Greeted right away and told to sit anywhere we like. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. Inside is comfortable and bathrooms were clean. Menu wise, I wish we were there for brunch, wow! Looks delicious. But instead we were here for lunch. Got their World Famous Troppo Sqaush Soup and it was amazing! If you like a squash soup then this is the soup for you. Creamy, thick, and punched with great flavor. Also went with their Troppo salad which was a good portion for lunch and the raspberry vinaigrette brought all the flavors together. My boyfriend and I came for brunch and we will def be back again! He got the biscuits and gravy (he's a gravy fanatic and LOVED it) and I got the eggs benny vegetarian style. So so good. The beer list was average at best, and their cocktail menu is almost all with captain Morgan and the tiniest drink ever. The food comes in VERY small portions for the price of food. I ordered a Paloma that just tasted like tequila, no grapefruit or lime flavor. I've had Palomas before and this was one of the worst I've had. Ok that was a disappointment. What started off as hopeful quickly took a u-turn. There isn't much I can say that was pleasant about the visit but the alcohol. Let's start off with the food. In my world if you are charging the prices they were for the food ( $12 BLT ) the quality should at least be of better quality. I could get as good of food for much lesser price from a food truck or a greasy spoon at a truck stop. When the food arrived one member of our party had fries that were cold and my whole meal was cold. Yes they replaced the food with a sorry, but should have had the courtesy of crediting the bill. I also would have liked the extra I am sorry about the issue with the food as the bill was paid. I will chalk this one up to maybe the wrong staff working on a Monday but when I return to the area I would say this place will not be a choice for dinner. read more

The food was great, but the service was less than thrilling. A group of 4 women, we came in for happy hour drinks and food around 5:30pm. We had planned to stay until 7:30 or so in hopes to see the jazz. We had made our intentions clear to the server, but he ignored us for long periods of time so we each were only able to order a single drink (which was mostly ice) each. The food that came out was ok, flavor wise and was served in large portions. Most of us had to ask for a box. This request must of confused our server because he immediately brought our checks (it was only 6:25pm). Congrats to them, but we had made our plans clear to both the seating hostess and our server prior to this point. We came here for brunch at about noon on Saturday. They have great brunch drink specials, $3 mimosas and $5 bloody marys. The mimosa was pretty good, a big glass. I've been having chicken and waffles withdrawals since moving to Lansing, so when I saw them on the menu I got really excited. Have you ever had a Monte Cristo sandwich? With the sweet, crunchy delicious texture of the fried batter covering the sandwich? That's what the fried chicken was battered in, it tasted so good! I've never had fried chicken like this, it was amazing. The waffle and gravy were just okay. I wonder if you can order the fried chicken at dinner time by itself? Anyway, I enjoyed this place. This is a cute little eatery in downtown Lansing just down the street from the capitol building which makes for a nice view if you sit outside. However, be prepared to street park and have enough change for meters. The parking enforcement is no joke and they won't hesitate to ticket you. There is rarely a wait time, even for a large group and the last time I went with a group of 4 the majority of the restaurant was empty because they were going to have a staff meeting that night and were closing early. They didn't hesitate to seat us though and didn't make us feel rushed with our meal. The menu consists of pretty standard continental options including burgers, sandwiches, and pasta. I've dabbled in both entrees and appetizers and they're satisfactory but I've definitely had better. I wouldn't necessarily make this a routine stop whilst in Lansing but if the weather cooperates it's a nice place to take a break from life and have a drink on the patio. read more

Ive been to Tavern & Tap once before for a (very lowkey) Bachelorette party once before and the service was subpar at best, but I thought we might have come on a bad night, so I gave it another chance with my husband. I am so disappointed in our experience. We were practically ignored by waitstaff the whole time, never once was offered a refill, took 30 minutes to get salads and then 20 additional minutes to get a dessert for my birthday, only to have the worst cherry cobbler I have ever seen in my life come out. Looked fine at first, but turned out to be cold maraschino cherries (yes, the kind you put in drinks and on sundaes!) with cold and stale granola cereal on top, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top of what's supposed to be a warm dessert. I ordered the Grilled Salmon Salad that was supposed to be served on a bed of mixed greens. Instead of mixed greens, the salmon was served on iceberg lettuce. Do they not know the difference between mixed greens and iceberg lettuce?? The server said the salmon would be nicely blackened and prepared with a honey barbeque glaze; the salmon was not prepared that way. They grilled it, put it on the bed of iceberg lettuce, and squirted barbeque sauce on it. This was my first time here, and I was very underwhelmed to say the least. I stayed at the Radisson across the street and after a quick stop at the hotel's restaurant (and subsequent sorrow and disappointment) I ended up here for the next meal. I had salmon with roasted peppers, fingerling potatoes and a beurre blanc sauce. The dish was very flavorful and filling and the vegetables tasted fresh. The service during that visit was very poor. The restaurant wasn't particularly busy and I felt that despite the rather empty restaurant the staff was inattentive. We stayed inside the restaurant for this meal and despite the lack of guests, it was still very loud and difficult to hear the person across from me speaking. I went here for lunch the following day and sat outside. If you have the opportunity to be seated outside, I recommend it. You can kind of see the capital and it makes for great people watching. I had the pecan salmon salad which was delicious. Portion size for this was pretty over-the-top (I was only able to finish 1/3 of my food) but it tasted wonderful. I visit Tavern and Tap occasionally during the week with coworkers, but my favorite is their weekend brunch. I really like the fact that they're open Saturday and Sunday for brunch. Most places in Lansing only offer brunch on Sunday. They also have $2 mimosas and a $5 Bloody Mary bar. The mimosas aren't very strong, but worth it for the price. They have an interesting menu that changes somewhat frequently. My favorite brunch items are the loaded waffles. I'm not a huge fan of sweet breakfast foods so the ham and cheese waffle is my go to. My boyfriend tried the French toast and he really enjoyed it. Also on the dinner menu, they have this Old Bay seasoned popcorn that's really good. No side salads available and no bread basket available. The waiter was attentive, however. I was very disappointed with the meal and then the bill came. Worst service in Lansing, ok food. On several occasions this has been the crappiest restaurant I've ever been to. On one occasion the hostess gave me a terrible attitude for actually showing up there with a large party when we called ahead and they said they had room. The last time we were there we sat for thirty minutes before anyone took our order, then another thirty without food. I finally had to leave and let my friend get it to go for me. When the check came a 20% gratuity was already added. The waitress treated us horribly, and a complaint to the manager was ignored. They also charge a credit card fee. I mean there was just A TON of cheese. the steak tips were well cooked and seasoned, but they didn't bother to pull out the one that was nothing but connective tissue, and that was a bit gross. and the balsamic dressing LITERALLY looked like diarrhea, one big chunk of whatever on top and the rest was a thin, clunky brown mixture. and really, you couldn't much taste the balsamic at all. honestly, I work downtown so I'll likely go again out of convenience and coworkers, but if it wasn't so nearby id write it off. Update 10/18/2017 Never again! My coworker and I went for lunch and paid $14 for burgers that were not cooked the way we asked. She ordered a bacon cheddar burger, it took 10min to get the "cheddar" that wasn't on the delivered burger. Graduation weekend at MSU; limited menu, high prices, and my food was cold and bland. Biggest annoyance? The 3.5% credit card fee we were charged! So PETTY!. It's so common to use debit/credit cards that if you're going to do something like that, it should be mentioned at the outset, either by the hostess or waitress, or it should be printed on the menu. We had no idea until we received our check. And then they would not accept a personal check either! Turns out they had an ATM, which the waitress didn't mention and I didn't think to ask, but I'm guessing the fees would have been hefty on that anyway. It was just classless to charge that fee (especially when we're spending about $200 there). I hope the $7 was worth the ill will it created. The $3 mimosas were just small champagne glasses - overpriced for what they were. But, the Bloody Mary was very good. :) I ordered the $24 8oz steak; it was bland, and undercooked, and cold. They cooked me another one, which was about the same. The mashed potatoes were good, but not hot, and the roasted asparagus was not a good quality. I went here for a bite since we were in the downtown Lansing area and needed to kill some time. The place looked nice from the outside so we thought we would give it a try. The inside was also nice it had a nice modern decor, lots of televisions, was well lit, and looked clean. There was no wait to be seated and we were a party of six. Our server was prompt and friendly. This place had all of the indicators of being a four star place or at least a three! Unfortunately that was not the case once our food came. It had nice presentation but upon further inspection it turned out to be just jazzed up bar food. I had the chicken lettuce wraps. The lettuce was romain with the tops cut off and although crunchy I suspect that it might have been a bit passed its prime, the chicken was well... cubed (made me question what kind of chicken it was) and drowning in soy sauce with water chestnuts. Needless to say it wasn't that good. My wife had the guacamole which didn't have that fresh green color (maybe there was to much red onion or other spices in it) they tried to fancy up with pumpkin seeds which she said just did not seem to be a good taste match. Another person ordered a cheese dip and chips which they enjoyed but part way through got a bonus french fry mixed in with their chips. There was also an order of spicy shrimp which I did not try and was told that they were okay but nothing special. I really thought hard about this review because honestly I really wanted the place to be at least three stars. I mean almost all the elements were there for it to be a good place. They continuously get rid of the best dishes on the menu. They used to offer mix and match tacos but got rid of them. Why would you do that? After a browse through the menu, I noticed that much of what they offered was expensive, so I settled for the pancakes, which were reasonably priced. The pancakes were tasty and large; I did not finish them. The reason for three stars is due to the prices (-1 star) and the service (-1 star). I had a waitress and she was not decent at all, she was merely average. At one point I had asked for syrup (so I stopped eating until I received it), and she brought it 10 minutes later (after I had already asked for help from another waiter who had already brought me the syrup). Furthermore, this place charges you 2.8% more than your overall total bill if you used a credit/debit card. So if you visit this place, take cash. In my opinion, I do not think I would visit this place again nor would I recommend it (even though I have it three stars). read more

Tonight my husband and I waited over 25 minutes to be greeted by a server after seating ourselves as instructed by the prominately displayed sign at the front door. We were provided with a menu once greeted (again 25 min after arrival). After we ordered our drinks, at what was now 9:25, and received them we noticed that the menu did not have food items on it. We asked the server for the food menu at which time she informed us that the kitchen closed at 9 pm. Surprised that no signage displayed this and that we were not informed once we were greeted; we asked her how were we suppose to know this. Her reply it always closes at 10 pm....so why 9 tonight??? I told her had we known we may have not ordered beverages and elected to go somewhere else. She said well I can take your drinks back. I asked for the manager and he reiterated the kitchen closed at 9pm. I told him I had no expectation of him reopening the kitchen for us. Rather I wanted him to understand a better level of service would be provided by simply posting a sign or informing guests upon them being greeted by a server that the kitchen was closed. After this encounter our waitress completely avoided our table for the rest of our time there. I almost could get over this experience if it was not for having noticed food being brought out at 9:45 for a couple that came in at least 25 minutes after we asked about the food menu. I am completely dissatisfied with this experience and will most likely never patronize this establishment EVER again. When the manager and server had an opportunity to make it right with a simple apology or by emphasizing with how we felt, both failed miserably. While good service is not promised and perhaps not the value proposition under which this business operates; it is my expectation and I will do business with other establishments that consciously choose to get service right. read more

The buffalo wings were meh. Sauce was good, but chicken tasted like mush. Very processed, like something you'd find in the frozen aisle in a supermarket. The guacamole was very different from what I'm used to. There was A TON of cumin, which to me does not mix well with avocado. There were also a lot of tomatoes....to the point where it should be considered a tomato dish, not guac. As for my main course, I got the brisket tacos. I was really excited about it, especially for the chipotle sour cream. The tacos were just meh. There was also no chipotle sour cream, just sour cream. It didn't have any chipotle flavor to it. I like regular sour cream, but don't say it's something that it's not. I don't think I'll be coming here for food again. I will certainly come for the live band! read more
