The reviews are abysmal, but I had to try this place at least once. My review is for my ice cream sundae and my family's two good banana milkshakes. This isn't the cleanest place, and it is on par with the shops you would walk into on the boardwalk in Ocean City. "There is nothing in the world finer than a well cooked hot dog--nothing." --Ben Franklin Tastee Freeze in North Beach can deliver a well cooked hot dog, but you'll have to endure being treated like a petulant teenager rather than a customer if you want a tastee treat at this Tastee Freeze. Although for a hot-dog aficionado disappointment may be in store since the method of cooking at Tastee Freeze is to split the dog all along the length for "quicker cooking". I'm partial to a dog that has spent time on the grill and comes off NOT disemboweled, but I'm willing to overlook that particular method of cooking in a foot-long crisis. I was ALSO willing to overlook all the snarky signs placed all over the establishment---"Bathrooms are for customers ONLY!!!" (Yeah yeah I could overlook that I suppose), "Old Bay on fries 25 cents EXTRA!", Kids meal comes only with this and NOT that---etc etc. HOWEVER when I was told I could only have 4 ketchup packs for a take-out order of a large fry and a foot-long per the owners orders--it was WAR! Granted I've been known to smother my hot dog in catsup (no comments from the mustard snob/peanut gallery please :D) but I'm willing to cut down on the catsup pack usage when times are tight. BUT 4 PACKS!!! That's like giving a man who walked across the Sahara with no flask a thimble full of water at the oasis!! That's telling John Hancock that he can only use one square inch of space to sign his--well---his John Hancock! That's telling Las Vegas showgirls to skimp on the sequins! With this Tastee Freeze seeing large gaps in the waves of people coming in for frozen treats, the owners would be better off focusing their efforts on training the VERY young foodservice staff to clean the dining area during off times rather than bean counting catsup packs. If I'm going to indulge in fast food and savor it I'm going somewhere that doesn't bean count the ketchup packs or force the take-out customer to drown their fries with a pump bottle in-store. Its a dang shame too cause Tastee Freeze as a chain can rarely do wrong--from hotdogs to dipped top cones they usually make things straight out of fond childhood memories. I'd like to support small business/franchise owners but unfortunately this particular Tastee Freeze has officially earned a spot on my boycott list for poor customer relations, rather messy serving area and slow food service. So, you think you're going to get a tasty hot dog, do ya? Not so fast, pilgrim. Greasy, underpaid teenagers who never wash their hands are fixing you strange smelling food... That's a bit of local culture! Well.. culture in the bacterial sense, anyhow. I was first made aware of this location by my wife, who already had it on her boycott list. I rapidly followed suit for a few reasons. 1. Cleanliness issues : Bayfront shack or not, there were some surfaces that haven't seen cleaning well before I wrote my name in the dust on the windowsill... six months after my first visit, I can still see my finger signature. Employees that are more greasy than the french fries. 2. Manners. Aforementioned greasy teens seem to communicate best with grunts spelled in three letters or less. "uh?" "Grb" "nuh". 3. Cash Register Accuracy / Communications. There are buttons with different items marked on most fast food cash registers... this is for the employee to press a cheeseburger, when a patron orders a cheesburger. the standard numbers from 0-9 plus decimal points seem to be a smidgen too complex for our greasy cave-teen. The first time I purchased an order of fries and a soft serve cone, he tried to charge me 9 dollars and change... when both items were less than 3 bucks apiece! - what's worse, he argued (in best possible simian speak... not unlike Koko the gorilla using sign language to summon her orange kitten by saying Apple Nipple Monkey.) 4. Rude signs everywhere. "Bathrooms for Customers Only", and "Bay Seasoning $.25" and "Absolutely NO substitutions." 5. No credit card machine. C'mon, get with the program! Plastic has been around for over 30 years now! 6. The fries were cooked in old oil... I wouldn't go so far as to call it rancid, but "mighty ripe" is fair. If you're going to charge extra for shake-on condiments, I guess this is the way to insure a purchase. Additionally, my wife was told in no uncertain terms that she was forbidden to take more than 4 ketchup packets for a large bag of food (including a foot long hot dog and fries...) when asked for more, she was told an unequivocal, non-debatable NO. That said, if they'd fix a few of those items, I'd go back. Just clean the store, the fryer and the server... have him show a little courtesy, and folks would mob the place. Allow credit card purchases (or at least offer an ATM in the store) and they'd be set for the summer. Ah well... there's always the hot dog ventor on the boardwalk... and he's got funnel cake! Ok, people who are giving this place horrible reviews for the food....I would think common sense would warn you to only get ICE CREAM products at a place called Tastee Freeze! Not hot dogs. Ew. Came here with some friends who live locally and love this place. I had not one but TWO sundaes here (you read that right, one right after the other, no shame in that). Coincidentally, it was the day before I went into labor. Ha. The place isn't the cleanest establishment in the world, but it is quick and CHEAP. Yeah, unfortunately this place only deserves one star and thats only because of the nice lady behind the counter, otherwise they don't deserve any stars. The name of this place is "Dairy Freeze" not Tastee Freeze and if I was Tastee Freeze, I'd be trying to distance myself from this place as much as possible. Where do I begin? Lets start with the prices. You can get a small blizzard from dairy queen for 3.99, this place sells their small "twister" for 2.99. However, they charge $1 for using a credit card or debit card citing bank processing fees. This is BS. Trust me, no bank charges that much for a processing fee and businesses that try to get extra money out of their customers like that should be ashamed of themselves and you should already know their not customer focused. So now that I'm paying the same price as I would for a small Dairy Queen blizzard, lets compare. 1) If you want to compare taste, yuck. While the ice cream here is edible, it's nowhere near the quality of many other ice cream places. Not even close. 2) Portion size, smaller than a small Dairy Queen blizzard which actually makes it more expensive for a lesser product in both quality and quantity. Lastly is the manager who stormed in from outside while I was waiting on my order. As stated, the lady at the counter was nice and pleasant - Older lady with blond hair. And I felt bad for her after watching her manager/owners actions. He looked like he was on drugs or drunk to begin with. Then after he stormed in, he proceeded to clean out the register in front of customers! As he's grabbing money out of the register, he was communicating with the lady who was making my order and I guess he couldn't hear her (take the bluetooth out your ear, Mr. You're so cool!) so when she proceeded to walk towards him to repeat herself he yelled at her to stay where she was and talk louder as he continued emptying the register like a robber. I could think of several adjectives for this guy, unfortunately they all correspond to a part of the male anatomy. Tip: There's another ice cream place a little further down the road in north beach, I think it's called the cold penguin. I am a frequent customer of Dairy Freeze* for about 10 years now and I am always pleased with the service and environment, as well as the food. The first thing the employees do when I walk in is greet me every single time. While I am placing my order the cashier is saying "yes, ma'am" "no ma'am, I apologize". It's nice to see the young generation still have manners left. While I wait for my food, I always see the employees working hard; always staying busy. They come out and clean the tables after individuals leave the table... the only time I've seen any type of "mess" is during their very busy summer days. Save the best for last: THE FOOD! As regular as I am I still can't choose my number one favorite because I've tried different things on their menu and I've NEVER been disappointed. Pros: *Not McDonalds, and sometimes you want a change of pace. * Fries are made fresh nearly every time. * Quite a selection of ice cream items that are good for walking the beach. * Food can be ok. Cons: * Entire store needs to be powerwashed, on the inside. A dirty wet mop run through the place does not constitute clean. At times there hasn't been a clean table in the store and if you look too hard you can just feel this thin layer of grime on many things. * Signs remind you of a control freak kindergarden teacher. Love the concept. Typical burger joint with hot dogs, ice cream etc. Everything is made to order, which is nice, but the flip side is that it takes a little longer than fast food. I'm sure "Dairy Freez" does soft serve and sundaes just fine, but the chicken sandwich my girlfriend and I ordered took a long time for something very simple, was made with underwhelming ingredients, and cost 6 dollars by itself. We got fries and a drink with it, which added up to about 9 dollars, and the fries were the best part by far. They were freshly fried, crispy, and warm. Here is my quick breakdown of this horrible place (which is actually called Dairy Freeze) Pro's: - It looks nice on the outside Con's: - Terrible ice cream. Ok so it is official. People who write reviews over the Internet are obviously a bunch of pathetic journalistic wanna be's. I'm sorry to have to say this, but the people, who have taken the time to write out there reviews on a small little business in North Beach, either must not have a day job or feel better about downgrading others because they weren't loved enough as a child. I am defending the formally known Tastee Freeze (now known as Dairy Freeze) because I realize that people who simply have nothing better to do with their lives than to write crappy online reviews should be called out on how pathetically hard they have fallen from their journalistic dream. If you are a "true" journalist, then you must understand the meaning of the term irony. What I find so ironic about your reviews are that you obviously aren't qualified to get paid for writing reviews and obtain a professional job as a journalist. But what is even more ironic is the fact that I am, according to Scotto B. (who is probably unemployed himself), a "greasy teenager" with no "manners". I find this quite hysterical seeing as how I will be attending the University of Maryland next fall and participating in the Scholars Program. Oh, I think I should also mention the fact that I have been invited into the prestigious Phillip Merrill College of Journalism as well. Maybe one day I can write a piece about terrible online postings by people who have no job and are insecure about their body image and lack of their own anatomy. Oh, but wait, I'm already writing about that. Guess I am just getting an early start, something you obiviously never had because you had to be enrolled into the "special" programs as a child. I may have some bias being a former employee (something that Scotto B. doesn't know about because he has never been employed anywhere and just writes reviews online all day), but Dairy Freeze is a nice place to stop and treat yourself while enjoying time out on the beach. The service is fantastic and the food is very good. I just believe Scotto B. had a bitch fit on lack of ketchup because he found out that his "wife" is not even real. Seriously, Dairy Freeze is a great place to be on a hot day. We offer an endless amount of ice cream selections and we have delicious food to enjoy. Again, customer service is the number one goal we strive for at Dairy Freeze. We are kind, courteous, well-mannered, and efficient. And as for cleanliness, I can assure everyone that Dairy Freeze may be one of the cleanest places in all of North Beach. Every night and every day, we scrub, mob, sweep, and maintain such a clean environment. It is a great place to go, but unfortunately you might just run into 42 year old Scotto B. and his 12 year old girlfriend. Great job champ! I'm sure your mother still loves you, oh wait she doesn't?
