If I'm near a Smithfield's I'm gonna grab something - BBQ, chicken, even a chicken tender sandwich, anything but the hot dog which is honestly awful. The pork BBQ is solid but it is not great. The pork for all the Smithfield locations are cooked overnight on site. The meat is not cooked over wood, but rather in large ovens, so there is no smokiness to it. The fried chicken is very good, and they offer a chicken tender sandwich that is very good, and rather large. The Brunswick Stew is good, as are the FF and slaw. read more

Smithfield's had always been in my top three places to grab a quick lunch or dinner . You can't go wrong with the bbq sandwich (add rib sauce) the potato salad is my all time favorite. I love the tea it's always fresh and perfect the fried chicken is always hot and fresh. And if you're really hungry get the combo plate. You will not be disappointed. My favorite location is in Dunn, but honestly, I stop in for a quick pint of potato salad if I'm driving by one . Nothing beats a gathering when someone brings a big tailgate pack or something from Smithfield's . I wish we had these in WA State. 2nd time here and we picked up dinner to take out. The 1st time was a charm but, this time was 180 out. The chicken was all dried out to the point we threw it out and it wasn't worth the 20 minute drive back. So if we return there's a 50/50 chance the chicken will be fresh. Waited in the drive through for 10 minutes to get a sandwich thrown together that there was hardly any meat on it and falling apart and soggy. Suther was handed to me with no syrup in the mix. Newly renovated, I decided to give this spot another chance since they're right up the street. Again I'm disappointed. Perhaps more disappointed. I don't know how they have the nerve to call their product Barbecue. It's a slap in the face to any pitmaster that spends hours smoking a chunk of pork. This meat doesn't even taste like it's been smoked. And for crying out loud put some barbecue sauce on it! I had to put my own sauce on it in order to choke it down. Never again! read more

We drive approximately 15 miles to frequent Smithfield Chicken 'N Bar B Q Clayton, NC 1-2 times per week as the restaurant is clean, comfortable, food is hot, and customer service is good. On Saturday 6-17-2023 at approximately 6pm this restaurant fell miserably on all four of the above criteria. The restaurant tables were dirty. I got a wet paper towel and cleaned our table. We were warned by another couple how cold the restaurant AC was and I ask if they could please raise the temperature and they complied. After waiting approximately 5 minutes for our food I saw them place my order beside another order under the heat lamp. After several minutes I walked to the front counter to get someone's attention as was the other customer whose food was also waiting under heat lamp. A female walked towards us, took a phone call, moved to a room to our right and closed the door as to not be heard. We waited another 1-2 minutes and she returned, placed my order on the same tray as the other meal and delivered our meals. The Barbecue was lukewarm and the fries were cold. Additionally the AC came back on and we were again cold while eating our meal. I hope that this was an exception to the normal good experiences we have had in the pass. read more

This is an okay place to go in Clayton when you need a quick fix of fried chicken and barbecue. They also have really good Brunswick stew as well as fries, slaw, hush puppies and other sides. As for their Eastern NC - styled barbecue, it's far from the best available in Eastern NC but it's usually decent enough, and their barbecue sandwich is really good. What I like is their drive-thru usually moves along pretty good and their prices are reasonable, especially considering you could easily spend the same amount at a fast food joint and not get the same value or quality of food. The reason I give them a 3-star rating is due to the taste of the BBQ pork as mentioned previously and, secondly, the combination pork & fried chicken plate will get you barbecue pork and two pieces of chicken but they skimp on the portion of BBQ they put on the plate. I wish they would either give you a larger portion of BBQ or maybe have the option to only get one piece of chicken and get double BBQ pork - that would be a nice option. Since McCall's BBQ, that was across the street before it closed down a few years ago, is not an option in this area anymore, Smithfield's is the best place for chicken & BBQ in Clayton along Hwy. 70. read more
