Went tonight for the 1st time after my wife heard some co-workers talking about it. Small place, out of the way near food Lion between flowers plantation and 70. Close to bridge that's over the Neuse River. Had mussels in red sauce as an appetizer, was excellent. I had sausage peppers and onions on Italian bread for my dinner and my wife had the Salmon wrap. We both enjoyed our dinners so much we are looking forward to our next visit. We had a chance to meet the owner and his son both were really personable. The mussels in red sauce and also the white wine sauce are excellent. Homemade bread hot out of the oven is amazing. Crab cakes and steak sandwich were good and the meatball trio was so yummy. I ordered here for the first time about a month ago and have been back a few times since. I told the host it was my first time ordering and he was so friendly and kind. He gave me recommendations and he told staff it was my first time there. I have done curbside pickups a few times and they are excellent. I have tried the pizza, burger, loaded fries, and wings. All were very good. The service was extremely friendly. They are so nice, it makes me go back more often just to have nice human interaction. I really appreciate this place, the good food, and the people who work here. They seem to be following covid protocol really well too. read more

Pretty Darn Good Food! My wife and I stopped in her last week for dinner wanting to try a place we had never been. If not for Yelp and maps we would not have found this gem. We both order burgers that were decent. I got the fries which were average but my wife got the chips which were the STAR of the meal! They were crispy and perfectly salty. We love made to order chips and these were outstanding! We are not drinkers but I could tel this is a really good bar with a large selection. Once thing I noticed was how food came to the window and was IMMEDIATELY brought out to tables by whoever was closest. It was obvious that the management has done a fine job getting the staff to care about the diners. Way to go! The only con was the music. We were there right at 5pm and it sounded like a $25 boom box from 1988! It was too loud and sounded crappy. At first I thought it was a jukebox but when I started hearing radio commercials I realized it was just that. It would be nice if they took it down a notch or two and improved the quality of the sound. Overall, we liked it enough that we will come back and try the Italian! read more

Loved being able to call in and order a pizza! The time allowed to call in has changed and we haven't been back since which is a bummer. I tried to go in once but had to make other plans. I'm giving this place 5 stars for 2 reasons. 1) The pizza is very good, impressive for a town like Clayton. 2) They have a breaded tenderloin sandwich. Not quite as good as the ones where I grew up in Ottawa, IL, but close enough for me to really enjoy them. Extremely large in size, thin with a flavorful beaded crust. They always seem to be busy with mostly locals eating & sitting at the bar. When I get tired of the tenderloin sandwiches I'll try something else on their large menu. read more

An employee with a grey tavern 42 shirt was 6 foot away talking to two gentlemen at a table. I later find out she is the owner. She said nothing. I asked the guy at the table in front of me if I was invisible. If the owner behaves like this, I see why the staff could care less. read more

The place to be if you live on or off Tavern 42. The food is delicious and the environment is very welcoming. The food served here is worth the wait. Highly recommend the Mussels in their white sauce and their Pizza is definitely "New York" style! The atmosphere of this place is amazing! Everyone is so friendly and they are more than willing to squeeze our large party of 5 into the tiny little restaurant. The outside can fit whatever size party you have, but the inside isn't as large-party friendly. There's one big table in the center but we can never manage to get it. The food is pretty good, I'm no fan of burgers so I get the spaghetti and meatballs (the meatballs are to DIE FORRRR!). every time we come, we order the house made chips. If we eat them all we order a couple boxes to go, that's how good they are. It's no visit to Tavern 42 without those chips. We were the only table seated and no refills given at all until another waitress came in. Our chicken wings were very under cooked. As an establishment, a waiter and waitress when you walk by and you see nothing has been eaten take pride and ask! That is a sign it was not good. I'll gladly pay for what I ordered so your not out any money but it should be the other way around if you offer excellent service. For $58 I could have had lunch at the Cheesecake Factory! I've been coming here since these guys opened up and they have just gotten better! They have a nice area inside to sit and an outdoor patio. They are a quite busy on Friday and Saturday nights but it is worth waiting for. Their food is outstanding! From the homemade potato chips to the perfectly made hamburgers they have flavor right on point. To sum it up the staff are very helpful when you are ordering and have the food out in about 30 minutes or less on a busy night! read more

Three couples came in after us, they all revived menus and drinks before anyone acknowledged us. We finally got our menus and drinks. No one ever came back to take our order. After watching several more people come in and get service we left. We came here based on the reviews and I'm not sure where all the great reviews come from? Walked in on a Saturday around 12:30 and there was one other couple in the whole place and the entire restaurant was smokey from the kitchen. The place could use a good deep clean, the booths were tacky to the touch. The attention seems to go to hand written signage... I believe we counted four or five 'specials' signs not to mention the picture paper drink special list that was provided to us after we signed our check at the end of our meal. The food tasted like frozen hamburger patties and overcooked french fries. Their ranch dressing was not homemade. I'm giving this place two stars because the service was good considering there was one bartender taking care of the whole place.
