We have ventured here before. Was recommended by co-workers. It was a decent visit the first time. We came back again after seeing their online menu with MUSSELS!! We came, we saw, we ate, we came again the next day! The service was very friendly and all staff were very attentive. Even when they were low staff both back and front of house. They were top notch! The time to wait for food was long, but so worth it. Alway fresh and delicious! Even when my Husband asked for something not on the menu, they were able to deliver. The Mussels and crab cakes are worth the wait. Their Citrus Cooler (adult beverage) very refreshing and goes well with the sea food selection. Caprese Salad was perfect! This is easily my favorite place to eat in Clayton. Their wings are ridiculously good, not to mention HUGE! The beer selection offers something for everyone, and features a lot of local brews. There are several ciders and gluten-free beer options, as well, which is something you don't see everywhere. I love a great local restaurant and Tavern 42 is just that . In the past month since being introduced to this place I must have eaten lunch here around 6 times ! Everything on the menu is amazing . Fresh hot pizza by the slice perfect crust , amazing chicken salad , the most delicious fried shrimp , crisp hand cut chips ,angus burgers, mustard BBQ wings ah yasssss oh and seriously decadent desserts. When in Clayton NC Tavern 42 is a must. We have ordered pizza from here dozens of times since they opened. It was always consistent. I don't know what happened in the past year but the pizza just isn't the same. I'm assuming they have cheapened the ingredients (cheese, sauce) to save money during COVID since revenue has most likely dropped. We didn't give up the first time the pizza wasn't good- we've tried it another 3 times and it was blah each time. So disappointed. Thought we finally had a decent (and yes I mean decent not great) pizza place in Clayton but we are done with this place. read more

We've been in 3 different times recently that 1 person was in a 4 person booth alone. The pizza is ok. The meatball app was not good. It just tasted bad. We didn't finish them at all. I've been a customer of T-42 nearly since the day it opened. Don't know whether to call a fantastic restaurant with a great beer selection or tavern serves great Pizza and sandwiches but either way it works. Yes it is a small and they try to maximize the space they have and most of time it is not an issue, but the place get busy at times and that probably because they have developed a loyal clientele. I really loved the pizza pub that was in this location previously. I was excited to see that there was a new tavern opened and hoped they had service and food as good as the previous restaurant. Not only was it as good, it was better! I stopped in on St Pattys Day during he NCAA games. The place was packed but the bartenders still managed to get me a drink and I was able to grab a bar seat shortly after. I ordered nachos, a sandwich and the Shepard's Pie that was on special. Everything was AMAZING! The bar is also a full bar, not just draft beer. The bartenders were all attentive and could hold a conversation. I was and am excited to have a local place to watch games and have a drink with the option of great food! We will def be back! read more

I applaud you, Tavern 42, for your unprofessional first impression. My family and I happened to be in your area (we live 40 minutes away) and were in search of a restaurant for dinner. We originally did not have plans to be in Clayton for dinner. I specifically called and asked about your COVID requirements and you assured me you had an extra mask for my spouse. Upon entry, before I even had time to ask for a disposable mask (and yes, I was wearing mine), you loudly demanded that my husband "must have a mask!" 1. I refuse to be embarrassed and berated in front of others when you stated that you would provide an extra mask. 2. Instead of demanding a mask, why not suggest we sit outside? 3. Take lessons from Lowe's and Walmart: offer disposable masks to customers outside the door who may have just walked out the door forgetting to tuck their masks in their back pockets. Trust me, I work in a customer service industry. It's not hard to think outside the box to accommodate customers when you want their business. 4. I hope you realize there are exceptions to this State wide mask mandate. Educate yourself on these exceptions before you judge and demand masks. 5. You have a paycheck because of customers. I'm glad we walked out and didn't reward the poor service that was displayed within 30 seconds of entry. 6. What are your rules for the cooking staff in the back texting on their phones? They sure as heck weren't wearing masks, as we easily saw through the side kitchen door. 7. You have "COVID updates" listed on this website and I highly recommend that you add "no mask, no entry" in bold letters. At least let people know your expectations up front. As for the food, we will never know (or now, care to know) how it tastes. read more

The food is the only good thing about this place. We go sometimes before working nightshift, I have never been really impressed with the service. We went this afternoon and the service was a new level of horrible....I guess since we were not drinking alcohol we didn't matter. After we ordered our pizza and the food was delivered nobody came back to us. The table next to us never ran out of their alcohol of choice however I got 1 glass of tea and it was NEVER refilled. If I could rate it a zero I would. We waited for over an hour to be seated, which was okay, we are pretty understanding. Our waitress Casey finally takes our order and we wait... and wait... and wait... luckily the DJ was awesome and we passed the time playing musical bingo. Then our waitress comes over and tells us that she forgot to put our order in! Again, we were very understanding as we have both worked in the food service industry before. Then, our waitress comes back over and apologizes but the kitchen will not cook a specialty burger after a certain time. Am I in the twilight zone? She forgot to put the order in and now they will not make the burgers we originally ordered?!?! We have to settle for a T42 burger. Are you kidding me? What am I missing? Again, we are non confrontational people and just go with the flow, but we will most certainly NEVER be patronizing this establishment ever again! The worst part is our waitress totally dipped out on us and they weren't even apologetic about what had happened and we received a full bill! No comp for a drink or anything! We literally went in at 7:30 pm and didn't leave until 10:45 pm! Oh and I forgot to mention the flies were horrendous and I've had better burgers at most fast food restaurants! This small restaurant was very busy with only one sever on a Sunday night. She was friendly and efficient. Maybe we ordered the wrong things because none of our food was great. We ordered fettuccine Alfredo (tasted like canned sauce), burger (big but doesn't come with any sides for the price), and a specialty pizza that was $15 for a small pizza (couldn't eat it bc it tasted funny).$50 meal for the amount of food and quality we got wasn't worth it. read more

First of all, I want to say this is not a review of their food or service. THIS is a review of the managers or owners of the restaurant. The other month they had a "spring fling" or we're celebrating something. Possibly a 1 year anniversary or something. Had a huge crowd all day long and into the night. Had a band playing outdoors all day and late into the evening. And this is where my issue is. The music was LOUD! VERY LOUD! I don't want to sound like an old greaser but I know I will. I live behind this place a few miles back. I heard the music ALL DAY........ and you guessed, late into the evening. Not just hearing noise and recognizing it music but I was able to sing along because I could hear it that clearly. I'm all for a good time and celebrating accomplishments and congratulations to them for whatever it was they were celebrating. Ok, so much for enjoying dinner on the deck because we couldn't hear each other talking. That's loud. Strike 1! Secondly, we moved inside and we could still hear the music. Around 8:30 I called to ask them to turn it down a bit because it was loud enough that my child couldn't sleep. Yes he's old enough to communicate that the music was too loud. Strike 2! Get this, the music was so loud there that the person who answered the phone couldn't hear me!!!! Seriously she couldn't hear me. Calling that Strike 3! Hanging up at that point and getting talked down by my wife I left it alone thinking it would quite down by 9 or so. Oh no! They kept right on rocking. And yes I could sing along when I went outside. Strike 4! 9:15ish I call yet again with the exact same result. The gentleman that answered couldn't hear a word I said. This time I was speaking loudly. Strike 27! Or wherever we're at. No I didn't call the police, thanks to my wife yet again. Very inconsiderate of the people in the area that probably most frequently support their restaurant. I had been wanting to go try the place prior to this but unfortunately they will not be getting my support. Just my 2 cents. read more
