This place kept showing up on my IG feed, so decided to trek to jersey and give it a try. The patio is what attracted me, since i rarely dine in with my infant. Once we got there, there were several outdoors seats, but we were told they were for reservations. (This was after the hostess literally just looked at us like we were foreign objects- until I said "table for 2") i actually wanted to leave after this- she was not welcoming at all- but we literally drove 40m to try this place. We were then seated inside ( it wasnt busy, so i didn't have that much of an issue with it) Our waiter, Daniel was great- definitely 5 stars in that regard. The food and drinks were pretty good as well. We had calamari for appetizers, shrimp dish and chicken Milanese for entrees. When we left and walked by the outdoor patio again, there were still several available seats, specifically one that was open since our arrival- so that was disappointing because I definitely think there was some availability for outdoor seating, the hostess just didn't care to really try to accommodate us. read more

Came here for lunch on Saturday and was a complete miss. It has some pretty good reviews on Yelp, but I just don't buy it, as almost everyone in our group was dissatisfied (and there were 10 of us). The place, in all honesty, is super nice - the ambiance and decor are great...you walk in expecting to have a great dining experience. The back turf yard area, although closed when we were there, is really nice with lights strung up and a little romantic vibe. The inside is pretty big, with a nice-size bar, and a fairly large dining room with various types of tables and seating arrangements. The service here was eh, okay at best...I understand we were a large group, but there was literally nobody else in the restaurant for the first 15-20min of our time there, and even when people did start coming in to dine, it wasn't as if it was packed. I got the sense our waitress didn't like us, as she rarely came back to check up on us or ask us for food/drink updates - we had to flag her down. Even when we asked her for something, she never smiled or anything, just kind of nodded her head and left. My meal and drinks were horrendous. The only thing I actually liked was the water, no joke. To start, I asked for orange juice because wanted to prep my palate for a day of drinking we were all about to embark on. The OJ was disgusting, as it definitely came through one of those soda streams behind the bar, and had an unusual bitter aftertaste. It wasn't even orange soda-like, as there was no carbonation, just tasted awful. I had three sips and put it in the middle of the table. After that, I decided to order a bloody mary. Another huge mistake, as well. Should've stuck to beers or something that the restaurant isn't physically responsible for making or preparing. This bloody mary was completely gross, as there was not the right combination of the tomato bloody mary mix and vodka - there was no spice flavor that bloody mary's are supposed to have, and it was flat-tasting. It made my stomach even more upset. Again, I put the bloody mary with the OJ in the middle of the table, both with a few sips taken out of them. Not once did our waitress come and ask if there was something wrong with the drinks or that I didn't like them. Onto the food - aside from salads, they have a few veggie sandwich options, and I opted for the grilled cheese, sans bacon. When the grilled cheese came, it was soggy and the cheese wasn't completely melted, it was that gooey texture that doesn't sit well. The fries had no flavor to them and were semi-soggy too...not crispy/crunchy. I added black pepper to it, but it still didn't taste right. Overall, this was a terrible dining experience, from the food and some of the service, as well. My friends didn't enjoy their sandwiches either - too much blue cheese in the chicken wrap. read more

Hello, I went to tavern 5 recently with my family. It was by far the worst experience I have ever had. First, my waitress was extremely rude and kept on leaving to answer her phone. I think her name starts with a d, but I'm not sure. Not sure if I will return to this establishment especially if she's my waitress, she needs to be respectful of customers and not rush them so she can go on her phone. Also, this restaurant did not follow the 6 feet apart rule at all, tables were too close together. I will tell my friends to not go there until they are up to code with proper guidelines. My updated review is tippin' on the 5 star level, but it's not quite there yet, but I know it'll be there soon!! My wife and I came here for Happy Hour on a Friday night and for HH, the bar was pretty full at 4:45. Happy hour is from 3-6.. Can I make a suggestion... Until 7pm would be better tho!!. We started with a couple drinks.. I a Manhattan and she a Sangria. Both were on the HH menu and for $8 and $6 bucks, respectfully, they were very yummy. Another suggestion? Why is your Jack and Coke $8? Seems a bit high when your one liquor HH drinks are $6. After a while, we ordered a few app's from their HH menu: Spring Rolls, Buffalo Wings, and Calamari - all for $7 per. The Wings and Calamari were very good, and chock full of flavor and you get a nice portion for $7.. The Spring Rolls.. Well, for $7, you don't get much :-( Only 5 small rolls - albeit good, but not a nice serving. That's my only negative about the night's experience. What you get here is an "upscale" HH experience rather than your stereotypical dive bar experience. Very Highly Recommended! read more

good morning fellow yelpers....my sister and I came here late afternoon for early dinner and had a great experience........we both had house salads with their orange flavored dressing....very good.......had fresh hot bread with their garlic butter.....also very good.....my sister had the pasta with vodka sauce and I had sea scallops with asparagus and rice mix......both very good........we had great service, couldn't be better..(.we had a male server with a beard and I'm sorry that I forgot his name0......the drinks ( whisky sour and cc and ginger) were made well........the restaurant and bar is spotless and beautiful.....including the toilets......great outside area in which we sat along with a lower area with lg. picnic tables and a few corn hole games read more

This place was highly touted by friends. It has an appealing feel and decor. I love the backyard environment with corn hole and picnic tables. The wait staff were very pleasant. We started with a hummus appetizer. It was okay. The eggplant lacked flavor. I had the short ribs as my entree. It was very good...not fatty. It had a nice accompaniment of mash potatoes and vegetables. They were all prepared well with complimentary flavors. All in all, probably about a 3.5. read more

Staff was very friendly, It gets crowded very quickly, I would take the outside dining when available low ceilings make it very noisy. Food very good change up the menu every couple of weeks always something different. Parking could be a little rough especially during peak hours, But was able to find a spot off street parking is available. Really disappointed with this spot. The meals were very uneventful. I had the orecchiette which was very dull on flavor, very bland. My wife ordered the veggie tacos without the aioli sauce and asked for salsa on the side. Out came the tacos with the Aioli. They were sent back and came back out without the salsa. It was also very obvious that the chief had no formal training, the vegetables were cut totally wrong for tacos. Taco chips with tacos is not a side, it's like white rice served with fried rice. I want to just conclude with this. I called ahead to ask for a booth ( which by the way there were plenty open when we got there ) because my mom is handicap. I was told they wouldn't accommodate the request, then was told the manager would call me back ..... no one ever did. That's shameful. read more

I've been here a few times, and usually enjoy it. Food was good, but this visit our service was horrible. After dinner our waitress didn't even ask if we wanted dessert, she just brought us our check. And then, she took it upon herself to round up our bill so she didn't have to give us change (coins). We have been to Tavern Five regularly since my review and have enjoyed every meal. Delicious daily specials and the best hamburgers in the area! Incredibly helpful and friendly service. Our waitress, Nicole, and the owner, Debbie, were very friendly and welcoming for our first visit to this restaurant. Maple wings were excellent and we decided to sit outside in the backyard as it was too noisy inside. We had great drinks and enjoyed our salad and burger while dining under the lights. Nice but noisey atmosphere. Excellent and friendly sevice. The food was marginal. Very, very bland burger and frozen food service onion rings which were tasteless and soggy. My friend had the New England clam chowder which he described as "anemic"; I had a sample. It was watery and oddly flavored. The scallops and pasta serving was undersized and uninspiring. Four smaller sized scallops for a dinner entree? The scallops tasted ok, but the pasta was not cooked properly; it was mushy. I don't think the kitchen staff have a clue. We return to tavern 5 every few months or so. Tonight we had the best experience - amazing service by Chris. He was one step ahead of everything we might need. Our orders came out quickly and our drinks were refilled promptly. Incredibly helpful and friendly service. We had the empanadas and wings. Delicious. Minor misunderstanding when we got seated but Gary came to the rescue... Once we got settle on the outside patio things got resolved. Great server, Brianna, took good care of us. Wanted to check out the old Gillys. Beautifully done interior but very noisy if you're sitting in the bar area or in the front of the restaurant. They do have a few tables outside as well as picnic tables and corn hole. Could be fun! Food was good enough but the portions are a little on the smaller side for the price...the fried calamari, although tasty, was definitely not enough to share. The burger was almost child size with lots of fries to fill the plate. Fish tacos were really good flavorwise except they came out cold and had some kind of very bitter leafy green mixed in. Served on the side was a chick pea & rice salad which was delicious...I just wish there was more than 2 forkfuls. All the staff we encountered was really friendly and acommodating. read more

Very nice ambiance. Very clean. Wait staff are friendly but not experienced . Regrettably we were the first people for dinner coming in just before 5 PM. No meals can go in before that time.... Period. We were told twice. So first plates out any night are always interesting. My medium well burger was char outside and rare inside. My wife's fish taco plate was overly spiced. My husband and I were running a few errands and wanted to grab a quick bite to eat. We figured we would try Tavern 5 as we have driven past it a few times and figured it was something new and different for us. We walked in and were immediately greeted and sat at a table. We loved the decor and the atmosphere very modern, warm and welcoming. The server came over told us about the lunch specials and took our order. We started with an order of fried calamari which were cooked perfectly nice and crispy! I had a bacon cheeseburger with mozzarella cheese with a side of fries, both were very good. I was reminded to write this from reviewing my credit card statement. My wife and I really enjoyed eating here 2 weeks, but the ending left a sour taste for us. It was a very nice evening, perfect for enjoying their expansive backyard (which notably is very kid friendly). They have interesting menu choices and each of our dishes were very well done. As it was a warm evening, I had 3 non-alcoholic iced teas, Was the waiter correct when he said management insists that refills need to be charged, or was it his own personal effort to pad the bill with an additional $5.50? Either way, who charges for iced tea refills??!! This scarred somewhat from what was otherwise a very enjoyable meal and will give us pause before returning. read more

Almost didn't get seated when we arrived with a party of 8. Was told no reservations, but when got there was asked if we called ahead. At least 1/3 of restaurant was empty. Owner accommodated us after my insistence that taking reservations and calling ahead were not that different. Was hopeful based on atmosphere and nice outdoor space. When half of my party went out to play cornhole, the owner came over and immediately said, "If I knew half your party wasn't here yet, I wouldn't have seated you." When we explained they were outside playing, she did not apologize and went on to explain to my friend why they have a call ahead and no reservation policy. Food was terrible, friend's fish taco had no flavor, husband's salad with salmon literally had a bunch of greens in it, daughter's steak was chewy and DEF NOT skirt steak, likely flank, for $25. For my first time here. We were met with some negativity. My husband called to ask for a reservation for a Birthday celebration. They said they didn't take reservations normally but because we were a party of 9, they would take our name. BUT when we got here they claimed they knew nothing. We had to wait 25 minutes for the table. The volume of the clients is extremely loud. Some sound absorbing tiles would be good. The food was good and our waitress Katie was very nice. What a gem!! I was in the area for business and looking for a place to grab a drink with some decent food, so I googled places to eat near me and so happy I found and chose this place. The food drinks and ambiance were so good that it turned into date night for me and my husband. Sheri, our server, had such a great personality and was very familiar with the menus, made amazing recommendations! My husband had the pork chop and I had the short rib...all amazing. The drink were mixed well and they had many selections of cocktails wines and beers. There is live music and the entire staff was just so pleasant. I just cannot fathom that a business that runs on customer service does not care about first impressions. I want to say they should get something for the effort to take over and redesign the previous restaurant, which by the way my family and I had enjoyed. It's just that it was so disappointing for our first experience that it took us several years to try it again. Well we tried and failed. Allow me to explain. We live 1.3 miles from here and we love to eat out and we do often so we were really looking forward to having this restaurant in our neighborhood but the reception we received in 2017 was downright chilly, the place was empty and the man with glasses who eventually sat us for lunch inside on a cold day acted like he was trying to get us to leave. And I got the impression that he was in charge. So after taking in the atmosphere of uninspiring homogeneous colors, the manmade materials used in the design of the tables and the boring lunch menu we did just that. The website states that their intention was to offer hospitality but perhaps that only goes towards people they know. Sadly to say our next attempt to try this place was also a failure, we had to leave due to poor service. We have never eaten here. read more

This is my 3rd visit to Tavern 5. Service was very good. Server was attentive without being over bearing. Atmosphere was good can be slightly noisy but do able. Too bad the service is atrocious bc the food is decent, but not great. We finally were able to get out for a date night, decided dinner/drinks outside at Tavern 5 would be perfect. Unfortunately, there was a wait for outside, no big deal, so we were seated in the bar area with a view of the band setting up and dying for a drink while we decided on some entrees/appys. That's where the service issues started. We were greeted after sitting for 15 + minutes and had to inform the hostess no one has come to our table, who in turn told the manager that instructed a waitress to come to our table. Once the server came over, her initial interaction was "are you ready to order everything now?" Wow, okay....we were, so gladly gave our drinks and food order. Drinks were delivered 10 minutes later and the food game out relatively soon after 20 min or so after ordering, not too bad. The server followed the runner delivering food and my husband luckily ordered a second drink since that was the last time we saw our waitress at our table for the remaining 45 minutes we were there. Soon after the food arrived, I finished my cocktail and left it on the side of the table to show I needed another. The sever was by the kios chatting with other waitresses, checking her phone, and didn't even look in our direction once. At this point, I needed a drink of anything liquid to wash down my spicy steak tacos, so I finished my husbands. Now we both needed drinks, as a server you want to up sell, come on ?!?! I tried to catch the managers eye as she was the one who instructed to waitress to greet us in the first place after waiting too long, but she was sitting in a booth chatting it up with her friends, I assume. It was quite awful as we finally caught an employees attention and she asked if we needed anything. My response was "I wanted a drink 30+ min ago and our server hasn't been to our table in about 45 min or so...." she was sweet and apologetic (the only one received that night), but the damage was done. AWFUL SERVICE and having a bad wedding band play at 8:15 pm in the dining room isn't a great look.
