We went out for a late Saturday night meal and really enjoyed the Tavern Law. Service was good, though he seemed like he wouldn't turn away some help. Drinks: I had a Farmer's hand and my man had a Bourbon Dialect. Both great. Dinner was delicious Olives, the Cracklines (salty but yummy!), trout for me and fried chicken for my man. For dessert the selection was absinthe soaked fruit with praline and a small amount of creme sauce. Light and delicious. We both really enjoyed our eats. The trout had good flavors, lovely spices. Went late night with a a group of 6.. Just to grab a drink we only ordered 4 drinks and a snack the snack arrived before the drinks and by the time the drinks came my friend was finished eating. After we finished our drinks and we're ready to pay they charged us 25% gratuity automatic lol I have never heard of 25% automatic gratuity for 4 drinks a smal plate .. I paid 56$ for a mint julep and a small app.. When I inquired about the 25% gratuity they said it was policy .. Should have been stated before we ordered and with only 4 people ordering and poor slow service should have never been added .. I will never go back to this establishment and will never recommend it to any of my friends visiting Seattle .. read more

I came here not knowing what to expect. I'm a cocktail enthusiast, so I'd read about it. I used to live in Seattle and just returned for a visit, and was a bit freaked out by all the alienating hipsterness on Capitol Hill. Plus, I'd read mixed reviews. This is a nice place. It was Monday, so the secret glamorous upstairs was closed. But the downstairs was woody, elegant and pleasant. My friend and I were perfectly comfortable. The waitress was friendly and brought our drinks amazingly quickly, given the complexity of ingredients. The drinks were intriguing, leaning a bit toward the bitter side of the palate, even for classic cocktails, but delicious and well-made. The bartender was very nice, and gave me a recipe for a drink I especially liked, when I asked. What I was afraid was going to turn out to be a tense ordeal of sceniness turned out to be a pleasant, comfortable and cozy evening in a place that would probably soon become a favorite. read more

We went last night on a Sunday night and it was packed! With high hopes we grabbed the last table and waited to order. And waited. And waited. They had only 1 waitress for the place who was rushing all over the place. Obviously seriously under staffed. I ordered a glass of champagne and my husband ordered a cocktail. His was good he said but my champagne I had to send back because it was flat! We had the fried chicken which was really good but overall the place didn't feel put together, it took way way too long to get any attention from the one waitress, and we felt rushed the whole time. Don't see what the hype is all about on this place at all. read more

If you are going out for drinks this place is always a blast! Be brave and go with some of the server recommendations, I got stuff with egg whites that didn't sound great, but with a little nudge got it anyway and loved it. Not a huge menu, but very well done. Also GREAT service. read more

If you like good service and good drinks, then don't even think about going to Tavern Law. I wouldn't even know about the drinks, because after being there an hour, I still hadn't received one. I was in the "exclusive" upstairs room the other night and while the ambiance was warm, the service and attitude were not. I would never recommend this place to my worst enemy. The people who work and run the place were snotty and rude. You know what they say... you can be pretty on the outside, but if you aren't pretty on the inside you're ugly... This would apply to Tavern Law. Nice decor -- horrible and nasty service with attitude. If that is your thing...then by all means go, but be prepared to wait hours (and I truly mean hours) for your drink, even if you are the only one in the place. They are just too busy and too cool to have to deal with actual paying customers. read more

This is a neat atmosphere with a fantastic drink menu and excellent (although spendy) food... but our service was TERRIBLE. Our waitress Monica was so cold and indifferent, she didn't even smile once. She offered no assistance in explaining the menu or offering suggestions. And I must say, it's a menu worth some explanation. It was simply "do you know what you want." No thank you, please, NOTHING. We spent $200 on two rounds of drinks and appetizers - for that money (or heck, even for less...) we expect much better service. I noticed they had caipirinhas on the menu and having been to brazil and drunk many a caipirinhas I was excited to have the chance to order it. I asked the waiter "how do you make your C's?" Just so you know many bars in Seattle who have cachaca don't exactly make this drink correctly . I'm looking at you Zig Zag and Cafe Presse. Well, the waiter said "we make it the only way you're supposed to make it." Sweet, I'll have one. What came was in fact the worst execution of the drink I've had in seattle being that it was made with ice so crushed it was like a boozy slushy. No way did I just pay $9 for that POS. You just lost a customer for straight up lying to me. You don't know jack about this drink and claim to do it the right way. Buncha bull. Why don' t you take a tip from the guys over at Paratii and do it freakin the right way. They tell me they've been trying to get you to make this drink the right way so listen the hell up won't you? read more

It's lost its luster. Years ago when this place opened it gave Seattle something it was sorely missing, a high-end craft cocktail bar. Since then, the city has grown and we have our fair share of those in just about every neighborhood. Tavern is now a shell in comparison to its competition. I came here with my friends to go into Needle and Thread. The moment we stepped into the door, an employee named Will Holland literally freaked out, "woah woah woah, let me see your ID's first." Then he demanded that we step outside of the entrance. First of all, there was only one male in the group, and 6 females. He accused the male of having a fake ID. He's 29 for god's sake. Was the employee jealous that the male was surrounded by girls? I'm not sure, but he was so disrespectful to all of us. He looked at the girls up and down for a good amount of time, and kept picking on the guy. When he let us into the restaurant, we were asked by another employee to let her see our ID's again. I'm not sure if this was a racial thing, we were all colored people except for the male friend. Will Holland gave off a very, very cocky vibe and his customer service was unbelievable. His ego seriously needs a check-up. This employee has given me the worst restaurant experience I've ever had. read more

The maître d' said they were "too busy" but another couple was seated less than a minute later, as we were walking away. At the time, I thought it was because we were too casually dressed... Some friends and I tried this place last week recently and had a not so great experience. While the drinks were fabulous, the service by our main waitress was not. (Later, another kind waitness stepped in to help out.) The original waitress was overly disinterested and not helpful when we asked questions about the food. In addition, she spilled a bit out of my friend's drink and did not apologize and ignored our check-splitting instructions. Also, I'm not impressed with the $10 tiny plate of potatoes. REALLY? I'm willing to spend money on gourmet food, but for that price and that wee little portion, we basically paid more than $1 per tiny potato and parsnip piece, and that is not much of an exaggeration. read more

I knew almost nothing of this place before walking in the door so I can say I had no preconceptions or expectations. I drink scotch served neat and I don't usually go for cocktails, but I decided to give the mixed scotch drink, the "Billionaire", a go. It turned out to be a great drink; the scotch was complemented by the other ingredients rather than masked by them. The biggest surprise was the natural burger. I'm really torn about this place. First, as a law student, I love the feel of the place and the Washington Reports volumes lining the wall. Speakeasy + law theme = fun. Goes along with the well-known perfect pairing of law & booze. Also, the drinks are very, very good. And what there was of food was also tasty, if small. HOWEVER, I had the worst service I have had in a very long time when my friends and I tried to go out for some drinks on friday. Part of the poor service was just being unhelpful, but some of it was downright rude. The thing I was absolutely shocked by is when our waitress brought out the drinks and spilled about a third of my friend's drink when she set it down and didn't even acknowledge it. The drink had spilled all across the table, but the waitress never apologized or even thought to bring another napkin so we could try to sop up the spill. We were all stunned. And that was a $10 drink! At a nice place, the waitress really should have offered to top off the drink. But at the very, very least she could have apologized. Nothing. The waitress continued to be thoroughly uninterested in helping us. I asked a simple question about whether two of us could share an appetizer and if there was an appetizer that would work best for that. She seemed annoyed by the question, but informed us that the potatoes would be the best. She neglected to tell us that all of the appetizers are tiny. Annoying? Yes, but not a big deal when compared to not apologizing for spilling an expensive drink. The good news is that halfway through our drinks and food, we got a new waitress who was super great and efficient (y'know, like a normal waitress would be...). Part of me thinks we got the new waitress because she realized that our old waitress didn't really want to have to actually serve us. All that said, I will very likely go again and just avoid the horrible waitress like the plague. Next time I will request that I am not served by her up front. Maybe they will realize that she is bringing the whole place down one of these days. It has also been suggested to me that sitting at the bar is the way to go. I hope to have a better experience next time, because this place has some great potential! read more

Seriously the coolest new bar to hit Seattle. Great libations and gourmet grub that will knock ur socks off! *Plus a secret bar that is hidden behind a safe door and requires you to make a call before being buzzed up... this place is AWESOME. Started at the lower bar and sampled some daily menu items: the Duck Breast with Quince was to die for, the pork belly with parship root and charred brussel sprouts was amazing, and the roasted squash spaghetti was out of this world.. if you're a foodie, you'll love it here. The drinks are different as they believe in freshly made juices. The coolest part of my visit was the secret bar experience. Once you're in, a server seats you and basically asks what kind of drinks you like -- the bartender essentially makes you a custom drink to your liking.. How COOL is that?! I ordered 2 custom drinks - one with shaved ice :) The experience overall - food, drink and just the fact that you are in a hidden speakasy, makes this a fun destination. Will definitely be back. Hoping this place still stays hidden - but I don't think for too long!! read more

Fantastic food, inventive & delicious, inexpensive...Superb gastro-pub food out of one of the smallest kitchens ever. For your first foray into sous-vide cooking you can't go wrong here and you won't drop a ton of money...The cocktails list is extensive and delicious although you can spend some serious dough on drinks--especially if you are upstairs in the Private Bar. The only missteps I have encountered on 4 meals here is occassionally the seasoning was a bit off (a little salty)...but I mentioned it to the cook Ross, and the next time the Fried Chicken was spot-on. Fun spot. I did not like dining upstairs however...trying to have to balance food for 3 Diners/Foodies that love to eat when our table was an awkward ottoman was not good for the back...We ordered tons of food-- almost one of everything off the menu and it all came at once...I would have thought the waiter would have paced it out better. And when asked for another tray to balance dishes on--the waiter brought a tray used for bussing...When asked about which of 2 unfamiliar beers the waiter would recommend-- he said he didn't know cause he doesn't drink beer! (This from one of GQ's Top 25 Bars) Really? I think the (upstairs) waiter needs to study up on his beers. Still, love this place! But in the future I will be sitting downstairs.... read more

Even though I was interested in the prospect of the mezzanine/second floor, I found it to be a bit contrived. The food was decent; although 11 bucks for mac and cheese on a small plate is kindof wack IMO. The drinks were good but nothing earth-shaking and fairly petite. I can understand why scenesters might like a place like Tavern Law, I just think that if you want to meet for a drink and some food after work, there are other places less expensive that don't tip their hat to Anthropologie for decor and imagination. read more

This place seems to have a problem remembering your order. We had to constantly go ask where our drinks were after 20-30 minutes.

Came here after dinner for some night caps with my boyfriend and the folks. First off, my dad was very happy they had a selection of ports. The atmosphere was very intimate. We decided to sit outside to enjoy the nice weather (even though it was the evening) and enjoy some good people watching. Drinks were absolutely great. They had a stellar drink menu and I thought their house drinks were inventive and delicious. The staff was very warm and friendly with a "laid back" attitude without the "laid back" work ethic. Have to admit all my friends and I were completely taken in by this place...the one of us who'd been there before didn't say anything to the rest of us and just walked up to the phone in the back, got buzzed in, and upstairs we went. Cool vibe, great drinks, definitely enjoyed ourselves and look forward to going back. Only drawback was the waitress who seemed pretty cool when we first sat down but then turned really really weird. She kind of gave us a rundown on the place when we sat down, told us to pick our spirit and then they could tailor the drinks to our liking. So my buddy told her he wanted something with whiskey in it and could the bartender whip up a special whiskey drink for him. She seemed totally perplexed by this question so he tried again, and she seemed even more confused and started to get short with him so he just ordered a Makers on ice. He even tried again the next time she came over to get our drinks, but she just didn't get it. So odd, she had basically told us to give her an idea of what we liked and then she'd surprise us, and then we my buddy did what she asked, she acted like he was speaking a different language and then just got really cold and short with him. Even when it came to the bill, she was just awkward and difficult. That said, we still had a great time there and would definitely go back...just hope the waitress figures this thing out or moves on...weirdo! read more
