Horrible! The whole experience was nothing short of terrible! Waitress didn't even have a clue as to what salad dressings were available...the only one she knew was blue cheese, which I ordered but that isn't what I received! I ordered a cheese burger that was listed with pepper jack cheese only to be told the only cheese they had was cheddar! We waited 30 minutes for bread to be brought to the table and it was cold! An hour after sitting, I asked the waitress where our dinner salads were. She said she put them in with the dinner order and could not understand why we would have wanted then first. She brought the salads...not only with the wrong dressing but with a dressing that had no flavor and was basically oil! Two minutes later, she brought our dinners. Which were cold! We ordered a chocolate chip cookie dessert with ice cream...the cookie was horrible ... beyond dry! The one bus boy they had hit my back no less than 5 times as he was walking by with this tray. Lastly, the noise level way tooooo high. You certainly cannot go with a party of four and expect to have a conversation. read more

Its Ok, I agree with Mike M. We left hungry, and went home and ate again, even though we had everything ,including dessert. The scallops were succulent, but very few, with a bit if risotto to make it look like more. Scanty desserts , barely there.The burger was really good but too small( like a child's meal ) with lots of fries to fill the plate. But this seems to be the trend in some restaurants. Prices were diner type like the well established QUEEN. They have tvs around the bar? Why,you can't hear yourself think? They should use closed caption like most bars. The decor is great, but our ears were ringing all night when we left and you had to yell to carry on a conversation or to place an order.......soft goods in restaurants will soften the acoustics so you can actually carry on a conversation. I know as I have done a few in my time in NY. The staff is fantastic, pleasant,& well trained. I am not sure how the neighborhood deals with all the cars parked everywhere either.Since it blocks your view on both sides if you are pulling out of a driveway or street. The place is only open a few days a,week for dinner, no reservations, and a definite wait by popularity and new-ness. Well, the town lost 2 much needed eateries but then gained them back. I really want to like this place and I do BUT, I prefer the other new place re -opened just down the street, with bigger portions ,more food options,same price structure, byob .I will definitely go there because I really like being able to have to many choices instead of maybe the same one or two items still leaving me hungry , and The Queen, and still try The Tavern again because after a time they will improve I am sure due to the competition. For my drink tastes though I prefer the drink menu at the grill by the airport, which I believe is their main competition. read more

Not sure what happened here. We really enjoyed our first experience here, but not so much this time around. Took forever to get our food. Appetizers came out cold. Took at least 45 minutes to get our food after ordering. Other tables seated after us got their food before us even though we were here much longer. Portions also seem much smaller. We have been wanting to try this new place and last night was our first chance to do so. We were nervous about the no reservations policy but were seated within 5 minutes of arrival on a busy Friday evening. The noise level is pretty high, but that was our expectation, so no big deal. Our drinks came quickly. We ordered the mussels and the meatballs as appetizers. They took quite a long time to come out, but the mussels were delicious - love the sauce. The meatballs were good, but they were only warm, not hot. Hot would have been better. Two of us got the Tavern burger as an entree - they both said that it was delicious. Two of us got the fish tacos - the flavor was good, but they were barely warm. Our entrees took quite a while to come out, so maybe that's why the tacos weren't hot enough. Our server was very nice and helpful, and apologetic that our food took a while. Overall, the experience was good - we will go back again, after they have been in business a little longer. Hopefully, we can improve the review next time. read more

Was excited to try this with the family. The food was very good. However, my complaints would be that it was very loud, had to yell to the person next to me. I am very excited to review this wonderful new venue in Pompton Plains! Tavern 5 has opened on the property of what used to be Gilly's but with a much needed updating and tasteful renovation. The outside truly feels like a tavern/bistro that you might find in California wine country. The Inside is beautifully laid out and decorated with lots of wood and rustic, but classy touches. We dined there about a week and a half after it opened not knowing what to expect but realizing they might be working through some hiccups. Well, that wasn't the case. The staff is very well-trained, competent and friendly. For a Thursday night the place was quite busy; apparently many people were excited about the long-awaited opening. The menu is interesting and appealing with offerings for most tastes. The prices are reasonable. We were started with some hummus and pita chips, complements of the chef. I ordered the tomato bisque as an appetizer which was outstanding ( and quite generous) and my husband ordered a wonderful salad. Our entrees were seared scallops on risotto and grilled salmon over lentils and vegetables. Both were perfectly prepared and presented, and in a timely manner. The bar area had a good crowd that night. There is outdoor dining in the back of the restaurant as well as a lawn-game area with corn hole. We are very happy to have another fine eating establishment in our wonderful town. We wish the Tavern 5 " family" congratulations and much luck with their endeavor and look forward to our next visit. read more

Decided to Finally try this place today, and arrived shortly after brunch started. We were forewarned at the door that there was a small party being catered and this would cause some delay in our food service. We opted to stay because it wasn't crowded at all in the main seating area. Sadly I regretted we stayed. The food was absolutely delicious when it arrived well over an hour later of placing the order. I made sure to place my sons order of pancakes immediately thinking they would at least expedite his food. As it turns out, his plate was the last to arrive to the table. Totally not ok Unfortunately this place is not set up for hosting a small party eventand continue serving the main seating area. Management should consider closing to the general public when they host parties. I'm not sure if it's a kitchen issue or they simply didn't have enough hands on deck. To be fair, I will go back and give it another try. However, If I see another party event , I will walk away read more

First time here for dinner. For starters we shared a loaded baked potato soup, which was delicious. For our entrees we ordered the seared shrimp dish and the double cut pork chops. Both were very, very good; nice presentation, nicely put together. The shrimp had just the right amount of orzo pasta, well balanced with chic peas, spinach and cherry tomatoes. The cheese fondue sauce (light) held everything nicely together. This sauce was also amazing with some bread for dunking at end of meal :-) Our waiter Chris was very courteous, informative and attentive; helped make our evening enjoyable. read more

Nice restaurant with available outdoor seating and a full bar. Food was good as were the cocktails. The inner dining room near the bar was very loud. My husband and I had dinner here when it first opened and it was great. Definitely pricey but the food and service were great. Today - Father's Day - totally different story. The service was AWFUL!!! Over and hour to get our meal and my drinks came out wrong EVERY TIME. Food was cold and the waiter had an attitude because we were questioning him why our food was taking so long. This is my first time at Tavern 5. I learned about it from an article I read in the Wayne today. I dined here with my family on a Sunday, which is the first time they were open on a Sunday. One should note that the Sunday menu is different than their menu posted on their website. That being said we all really enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. My son had the classic burger and I had the Tavern 5 burger... both were delicious. My wife thoroughly enjoyed the stuffed portobello mushroom burger and my daughter enjoyed the NY strip steak with truffle fries. They also had a nice selection of craft beers on tap... understandingly they were on the pricy side. We all look forward to coming back again!!!! read more

I've been here multiple times (I really want to like this place) and every time I'm disappointed. There are tons of reviews mentioning how excellent the food is, and I'm sincerely confused. I've had a few dishes that were mostly okay, but I've yet to make it through a meal here without at least one person in my family (and usually two or three out of five) receiving dishes that are disappointing, and in some cases, downright bad. It's particularly irritating because the price point suggests a higher quality. It's not an excessively expensive place, I just think it's overpriced considering what you're getting. I'm not a picky eater, nor do I usually complain about food, but this place really was bad. They have a few decent options, but I can't justify going to a restaurant where there's a 50 percent chance my meal is terrible. That being said, the decorations are absolutely gorgeous (their interior designer should win an award), and while it's slightly loud, it's not unbearable. Basically, if you come here, come for the ambiance, and definitely not the food. read more

Defiantly deserves 5 stars. The atmosphere is great. It feels warm and inviting inside. The noise level is pretty high which I find to be perfect when you want to bring large groups or children. My waiter was named Ash who was extremely friendly and helpful. The food was amazing! My boyfriend got a pasta dish and I got a hamburger. I love how the food choices go from simple to more sophisticated giving you a range of options to order from. Overall great experience and will be going back soon. read more

This places is really nice , we went for Father's Day ! The only problem was we had to wait almost 1/30 for the food to be ready ! They kept serving us juice, water etc but at the time the food came it was already cold and late ! I know it was Father's Day , I will try again to see if they were just back up for the day or it just how they work ! Opened for business in June 2016. Attractive decor but apparently no one considered the acoustics. All hard surfaces with no sound deadening materials so conversation was difficult even when restaurant wasn't overflowing. Tavern food plus which was good. Service was not its strong suit--it was slow & not particularly attentive. One dinner was served ten minutes after the three other diners were already eating. Server had no real appreciation for the fact that diners should be served together. read more

The owners of Tavern 5 have done a great job creating the kind of restaurant that you can't wait to tell your friends about. First impressions are lasting and my wife and I were really impressed with the decor, the staff, the menu and the quality. We sat outside on the deck overlooking their picnic table area. They put in a few corn hole games at the far end of the astro turf area and we saw a number of families having dinner while their kids (young ones and a few older ones too) could get up and go play without disturbing anyone. Making a great neighborhood restaurant is hard enough, making one that is 'kid friendly' without turning your place upside down is masterful! Seriously, try this place. Great food, a very well thought out menu, friendly staff and a wine and beer list with some nice finds on it. We'll definitely be going back. read more

We've had the tacos two times, the chicken tacos are very refreshing, the steak tacos are also delicious, fish was ok they could've added more flavor. My real complaint is about the staff. We've had two different servers both women and we went with 4 people the first time and then 6 people the second time. Both times the servers were not friendly they asked if we were ready to order as soon as we sat down and hadn't even opened the menu yet. They are very pushy, I get it's busy and you want to turn your tables and make money but don't ask to take my appetizer away when I'm still eating it. The second time we went she took half of our tables drink order and walked away and she seemed annoyed we didn't know what we wanted to drink yet, we ordered some water while we were looking at the menu. She walked away and didn't even ask me what I wanted to drink, she came back with 2 of the 3 waters that were ordered. The ambience is nice but it's just not really a place where you can relax and enjoy dinner with your friends, im turned off by the pushiness. And does it hurt to crack a smile every once in awhile? Your chest isnt going to make all of your tips for you! read more

the service was TERRIBLE! I kept asking for our water to be filled and it never happened. The pizza was good but not great & I think the prices are a little too high! We had two house wines & it was like $12 a glass. Also being told we can't change the cheese on a burger was a little ridiculous. Ok the design and finishes are very well done. Went here on a Friday night and there seems to be some disorganization with the staff there needs to be a floor manager guiding and teaching the kids how to work.The crab cake was average at best, the pizza was comparable to one that you can find in the frozen food aisle and heat up. However, 12 bucks for a hamburger that was cooked on a flat grill had no taste and was terrible in size. If I'm paying 12 bucks for a gourmet burger I'll go to zinburger not this place it was a 5 dollar burger at best. Lastly the service was ok had to wait a while to be helped at 5:30 in the evening and with a baby in a restaurant your on borrowed time. Young inexperienced waiters and waitresses work here, friendly yes, they rather socialize and check their phones than work.It's only a matter of time before this place flops. Guys get it together value your customers opinions especially ones that work in the food service industry. Hire a restaurant consultant to help with this place. read more
