Traditional breakfast fair. Good & wholesome. Service very friendly & efficient. My one gripe, which I have with most breakfast places, is the hash browns are those shredded potatoes that must come from some wholesaler (not homemade). Stopped here a couple of weeks ago during a family bike ride. We sat outside under some big beautiful trees and ate our lunch. I ordered the Buff & Blue Salad which was great! There was just the right amount of chicken and the dressing was really good! The waitress kept our drinks coming! My son & daughter ordered the BLT and they both said it was tasty! Tate's Place is my favorite restaurant in Northwest Indiana. When I was living in Portage, I would take my daughter there at least once a month. Now we drive from Valpo to Portage to eat there. I have never once had a bad or even mediocre meal there. They have very little turn over so food is always consistent and servers always recognize you. The portions are good, the prices are fair, and the food is delicious. I miss their dinner buffet. They also have great desserts. read more

Good breakfast. Had the scrambled eggs over biscuits with gravy and a side cinapple pancake. Pancake was delicious! Scrambled eggs were good but we're flat, more like an omelette. Would have preferred them nice and fluffy. Hubby had the Mexican skillet and banana nut pancakes. Serving was quite large - he couldn't finish it! Only thing that was really just meh, was the coffee. Yummy food. Fast service. Ridiculously low priced. We jumped off the toll road for something not fast food and found this gem about 1 1/2 miles into town. Well worth the minutes. I had the soup of the day which was chicken salsa and an egg salad sandwich. Both were homemade and delicious. My husband had a crispy chicken salad that came with three chicken tenders and plenty of toppings. Our total bill was $14 The locals know about the place because it was packed! read more

This is my go to breakfast spot. I love it and the service is great! I go often and though they don't remember my name they remember my order and preferences most of the time. Very warm atmosphere and the food is delicious but I'm pretty sure I'm addicted to their coffee, sooo good. I usually get French toast, bacon and eggs. Sometimes I'll get an omelette. Consistently yummy! The wait isn't bad either especially on a Sunday when I usually go. It's worth checking out all the staff are super friendly and most have been around for years. read more

Was looking for a good breakfast in the area & so happy we found Tate's! Even though it was a Sunday morning we were seated quickly, on the outdoor patio which was beautiful. Everyone from the hostess to the waitresses had a smile on their faces despite the place being busy, & they were all very pleasant & attentive. The portions were big! The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because I tried to order a healthy veggie-based egg dish & it was quite greasy. Still tasty though. Sophies??? Sophies closed years ago...and it was not that good. TATE"S Place, on the other hand is GREAT! Norm, the owner is personable and often is in the dining room serving coffee to the guests. They have and excellent Tuna Melt...which I often order for lunch. I meet with a group after church at Nativity and we all like the breakfast. Tate's is also very clean. I often use as a guide of the cleanliness of a restaurant it's bathrooms. Tate's are always clean and fresh smelling...at least the men's as that is what I use. I figure, if the restroom is basically clean, ignoring people can be slobs, then the restaruant should also be clean. I have found this a good barometer when eating out...and my wife and I eat our several times a week, in NW Indiana or the Chicago area. I recommend Tate's Place anytime for a good meal at a reasonable price. Why not 5 stars...they need a bigger parking lot...especially Sunday mornings. read more

Delightful little restaurant in Portage, Indiana. We always go there for breakfast, but I'm sure their lunch and dinners are good as well. It is kind of a small restaurant, and I'm not a fan of the florescent lights, but the staff is awesome!! I think Meh describes this place perfectly. Sure they have decent breakfast, but it's breakfast food. Really that's pretty hard to screw up. The place has Ok service and on a scale of 1-10 I'd give it a 0 for atmosphere. There is nothing at all remarkable about this place. We stopped here while on a road trip to Michigan. The yelp reviews looked promising so we gave it a shot. This place does a lot of business and they do it fast. Although everything was good the thing that stood out most to me was the toast! They're using some damn good bread for the toast and offer a couple of options including cinnamon raisin. Cute atmosphere and not bad prices. Service and food has gone downhill. I have been here quite a few times and the quality is getting bad. On my last visit we had six people and everyone got burnt hash browns with their meal. We were seated by the door even though we didn't want to sit there. A friend and I tried this place for the first time for breakfast. I ordered the country Benedict and a cup of grits. The country Benedict is a biscuit split and grilled with a sausage Patty and poached egg covered in sausage gravy. Sounds like it would be savory deliciousness...not so much, flavorless sausage, way overcooked egg, bland pasty sausage gravy, un seasoned hash browns, and the grits were cold. I don't know when this phenomenon started where restaurants don't season food in the kitchen, but I have run into it several times lately. The excuse is always " some customers like it that way". I hear this lame excuse as I watch every customer in the place salting their food at the table. I doubt I will be back. read more

THEIR WAFFLE FRIES ARE AMAZING!! I got a chicken tenderloin basket and it knocked my socks off. It had about five chicken tenders, waffle fries, coleslaw and your choice of dipping sauce for $6.99. It was SO worth it. I'm a big eater and I could hardly finish it! Their breakfast is awesome too! I love their waffles and the country boy skillet (tip: get it with shredded hash browns).
