drift and Jasmine Coast -- the names alone are cute and very on brand. Coco Drift was my order and it was a seasonal item, but I hope it becomes permanent one day. I'm a huge coconut water matcha person and this met my standards - super refreshing, and the matcha and coconut water were balanced from each other. This place is really relaxing to come with a small party (4 or less) for in-person dine in. They don't have large tables so anything larger might be a challenge to find seating (open seating based on availability). The table turnovers seem pretty quick though. Very little indoor seating and limited/shaded outdoor seating. Overall it's a nice place to grab a small bite to eat and a drink for lunch. I wouldn't recommend the grilled chicken sandwich (fried is probably better), because the chicken was really dry and it made the sandwich taste dry overall. The steak frites and Cali burrito, on the other hand, were decent and my friends liked these entrees as well! Their French fries are SUPERB, it's the perfect crisp on the outside and has that crunch when you bite in to it. I ordered the Berries and Cream matcha drink and it was good but nothing amazing for me. I also tried the one with banana foam and didn't like it too much. We were able to find a table to eat at immediately after ordering and there wasn't a line. Not sure how it is on a weekend though. Chicken Caesar Wrap (3/5): underwhelming and fell a bit flat in terms of flavor for their caesar sauce. Didn't love this one but it was alright to eat. Steak Sandwich (5/5): Wow this was so delicious! Steak was really juicy, tender, perfectly cooked, and flavorful. Everything blended together really well and I thought this was a great portion. Very messy to eat though so beware! Fries were good but nothing crazy. Banana Matcha (5/5): This was so good! They sifted the matcha powder before whisking it and it wasn't gritty at all. Matcha was a nice strong flavor while still being smooth and a bit nutty w oat milk. Foam wasn't artificial banana which was yummy. I liked that it was a banana pudding esque matcha. My friend and I went on a Monday at noon and it was packed. We were able to snag a table after people got up to leave, but they didn't bus their own table, so we had to take their plates to the bussing area. There were no employees to be found to clean the table. It would be nice if they had an employee whose sole job it is to clean tables and clear the bin of dirty plates - it was stacked sky high when we left. It was about a 30 min wait in line but after that I got my food and drinks in about 10 minutes. I tried their matcha tea and the Hawaiian cowboy. The matcha was solid, nothing to write home about but the Hawaiian cowboy was a surprise! I expected it to be overly sweet but it was perfect! You can taste the honey and the walnut milk and it has a unique flavor. Personally I like a stronger coffee flavor so while I would order this again I would definitely add an extra espresso shot to it. I ordered the salty red breakfast burrito and it is a must try! From the first bite I was hooked. The pastor had a really great flavor that paired so well with the creamy avocado, crispy tots, and the rest of the components. the two salsas that they provide were both delicious but not needed, the burrito can hold its own! The green salsa had a nice freshness to it and the chipotle crema had the tiniest of kick but was pleasant. The vibe of this place is, as they say, immaculate. There is very limited inside seating but outside is where it's at. The patio is spacious and so gorgeous with the choices of decor fitting in perfectly and creating a relaxing atmosphere and one that I would love to come back to. We skipped coffee but got two dishes for breakfast and a banana bread slice. The banana bread is insane. This is the greatest banana bread in California it is dense and sweet and has ICING! Salty horse, I hate how much I crave you...especially when I need something quick. It's one of the newer coffee shop / cafes in Costa Mesa and is still on the Hot List as the line is 15 min minimum on random Tuesday at 11 am. (Does anyone work anymore!? ) The longest I waited was an hour but that was 3 weeks after opening. And I can tell you, as long as you have the time it will be worth it. The overall aesthetic is coastal cowboy meets rustic modern. There is a ton of seating with a great outdoor patio. Parking in the back is pretty slim, so your best bet is street parking. You can either get lucky or park around the block, depending on the day / time. My absolute favorite coffee is the Hawaiian Cowboy. It flavor profile is a nutty tasting honey that's refreshing yet not overly sweet. You can actually taste the espresso without it being too powerful. This coffee is worth the wait. Their other drinks are also good, but this one takes the cake. They have a pretty expansive food menu as well, so it's much more than "just a coffee shop". And you can't forget about their baked goods. O M G. It's from a local bakery (sift bakery) who makes the best non basic treats around. I like that is located away from Triangle Square area so it was easy for me to get to and find parking on the street. It is very charming inside and the door inside opens widely to the outside so you get a lot of fresh air while dining inside. The line is still a little long on the weekends, but it's a new popular spot so just deal with it. Theres only street parking given it's located in a neighborhood. They have an extensive menu with breakfast and lunch items. For food we got the avocado toast, açaí bowl, and cali burrito with chicken. The food came out fast and I'd say the portions are shareable. Got the breakfast burrito with soyrizo ($17) and the spicy Caesar salad ($12). The burrito had just the right mix of ingredients IMHO, grilled on the outside and came with two salsas. The salad was very interesting, a little spicy, with a nice crunch. I'm glad I split the burrito and the salad and would totally do that again. They have seating indoors and outdoors. It gets totally slammed on the weekend mornings (they were out of knives because they were so busy), so you may want to come on a weekday for breakfast if possible. (By 10:30am on Saturday, the line outside had doubled.) I was worried parking would be an issue, but there's plenty of street parking in the neighborhood. read more
