So I was strolling down the street, looking for an awesome place to get some new ink, and stumbled upon Tattoo Paradise. I was getting a small hand tattoo, so I didn't set an appointment. I wanted to go for the walk in experience. I ended up working with Scott, and couldn't be happier. The shop person told me there would be a $100 minimum, so the expectation was set on price. The shop was super clean and professional. Scott was a really cool dude, and I enjoyed my time with him. We talked, had some laughs, and I was happy with his work. The fill and line work was on point, and it is healing great so far. I know he's only in town for a little while, but I guess he comes back fairly often, so I'll probably be back to see him again next time. 1st experience: After another shop botched my nose piercing i wanted to try again and I got the other side pierced at tattoo paradise. My piercer was Karl and I told her what had happened, to assuage my anxiety before the appointment she texted me an entire portfolio of her past work. When I got there she was exceptionally friendly, helped me pick out jewelry and was very knowledgeable about all the pieces they had in store. She even told me what size/what jewels would look good with my skin tone. When we went in the back the space was very clean, she showed me her tools were sterile, they came fresh off the sterilization machine and were still warm. As she did the piercing she talked me through the whole thing quickly with no hesitation telling me exactly what she was doing and why. The most shocking part to me was how quick and painless it was. When i got my nose pierced at [redacted other shop] it was excruciating I've never felt physical pain like that in my life and it dragged on for several minutes. Karl was so quick it was a level of professionalism I have never experienced and I have 10 piercings. She was so good I had to write a review but I wanted to wait until it healed to write a review. Because with the first one it looked good until the next day. The healing process has been nice and fast. My nose stopped hurting after a few days. It's healed beautifully and barely even swole initially. Karl also actually listened to me and used a piercing with a longer post so it didn't sink in 24 hours like the last attempt. It also wasn't too tight. Afterwards she gave me expert advice on how to clean my nose and it hasn't been infected once. The entire experience was so professional. I've never had a piercing that went that well and it completely changed my mind about what I deserve as far as piercing experiences go. 2nd experience: I went back again a month later this week to get a cartilage this time my piercer was patty. Patty was also very kind, compassionate and professional. She also helped me pick jewelry based on my piercing, she showed me her tools were sterile, talked me through it and was very quick and painless. I was in and out. Just very smooth experience. I really liked patty too! (She's also very funny lol) My friend went with me both times and also got piercings, a rook with Karl and a cartilage with Patty and both of her piercings also healed well and fast. Tattoo paradise is a little expensive because the piercing is only $40 but all their jewelry runs a bit high but in my opinion it's worth it because the jewelry is really nice! I have a real smoky quartz in my nose and ear. It's also worth it just for the level of professionalism you get. I'd rather pay more and have a professional experience, high quality jewelry and a smooth healing process than a cheaper piercing and have claire's jewelry, someone who inexperienced and roll the dice on whether my piercing is gonna swell/sink/get infected or not. Also side note the concierge/front desk people at that paradise are also very friendly. They also take serious Covid precautions which was nice because at [redacted other shop] their piercer only had a bandana on his face which made me very uncomfortable. Tattoo Paradise certainly does hold their own in a city of walk-ins getting Om symbol ink by artists who sacrifice the aspect of their work they love to serve folks who treat their profession like a fast food joint. The industrial revolution has arrived! There are a lot of reviews about the attitudes of people working there, but I had none of those issues. I actually quite liked everyone who works there, and had some great convo with front and back of the house staff. If you take a genuine interest in humans, and don't treat them like servants, they treat you like humans too! Go figure. I gave tattoo Paradise three stars because I paid $250 (and a $50 tip out of courtesy) for a tattoo that took maybe 30-45 minutes to do. That is by far the most expensive work I've ever had. Additionally, it is the first tattoo that I will need to get touched up (missed filling color in a couple spots, color not consistent in some spaces, some lines not fully connected, lines crossing over). The woman after me came in to get her piece touched up by the same artist. I don't believe this represents the actual quality the artist can produce if they cared, but clearly this was a rush job that I could've gotten anywhere else, better, and less expensive. I know this shop is better than that. I understand the shop is busy, and the folks here deal with a lot of bullshit. It's all love at the end of the day! I appreciate the hustle... but my bottom line is respect and quality of work! I won't go back for work in the future (other than to get touched up), which sucks cause the people who work here are chill! read more

Extremely disappointed. My friends and I came to DC for a couple days and wanted to get a tattoo. We stopped by around 2:30pm and the front desk guy, Drew told us to come back at 8pm but that he'd call me back if anything changed. I didn't receive any call or text all day, so we stayed somewhat local, showed up at 8 just for him to tell us sorry, they couldn't accommodate us. I asked why he didn't call or text like he said he would. He just shrugged it off and said sorry. Very disappointed because if we knew we wouldn't be able to get our work done there, we could have made it somewhere else at an earlier time. It's our last day in town and he knew this. Set up an appointment with Gordie to get a tattoo done in memory of my grandfather. Showed up for my appointment but he was still finishing up with the guy prior to me, which was no biggie. The girl at the front said she'd give me a call if I wanted to go and grab a coffee or something. When it came to the tattoo, he drew up a really sick design - it was ESPECIALLY cool considering I gave him next to no references, outside of "glass eye in a scotch class". Called ahead of time to make sure I could get my septum pierced there today and was told it was good to go. After traveling from across the river to get there, was told they didn't have the tools to pierce a septum. Shop seemed nice and clean, but it would've been nice to for whomever was answering the phone to be more knowledgeable about what services might not be available on the given day. This is a long overdue review. I've been getting Tattooed at Paradise since 2019 and I have nothing but great things to say about this shop, it's staff, and the artists that work there. If you want a quality tattoo in DC, look no further. I've been tattooed by numerous artists at Paradise and they've all been respectful, kind, fun, and knowledgeable about their craft. I think it's important to point out a few things if you're getting your first tattoo. 1) expect to wait, tattooing isn't a science and sometimes appointments run over or your artist might need extra time. 2) do your research, find an artist that you like and make an appointment versus just walking in - try to also find someone who does work that matches your style of choice 3) expect the tattoo to be fairly pricey, tattoos aren't cheap and this is DC - goods and services cost more here as a general rule of thumb. Additionally, most of the tattooers here are well respected and have been doing this for a long time so their work is consistently amazing therefore they might charge more than someone who is new to the craft. 4) don't be afraid to ask, the staff here are more than willing to help and have always been friendly. read more

Had a tattoo done yesterday here; I am a visitor to the area but had a pretty simple script word that I've been wanting, so I wasn't too worried about finding the best artist around. The shop is nice & clean which is obviously the first thing you should look for. However, one star is deducted for TERRIBLE service. The staff (and there were a lot of them) are extremely rude, & act irritated that you have come into the shop. Man do they have attitudes. I felt very rushed and uncomfortable, which isn't how you want to feel before being tattooed. But, because the design was simple and I've been tattooed before, I decided to go forth. My artist was somewhat rude. Not outright, but when I went back (you don't get to meet your artist before), there was no introduction, no asking why I wanted the tat, just "Lie down here and we'll get started". It was kind of odd. That being said, it came out great, he had a light touch, and I really like the ink; it's a clean piece (see my profile for photo). If you don't mind feeling like you're going through a mill and are just a source of income for artists that really aren't all that talented, but can pull off a simple script word nicely, then this is a decent place. I wish I could have given more stars because I really do like my ink, but I'd be wary of getting anything more complicated than a word or some letters that are simple to pull off. So, I researched a few shops in the DC area for my next set of tattoos, and settled on Tattoo Paradise based on criteria that were of interest to me, reviews, and reputation. What I wanted was basically traditional style flash, with some modification - panther and snake fighting surrounded by roses, 3 nautical stars, and an anchor on my forearm to compliment the swallow already there. Waited about a month to write a review to have them heal enough where the work that was done was mostly coming into it's own. I can not say I am remotely satisfied. While the biggest piece (panther and snake fighting) is ok for a 3 star rating on it's own, the quality of shading drops it down to a 2. As for the other 4 pieces - mediocre, sloppy, tending to scar and blowout, and inconsistent work not to be expected from the reputation and cost of this shop - which drops the whole rating to 1. It also lends me to believe the artist does not understand different technics for different areas and type of skin, uses too much voltage, and goes too deep. While this is not my first time at the rodeo (having had 40 hours on the table) - things I learned from my experience at Tattoo Paradise; 01. If your artist feels the need to defend themselves that they know what they are doing - go to another artist, or have them stop what they are doing so that you can explain your expectations, understand them, and have them be able to explain what they intend to do - it's your body, it's permanent, and you are paying for it. 02. If you're not completely sold on the design, placement, or quality of the stencil application - then do it over until it's to your satisfaction - it's your body, it's permanent, and you are paying for it. 03. If your artist feels the need to brag about being fast - well, you're there for quality work, not to ensure that they make their next appointment. Needless to say, speed does not correlate with accuracy. Expect quality not speed trials - it's your body, it's permanent, and you are paying for it. 04. OK OK, quite admittedly, the guy that tattooed me here is a friend of mine. BUT I will fully disclaim that I would definitely not leave a review if I did not have a good experience. When this location opened, my buddy Matt Knopp said he'd often be tattooing here. I was in the market for a new tattoo and Matt told me to come into the shop. I entered the shop and was immediately greeted by the front desk as needles buzzed in the background. Unlike other reviews, I very honestly did not have any negative interaction with the front desk. I had my initial consultation with Matt, during which I told him where I wanted my tattoo and exactly what I wanted, which was basically a copy of a small pendant I own, with some original characteristics. He made a blowup copy of the pendant on the copy machine, and I set an appointment for a week later to actually have the tattoo done. When I came back, Matt had the outline ready for me, and I was pleased with the first thing he showed me. When I described to him the theme of my tattoo (a dove with some sort of Native Canadian influence) he got it instantly and so I didn't even need a second draft. He set about with the tattoo in the actual tattooing room, where just one other person was being tattooed. I sort of liked the "community" atmosphere. While of course having a private room offers, well, privacy, in this case, where I was getting tattooed on my arm, I had no need for privacy. Matt, me, and the other tattoo artist and man getting tattooed spent the whole time socializing and chatting, which I found sort of unusual to my previous tattoo experiences, but in a great way. I loved having the distraction. When Matt was finished with the outline (which is all I'd really asked for), he eyed it with concern and asked if I wanted any shading. I took a peek at his work and thought just the basic black outline a bit plain (which is just what Matt had seen) and so I basically told him to go nuts. He did, and the tattoo turned out to be so much more than I had ever imagined. The shading, which he did entirely freehand, completely makes the tattoo. The end result was spectacular. The freehand shading is gorgeous, and I receive more compliments on this tattoo from strangers than nearly any other of the 7 tattoos I have. There's your objective review. I highly recommend Matt at Tattoo Paradise. He did an amazing job, suggested an improvement to my design and implemented it beautifully, and best of all he did not charge me an arm and a leg. read more

I disagree with some of these other reviews. I had a great experience at the 18th street location. The front of shop staff were willing to listen, and made me feel very relaxed. They did not bs me about what the experience was going to be like... but they were accommodating and understanding. I would recommend this place, and I would recommend Dave as an artist. When I went in, yesterday, the staff were really considerate and listened to my explanation. I was able to email the exact design to the shop where they printed it and showed me a range of sizes until I chose what I wanted. THANK YOU, Dave! You placed the tattoo in such a way that the design compliments the shape of my chest, which was exactly what I had in mind. Yes getting a tattoo is uncomfortable, but Dave was quick, precise and detailed. He helped me to focus on small talk and work through the pain using my breath. It was a great experience. I can see why it could become addictive. I am really stoked with the tattoo. I have already had a lot of comments from people who have seen the pic on facebook. I have wanted a tattoo for more than a decade. Recently I saw a design and immediately knew what I wanted. I chose Tattoo Paradise for the portfolios I saw online. I could see that much of the work was far more detailed and required a lot more skill than the design I wanted, and therefore felt confident that it would turn out how I wanted. I frequent Adams Morgan (shout out to Idle Time Books and Southern Hospitality), so I've seen this shop before, just never had a reason to go in. The evening I went, I called ahead to be sure that I didn't have to make an appointment for a piercing. The gentleman I spoke with not only answered my question (you don't), but gave me additional info on pricing and hours of operation. I swear I spent more time waiting for my ride to pick me up than I spent being serviced! Shortly after I arrived, I was helped by a very friendly artist (didn't catch her name) who explained the different types of jewelry they have and explained, in detail, the cleaning process. Okay, now for the nitty gritty... my friend couldn't come back with me, but when I saw the piercing area, I realized why. It was only big enough to accommodate 2 people. My artist chatted with me, made me feel comfortable, I inhaled, exhaled and I was done! Well, it's been over a year since I got my piercing and here are some updates: -Because I couldn't not fuck with it constantly the first few months, I got the dreaded "bump"--stopped by Tattoo Paradise one day and just asked the people at the front desk to look at it and tell me if it was healing okay. They said, "stop fucking with it." I did, and it healed! A year later I've got a perfectly healed pierced nose. -Last weekend we were at Diner DC for breakfast and I decided to pop in to Tattoo Paradise to see if any new studs caught my eye. I asked someone at the front desk which ones would fit in my piercing, and a super nice and helpful woman named Erica came out to show me and talk to me about my options. I told her that I'd had my nose pierced there a year ago and was looking for something that wasn't so big and clunky inside my nose--I know that for your first piercing they have to use a longer backing thing for healing purposes, but some less-approving people in my life are constantly saying it looks like I have a booger in my nose so I thought I'd see if there was anything more inconspicuous. Instantly she said that now that it's healed I should probably have it re-adjusted, which I didn't even know was a thing. I asked how much that would cost, and she told me it was free--that anybody who is a customer of theirs can come in for stuff like that for free, forever. I was honestly shocked, I mean it was like a $60 purchase--piercing and stud--and I did not expect follow-up stuff like that to be free. I asked if I should call to make an appointment--she told me to just come on back with her right then and there. She took me back, she took the piercing out twice to make adjustments, and sent me on my way. This is SUPERIOR, top-of-the-line customer service. The fact that this shop values and respects its customers so much that it stands by any work it does--including just a nose piercing--for months and YEARS after the work, is truly exemplary to me. My piercing fits better now--it's not so loose and doesn't come out the second I dry my face with a towel--and it's hidden farther in my nose so it's not so large and looming like a booger (lol). When I left, Erica said I can always come back if I have issues with the piercing, questions or just want an adjustment--and she said they have a few piercers, but to "ask for me from now on, I'll deal with you" with an "I got you girl" smile. Not many people have seen this gem of a tattoo parlour, a hidden basement shop in Adams Morgan [it's right below the Botanica with a large Virgin Mary in the display window]. It's a great place to get tattooed. The entire staff is awesome and friendly. [Turns out one of the artists is friends with one of the stylists that work for the same company as I do! Small world!] The place is kept very clean, neat, and organized. They house great tattoo artists such as Chad Koeplinger and Grant Cobb [who used to work at Jinx Proof in Georgetown]; and they feature guest artists from around the world here and there. I've been twice to have Grant tattoo my lower lip and my left side and definitely wasn't disappointed. I've been tattooed five times before, yet Grant kept up conversation to keep my mind off the pain, giving tips on breathing here and there, as well. He's an all around great artist. Have a specific style you're looking for? Grant will be able to draw it up. Some of his work can be seen on the Good Charlotte twins. George, the piercer, is is always willing to help. The second time I went to the shop, I brought two friends along - they just wanted to watch me get inked. George noticed that one of my friends [who has his lip pierced] had lost a ball on his circular barbell and helped him picked out a new one. Needless to say, we both left happy with our new pieces. This was a last minute decision to get tattoos so I looked online to see which shops did walk-ins & Tattoo Paradise had popped up. Me & my sister wanted to get matching tattoos & we had a great experience. We got to the shop around 7 to talk about what we wanted to get & showed pictures of our idea. The manager (whose name I unfortunately forgot..) greeted us & he was so friendly. He told us that it would take them a little while to sketch up what we wanted to get. Overall the wait was about an hour since it was starting to get a little busy but we were completely fine waiting. We filled out the paperwork & were quoted prices. Mine was $150 & my sister's was $180 since her tattoo was going to have a little more detail added onto it. Our tattoo artist was Billy & he was by far one of the best artists I've gotten tattooed by. He was very nice & made the experience wonderful. Our tattoos took about 45 minutes to finish & came out looking amazing. This is probably my favorite tattoo I've gotten so far. The detail is on point & he replicated exacted what I wanted. I had an awesome experience at Tattoo Paradise yesterday. I had been referred to the shop by one of my colleagues while overseas, who had amazing sleeves done there. I had a tattoo that was done in NJ a month ago and the artist did not go deep enough into my skin. As a result, the tattoo had significantly faded. I explained what I wanted, and sure enough I got exactly that, but only better! David Cavalcante was my artist and he did outstanding work! I must admit, I was a bit nervous when I first walked in after reading some negative reviews, but my mind was made up, I was going to get my tattoo done there after seeing the work that they do. Well, the gentleman at the front desk was very friendly, as was David the tattoo artist. Actually, come to think about it, everyone that I encountered were very pleasant. I have no clue how people could misconstrue their customer service, I was very happy from the moment I walked in to the moment I walked out. I had an awesome experience! My boyfriend and I went to Tattoo Paradise to get small, simple tattoos. We both got our tattoos done by Nikki and after my boyfriend kept the wrap on his tattoo for about 6 hours. Once he took it off his tattoo had appeared to have bled completely outside the lines. We were totally bummed when we researched this and found that it was likely due to a poor angle of the needle or pushing the needle in too deep. This was my first tattoo and I am terrified that mine will result in a similar way. My tattoo has not shown any signs of bleeding yet, so I'm staying hopeful. read more

Yesterday, I wandered into Tattoo Paradise for a daith piercing. I'd wanted to get one done for a while and read some good reviews of this place on Yelp. Erika did my piercing. She was friendly, explained the entire process and gave me thorough aftercare instructions and her card. She made the entire process as comfortable and pain-free as possible. She also assured me I could come back if I needed help changing the jewelry or during the healing process. This place has a friendly staff, high quality work, and affordable prices. It's exceedingly difficult to find a place in the DC area with all three. I'll definitely return for all my future piercings. read more

I was a walk-in and I was greeted by 2 friendly dudes who let me know how much my tattoo would cost and how long it would take. Guilherme did my face tattoo, I was nervous at first but it was painless and quick. I felt comfortable the whole time and I spent no longer than an hour in the shop which is great. The pricing may be off putting for some people but between the professionalism, cleanliness of the shop and great artwork, it's so worth it. I'll definitely be coming back! read more

the people who work here are so rude. I could not even understand why I wasn't able to make a simple phone call while I was in there. My friends and I are on vacation and we wanted to get a tattoo together to represent this trip. Their minimum being $100 for a small simple tattoo is ridiculous. I was quoted $180 for EACH last night from a guy who worked there for a small little paper plane. I come back the next day to see if I was given a different price. I was quoted $130-140. What a SCAM. Literally should've read reviews before coming. You guys were literally going to make money from us regardless, to be charging us this much is ridiculous. I have several tattoos from here. I can't remember the different artists' names, and it has been a while since I've been there. That being said, this tattoo shop is where I started getting hot and heavy with getting inked and I miss it very much. I moved to New York two years ago and I haven't found a place quite like this yet. Every artist I had at Tattoo Paradise was amazing. The artistry, lines, and coloring is top notch. One tattoo I got in particular by Dave is a conversation starter and people gawk at it whenever they see it. It's a really colorful sun and moon on my right shoulder. I went to Dave with a specific idea and he molded it into something really beautiful. Every time I wear something sleeveless, that tattoo is the first thing people comment on. Everyone asks where it's from, and I'm happy to say it's from "Dave at Tattoo Paradise in D.C." I can't recommend this place enough! Truly, truly great. read more
